How to Deal with Frizzy Hair

Contrary to popular belief, no hair type or texture is immune to having to deal with frizz. But don’t worry: We’ve got you covered with these helpful hair smoothing tips and tricks, plus the best hair product picks.

What Causes Frizz?

Dry hair and frizzy hair go hand and hand. When your hair is dry, moisture in the air penetrates the hair cuticle, causing the hair to swell and expand, and get frizzy and fluffy. It’s a basic law of science that moisture will always move from areas of high concentration to low concentration—which is also why muggy, humid weather can mean major frizz.

Start in the Shower

It’s not just styling products that can help you manage frizz; using the right system of shampoo and conditioner makes a huge difference. The more moisturising the better. Try Frizz Dismiss Shampoo and Frizz Dismiss Conditioner, which provides humidity protection and hair smoothing.

How You Dry Your Hair Matters

Step one: Swap your usual towel for a microfiber one or even a cotton T-shirt; both are softer and gentler on the hair, and will help keep the cuticle smooth and closed. (A closed cuticle means less moisture can get in and your hair is more likely to stay smoother looking.) Step two: Be gentle, instead of aggressively rubbing it all over your head, think of blotting or lightly squeezing out the water. The less you can rough up the cuticle during the drying process, the better. And the same applies once you reach for your blow-dryer. Avoid flipping your head upside down or working your fingers throughout your hair. Lightly comb or brush your hair downward as you blow-dry, and finish with a shot of cool air to help seal the cuticle. Go slowly and take your time, and ultimately, your result will be hair that appears less frizzy for longer.

Layer Products for the Best Results

Cocktailing the right frizz-fighting products is the best hair smoothing secret. Frizz Dismiss offers options for all kinds of textures; try the Frizz Dismiss Anti Static Oil Mist Spray if you have fine hair, the Instant Deflate Leave-In Smoothing Serum if you have medium hair, or the Rebel Tame Leave-In Smoothing Control Cream if you have coarse hair. Either way, keep them  near your shower and apply right after you get out. The drier your hair gets the harder it becomes to change the style. So, if you get dressed or put on makeup first, by the time you finally get back to your hair, it may have already started to frizz. Once your hair is dry, look for a finishing product to add extra shine. Diamond Oil Glow Dry Oil or the smoothing and heat-protecting Iron Shape Thermal Holding Spray.

Best Waterproof Makeup Products for Winter

Between the rain, hail, sleet and snow, winter can quickly turn you from a Glamazon into a drowned raccoon. If you want to look your best whatever the weather, you need to have the right tools on hand, but which waterproof products should be a must in your beauty kit?

Eyes

  • Waterproof mascara, like the High Impact Waterproof Mascara from Clinique, is an absolute beauty essential for winter, ensuring that those lashes stay where they’re meant to throughout the day. But waterproof eye makeup doesn’t stop at just mascara!
  • For those evenings when you want a bold look, why not try magnetic lashes? Unlike traditional fake lashes which rely on glue, these Eylure Baroque corner lashes simply attach to lids using a magnetic applicator which comes included. No risk of your lashes sliding down your face with these!
  • To finish off the look, the Clarins Waterproof Eye Pencil is ideal for creating a smoky eye on a winter’s night out, this is one eye liner that really stands it’s ground! And if you want to avoid wayward brows, you won’t find better than Wunderbrow 1-Step Brow Gel by Wunder2.

Face

It’s all very well having perfect eye makeup, but that’s no help if your foundation is pooling around your collar.

  • With Estee Lauder’s Double Wear range, you can be confident that whatever winter throws at you, your face can handle it. With over 20 shades of foundation and even water-proof concealers in the range, these are the winter must-haves.
  • For a touch of colour, you can’t go wrong with Dior Addict Lip Tattoo, which provides lasting coverage unlike any other – up to 10 hours in fact. And for continuing the rosy cheeked look indoors and out, award-winning Benefit Benetint is a fantastic stain that can be used on both cheeks and lips.
  • Lastly, finish your makeup with a light spray of Glamglow Glowsetter. Not only will it keep your face in place, but as it’s infused with caffeine and tea extracts it will hydrate and invigorate your skin too. Result!

