Conkers About Concealers

Everyday we read or hear about the ‘best’ product or the ‘new hot seller’, but sometimes it’s just best to hear it from the horse’s mouth. This Autumn, you have your say. We have pulled together our top 5 concealers that we are just conkers about….voted by you!

#1 Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector

Harriet:

This is quite simply the only make up item I would buy if I could only have one. I have quite large, open pores on my nose and feel self conscious not wearing any make up. However, I’m a busy mother and rarely have time to put much make up on. The rest of my skin is OK so I can go without foundation, which means all I have to do is pop a little of this Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector on my nose and a touch of mascara and I’m good to go – perfect for rushed mornings!!

Look smooth and flawless in an instant. Pores seem to disappear leaving a natural looking matte finish that lasts up to 8 hours. Smart technology manages excess oil when and where needed and resists sweat and humidity. Invisible Light for All Skin Types 15ml / 0.5 fl.oz. Our Price £18.90 – You save 10% off RRP

#2 Jane Iredale Active Light Under-Eye Concealer

Caroline W:

After being a YSL fan for years I finally found a cruelty-free alternative to Touché Eclat and it’s miles BETTER! Wish I’d dared to change years ago. I love Jane Iredale products now and they’re far better value for money.

A light refracting under-eye concealer designed to give sheer to medium coverage and using titanium dioxide and boron nitride to create a soft focus finish while buckwheat seed, white tea leaf, and cucumber fruit extracts sooth, protect, and reduce puffiness of the skin. Our Price £16.95 – You save 32% off RRP

#3 Clinique All About Eyes Concealer

Barbara S:

All About Eyes Light Petal 03 has a thick creamy texture where a little goes a long long way. A small tube will last you at least a year even with regular use. It is highly pigmented and is the best concealer I’ve ever used.

This long-wearing oil-free Concealer helps keep eyes looking healthy and bright. Dark circles are reduced and puffiness is gone. Its moisturising formula ensures hydration throughout the day. Our Price £17.10 – You save 5% off RRP

#4 Guerlain Precious Light

Kat D:

Good coverage and light formula …I am in early fifties and would usually steer clear of shimmer or highlighters but this is perfect and ‘highlights’ the positives without accentuating the negatives !!

Erases the signs of ageing and hides imperfections. This travel-friendly brush awakens the skin’s youthful appearance and glow while erasing traces of fatigue. Contains Gold Radiance Pigments and Precious Rejuvenating Complex, to give the skin the glow of youth, day after day. Suitable for all skin types. Our Price £28.00 – You save 20%

#5 AMAZINGCOSMETICS AMAZINGCONCEALER Corrector

Andrex:

Great idea that you have green one end for redness on cheeks like me, & a peachy colour other end to brighten under eyes – I don’t know anyone with naturally bright under eyes!!!! great product & price at allbeauty.

Vitamin E, an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, helps fight the signs of ageing; Cucumber Fruit Extract depuffs, softens, and soothes; Sodium Hyaluronate plumps and hydrates the skin reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; Ceramide NP which hydrates and boosts skin repair. REVIEW; Sun Protection

We’d like to introduce to you, Antonia!

Antonia is a blogger & shares the things that she loves and indulges in the details that make life special. We asked Antonia about her favourite products when it comes to summer, find which multitasking product from Clarins is a must have…

HOLIDAY SUN PROTECTION

I’ve arrived in Menorca for my yearly summer break with my family and this post is a very quick roundup of the sun protection I’ve been using since I got here.

allbeauty have kindly partnered with me for this trip so the items I’ve listed are my picks from their holiday selection. I focused only on sun protection because this is a very relaxed break and I rarely get dressed up or wear any makeup when I am here so looking after my skin is my main concern.

FACE PROTECTION

You may know from following me on social media or reading other blog posts that I suffer with pigmentation. The minute the sun comes out, my face gets covered in uneven brown patches. I always use skincare products and makeup with an SPF but it makes little difference but yet battle on.

