REVIEW; Sun Protection

We’d like to introduce to you, Antonia!

Antonia is a blogger & shares the things that she loves and indulges in the details that make life special. We asked Antonia about her favourite products when it comes to summer, find which multitasking product from Clarins is a must have…

HOLIDAY SUN PROTECTION

I’ve arrived in Menorca for my yearly summer break with my family and this post is a very quick roundup of the sun protection I’ve been using since I got here.

allbeauty have kindly partnered with me for this trip so the items I’ve listed are my picks from their holiday selection. I focused only on sun protection because this is a very relaxed break and I rarely get dressed up or wear any makeup when I am here so looking after my skin is my main concern.

FACE PROTECTION

You may know from following me on social media or reading other blog posts that I suffer with pigmentation. The minute the sun comes out, my face gets covered in uneven brown patches. I always use skincare products and makeup with an SPF but it makes little difference but yet battle on.

An exciting recent discovery is Ultrasun’s eye cream with an SPF of 30 which is also waterproof. I cannot recommend this enough, it’s not greasy at all and your crows’ feet will thank you for it. This is my hero product of the summer

For my face I chose Clinique’s mineral sunscreen, it reminds me a lot of this other one by Clarins It’s really lightweight, you barely notice you are wearing it and it’s great for days out and about, although you might want something more heavy-duty for long days at the beach.

I mentioned earlier that I suffer with pigmentation and to that end, I am road testing an anti-dark spot fluid from Nuxe. It’s too soon to tell whether this will help but I expect it to come into its own once I am back home in the UK.

HAIR AND BODY

Clarins has come up trumps with a multitasking product to protect both your skin and unruly locks from sun damage. It’s the sun care oil mist which is a dry oil with an SPF of 30. Multitasking products are worth their weight in gold and never more so than when luggage allowances are tight. My supply is going down quickly as I’m spraying it liberally. It gives your skin a nice glow and my hair a much-needed boost of moisture throughout the day. I doubt it will last the duration of the holiday but it’s a goodie all the same.

Where hair is concerned, I’ve been keeping my coloured and heat damaged hair in check with Swimcap from Philip Kingsley. It’s said to be excellent for blondes as it stops hair from going green in chlorinated water. The product was originally developed for the US Synchronised Swimming Team so you know it must be good.

It would be great to hear about the holiday skincare products you swear by so please let me know in the comments below!

Summer Sunshine Safety

Summer’s not over just yet- there’s still time to have fun in the sun and soak up the rays.  We want to make the most of every moment in the sunshine (as it doesn’t come around very often!) and we don’t want to be hiding away; let’s be safe and not sorry. You may associate SPF (Sun Protection Factor) with sun prevention products to use whilst you’re chilling by the pool or beach, however it is an acronym that is appearing increasingly on skincare bottles and vials for everyday use.  So whether you’re planning on a summer mini break to the city, packing your bags for a long haul vacation, or simply planning to spend more time outdoors in your garden soaking up the summer sun, read on to find out more about why you should consider using SPF products in your skincare routine.

Here comes the sun…

SPF comes in different factors, ranging from 2 – 50+. According to the NHS, Sun creams and lotions should be at least SPF15, however, factors 30-50 are most effective when it comes to preventing your skin from over exposure to UVA & B rays. It is possible to experience skin damage on a cloudy or overcast day, so it is important to make sure your skin is protected when you are spending long periods of time outdoors.

Shop our best seller Estée Lauder  DayWearMulti Protection Anti Oxidant Sheer Tint Release Moisturiser SPF15 50ml for just £40.50 – saving 10% off RRP.

What is the difference between UVA and B rays?

UV B rays are responsible for causing sunburn. Whilst sunburn can be soothed with after sun products, it’s crucial to note that UVA rays can also cause irreversible skin damage in the long term as they can penetrate through several layers of the skin, causing sun spots, signs of aging and elevating the risk of skin cancer. SPF specifically relates to prevention against UV B rays

Shop our Lancaster Sun Beauty Velvet Tanning Milk for Body SPF30 400ml for just £19.95 –  saving 38% off RRP.

How can I incorporate SPF products into my skincare routine?

If you’re a city dweller, Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart Hydrating Shield SPF50 is a moisturising lotion which can be used as the last step in your skincare regimen to strengthen and protect skin. It offers tinted protection against UV rays, meaning that it can also be used in place of foundation. The Prevage range is especially designed to prevent ageing and also fights against environmental stresses, such as pollution, making it ideal for those with a commute.