Best Windproof Hair Products for Winter

There’s a time and a place for that windswept look, and as luck would have it, it is usually neither here nor now. Whether you have fine hair which falls flat at the first sign of a breeze, or curly hair which gets a little over-excited with humidity, there’s a product to help balance your hair this winter.

  • Caught out by a sudden shower? Keep Frizz Dismiss by Redken in your office drawer to tame your hair, whatever the weather. This serum can be used on dry or wet hair and instantly reduces frizz.
  • For fine, flat hair, Kerastase Bouffant Styling Mousse is a godsend, amping up the volume from roots to tips. With built in heat protection and good hold, this is a must for using in conjunction with your curling tongs or rollers.
  • Curly ladies, we got you. You’ve got naturally voluminous hair, but, like cashmere, you’ve got to protect those delicate locks from the elements. Joico Humidity Blocker Hairspray does just that, creating a light protective barrier around each strand which blocks humidity and keeps your curls looking their best.

Which of these products will you be incorporating into your winter beauty regime this year? We’d love to hear what’s working for you.

What’s The Difference?

We love a bit of jargon busting at allbeauty, so today’s blog is one we’ve been looking forward to writing for a while. The beauty industry can be a daunting place if you don’t know your CC from your BB and your serums from your tonics – but it needn’t be as confusing as it seems.

If you’ve ever found yourself staring blankly at a row of similar looking products wondering what on earth makes them different, you’re in the right place.

Cleansers

Main types: Cream, Gel, Foam, Water, Milk

A cleanser is a cleanser, right? Wrong. Sort of. While all cleansers do the same basic job, their different consistencies affect how they work on your skin.

  • While the heavier cream and gel cleansers are better suited for removing makeup and SPF from your skin, the lighter cleansers are best used for a second cleanse to remove any final traces.
  • Cleansing water or milk is also better suited for sensitive skin as they tend to be developed to be gentler on the skin. Technically, you could use cleansing milk to take off your makeup and SPF, but it’s going to have to work much harder than a cream cleanser would.
  • You certainly don’t need one of every variety of cleanser, but ideally, you’d have both a heavy and light cleanser in your bathroom cabinet to cover your bases.

Skincare

Main types: Oil, Serum, Tonic, Balm

Skincare is one of those categories which come with a diverse range of language. Along with the usual list of lotions and creams, come tonics, balms, oils and serums. What’s what when it comes to skincare?

  • Oil may seem like an odd thing to use on your skin, particularly if you’re of an oily disposition, but a good quality natural beauty oil can be your skin’s best friend. Hydrating and moisturising, oil not only absorbs easily into dry skin, but can also help to regulate oil production. Use in place of, or underneath, moisturiser for a hydration boost.
  • Serum’s are designed to target specific skin complaints. Rosacea? Dehydration? Fine-lines? There’s a serum for that. Lighter than a cream and easily absorbed into the skin, they’re best applied after cleansing and before moisturising.
  • Tonic is essentially the same as toner. Now, there are sometimes subtle differences between the two, but these are changeable between brands and formulas. A tonic or toner is used post-cleansing and pre-moisturising to minimise pores and get your skin squeaky clean. If you’re using a toner already, you don’t need to rush out and purchase a tonic.
  • Balm is the heavy-duty alternative to moisturiser for when a light cream just won’t cut it. Often formulated with dominant ingredients of oil and beeswax, balms offer a heavier layer than other skincare products. Best used overnight or as a 30-minute mask, balms nourish your skin deeply but are too heavy for daily wear except on those problematic dry patches.

Face

Main types: BB, CC, Tinted Moisturiser, Foundation

There are so many options for skin coverage that it can be hard to keep up with the terminology. To best understand how the main types of makeup differ, let’s start at full coverage and work our way backwards.