An exciting recent discovery is Ultrasun’s eye cream with an SPF of 30 which is also waterproof. I cannot recommend this enough, it’s not greasy at all and your crows’ feet will thank you for it. This is my hero product of the summer

For my face I chose Clinique’s mineral sunscreen, it reminds me a lot of this other one by Clarins It’s really lightweight, you barely notice you are wearing it and it’s great for days out and about, although you might want something more heavy-duty for long days at the beach.

I mentioned earlier that I suffer with pigmentation and to that end, I am road testing an anti-dark spot fluid from Nuxe. It’s too soon to tell whether this will help but I expect it to come into its own once I am back home in the UK.

HAIR AND BODY

Clarins has come up trumps with a multitasking product to protect both your skin and unruly locks from sun damage. It’s the sun care oil mist which is a dry oil with an SPF of 30. Multitasking products are worth their weight in gold and never more so than when luggage allowances are tight. My supply is going down quickly as I’m spraying it liberally. It gives your skin a nice glow and my hair a much-needed boost of moisture throughout the day. I doubt it will last the duration of the holiday but it’s a goodie all the same.

Where hair is concerned, I’ve been keeping my coloured and heat damaged hair in check with Swimcap from Philip Kingsley. It’s said to be excellent for blondes as it stops hair from going green in chlorinated water. The product was originally developed for the US Synchronised Swimming Team so you know it must be good.

It would be great to hear about the holiday skincare products you swear by so please let me know in the comments below!

Antonia x

All words and opinions are my own, thanks to allbeauty who gifted the products to me.

A massive thank you to Antonia for this great review, all products can be purchased here.

Explore Korean Beauty & Discover Healthy, Flawless Skin

Here at allbeauty we like to stay ahead of the beauty curve, keeping you up to date with all of the latest trends. Recently there has been a beauty phenomenon that has taken over on social media.  And this is not just a trend that will come and go, it is truly here to stay. Let us tell you what that special #Kbeauty hashtag is all about.

What is K-Beauty?

We love the concept of K-Beauty so much. It involves assessing your beauty needs and amending your traditional beauty routine possibly giving it a major, much needed shake-up to mirror the Korean way of beautifying.

The K-Beauty way addresses your individual skincare needs, this could mean up to twelve steps of beauty magic – but if your skin doesn’t need it then it could mean just one. It all depends on what you are starting with – and prevention is better than cure right? That’s the K-Beauty way. Ultimately who wants to be putting in the effort of cleansing, toning and moisturising if it is not having an awesome and impactful effect on our skin inside and out? The K-Beauty way of doing things means maximum results and a truly remarkable skincare look, making the beauty regime efforts thoroughly worth it.

So why do we love K-Beauty so much?

Our British culture has shifted from focusing on tanning to realising the harmful effects of too much sun and the K-Beauty concept is a perfect, natural progression for beauty focused folks.  K-Beauty allows you to target a different approach of health and hydration. Protection from the inside out and a reduction in pigment giving a smooth, flawless look. A world away from the savage sun.  We admire the way K-Beauty focuses on making your skin so nourished and glowing that products needed to cover it are minimal, whereas the traditional British approach has been heavy makeup usage on top of the skin. K-Beauty creates the perfect flawless canvas.

Our Favourites

We have curated a collection of finds from the trend setting country itself, and with our amazing K-Beauty products, you get the chance to experience this new way of skincare life for yourself.  We have grown this range overtime to offer you our favorite products in the K-Beauty category.

Seoulista products are formulated with powerful botanicals and free from harmful parabens, oils, sulphates and artificial colours – basically all harmful chemicals are a no!  Stringently hygiene tested, never tested on animals and reputably manufactured – aren’t you loving the sound of these so far? Lancôme Idôle, for women of a new era

The brand-new fragrance from Lancôme may come in one of the slimmest fragrance bottles in the world (just 15mm thick), but its message is far bigger. Empowering women to look to themselves for the inspiration they need and to defy expectations. The brand dedicates the fragrance to;

“Women who dare to dream.

