allbeauty bake off – Guernsey Gâche

Competition Time!

Bake off! Did you know that allbeauty’s headquarters are based on the island of Guernsey? That’s right, you can find us nestled in the English Channel in between the UK and France. With high temperatures, proximity to beaches with some of the largest tidal ranges in the world, a rich heritage, gorgeous cows and a cosy community, there’s a lot of fascinating facts to discover about Guernsey.

The current COVID-19 situation means that the allbeauty Guernsey team are all currently in isolation from our usual habitat (the office), working from home and finding new ways to adapt to life indoors and away from each other. Today, inspired by the spirit of coming together over the good British tradition of enjoying cake and a cup of tea, we want to share one of our favourite local recipes that you can also try at home. Step in our allbeauty bake-off challenge, inspired by our island home!

Guernsey Gâche (pronounced Gosh, as in… Oh my gosh, we’re about to show you how to make a really amazing loaf of bread that doesn’t include bananas) is a dish that has been made in Guernsey for centuries. We mentioned earlier before that Guernsey is very close to France – this is important for explaining the naming of this regional treat, as Gâche in Guernsey-French, the original Guernsey language, actually means Cake!

Gâche is a unique type of sweet bread made with dried fruits – raisins, sultanas, cherries and mixed peel, as well as Guernsey butter. We think it’s perfect for any time of day – toasted for breakfast, with that 4pm cup of tea (we love ours from a beach kiosk!) or even as a cheeky midnight snack.

1lb plain flour

½ lb Guernsey (or Good Quality) butter

12oz sultanas, currants or combination

2oz mixed or candied orange peel

1oz yeast

1tsp sugar

1tsp salt

½ pint warm water

1) Sieve your flour and salt together in a bowl. Leave to the side in a warm place.

2) In a separate bowl, cream the yeast with the sugar, being sure to add a little water. Leave the bowl in a warm place for a few minutes.

3) Take your bowl with the flour. Make a well in the centre and begin rubbing your butter in.

4) Add in the yeast mixture and gradually mix in the rest of the water to make a soft dough.

5) Fold in the fruit mix of sultanas, currants and peel.

6) Cover and leave to prove in a warm place for one and a half to two hours.

7) Turn the mix into a 1lb loaf tin.

8) Bake for thirty minutes at 220°C, then lower to 200°C, for a further thirty minutes.

Slice your loaf! We like it best when it’s been toasted and buttered.  Or even try with Cheese!

We would love to see your bakes – whether you attempt a Guernsey Gâche, a regional speciality from your hometown or even your Nan’s famous Victoria Sponge. Share your bakes with us on our Facebook or tag us on Instagram @allbeautyhq – we will be giving away a prize for our favourite!

How To Tips From Georgia

About Georgia

I’ve been a beauty therapist for 22 years. After training in Chichester, I moved along the coast to Brighton and ran a salon there for over 10 years. I moved back to Guernsey 12 years ago and after having some time out to have a family, I started working for allbeauty. I’ve been with the company for 7 years and work as a therapist as well as managing the salon. I feel my experience with clients over the years of being a therapist has helped me to manage the salon effectively and it’s something I really enjoy doing. I specialise in threading and facial treatments in particular, Guinot Hydradermie.

Home Manicure

Our poor hands have suffered so much recently with all of the extra hand washing, so it’s so important to keep applying hand cream to stop them cracking and drying out.

A great little trick to do at home is the equivalent of a deluxe manicure that we would do in the salon.

You will need:

1) Two small hand towels

2) Cling film

3) Cuticle oil or equivalent

4) Small microwaveable pot

5) Rich hand cream

6) Hot water bottle

7) Nail varnish remover

8) Strengthening/repairing base coat

Morrocanoil Body Oil is great for this, but alternatively, if you don’t have a cuticle oil you could use olive oil, almond oil or even baby oil!

For the hand cream, my personal recommendations would be Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream, or for extra dry hands, L’Occitane Extensive Hand Balm.

1) Very carefully heat the oil in a small pot in the microwave

2) Apply a thin layer to each cuticle and the fingers and then apply the hand cream all over the front and backs of the hands

3) Wrap each hand in cling film

4) Then place the other towel over the top

5) The hot water bottle can then be placed over the top of the hands. This step really helps warm the hands and opens the pores so the products can start to work

6) Leave this on for 10 minutes

7) Carefully remove the cling film and then massage any remaining oil and hand cream into the skin

8) Remove any residue cream/oil from the nails with a nail varnish remover

There you have it – a deluxe manicure to keep you going whilst away from the salon!

Rest and Relaxation Spa Time

So now we have no excuse not to do that home body care that we are always putting off due to a lack of time! From running around between work and children’s activities, making dinners, doing the housework and having to think of great school lunch box ideas late at night, I for one will be making the most of a moment to myself!

So light some candles, run yourself a lovely deep bath and add some Dead Sea salts, Epsom salts, pink Himalayan salts or whatever you have in your bathroom. For an extra touch, you can also add to this some aromatherapy oils such as Lavender, Geranium, Rosemary or Sandalwood.