  • Foundation is a pigmented cream used to even out skin tone and provide a flawless base of colour. While foundation itself comes in different levels of coverage, for the sake of our article, we’ll say that foundation is at the top end of the spectrum.
  • CC Cream is a step down from foundation in terms of coverage. It balances skin tone and reduces redness like a foundation, but will often include other skincare benefits, such as hydration and an SPF. While all CC creams will have different pigments, in general they are less pigmented than foundation.
  • BB Cream combines skincare with light coverage. Essentially, wearing BB cream is like putting on an SPF, a serum, and a moisturiser, while getting the benefits of a more even complexion. They’re a great option for days you can’t be bothered with make-up, or for the woman who feels self-conscious in full foundation.
  • Tinted Moisturiser is considered by many to be a dying breed. Less coverage than a BB cream, and lacking in the additional skincare benefits, tinted moisturiser simply gives you hydration with a sheer cover.

Fragrance

Main types: Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum

All fragrances are created by combining concentrated oils with an alcohol and water base. The stronger the ratio of oils, the stronger the scent.

  • Parfum has the highest concentration, boasting around 30% fragrance – this makes it the most expensive fragrance option, but also the longest lasting. Parfums are fairly rare in most fragrance circles, with the majority of women preferring something easier to wear.
  • Eau de Parfum is what most people think of when they consider women’s perfume. At around 15% oil, the scent of an Eau de Parfum will last upwards of 4 hours, making it ideal for an evening out.
  • Eau de Toilette is a weaker concentration still, which makes it fantastic for day-wear, especially if you don’t mind topping it up as needed. Eau de Toilette sits lighter on the skin, making it easier to wear if you prefer subtlety over statement.

Masks

Whether homemade or store-bought, a mask is a great way to indulge in a little pampering, making them a staple product for any girls’ night in. But what makes a mask different from any other product?

  • Sheet masks are everywhere right now. They’ve been a favourite amongst beauty bloggers and product reviewers throughout 2019 and are showing no signs of stopping. A Korean phenomenon, sheet masks come in a face-shaped delivery system, pre-loaded with skin-nourishing ingredients. Self-care doesn’t get much easier than this.
  • Face masks have been kicked from the top position by sheet masks, but offer similar benefits. The product is applied manually to your face and usually either washed or peeled off after a set time. Face masks can be exfoliating, hydrating, or clarifying – there’s something for everyone.
  • Hair masks are a must for anyone with dry, damaged, coarse, curly or frizzy hair. Similar to a heavy-duty conditioner, hair masks are packed with smoothing, nourishing and hydrating properties, with additional ingredients based on specific hair type. Adding a weekly hair mask into your routine can make a huge difference to distressed locks.
  • Foot masks are a perfect addition to the at-home pedicure. Available as a scrub, lotion or sheet mask, they provide exfoliation and moisturisation to the hardest working part of your body. The sheet-style foot masks are particularly popular at the moment and come in the form of a pair of pre-loaded booties; slip them on for the ultimate in easy pampering.

Inside a Winter Scent

Our sense of smell is inextricably linked to memory. Whether it’s freshly cooked biscuits like mum used to make, that sweet smell of a baby’s head, or the combination of orange and clove at Christmas, one of the ways we reminisce is through aroma. It makes sense then, that people search for their ‘signature scent’, that cologne which becomes so synonymous with its wearer that one is reminded of them at the smallest sniff.

Whether you’re still searching out your signature fragrance or have one you wear year-round, this post is for you.

Why one signature fragrance isn’t enough.

Summer perfumes, with their fresh and citrus notes, are best worn when the days are warm as their lighter notes are projected by the heat in the air; these subtle elements are too easily muted by cold weather. Conversely, winter fragrances typically include heavier notes and larger molecules, allowing them to better project off the skin and carry beyond those thick winter scarves.

