Menstrual Cup Myths – Debunked, with Organicup

Menstrual cups, we’ve all heard of them, right? But how often do we think about the choice out there? Feminine hygiene and sanitary products are still somewhat a ‘taboo’ subject for a lot of us, but they shouldn’t have to be. There’s been little change in the way sanitary products are produced and discreetly marketed to us since the 50’s!

Time moves on and things need to change, double award-winning Organicup is here to make that change. Founded in Denmark in 2012, we interviewed Organicup in an effort to debunk all the questions you may have about menstrual cups and why they are the smart choice for the future of sanitary care.

Since founding in 2012, it has always been about more than cups.

“We believe no one should be held back by their body. We believe period products should not contain harmful chemicals nor absorb natural bodily secretions, resulting in infections. Periods should not be the cause of major pollution. And they should never, ever be a source of shame.”

Question Time

What exactly is a menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup is a Feminine Hygiene device, its purpose is to collect menstrual fluid and prevent it leaking onto clothes. Organicup is made from 100% soft, medical-grade silicone from the USA. Organicup is registered with the Vegan Society, meaning it’s cruelty free and also the only cup brand in the world AllergyCertified.

Will it leak?

If correctly inserted, the Organicup will not leak. Scroll down for directions on correct insertion. OrganiCup works really well for women with heavy periods or menorrhagia, since it can contain 3 times more than a XL tampon.

In the beginning while you’re getting to know your cup and flow, we recommend you empty the cup more frequently to see how quickly it fills up. If you have a heavier flow, you might have to empty your cup more often than twice a day.

Are they difficult to use?

If the menstrual cup is completely new to you it will take time to get used to the process. Organicup has an excellent video with a step by step instruction guide to help you get familiar with how to use your Organicup.

Does one size fit all?

Organicup recognises that we are all unique, so ‘one size fits all’ is not an option. Which is why they offer 3 sizes with a fitting guide for each.

  • Size Mini: For teens or those who need a smaller size
  • Size A: For those who have not given birth vaginally
  • Size B: For those who have given birth vaginally

The difference between size A and B is very small (size A is 0.4 cm smaller than size B) but still it is very important to use the proper size to prevent leakage.

Are they expensive?

Nope, the Organicup is available from £21, which may be slightly more than you pay for your monthly supply of feminine hygiene products, however, the menstrual cup lasts for years not just a few hours, unlike disposable tampons and pads. That amounts to a vast saving over time.

Is it hygienic?

Absolutely, you first sterilize your menstrual cup in boiling water, instructions are detailed in the video guide. Once inserted correctly you create an internal vacuum, this stops any menstrual blood coming into contact with the air, which means no odors, it’s ultra hygienic and anti-bacterial.

To compare, around 1/4 of fluids collected by tampons are natural and necessary secretions, Organicup only collects, thus eliminating irritation and dryness while ensuring the natural pH balance is kept intact.

Will it get lost or stuck?

First of all, the cup can’t disappear inside you, but it can move up slightly.

The menstrual cup can’t get lost in the vagina; it will ultimately slip down by force of gravity.

If you have problems reaching the cup, the first thing to do is relax and breathe. If the menstrual cup has worked its way higher inside the vagina, it’s important to relax the muscles as tensing up will only make removing it more difficult.

Try squatting or putting one leg up on the toilet so you have better reach. Pull down gently on the stem until you can reach the bottom of the cup and grasp it with your fingers and pinch it to release the suction, and gently ease it out.

Can you pee whilst using a menstrual cup?

Yes you can!

The menstrual cup doesn’t collect your urine. The cup is inserted into the vagina and your urine comes from the urethra so the two do not interfere and you don’t have to remove the cup when you pee.

Unlike tampons, which have a string that can end up soaking up unwanted fluids, you can go to the bathroom without a worry.

How long do they last?

The menstrual cup is reusable for years. After a while of usage, the cup might get slightly stained or discolored – and that’s completely fine. Even if you replace your cup every third year, you’ll be spending way less money than you would on disposable period products and you’ll save the environment for a great deal of waste!

Why Switch from my current product?

There are so many reasons to switch, be it cost effectiveness, environmental friendly consciousness or for personal comfort and hygiene.

You will be doing the environment a massive favour, did you know that 4.6 million disposable period products are flushed down the toilet every day in the UK alone! It can also take up to 500 years for tampons and pads to degrade.