Fans of French Brand Caudalie will be familiar with the brand’s exciting origins from the vineyards of Bordeaux. But did you know that their famous grape vines can be combined with SPF? Caudalie’s Anti-Wrinkle Face Suncare has SPF50 incorporated within its formula containing organic grape water and antioxidants. Formulated without traces of oxybenzone or octinoxate, this product is a great addition to skincare routines for fans of natural beauty & ocean swimming as it is free of chemicals suspected to cause damage to the marine ecosystem (coral reefs included).  Bonus – as well as being lightweight, the product is delightfully fragranced with notes of Frangipani flowers in addition to providing SPF protection. Apply generously to the face before exposure to the sun – avoiding the eye contour. Shop Caudalie’s Whole Suncare Range here.

Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protection Cream Plus SPF50 for Face & Body 50ml can be used as a base for your foundation and should be applied daily after your usual skincare routine. We love that this cream is for Face and Body – it can be applied to the neck and décolletage to protect against ageing and damage in these oft-neglected areas!  Shop now for £23.50- saving 31% off RRP.

allbeauty’s Sun Protection FABULOUS tips

Pay attention to expiry dates, replenishing products that have expired to ensure that you are maximising their effectiveness and making the most of your skincare routine.

Re-apply SPF products frequently throughout the day (before heading out on your lunch break, after swimming, half an hour before gardening) to ensure that you are always protected from over exposure! The NHS recommend that you apply SPF products half an hour before being outside for extended periods, as well as immediately before you go out.  Our Lancaster Sun Beauty Velvet Touch Face Cream SPF30 50ml + Free Gift is perfect protection at just £14.

Fan of acids and toners? When these are used in your skincare routine, your skin can be more sensitive to sunlight, which is why you should always consider using SPF skincare products to help protect against sensitivity.

The one word we don’t like: Sunburn

We don’t welcome sunburn but sometimes it arrives unexpectedly. What to do when it all goes wrong? We believe that the best way to combat sunburn is through prevention but you need to know what to do if you find your skin irritated and an unfortunate shade of lobster. If you experience burnt skin as a result of overexposure, it is important to treat this as quickly as possible – make sure you also drink water to prevent dehydration and always consult a doctor if you experience severe signs of sunburn.  Our two favourite picks:

Moisturisers and balms containing aloe vera, such as Clinique After Sun Rescue Balm with Aloe, can help to soothe and cool irritated areas of skin, 150ml for just £19. Lierac Sunissme SOS Repairing Serum,  contains witch hazel and omega 3 and 9s can help repair skin from intense exposure from the sun helping to refresh, soothe and prolong tanning results, 30ml for £21.95 saving 51% off RRP

allbeauty has a range of products which can be used to soothe sunburn or to maximise your tan. We recommend that you always apply moisturiser after exposure to the sun – but remember, when it comes to sunburn, prevention is better than a cure!

Ultrasun Sun Safety Q&A: Your Questions Answered

We checked in with the experts on those all-important questions from tanning to SPF.  Keep you and your family safe with our Ultrasun sun safety Q&A.

ultrasun sun safety11

Our Ultrasun sun safety Q&A is a must-read for anyone heading off to the great outdoors!

You can’t take risks in the sun, whether you’re ‘only at home’ or you’re looking for a deep tan, be sure to stay safe. Shop all sun and tan here at allbeauty.

How much sun cream would I need for a week’s holiday?

As a rough guide we would suggest 100ml per child per week and 150ml for an adult.

Is it possible to tan even with a high protection factor?

A good sun protection product does not affect the natural tanning capacity of the skin. Ultrasun isn’t a sunblock but a filter. Therefore your skin is still able to breathe and tan. Always start with a higher protection factor and move down when your skin has acclimatised. By protecting your skin like this your tan will last for longer.

Does the shade protect you from sunburn?

Shade given by trees and parasols only gives protection from around 70% of UV rays. Protection – applied indoors at the beginning of the day – covers all potential sun scenarios. Out of the shade, remember a simple shadow rule: the shorter your own shadow, the higher the sun and the greater the risk. Take a long lunch break in the shade and try to avoid sunbathing until after 3pm.

Do I still need sunscreen on a cloudy day?

Yes. Over 90% of UV can penetrate light cloud cover, and this remains a common mistake and reason for sunburn – both in the UK and abroad.

ultrasun sun safety11

What factor do I need?

Choosing the right factor is not necessarily about age – more skin tone and where you are or going to. To find the right factor for you, we recommend visiting the Ultrasun sun account.

What factor do I need for my children?

This depends on skin type and where you are. We would normally recommend Ultrasun Family 30 in the UK and Ultrasun Extreme 50+ abroad as a general rule of thumb.

Will sunscreen prevent me from getting Vitamin D?

Ultrasun is a filter not a sun block, so your skin still functions – i.e. tans, melanin develops, receives vitamin D, but slower. In addition, the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) states that continued sun exposure does not result in ongoing vitamin D production, so there’s no benefit in sunbathing for long periods of time purely to increase vitamin D levels.

I suffer from prickly heat what do you recommend?