If you try to make a summer fragrance perform over winter, you’re fighting a losing battle.

How to find your winter scent.

Fragrances can be classified into one of eight families: Aromatic, Chypre, Citrus, Floral, Fougère, Leather, Oriental And Woody. Each category can be further split into multiple sub-families and with such a broad range of fragrances, there’s a scent for every season.

If you’re searching for your winter signature scent and are overwhelmed by the options, you may want to pinpoint a subfamily and start from there.  Two of our favourite options for a winter fragrance are Woody Musk and Spicy Oriental.

Woody Musks can be either floral or fruity and may have notes of sandalwood, pine, patchouli, vetiver or cedarwood.

Spicy Oriental Ambers combines spices like cinnamon and cloves with woods including sandalwood and atlas cedar.

Other notes that lend themselves fabulously to a winter perfume are ginger, nutmeg, star anise, vanilla, amber, myrrh and resin.

If all of this information is making your head spin – the allbeauty team has you covered.

Our favourite winter scents…

Shopping for a new fragrance needn’t be an arduous task. If you want a short shortlist, why not try one of these top picks.

For Women

#1 With fruity top notes of apricot and pomegranate, this may not immediately seem like a winter perfume, however, the base notes of Diesel’s Loverdose Red Kiss provide a heavy base that offsets the lighter notes perfectly. With patchouli, vanilla and sandalwood, you’re sure to love this sensuous scent.

#2 Award-winning and a firm favourite with allbeauty customers, Modern Muse Nuit by Estee Lauder combines florals with creamy woods to create a seductive fragrance that you’ll adore. Vanilla and tonka bean dominate the base notes, while chamomile and jasmine balance out the top notes.

#3 A more winter-friendly version of their classic Lady Million perfume, Lady Million Prive by Paco Rabanne is a delightful combination of woody notes, sweetened with honey, cacao, vanilla, and a touch of raspberry. Good enough to eat!

#4  A truly glamorous fragrance, Roberto Cavalli’s Nero Assoluto is a velvety scent which features orchid, vanilla and citrus juxtaposed against wood and ebony base notes.

For Men

#1 Wanted by Azzaro is an award-winning fragrance for men that combines fresh top notes of lemon and ginger with heavier middle and base notes. The scents of cardamom, vetiver and tonka bean make this a great winter scent.

#2 Another fantastic fragrance, this time from Boucheron, Quatre Absolu De Nuit Pour Homme sits within the spicy wood family and has notes of clary sage, lavender, nutmeg, black pepper, atlas cedar and vanilla.

#4 Boss brings us Boss Bottled Oud Saffron, a sensuous scent that features saffron, rose, and oud – some consider this to be unisex due it’s effortless combination of masculine depths with warm florals.

#5 Award-winning L’eau D’issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake is a classic scent that is incredibly versatile. A woody aquatic, it features top notes of juniper and bergamot with sage, vetiver, nutmeg, moss, cedar and sandalwood.

The Bounce Back

Start 2020 Right!

Christmas, a time for reflection, time spent with loved ones, and cheese… so much cheese.

If healthy eating and drinking in moderation didn’t feature high on your priority list over Christmas (solidarity), your skin is probably not looking its best.

Whether the festive period gifted you dull skin, dryness or fine lines that definitely weren’t there in November, we’ve got the solutions to help you start the year looking fresh-faced.

1. Cleanse, cleanse and cleanse some more.

Ok, three times might be overkill, but cleansing your face twice every night, aka ‘double cleansing’ is a super important part of any skincare routine. The first cleanse removes the layer of makeup, moisturiser and SPF, while the second cleanse addresses the skin itself. Without thorough cleansing, those expensive serums and moisturisers won’t be half as effective as much of it will stay above the surface of the skin.

Unsurprisingly, there are different cleansers designed for each stage of the process, with hard-working cream cleansers removing oil-based products, and gel or foam cleansers removing water-soluble dirt on the skin.