The leaders and innovators of tomorrow…a new generation of icons”.

Meanwhile, the brand itself has taken an inspired leap in its diversification away from tradition with the creation of a new, ‘clean’ accord – a register that has only been minimally explored to date.

To create a note consistent with the rose flower in its natural state, two essences, rose absolute and rose water, come together to form the heart of the new formula. Perhaps not unsurprisingly, as the rose has been central to the brand ever since it was chosen as its emblem.  The fragrance is then lightly enhanced with a touch of jasmine whilst a trace of patchouli and an assembly of white musks form a white chypre base that brings Idôle its full elegance.

Whilst most Chypre fragrances tend to be warm and dry, almost all are built around a woody, mossy accord of bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum (from the rock rose plant). Elements of flowers, fruits or woodiness are sometimes exaggerated in chypre fragrances, keeping this category interesting – Idôle’s new ‘cleaner’ scent is certainly no exception.

 Node breakdown:

  • Top: Bergamot essence
  • Heart: Rose essence, rose absolute and rose water, jasmine infusion and jasmine absolute
  • Base: Patchouli heart essence, cedar essence, vanilla extract

 Then there’s the bottle.

The glass surfaces of the bottles are so thin that the fragrance appears to be holding itself in the palm of your hand. Lancôme state;

Powerful in its simplicity, Idôle’s faceted bottle radiates light. So sleek is its design that it appears to almost fuse with the hand. A reminder that endless possibilities are within reach.”

The Rose of Idôle

Lancôme claims both the transparency and traceability of the ingredients within its formulas.

As part of L’Oréal’s socially productive purchasing program, “Solidarity Sourcing”, Lancôme benefits from exclusive raw materials, custom-crafted for its fragrances through sustainable supply chains or those currently awaiting certification by an independent organization. One of these, the Rose, essential to the fragrance signature of Idôle, is also the subject of a development project supported by Lancôme of which the objective is to improve the positive impact of the supply chain on a social, economic and environmental scale.

We refuse to compromise between the fragrance quality of our creations and the protection of the natural resources and people who produce them.”

Rose Petal of Isparta, Turkey

Cultivated in Turkey, this essence, exclusively made for Lancôme, is obtained from hand-harvested roses and enriched with concentrated rose water. It intensifies the refreshing, verdant facets of the flower, contributing to the sparkling natural expression of Idôle. Lancôme supports this family-based industry by helping to improve agricultural practices and work conditions and by assisting in the obtainment of a “fair trade” certification. The project also helps the women working in its production to be recognized for their contributions.

Super infusion of Jasmin Grandiflorum from India

Made for Lancôme using flowers harvested by hand in the Indian province of Tamil Nadu, this infusion is produced thanks to the exclusive development of an extraction process that makes it possible to attain the best the flower has to offer. Revealing fruity petal facets with an underlying clean, intense creamy softness, it reveals the flower in a bright, modern way.

Mienai Oshare; The Unseen Japanese Beauty

You have probably heard of the popular beauty craze K-Beauty from Korea, but did you know there is a different Asian derived beauty trend which was founded before Korean Beauty? So, what is it? J-Beauty.