Tampons, pads and panty liners along with their packaging and individual wrapping generate more than 200,000 tonnes of waste per year, and typically all contain plastic. This waste mostly ends up in landfills, sewages, on our beaches and in our oceans.

While the actual products contribute largely to the environmental issue, their life-cycle is just as damaging – from the raw material extraction, which typically involves the production of cotton and the use of pesticides and insecticides, to the fact that most pads contain polyethylene plastic (the adhesive that’s used to make the pad stick to your underwear) and most tampons also contain chemicals such as dioxin, chlorine and rayon. While the products sit in landfills, these chemicals get soaked up by the earth and are released as pollution into the groundwater and air.

Organicup is 100% Medical grade Silicone, which is derived from quartz, a type of sand, which is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust and not hazardous to the environment. Additionally, the OrganiCup is not colored, avoiding any additives.

In terms of savings, as an example, a 26 year old woman who uses pads could save roughly £1,037 and 51lbs of waste from switching now up until menopause. If using tampons you could save roughly £686 but an enormous 95lbs of waste if they switch now up to menopause.

Top Tips for beginners

Tip 1: Wear a panty liner

Until you feel 100% comfortable with your menstrual cup, you might want to wear a panty liner so you don’t have to worry about leaking.

Tip 2: Try to locate your cervix

We all have differently positioned cervixes and the cup should be placed below the cervix, if not, it will most likely leak. Try to locate your cervix with your finger, you should feel for a slightly firmer area of tissue and position your cup under it.

Tip 3: Trim the stem of the cup

If you can feel the stem and find it uncomfortable after a couple of tries, you can cut it shorter. However, do not trim the stem while the menstrual cup is inserted!

Tip 4: Practice before your period

No one expects you to be an instant menstrual cup pro, so we recommend you practice inserting and removing your cup before you get your period.

 Tip 5: Use lubrication

You can use water or a water-based lubricant to make insertion easier.

Ask allbeauty: Top Tips for Restful Sleep

Sleep. We all need it, but most of us aren’t getting enough of it. Whether you’re partial to a late-night Netflix binge, struggle to switch off from social media, or live with tiny people who don’t understand the concept of sleeping through the night, getting a full night of restful sleep can be the stuff of daydreams.

With that in mind, the allbeauty team is here to tackle some of your sleep complaints and help you to sleep deeper, longer, and more peacefully.

“My husband feels refreshed after six hours of sleep, but I still feel drained after eight! How much sleep do I really need?”

The amount of sleep each of us needs can vary, depending on a number of circumstances. Our age, health and how active we are during the day all play a part in our sleep habits. Not to mention, we’re all unique and so are our individual sleep needs. All that being said though, the average healthy adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Head to bed an hour earlier for a solid week and see if it makes a difference to your energy levels.

“No matter what time I go to bed, I struggle to switch my brain off and end up tossing and turning. What can I do to help tune it out?”

This is one of the biggest issues facing our readers. You do all the right things, go to bed early, but end up fretting over every little thing your brain throws at you. For busy minds, a two-pronged approach is best. Aroma plays a powerful role in relaxation, so invest in a scented candle, oil or pillow spray to get to work on your subconscious. Our favourites are the Neom Scent to Sleep Diffuser and the thisworks Sleep Plus Pillow Spray. Trying some mindfulness exercises can also be incredibly helpful, so it’s well worth having one or two in your arsenal.

Neom Organics London
Scent To Sleep Tranquillity Reed Diffuser 100ml

Our Price: £38.00

“I know certain scents can encourage sleep, but I don’t enjoy the smell of lavender. Do you have any other suggestions for scents I could try?

There are a handful of scents that are particularly conducive to sleep and yes, lavender is the most widely used. As a hardy plant that grows well in many climates, it’s a popular addition to sleep products. However, there are still a few great options if you’re avoiding lavender. Chamomile is a popular choice, but also vanilla, geranium and jasmine.

The Organic Pharmacy Cleanse
Rose & Chamomile Cleansing Milk 100m

Our Price: £35.00

“My kids have trouble settling down to sleep and wake multiple times before midnight. How can I encourage them to sleep so I can get to bed earlier?”