If you’re still using a single product to remove makeup and clean your skin, try one of these products for the second stage of your nightly cleanse.

2. Hydrate those skin cells!

Winter plays havoc with skin. Cold blasts from wind and rain, significant changes in temperature and dry central heating all play a part in creating a dehydrated complexion. Add too many glasses of wine or cups of tea into the mix (both are diuretics, expelling water and salt from your system), and you’re in for trouble.

The good news is, if you feel like you’ve suddenly aged overnight, it’s probably just dehydration. Make sure you have hyaluronic acid on hand to quickly replenish those skin cells to help banish fine lines and patchy skin.

3. Swap the moisturiser for a facial oil.

Another key way to combat winter dryness is by regularly feeding the skin with a facial oil. It might seem counterintuitive, but water dries out the skin, and its presence in winter cosmetics can severely impact your complexion especially if the temperature drops below zero. By using a facial oil a few times a week in place of your regular moisturiser, you’ll help to seal in moisture, plump the skin and protect it from environmental damage – all while keeping those flaky patches at bay.

With extracts of rosewood and patchouli, the Blue Orchid Treatment Oil by Clarins is sure to become a winter favourite.

4. Use an acid toner.

To buff away those dead cells and resurface your skin, there’s no better product than a chemical exfoliator. After cleansing, apply a few drops to a cotton wool pad and run it over your face to let the acid work it’s magic. Just be sure to wear an SPF under your makeup the following day as that newly exposed, baby-soft skin is more susceptible to sun damage.

We have a selection of acid toners available at allbeauty, but the one we’re in love with at the moment is The Organic Pharmacy Rose Diamond Exfoliating Cleanser.

5. Netflix and chill.

Now I don’t know about you, but to me, ‘Netflix and chill’ involves fleece pyjamas, a cosy blanket, the largest block of chocolate I can find, and a glass of vino. In these post-Christmas months we’re all trying to reduce our spending, so why not indulge in some at-home indulgence by adding a face mask to your Netflix binge sessions?

We love the Recovery Powerfoil Mask by Estee Lauder, and as it comes in a 4-pack, you could even invite a friend… if you don’t mind sharing your snacks of course.

There we are readers, everything you need to bounce back from Christmas and meet 2020 head-on. Bring it!

Conkers About Concealers

Everyday we read or hear about the ‘best’ product or the ‘new hot seller’, but sometimes it’s just best to hear it from the horse’s mouth. This Autumn, you have your say. We have pulled together our top 5 concealers that we are just conkers about….voted by you!

#1 Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector

Harriet:

This is quite simply the only make up item I would buy if I could only have one. I have quite large, open pores on my nose and feel self conscious not wearing any make up. However, I’m a busy mother and rarely have time to put much make up on. The rest of my skin is OK so I can go without foundation, which means all I have to do is pop a little of this Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector on my nose and a touch of mascara and I’m good to go – perfect for rushed mornings!!

Look smooth and flawless in an instant. Pores seem to disappear leaving a natural looking matte finish that lasts up to 8 hours. Smart technology manages excess oil when and where needed and resists sweat and humidity. Invisible Light for All Skin Types 15ml / 0.5 fl.oz. Our Price £18.90 – You save 10% off RRP

#2 Jane Iredale Active Light Under-Eye Concealer

Caroline W:

After being a YSL fan for years I finally found a cruelty-free alternative to Touché Eclat and it’s miles BETTER! Wish I’d dared to change years ago. I love Jane Iredale products now and they’re far better value for money.

A light refracting under-eye concealer designed to give sheer to medium coverage and using titanium dioxide and boron nitride to create a soft focus finish while buckwheat seed, white tea leaf, and cucumber fruit extracts sooth, protect, and reduce puffiness of the skin. Our Price £16.95 – You save 32% off RRP

#3 Clinique All About Eyes Concealer

REVIEW; Sun Protection

We’d like to introduce to you, Antonia!