Ultrasun Family 30 or Ultrasun Extreme 50+ are our most sensitive formulas that we recommend to prickly heat sufferers

ultrasun sun safety11

Can I apply other products to the skin before I apply Ultrasun?

It is really important that Ultrasun is applied FIRST to clean, dry skin before another moisturising or beauty product to allow Ultrasun to fully bind with your skin. You can put your skincare over the top and you are not wasting it. Cleanse, tone, Ultrasun!.

How do I apply Ultrasun & how often?

All Ultrasun products need to be applied to clean, dry skin at least 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun. Use plenty and really let it sink in before sun exposure. Look out for easy to miss bits (around shoulder straps and your clothing). How you apply sun cream matters: do it first thing, do it indoors and apply enough. Regardless of the brand you use, any application in direct sunlight (i.e when you’re already on the sun lounger!) increases evaporation before it’s had a chance to bond with the skin, reducing its power to protect. Because of the technologically advanced formula, Ultrasun products require just one application a day to deliver long lasting, high level protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Generally one application is sufficient but another application may be required after extensive sweating, swimming, towel drying or in extreme temperatures.

Must-Have Summer Hair Protection

So you know all about summer skincare, but what about summer hair protection?

When it comes to summer, you might be all over that SPF skincare malarkey, but what about your hair? The sun can be just as damaging to your tresses as it can be to your face. Our beauty editors reveal their must-have products for summer hair protection…

1. The shampoo & conditioner

Novex Summer Beach Shampoo & Conditioner

Straight from the beaches of Brazil, Novex Summer Beach Shampoo & Conditioner is a deep conditioning system designed to combat the drying effects of the sun, sea and sand. With vitamin E to replenish moisture and encourage healthy growth and coconut and green tea extract to help combat chlorine and salt water damage.

2. The hair mask

Davines Su Hair Mask

New in from Davines, the Italian haircare label taking the world by storm,  is the Su Hair Mask. A moisture replenishing hair mask specially designed to defy the effects of sun exposure, it contains citrus myrtifolia extract, a natural anti-inflammatory, to help soothe irritation or sunburn. Davines pride themselves on being eco-friendly, so packaging is 100% recyclable. Simply apply after shampoo and rinse after 10 minutes.

3. The leave in treatment

Kerastase K Soleil CC Creme

Suitable for all hair types, this complete care Soleil CC Cream from Kerastase protects, repairs, and illuminates hair that has been exposed to UV rays.  And, because it’s a leave-in treatment, it also helps to prevent hair colour change caused by the sun’s rays. Simply apply to damp or dry hair before sun exposure and reapply throughout the day as necessary.

4. The styling spray

Alterna Ocean Waves Bamboo Styling Spray

This paraben-free ocean waves texturizing spray from Alterna creates that coveted ‘just back from the beach’ look instantly. Infused with organic bamboo extract to strengthen hair, Tahitian coconut to moisturise  and Aterna Haircare Colour hold technology to protect colour from sun, seawater and other environmental stressors, plus a Brazillian mango and coconut milk scent to die for!

5. The SPF (yes, really!)

Ultrasun Daily UV Hair Protection

They say ignorance is bliss, but in this case it’s only going to lead to dry, sad looking hair. If you didn’t already know, you should be applying an SPF to your hair as religiously as your face during the summer – especially during heatwaves! Without it, hair is vulnerable to UV radiation, clorine and salt water. Not to mention colour fade. Try the Daily UV Hair Protector from Ultrasun which will also leave tresses supple and elastic – the pefect handbag size, spritz before you head out and top-up throughout the day.

Stay Safe In The Sun With Our Handy Checklist

A heatwave can catch you unprepared. Read our top tips to stay safe in the sun, compiled from information by the British Skin Foundation and sun safety experts Ultrasun.

Stay safe in the sun and don’t take risks. Skin can burn in as little as 10 minutes and remember – the sun is the number one cause of ageing! You can shop all sun and tan here at allbeauty.

  • The sun’s at its hottest between 11am and 3pm – avoid completely
    if you have pale skin
  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 mins before you go out
    – don’t forget back of the neck, feet and ears
  • Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours. Start with a high factor (at least SPF 30)
and reduce as the day goes on
  • Wear a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses – sunscreen is an extra layer of protection
  • UVB rays are related to skin cancer, UVA to ageing
Make sure your product has the UVA circle logo to be sure of proper protection
  • UVA circle logoThe UVA star rating only shows how much UVA protection you’ll get compared to
UVB protection in that product. So always choose a high SPF first (eg SPF 30)
then look for 4 or 5 stars for the UVA rating
  • Keep babies & toddlers completely out of the sun.
Use a sunscreen just for kids as adult sunscreen can irritate young skin
  • Drink plenty of water!