Why is it that we spend the first decade of our lives fighting sleep, and the rest of our lives trying to get more of it? Routine can play a big part in helping kids to settle to sleep, so try to create a relaxing nightly routine for them. Scent aids relaxation, so a warm bath with lavender and a calming bedtime story can help signal that its sleep time. If that doesn’t do it, the Baby Sleep Pillow Spray by thisworks is sure to send them off to dreamland. With soothing chamomile, lavender and vetiver, it’s suitable from 6 months. For younger babies, a gentle massage with Cowshed Baby Rich Massage Oil will have the same effect.

“I love to catch up on my favourite shows in bed, but I’ve heard it can impact my sleep. Any ideas?”

You’ve heard right, the blue light emitted from your tv, tablet or phone can trick your brain into thinking it’s daytime, which makes it more difficult to drift off to sleep. In fact, it’s recommended to avoid screens for at least an hour before bed. Instead, why not listen to a podcast? Equally entertaining when you feel like you’re not yet ready to surrender to sleep, a good podcast can satisfy your tv cravings without any negative after-effects. For a particularly sleepy podcast, we love Sleep With Me.

“I struggle to wind down after a day at work. How can I create an evening that’s more conducive to sleep?”

Along with the other tips we’ve discussed, such as avoiding screens an hour before bed, you may want to consider taking a long bath on the nights you most struggle to unwind. The heat of a bath can relax your muscles, reduce stress and give your brain a chance to process the day. Make the most of your soak by using sleep-supporting scented bath oil, such as Elemis Sleep Bath and Shower Elixir or Weleda Lavender Relaxing Bath Milk.

Busting Feet Myths for National Feet Week

Read our blog & enter the competition below, good luck!

It’s National Feet Week, the time of year we cast a guilty glance downward and wonder how long it’s been since our tootsies last got given any TLC. It’s ironic really, that Feet Week falls during the depths of winter when our feet have been wilfully neglected for months. Well, it’s time to turn that around. Here are some myths (and truths) about feet, along with some of our favourite feet-friendly products.

It’s bad for you to walk barefoot – MYTH

While many of us squirm at the thought of walking around barefoot, it’s actually very good for your feet. Walking barefoot on natural surfaces strengthens muscles, helping both balance and coordination. While we don’t suggest you forego shoes altogether, taking an occasional stroll in your garden sans footwear can make a difference to your posture and muscle strength. After getting back to nature and letting your feet get dirty, give them a soak and treat them to a pedicure. It doesn’t get much easier than the Seoulista Rosy Toes Instant Pedicure!

Feet are best left alone – MYTH

While our feet are pretty self-sufficient, taking care of them should be a priority. After all, our feet ground our bodies; if they are in any way impacted, so too are our hips, back and overall posture.

As well as seeing a podiatrist at the first sign of foot discomfort, basic care should include taking care of your toenails and moisturising the hardest wearing areas around the heel and ball of the foot. While it can be tempting to forget your feet altogether over Winter, pulling on socks and hoping for the best-come Spring, this is the time of year your feet need you the most. Regular moisturising with a cream designed to penetrate the thicker layers of skin will ensure you don’t have to battle with cracked heels down the line. We love this Intense Foot Balm by L’Occitane for this exact reason.

Your feet don’t change size in adulthood – MYTH

Your shoe size is the one thing that stays consistent through the ups and downs of adulthood, right? Wrong. As many as 20% of women will change shoe size during pregnancy, with many of these not returning to their previous size after birth. This is due to a hormone called relaxin, which as well as allowing a woman’s body to stretch to accommodate a baby, also allows the joints in the feet to stretch.

For most women, the change is less than 5mm, so the difference isn’t noticeable, but for many others, the need for new shoes is right up there with baby grows and nappies.

Toenails shouldn’t be cut on a curve – TRUE

When it comes to trimming your nails, shape matters in more ways than one. Cutting toenails into a curved shape can cause serious damage to the nail bed, resulting in ingrown nails and infection. While the top edge of your nail may have a natural curve, the corners should never be rounded off toward the nail bed. Instead, nails should be left a little long and simply trimmed along the top to create a natural shape.

Be sure to use the right nail clippers too, as the smaller clippers made for fingernails aren’t designed for the thicker structure of toenails. This twin set of clippers by Tweezerman are a great investment and will last for years.

Removing dead skin on feet keeps them healthy – TRUE

While rough, dry skin on feet isn’t going to cause you any health issues on its own, it can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. As your feet sweat, the dead skin can become moist and create the perfect environment for conditions such as athlete’s foot (particularly in the warmer areas between the toes).