J-Beauty incorporates beauty, skincare, and regimes in Japan. KBeauty tends to feature a lot more colours in their makeup palettes and quirkiness within their skincare regimen such as bubble masks, whereas J-Beauty likes to keep things a little simpler. You may think that J-Beauty would incorporate the same type of products as K-Beauty, however, Japan has a long history of traditions when it comes to skincare and cosmetics. Below the mystery of Japanese beauty secrets are unravelled:

Timeless Traditions

Japanese minimalist and timeless traditions have been rooted in their culture from as early as 700 AD. When you think of traditional Japanese beauty, what comes to mind? Possibly a Geisha? Women cover their face with a white powder called Oshiroi as a symbol of beauty. Fast-forward to the 1600s and beauty cosmetics in Japan were primarily focused on three colours: white, black and red. White powder was used to lighten the face whilst red lips were painted on top in a smaller shape than the natural lip. Red lipstick was also used to accent the outer corners of their eyes with red. Some Japanese women would colour their teeth black as it was a traditional expression of beauty and grandeur.

Western Influences

Skip forward to the late 1800s and Western influences were growing ever-stronger in Asia after Japan opened their borders to Dutch merchants. Japanese women started to use a broader range of palettes and colours for their make-up as opposed to the traditional three colours. The 20th century provided face powders and lipsticks in a wider range of shades. Extensive variations of skincare products appeared within the cosmetics industry. After World War II and Japan’s surrender to the United States, Japan’s beauty regimes became heavily influenced by Western media – especially American films, celebrities and print magazines.

Innovation Of Cleansing

So, what is the main focus when it comes to J-Beauty skincare?

Primarily, J-Beauty is all about simplicity, freshness, velvet-like skin and enhancing natural beauty. Did you know that Japanese women introduced us to the concept of double-cleansing? Protecting the skin from the sun is important within the J-Beauty trend, so expect a lot of products to contain SPF. Having clean, moisturised skin is important so products such as serums, facemasks, cleansers and oils are popular, with lighter textures such as milks, gels and emulsions being favoured over thicker creams. Japanese Beauty prioritises taking care of the skin with respect and creating products with the intention of making the skin look and feel its absolute best by offering long-term benefits as a result of preventative care. Why don’t you give Sensai’s 2 Step Cleanse & Purify range a go? Let the results do the talking:

SENSAI Silky Purifying Step 1 Remove & Reveal Cleansing Gel with Scrub. Our Price £34.95 – save £6.05 (15%) off RRP

SENSAI Silky Purifying Step 2 Cleanse & Purify Mud Soap (Wash & Mask). Our Price £34.95- save £6.05 (15%) off RRP

Genuine Ingredients

How does a J-Beauty skincare regime differ? Japanese beauty products tend to avoid ingredients with a high percentage of alcohol or the use of harsh chemicals which can irritate the skin. J-Beauty makes use of natural ingredients which derives from the Japanese tradition of using fruits/vegetables, leaves and other organic ingredients in their skincare products. A few examples of popular ingredients used include collagen, pearls, seaweed and green tea extracts. These all-natural ingredients have provided Japanese women with a number of benefits for the skin for centuries, such as softer skin with more elasticity.

Creating Circles

Here’s another Japanese beauty secret for you – as well as being mindful about what is being put on the skin, J Beauty also considers the method of application. Japanese tradition considers the beauty regime as a sign of self-love with the philosophy that skincare should be like a marathon rather than a sprint. Being delicate and applying lotions in a circular motion instead of rubbing are examples of this.  Have you tried SENSAI Silky Purifying Sponge

benefit badgal bang reviewIt’s the newest release from Benefit and BIG BIG news in the world of mascara. Hot on the heels of the legendary ‘They’re Real‘ mascara, comes BADgal BANG!, the next generation of BADgal mascara. Promising 36 hour, BIGGER, BADDER full-blast volume, this is a launch with SERIOUS impact!