Antonia is a blogger & shares the things that she loves and indulges in the details that make life special. We asked Antonia about her favourite products when it comes to summer, find which multitasking product from Clarins is a must have…

HOLIDAY SUN PROTECTION

I’ve arrived in Menorca for my yearly summer break with my family and this post is a very quick roundup of the sun protection I’ve been using since I got here.

allbeauty have kindly partnered with me for this trip so the items I’ve listed are my picks from their holiday selection. I focused only on sun protection because this is a very relaxed break and I rarely get dressed up or wear any makeup when I am here so looking after my skin is my main concern.

FACE PROTECTION

You may know from following me on social media or reading other blog posts that I suffer with pigmentation. The minute the sun comes out, my face gets covered in uneven brown patches. I always use skincare products and makeup with an SPF but it makes little difference but yet battle on.

An exciting recent discovery is Ultrasun’s eye cream with an SPF of 30 which is also waterproof. I cannot recommend this enough, it’s not greasy at all and your crows’ feet will thank you for it. This is my hero product of the summer

For my face I chose Clinique’s mineral sunscreen, it reminds me a lot of this other one by Clarins It’s really lightweight, you barely notice you are wearing it and it’s great for days out and about, although you might want something more heavy-duty for long days at the beach.

I mentioned earlier that I suffer with pigmentation and to that end, I am road testing an anti-dark spot fluid from Nuxe. It’s too soon to tell whether this will help but I expect it to come into its own once I am back home in the UK.

HAIR AND BODY

Clarins has come up trumps with a multitasking product to protect both your skin and unruly locks from sun damage. It’s the sun care oil mist which is a dry oil with an SPF of 30. Multitasking products are worth their weight in gold and never more so than when luggage allowances are tight. My supply is going down quickly as I’m spraying it liberally. It gives your skin a nice glow and my hair a much-needed boost of moisture throughout the day. I doubt it will last the duration of the holiday but it’s a goodie all the same.

Where hair is concerned, I’ve been keeping my coloured and heat damaged hair in check with Swimcap from Philip Kingsley. It’s said to be excellent for blondes as it stops hair from going green in chlorinated water. The product was originally developed for the US Synchronised Swimming Team so you know it must be good.

It would be great to hear about the holiday skincare products you swear by so please let me know in the comments below!

Explore Korean Beauty & Discover Healthy, Flawless Skin

Here at allbeauty we like to stay ahead of the beauty curve, keeping you up to date with all of the latest trends. Recently there has been a beauty phenomenon that has taken over on social media.  And this is not just a trend that will come and go, it is truly here to stay. Let us tell you what that special #Kbeauty hashtag is all about.

What is K-Beauty?

We love the concept of K-Beauty so much. It involves assessing your beauty needs and amending your traditional beauty routine possibly giving it a major, much needed shake-up to mirror the Korean way of beautifying.

The K-Beauty way addresses your individual skincare needs, this could mean up to twelve steps of beauty magic – but if your skin doesn’t need it then it could mean just one. It all depends on what you are starting with – and prevention is better than cure right? That’s the K-Beauty way. Ultimately who wants to be putting in the effort of cleansing, toning and moisturising if it is not having an awesome and impactful effect on our skin inside and out? The K-Beauty way of doing things means maximum results and a truly remarkable skincare look, making the beauty regime efforts thoroughly worth it.

So why do we love K-Beauty so much?

Our British culture has shifted from focusing on tanning to realising the harmful effects of too much sun and the K-Beauty concept is a perfect, natural progression for beauty focused folks.  K-Beauty allows you to target a different approach of health and hydration. Protection from the inside out and a reduction in pigment giving a smooth, flawless look. A world away from the savage sun.  We admire the way K-Beauty focuses on making your skin so nourished and glowing that products needed to cover it are minimal, whereas the traditional British approach has been heavy makeup usage on top of the skin. K-Beauty creates the perfect flawless canvas.