Keep on top of your foot health with a regular exfoliation using Cowshed Revive Foot Scrub and follow with a moisturiser, such as Clarins Foot Beauty Treatment Cream.

Stinky feet signals poor hygiene – MYTH

There are a number of reasons that people experience smelly feet, due to exercise, footwear, diet or health conditions. It’s an embarrassing problem, and one which often comes with a stigma of having poor hygiene; this simply isn’t the case. If you are battling foot odour and need a short-term fix while you find a treatment option, we have just the thing.

Before starting your day, apply Dr Haushka Deoderising Foot Cream. Infused with rosemary oil, silk and rice starch, the cream absorbs moisture, softens the skin and deodorises. Then, when out and about, keep a can of Elemis Tea Tree S.O.S. Spray close at hand. With antibacterial properties, it not only smells great but keeps odours at bay and prevents bacteria from taking hold.

Whether you love or loathe your feet, show them a little love this week. After all, they’ve earned it. Shop All Feet Now.

allbeauty & The Little Princess Trust

This Autumn, one special member of our allbeauty team has made an inspirational change by donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust. We have had the pleasure to travel with Maggie through her journey and ask all the questions before she takes the chop.

1inch? 2inch? 3inch? Read More…

#1 Tell us a little bit about yourself, what do you do at allbeauty?

My name’s Maggie, I started at allbeauty in 2016 as a Christmas temp in Customer Services, then moved up to Stock Management after nearly a year where I edit product images.

#2 You’re chopping off your hair and donating it, that’s amazing! Could you share insight on why you are doing this?

It’s a bit of a weird reason as my inspiration was bald before the cancer! My Papa was diagnosed with cancer several years ago and he was always so strong, he didn’t complain once and was always so kind and patient even when you could see him in the worst pain. It got me thinking about how I would handle being in his situation and in all honesty, the thought of losing my hair would be terrifying. Thinking about what he went through happening to a child, and on top of that losing their hair is heartbreaking and I just wanted to help.

#3 How long have you been growing your hair?

About a year and a half!

#4 What products have you been using?

I use a mask about once a week (sometimes every other week if I’m feeling lazy), I love the TIGI Bed Head Urban Antidotes Resurrection Treatment Mask. I have naturally slightly dry hair and it feels so silky after using this. Every day I use the Macadamia Natural Oil  Healing Oil Treatment, and sometimes if I know I’m washing my hair the next day I’ll slather on a load before bed.

#5 Do you know how much hair you are donating?

The minimum donation is 7 inches and I should be donating around 10 inches. I would love to grow it again after this and donate even more!

#6 What happens when you donate?

Donated hair is sent to a special factory it’s hand knotted into a wig base, and a single wig can contain up to 10 different donations. The hair is never coloured or treated, so it is always a high quality finish and they are able to offer a range of different natural colours and lengths so suit every individual. A family can then request a wig and can visit an approved salon to choose a wig and have it styled.

#7 How do you feel about donating your hair?

I’m excited to be helping someone out there feel a bit better during such a difficult period in their lives, but at the same time it’s so sad that any one has to go through this in the first place. Cutting the hair off itself is the easy bit, I’m totally fine with that!

#8 What hairstyle are you going for next and where will you be getting it cut?

The ultimate trim! Nothing fancy, just chopping it off around the shoulder so that I can grow it again without having to wait for layers to grow out or anything. The allbeauty salon in Guernsey, the staff there are so and I trust them fully with my locks!

#9 What the first thing you are going to do with your new hair style?

Try and learn how to style short hair!

#10 What’s your advice for someone that is thinking about getting their haircut and donating it?

Just do it, it will grow back!

The Power of Charcoal: Novex’s tips for healthier hair

We were intrigued by Novex’s new Powerful Charcoal Range. We’ve seen activated charcoal make a grand entrance into the teeth whitening category, and wanted to know more about how it can be used to improve our hair. We caught up with Novex to find out exactly how it works…

Why do I need to detox my hair?

On a daily basis, our hair comes in contact with all the impurities and toxins present in the atmosphere, especially in urban areas where there is more pollution. These toxins and pollutant impurities, such as particles, are deposited in the hair and scalp. They accumulate and end up clogging the root and capillary fiber, which impairs the absorption of nutrients and the growth of the strands.