We gave allbeauty Editor Claire the task of trying new BADgal BANG! and giving us her verdict…

Benefit BADgal BANG! Review – Before & After

benefit badgal bang review

A volumising mascara that lasts 36 hours, doesn’t smudge and you can layer? Music to my ears!! I’ve tried a lot of mascaras over the years but only a handful made it to my beauty bag. So boy was I thrilled to be trying new Benefit BADgal BANG! mascara… In addition to the volume claims, Benefit told me the mascara is water-resistant (meaning no smudging or flaking) and since panda eyes are my bete-noire, that went down as a major tick. It also contains ProVitamin B5 known to fuel thickness and strength – are there any downsides to this product?! – and has a streamlined brush with a 360 degree reach, which covers root-to-tip, corner-to-corner, upper and lower lashes. Best of all (I LOVE this fact!) it contains something called Aero-particles – they’re one of the lightest known materials and derived from actual space technology (seriously, they’re used in astronaut spacesuits!!)

So on to the testing. The packaging has that wonderful matt-rubber feel, with a chunky lid that clicks tight shut. I could tell immediately I opened it this was going to be good – the product comes out on the wand with absolutely no clumping. There’s no wiping off excess on the lid or plunging the wand up and down, there’s enough on the wand and that’s it. Brilliant. I slicked it onto my lashes and YES it was instant volume as you can see from my before and after pics.

The full effect on both eyes (2 coats of BADgal BANG!)

The wand does exactly what it promises, it’s super-easy to reach all lashes, upper and lower. Now I LOVE LOVE to layer my mascara and the number one complaint I have is that many brands can’t do this. They clump and flake and you have to give up. Not so BADgal BANG! – give it 30 seconds or so and then apply a second coat and it goes on perfectly. Give it another 30 seconds and you’re good to go again. I’ve left it at two coats, but I’m willing to bet you could keep going with this product.

My Verdict: 9/10, it’s staying in my bag for good (I knocked off one star because surely nothing’s perfect…)

Don’t just take my word for it, here’s what others thought on trying new BADgal BANG!

  • 90% saw dramatic volume
  • 94% said it instantly lifted lashes
  • 92% said it lengthened lashes

Van Cleef & Arpels Tsar Review – Fragrance For Men

Our Van Cleef & Arpels Tsar review looks at this timeless fragrance for men. Who made it, who wears it and what does it smell like??

Van Cleef & Arpels Tsar Review

Confession time: this fragrance has totally slipped under my radar – big thanks to Peter, our Head of Design, for pointing it out to me. Also apologies to Tsar fans out there, collectively tutting… The Tsar fragrance was launched in 1989, so it’s my guess that back in the 90s it was thought a bit too 80s, however at 18 years old I say that makes it a classic.

Created in 1989, Tsar heralds a strong and definitely unmistakable identity.
– Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef & Arpels are a very high-end French jewelery company, in existence since the late 1800s. Designing pieces for royalty to the rich and famous (and combining both when they created Princess Grace of Monaco’s wedding set), they’re to be found in luxury boutiques around the world.

Inside the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique at 20 Place Vendôme, Paris.

Created by the nose of Philippe Bousseton (who has previously worked with Davidoff), the official notes of Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels are:

  • Top Notes: Artemisia, Coriander, Lavender, Green Notes, Neroli, Bergamot, Rosemary, Cinnamon
  • Middle Notes: Carnation, Juniper Berries, Tarragon, Orris Root, Jasmine, Caraway, Lily-of-the-valley, Rose, Geranium, Pine Tree
  • Base Notes: Leather, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Amber, Patchouli, Musk, Coconut, Oakmoss, Cedar, Vetiver

In fragrance family terms, Tsar is a Woody Aromatic scent. The packaging? Modelled on the Art Deco period of the Twenties, it’s a weighty emerald green glass, with gold lettering. Think quiet, solid and stylish. Fans of history and architecture will totally appreciate these lines.