Before you get in, try some dry body brushing in upwards strokes to stimulate blood supply and to help with lymphatic drainage. Next use a body exfoliator on dry skin before getting into the bath. You get a much better exfoliation if your skin is dry, as not so much of the exfoliator dissolves. I recommend the Guinot Paris Gommage Facile body scrub or Decléor’s Green Mandarin scrub masque.  You can add a little body oil to it so you get a better sliding motion and to make sure it doesn’t scratch the skin. By now, your skin should be feeling tingly and there will be a slight erythema – that’s redness of the skin!

Time to gently get into the bath and have that well deserved soak. And breathe!!!!

If you can, stay in there for about 15/20 mins to really let the Dead Sea salts activate and help you relax.

When getting out of the bath, be very careful not to slip, as you have used oils.

Now gently pat your skin dry and apply your favourite body lotion, soufflé, body butter or oil. See some of my personal favourites below :

1. Caudalie Divine Oil2.L’Occitane Almond Oil3.Shu Uemura Camellia Universal Balm for hair and body4.Guinot body moisturiser5.Moroccanoil Body Soufflé

What is an extra luxurious touch – and so good for your skin – is to apply a thin layer of body oil first, let it absorb slightly and then apply your moisturiser over the top. Don’t forget feet, ankles, and knees as they all need to be included in this nourishing ritual.
If you don’t have a bath you can do exactly the same as above, but then get into a lovely warm shower instead!

You will come out feeling energised and your skin will feel fabulous.

If you are finding it hard to sleep at the moment, then this is a great routine to do before bed to help you relax and sleep – but definitely make sure you use calming products like Lavender or Chamomile!

An hour a day just for you

As the days get shorter and the nights longer, it will soon be time to set our clocks back an hour. A tradition dating back to 1916 in the UK, resetting the time allowed farmers to get a headstart on the day, making the most of the limited daylight hours. But it isn’t only farmers who should get to reap the benefits of that extra hour, you can too.

At allbeauty we believe in the importance of “me time”, those all too often infrequent moments when we prioritise our own mental wellbeing over the humdrum of daily life.

This Autumn, we challenge you to make the most of gaining an hour by adding self-care to your daily routine. One hour a day, just for you.

It may sound like a pipe-dream, but taking an hour a day to show yourself some love is a habit that simply takes commitment on your part. It may be going to bed an hour early to enjoy a morning lie-in, or an early start to allow you to begin the day with a face mask and pedicure. Small changes can make a big difference to the quality of your daily life.

Need inspiration? Here are some of the allbeauty team’s top suggestions for how to spend your power-hour:

It may not be the most indulgent or glamorous option on our list, but sleep tops the charts for one of the most beneficial ways to spend an extra hour. Whether it means preparing your lunch and outfit the evening before, or hitting the hay earlier, getting an additional hour of sleep will leave you feeling rested, refreshed, and ready to face the day.

Encourage the sandman with these sleep-inducing secret weapons.

Smile Makers

Ooh-er! Taking some time for self-discovery between the sheets is a fantastic way to prioritise your wellbeing. An orgasm releases oxytocin and dopamine, so you’ll not only be feeling great physically but will also reduce stress, relieve pain and boost your confidence. What better way to start the day?! Evening me-time comes with the added bonus of getting a better night’s sleep too! Win/win!

Pelvic Floor Trainer

It may not seem like the most thrilling way to indulge in self-care (especially after the previous suggestion), but taking time out of your day to do pelvic floor exercises is an investment in your future self. An estimated 3-6 million people in the UK experience urinary incontinence, minimise your risk with targeted pelvic floor training.

Candle and a Bath

The ultimate in relaxation, a steaming bath paired with a fragrant candle is an ideal way to end the day. Let the heat of the tub soothe your muscles and soften your skin, while an aromatic candle indulges your senses and promotes relaxation. Perfection!

Face Mask

We lead busy lives and our skin bears the brunt of that. Sensitivity, dehydration, sun-damage and exposure to pollution are all common factors that lead to lack lustre skin. With a range of face masks designed to target the full spectrum of dermatological complaints, treat yourself at least once a week, preferably in the company of a good book.

Foot mask / Pedicure

Feet are one of the most hardworking parts of our body but are rarely shown the care they deserve, particularly once the sandals have been packed away for the year. Show your tootsies some love with a weekly pedicure and foot mask available at allbeauty

Hair Treatments

As the clocks go back and Autumn arrives, our hair has a season of woolly hats, rain and wind to contend with. Treat your locks to regular moisturising hair masks to condition and strengthen your strands from root to tip.

Teeth Whitening

With the cooler weather, we all reach for a comforting tea or coffee a little more often. Don’t let your teeth suffer for it. With the iWhite Instant Teeth Whitening Kit, you can have a whiter, brighter smile in just 20 minutes a day. The question is, what will you do with your other 40 minutes of me-time?!

With such a wide range of ideas for prioritising your wellbeing, be sure to put the October 27th in your diary as the day your new self-care routine begins – you deserve it.