These polluting impurities need to be removed effectively and without harming the strands as well as leaving them protected against external aggressions caused by pollution.

What do the charcoal products look like? Are they black?

All the products from Novex The Powerful Charcoal line have a standard white look and feel. The mask and the conditioner have a creamy and consistent appearance, which allows the strands to be well coated. The shampoo has a liquid consistency so that the product spreads well through the scalp. The spray also has a creamy consistency, so as to protect the conditioned strands.

Where does the charcoal come from?

Activated charcoal, rather than ordinary charcoal, is charcoal especially obtained from the burning of certain woods, cork or fruit peels (e.g. coconut) under very specific conditions. Burning must be at high temperatures (8000 °C – 10000 °C) and low in oxygen. This specific firing gives activated charcoal unique properties such antipollution and detoxification.

How often do I need to use them?

The Powerful Charcoal products are a daily care range and have been developed specifically to be part of the daily routine of capillary care (regular use).

What are the three biggest mistakes people make in hair care and how can they be avoided?

  1. Blow-drying your hair without heat protection
    •  Spraying a heat protector on your hair proactively protects hair from heat damage, plus it seals in shine, calms frizz, and keeps hair from becoming dry.
  2. Not using a conditioner
    • If you’re avoiding using conditioner for fear that your hair will become too flat, think again, you can achieve volume with the right conditioner. Just like your face, your scalp needs moisture too.
  3. Forgetting to moisturize and nourish your hair
    • Hair loses moisture quickly. You can use special hair masks according to your hair type to address this problem. Even if you think your hair is relatively healthy, the change of seasons can be hard on your strands, so it’s good to get in the habit of using a mask weekly to make sure you’re giving your hair the moisture it needs.

Like the rest of our body, our hair reacts to the world around us which is why detoxing, protecting, conditioning and nourishing your hair is important if it’s going to look its best.

Seoulista Q&A: An Exclusive with Founder Una McGurk

Seoulista Beauty sources innovative skincare from Seoul, widely regarded as the epicentre of beauty. We explore this exciting industry – known as K-beauty – to discover the latest, award-winning innovations and bring them to your doorstep. South Korea, the country that brought you the BB cream and other game-changing beauty staples.

Here’s everything you need to know about Seoulista Beauty.

Where does the Seoulista brand take its inspiration from?

‘Glass skin’ was first made famous by the women of South Korea, with their luminous, plumped, poreless and oh-so-smooth complexions. World leaders in beauty innovation, we take inspiration from their flawless complexions and revolutionary hi-tech skincare staples, to bring K-Beauty to the discerning beauty lovers of the Western world.

What is your mantra and how do you live by this?

Great Skin. No Fuss. No Drama.

Sometimes there is just too much to do for busy people, so we have dedicated ourselves to making radiant healthy skin one less thing to worry about. The Seoulista mantra is about delivering professional-grade treatments in the time it takes to have a cup of tea; our Instant Facials infuse the epidermis with 25ml of active ingredients to deliver instant, long-lasting results all in one simple step. No Fuss. No Drama.

What has been the highlight of the Seoulista story so far?

At Seoulista we like to make skincare fun, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t serious; the exceptional reception we have had from industry insiders proves that, and each of our 8 awards so far ha been an incredible highlight for us. It’s made every long-haul flight to Korea and late-night phone-call with our wonderful team of dermatologists totally worth it!

How do your masks works?

Unlike many other typical ‘sheet masks’, our hi-tech fibre is made from a 100% natural and biodegradable ingredient called biocellulose, created from fermented coconuts. First used in medicine to treat skin burns, it has an unrivaled ability to work in synergy with the skin and hold and distribute more than 100 times its weight in water.  So it drinks up our serums, and then once on the skin, drives the powerful ingredients in to the epidermis for instant transformational results.

What makes your masks different?

Biocellulose, mentioned above, is one of the key factors that make our Instant Facials stand-out from the crowd, as well as the quality ingredients we use in our serums. But what separates us even further, is that every product has been formulated and tested by dermatologists to ensure the utmost efficacy and results for the skin.

What’s your number one tip for choosing a face mask this spring?