Van Cleef & Arpels Tsar Review

But what does it smell like? Two words spring to mind: ‘familiar’ and ‘pine’. Tsar is one of those fragrances you spray and say “oh it smells just like…..” but you can’t quite place it. For me, there are throwbacks to Paco Rabanne Pour Homme of the 90s (in a good way). Fresh, clean, forest scented, with an oaky-mossy base. For a fragrance that isn’t citrus, it’s incredibly clean. Like you’ve soaked in the bath and it’s clean sheet night. In the interests of research, we sprayed it onto Peter to get his opinion and note the dry down. On first spray there was that strong, fresh, pine scent again. However fast forward around an hour and Tsar had changed into an oaky-woody scent (though still remaining fresh). In the interests of honesty, Peter tells us he wasn’t sure about this fragrance when we first spritzed him. It was possibly a little too old and (in his words) “soapy”. But after the dry down, his opinion had done a 180 and Peter is now a fan, hurrah (or should we say huzzah…)

Who should wear this fragrance? Men who like to smell fresh and clean. Older men and those who like more traditional scents. We’re not afraid to use the words ‘retro’ and ‘old school’ here. This is a daytime scent we think, suited for straight after the shower.

If you like this then you’ll also like: Mr Burberry by Burberry

So did I like it? Yes. Would I gift it? Yes, but more likely to someone who preferred their classic old-school fragrances, or who likes to smell clean and fresh without announcing they’re wearing a particular branded scent. To put it simply, if he still hankers after Old Spice and Brut, then Tsar is the sophisticated upgrade!

More importantly, would Peter buy it? Yes, and in fact he did!

Fragrance: Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Review

The 2005 Fragrance by Viktor & Rolf is a bestseller year on year. Our Flowerbomb review discovers just what makes this eau de parfum so good!

Claire reviews Flowerbomb eau de parfum.

Flowerbomb is one of those fragrances I kept spotting but hadn’t ever tried (I know, pretty shocking when you consider my day job!) Fragrances have a habit of getting into my head and whispering “try me, try me” and Flowerbomb finally did that when I spotted it yet again on our bestseller list – time to get my hands on a sample…

THE MAGICAL POWER OF FLOWERS

Flowerbomb is an explosive floral bouquet. Unexpected. Thousand flowers gives rise to an ultra-feminine, delicious and sensual fragrance.
A bouquet of tens of cattleyas, hundreds of sambac jasmine, thousands of freesia, and millions of rose petals enriched by an addictive scent of patchouli and vanilla. This now iconic fragrance was created by the perfumers Olivier Polge, Carlos Benaim and Domitille Berthier

(quote from Viktor & Rolf.com)

According to Viktor & Rolf here are the fragrance notes:

  • Top notes: Tea, Osmanthus, Bergamot
  • Middle notes: Sambac Jasmine, African Orange Flower, Cattleya Orchid, Freesia, Rose
  • Base notes: Patchouli, Vanilla

All good so far, but Flowerbomb is classed as an Oriental, Gourmand fragrance – since I tend to prefer scents that are fruity and light (La Petite Robe Noire, Stormflower) I wasn’t over-confident I’d like it. But nose down I headed in…

I’m not sure what I was expecting to be honest. Surely the clue’s in the title (it’s going to be horribly floral!) but the overwhelming sugary sweetness was a huge surprise. Yes the floral notes are there but wow it’s so sweet and sugary!! I’m a fan of Prada Candy and although they’re not the same, there’s a definite hint of Candy’s caramel and vanilla notes.

Orchid, rose and vanilla are the strongest notes for me, but that lovely sugar kick is the most noticeable part of the scent. Flowerbomb is a very lovely perfume and not at all the flowery-maiden-aunt-fragrance I was guessing. It’s not overwhelming either. It is strong on the first spray but has a soft, powdery dry-down (on my skin) which I really loved. It’s also a rather grown-up scent; if you waft past someone wearing this you’ll think it a) cost quite a lot and b) they mean business.

Flowerbomb is a statement perfume, the one I’d wear if I had an interview or important meeting. But it’s also a lovely, soft, feminine scent that I’d wear for lunch with friends. Let’s face it, it’s a multi-tasker and that’s always a winner for me! I wouldn’t shy away from gifting Flowerbomb either though I’d stick to the over 25s.