With the spring comes glorious days enjoying the sun and the great outdoors, so choosing products that protect the skin from external aggressors is key. Look out for products that use vitamin C as this offers an antioxidant shield for the skin, as well as helping to stimulate collagen production at the same time – what’s not to like?! Our Brightening Instant Facial is perfect for that vitamin C infusion and dewy springtime glow. Don’t forget your SPF too though!

Celebrating International Women’s Day With Dr. Hauschka: Q&A

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and this year allbeauty are celebrating  the women who are bossing the beauty industry! We caught up with one of our favourite beauty brands putting the girl in girl power…

Elisabeth Sigmund Dr Hauschka allbauty blogBorn in 1914, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and developer of the Dr. Hauschka treatments, Elisabeth Sigmund had always been fascinated by cosmetics and the powers of medicinal plant extracts. After founding her own cosmetics institute in 1952 with the blessing of the Swedish King, Elisabeth received a letter from Dr. Rudolf Hauschka inviting her to share her ideas for a new, ‘very special’ approach to skincare, and in 1967 Dr. Hauschka – or Dr. Hauschka Healing Skin Care By Elizabeth Sigmund’ was launched.

We caught up with  Dr. Hauschka’s Katie Holmes, who talked to us about how Elizabeth Sigmund inspires her, her favourite products and what advice she’d give to young women today…

Who?

Katie Holmes, Head of Sales and Education at Dr. Hauschka.

Why does the beauty industry mean to you?

The beauty industry has been my home for over 25 years and it is both liberating and fulfilling. There are not many industries that enable you to make such a difference to people’s lives through interaction, product and environment. I have been privileged to work in many areas of this industry and the warmth and generosity from those I have encountered has shaped me today.

What does gender balance mean to you?

Fairness to all. Working with Dr. Hauschka, gender isn’t a word we use to define who should be using which product. Instead, we look at conditions of the skin to define the regime.

What makes a good #girlboss?

The ability to listen, be fair, to see the big picture and to conduct your business with the greatest of respects for others and yourself.

What motivates you to succeed?

My daughter! She amazes me every day, and I always try to do better than yesterday in order for me to become her inspiration to succeed in her life’s journey

What advice would you give to young women who want to make it within the beauty – or any – industry?

DO IT! Don’t hold back. Know and research your business, execute with excellence and always smile! This industry can be fierce so stand tall and be confident in yourself and your abilities.

Who inspires you?

Professionally, Elizabeth Sigmund – one of the co-founders of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. She was a woman beyond her years with future-proof ideas and ideals. In a male-orientated environment she educated herself and was dynamic in her cause.

What are you favourite Dr Hauschka products?

Our beautiful Rose Day Cream has to be top of my list! Not only does this exquisite product tell the story of our brand, its unwavering scent of the damask rose radiates my skin to give me an all day glow, as well as a long term solution to my skincare needs – no quick fixes here!

I am also a huge fan of our NEW Eye Make-up Remover. Like all of our products, it is 100% natural and works wonderfully to remove even the most stubborn eye make-up. It’s become and essential in my skin care routine.

Moroccanoil Exclusive: Carmen Tal Q&A

Celebrating International Women’s Day: An Exclusive Interview With Moroccanoil Co-founder Carmen Tal

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and allbeauty are celebrating the women bossing it in the beauty industry! We talk to Moroccanoil co-founder Carmen Tal about what motivates her to succeed, the women that inspire her and her must-have Moroccanoil products…

10 years ago, Carmen Tal found herself away from home with dry, colour-damaged hair when she discovered the amazing benefits of argan oil for her hair.  Inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, sea and culture, her goal has been to share the transformative powers of argan oil-infused products with women across the world to help them feel empowered.

Carmen Tal moroccanoil founder allbeauty blogWho?

Carmen Tal, Moroccanoil Co-Founder

What does the beauty industry mean to you?

Like most things, the beauty industry is constantly evolving. For example, over the last decade the beauty business has changed significantly based on ever-changing consumer demands. Today, accessibility and convenience are more important than ever. For us, we strive to continue to expand our offerings as a complete lifestyle beauty brand across all of today’s key consumer touchpoints to fulfil the needs of the modern customer. Nowadays, consumers are also much more educated in their purchases so as a company, transparency is becoming increasingly important.

My greatest inspiration was to listen to the inspiration around me… and to listen to the women around me, for whom I created Moroccanoil – Carmen Tal

What does gender balance mean to you?

I truly believe that being successful in your career or business is independent of whether you are a man or woman – we are equally capable of achieving anything we set our minds to. I am grateful for the fact that my parents raised my brothers and I to believe that anything is possible and did not treat us any differently based on our gender. They encouraged us to tap into our individual creativity and taught us the importance of a strong work ethic. Women and men alike making their way up the ladder should make it a priority to stay constantly informed and always be ready for change – in business today, it’s all about adapting to the constantly changing needs of the marketplace.

What makes a good #girlboss?

I think female business leaders today have an important responsibility to lead and inspire others by example. To me, inspiration is the vehicle for empowerment to pursue one’s dreams, and when you empower women, the sky’s the limit! It truly only takes one moment of inspiration to ignite positive change – the Moroccanoil brand was created from an inspired moment! Additionally, it’s so important for women to support one other – together, we can make an even more profound impact on the world around us.

What motivates you to succeed?

Women who inspire other women to follow their dreams and who are committed to making change for others. I feel most inspired when I meet amazing women who have genuine passion and love for what they do, and aren’t afraid to take risks! I find that passion is contagious, and I think it’s so important to be passionate about whatever it is that you do.

What advice would you give to young women who want to make it within the beauty – or any – industry?

I believe the key to success it to have a strong worth ethic  and staying continually focused on your goals. Trust and follow your instincts.

Who inspires you?

Neom Exclusive: Nicola Elliott Q&A

Celebrating International Women’s Day: An Exclusive Interview With Neom Founder Nicola Elliot

In this exclusive interview, Neom Organics founder Nicola Elliott reveals what inspired her to walk away from a hectic life as a fashion editor and start her own award-winning wellbeing business…

After noticing her wellbeing had taken a dive for the worst, former Glamour Magazine Editor Nicola Elliott gave it all up to train as an aromatherapist and nutritionist. She founded Neom Organics in 2005, running it from her two-bedroom Islington flat.  Twelve years later, Neom is one of the most recognisable and best-selling wellness brands in the UK.

We caught up with Nicola to see what inspired her to start her own business and how she balances family and work life…

Nicola elliott interview allbeauty blogWhat inspired you to start NEOM?

I suffered from anxiety and started creating 100% natural blends to help. They worked! I then followed on with a sleep blend for my sister who was suffering with insomnia, then my husband to boost his energy… when he left the house with 32 bottles for the football team I thought then we may be on to something!

Who are the women that inspire you?

There’s so many… my Mum, Sister, best friends, and our customers!

How do you juggle family and work life?

I have a great husband, Dave, who I tag team with. I couldn’t do it solo!  We do 50/50 around the home and with the kids.

Poor sleep, stress, low energy and mood swings. This kick-started my own wellbeing journey”

What advice do you have for starting a business?

See if you get traction whilst working your day job first… find a partner with different skills to you and prepare for it to take longer than you think. Hire the best people you can afford as soon as you can. Then… have fun!

What are your top wellbeing tips?

Create your own wellbeing toolkit – what works for one person won’t work for the next! It’s about finding those few things that you enjoy otherwise it becomes a chore, so whether that’s getting 5 minutes of fresh air at lunch time, meeting with friends, a yoga class once a week or a run; there really are small steps that we can take to feel our best every day. I always see time for myself as necessity not a luxury and it’s a work in progress, but I try not to sweat the small stuff!

You can’t look good if you don’t feel good! – Nicola Elliott, Neom founder

How To Get Rainbow Hair – EVERYTHING You Need To Know

Want Rainbow Hair, but don’t know where to start? We asked Rainbow Hair pioneer Anya Goy, those all-important questions…

rainbow hair anya goyIt feels like a new trend, but rainbow hair isn’t new – rewind back to the days of Scene Kids, Emo and even Punk and you’ll find plenty of examples. But over the last few years rainbow, galaxy, pastel and unicorn hair has taken the art to new levels and it’s firmly here to stay. Professional hair artist, author and educator Anya Goy was one of the pioneers of the modern-day rainbow look, beginning around 14  years ago (alongside fellow artists Ursula Goff and Melanie Dawn Harter). Anya trained with Vidal Sassoon and L’Oreal and worked extensively in the UK & Australia, including time with Wella and Toni & Guy, and it’s very likely you’ve already seen, pinned, liked and shared some of her own creations. Currently working with allbeauty, we took the chance to ask her everything we were dying to know (pun intended) about how to achieve rainbow hair….

Is rainbow hair suitable for everyone? Of any age?

rainbow hair guy

Absolutely! I’ve done young kids all the way to grandmas. The only criteria for wearing colourful hair is confidence and a sense of fun!

Is it harder to achieve on dark hair? Any hair colours that don’t respond well?

rainbow hair galaxy

These rainbow hair colours show up best on blonde hair. This is why usually, we need to pre-bleach the hair first to create a clean, blonde, blank canvas. If you are naturally darker, it can take longer to do this pre-lighten step, but you can still achieve your desired results. However if you have dyed dark hair, especially box black colour you have done at home, it will not be possible to get a clean blonde canvas. That’s not to say you can’t have some fun with it! You will simply be looking at a more limited colour palette. You would be able to achieve sunset designs, reds, burgundy wine tones, dark purples, oranges, sometimes even dark pinks and neon yellows are possible!

Isn’t rainbow hair really high maintenance?

rainbow hair fade

Not at all! It can often be less maintenance than natural colours. I have some clients who only need to visit me 2-3 times a year! Following the proper home hair care routine is what makes a massive difference. With all my colourful creations I give personal aftercare and maintenance advice. Just as a handmade designer garment comes with washing instructions, so do these unique hair designs. My clients have excellent long-lasting results with beautiful transitions to pastel shades as it fades.

What should I ask for at my stylist consultation / should I bring pictures?

Finding the right colourist is more important than what you should ask for. Not all hairdressers are experienced with rainbow hair, some may not even stock the colours. Do your research, look before you book. It’s a good sign if a salon stocks colour brands like Pulp Riot, Manic Panic, Directions, Pravana or Goldwell Elumen products, and uses bond builders like Olaplex. It’s also worth checking out their work on social media so make sure you like it. Go in for a full consultation and quote before you book. Finding the right hair artist is like finding the right tattoo artist. If you like their style, you will be able to trust them to create something you will love. Yes bring pictures, but also bring an open mind.

Which is easier to achieve: lighter pastels or dark colours, and can I get a contrast with both?

rainbow hair blonde

Totally depends on your current hair colour. For example, if you already have been having highlights for a while, pastel colours are super easy to achieve. But if you have naturally dark Hispanic or Asian hair, pastels will be harder to achieve. It’s best to discuss your goals in a consultation with your colourist. Of course you can get a contrast with both pastel and deeper tones, but again it’s best to discuss your desired colour palette with a professional who understands what colours are ‘friends’ and what colours won’t work together.

Will it destroy my hair’s health?!

If I felt the pre-lightening step would destroy a client’s hair, I would not even consider colouring it. In some cases, I’ve even had clients say their hair feel better after colour than it did before, especially when mixing a bond builder such as Olaplex or Smart Bond into every step. The hair’s health should always come first, no matter if it’s rainbow or even classic natural colours. If you have any concerns about the condition of your hair discuss it with your colourist before you book.

If I decide to go back to my normal hair colour, is it easy to re-colour rainbow hair?

Once you go rainbow you never want to go back! 😉 That said, if you needed to go back to natural of course you can. Some rainbow colour brands are much more highly pigmented and long-lasting than others, as such removing them can be challenging. Others are very easy to remove, and some brands will simply wash out with time. It’s important to discuss with your colourist how long you want your rainbows to last. It also depends what your normal hair colour is. Going back to brown is much easier than going back to a natural blonde.

How long (roughly!) does it take to get rainbow hair – is it a lengthy process?

rainbow hair dark

Works of art take time. A full head rainbow hair design on long hair can take between 4 and 6 hours, so bring a good book and some lunch or snack food. However, a small rainbow panel in short blonde hair can take less than 30min to apply! The more complicated the design, the longer the hair, the more challenging the starting colour… the longer it takes.

How harsh are the dyes that are used, for instance, are they vegan?

The bright rainbow colours are vegetable based dyes, no ammonia, no peroxide, highly conditioning and gradually fade from the hair. There are over 30 different brands on the market, and a lot of them are vegan. If you are vegan, check with your colourist to find out if they stock one of the vegan brands.

Anya: any question you wished clients asked (but usually don’t!)

Client: “What do you like better, Costa Coffee or M&S Choc Chip cookies? Never mind I’ll just bring you both!” 😉
