Fresh, Fruity or Floral? The Summer fragrances which inspire us at allbeauty

May marks the start of flower show season, so what better time of year is there to explore and embrace the world of fresh, fruity and floral scents? Read on to discover more about the summer fragrances which inspire us at allbeauty.

Floral

Penhaligon’s Blasted BloomCreated as an ode to the British coast and countryside, Penhaligon’s Blasted Bloom is a unique blend of wild berries, eglantine rose, hawthorn, pink pepper, as well as some aquatic notes. It’s the perfect scent for an English rose and a topical fragrance to wear for Summer weddings, garden parties and of course, Chelsea Flower Show.

Looking for a regal floral for men? Try Penhaligon’s Esprit Du Roi for an unusual twist on a summer floral, incorporating tomato, mint and raspberry leaves with clove, jasmine and honeysuckle.

Fruity

Les Sorbets by Nina Ricci

The new range of limited edition Les Sorbets by Nina Ricci looks so delicious, we couldn’t pick just one to feature! These pastel confections launched earlier this year as part of a collaboration with Amorino ice cream. Each edition has been created by a different perfumer and contain sweet straplines such as Cocktail Frappé, Pear Granita, and Praline Glacé. We think they’d make the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon tea with friends (ice cream optional!)

Did you know? Amorino have released their own raspberry and jasmine sorbet to commemorate the fragrance range (available at selected Amorino ice cream locations until 30 June 2019).

Another exciting fruity launch for Summer 2019 is Paco Rabanne’s irresistible Olympéa Legend, which combines desert-flower and hot sand with salty-vanilla plum. This fragrance for women builds upon the Olympéa range of fragrances and is paired with Invictus Legend, a powerful grapefruit, sea salt and geranium fragrance for men.

Fresh

Christian Dior - Dior Addict Eau FraicheChristian Dior’s Dior Addict Eau Fraiche, is a favourite at allbeauty, featuring calabrian bergamot, freesia and lily-of-the-valley.

Lily-of-the-valley, also known as Muguet, was a treasured motif of Christian Dior. As well as featuring extensively in his fragrances and designs, he also used to give a sprig of the flower on the 1st May (as per French custom) to wish luck and happiness to all his workforce and clientele for the year ahead!

Perfect for: Paying homage to the stars of Cannes Film Festival – Kirsten Dunst wore a Christian Dior Lily-of-the-valley dress in 2016 when going up the famous Cannes steps.

Light & Airy

Calvin Klein Eternity AirCalvin Klein’s Eternity Air comes in two editions for men and women, both of which are light and citrus, so suitable for those who like a softer fragrance in the summer months. As you can tell by the name, these fragrances are designed to complement each other and are inspired by blue skies and fresh atmospheres. Eternity Air for Women features grapefruit oil, peony and lily of the valley, whilst Eternity Air for Men includes mandarin oil, lavender, green apple and violet.

Marc Jacob’s Daisy Dream Sunshine is a great carefree scent for summer days. Launched in January 2019 as a limited edition, this fragrance features a combination of golden raspberries, orange blossoms and solar musk, which collide together in a sparkling cocktail of whimsical happiness.

Water

Creed Virgin Island WaterStuck at your desk and need to be transported to St Tropez, Portofino or Hawaii? The following fragrances have all been inspired by the feeling of exploration, freedom and azure waters.

The formulation of Creed’s Virgin Island Water was inspired by a sailing trip to the Caribbean – its adventurous and refreshing notes include lime, copra, hibiscus, ylang ylang and ginger. Suitable for both men and women, it really captures the essence of summer and will help you to feel like the sun is shining down on you in a tropical climate!

Moschino Forever Sailing is another ocean favourite – a fragrance designed for men; lemon, grapefruit and ice mint are combined with juniper and patchouli to emphasise fun, excitement and the power of nature.

Allbeauty’s Top Seasonal Fragrance Tips

  1. Wearing a scent that it is evocative of summer can help you get into the holiday spirit.
  2. Heat & rising temperatures can intensify the sense of smell, which is why switching heavier ‘Winter’ scents for lighter ones can help you feel more energetic
  3. Don’t leave your perfume in the sun (or near hot temperatures – this includes your bathroom), as this can shorten the perfume’s lifespan.
  4. Headed to a festival or on a summer vacation which requires travel? Take a look at allbeauty’s range of Travalo Atomisers, perfect for decanting your favourite fragrance from glass bottles and taking with you on the go.
  5. You can make new fragrance discoveries by using the allbeauty Fragrance Finder to filter perfumes by category.

Celebrating International Women’s Day With Dr. Hauschka

Celebrating International Women’s Day With Dr. Hauschka: Q&A

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and this year allbeauty are celebrating  the women who are bossing the beauty industry! We caught up with one of our favourite beauty brands putting the girl in girl power…

Elisabeth Sigmund Dr Hauschka allbauty blogBorn in 1914, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and developer of the Dr. Hauschka treatments, Elisabeth Sigmund had always been fascinated by cosmetics and the powers of medicinal plant extracts. After founding her own cosmetics institute in 1952 with the blessing of the Swedish King, Elisabeth received a letter from Dr. Rudolf Hauschka inviting her to share her ideas for a new, ‘very special’ approach to skincare, and in 1967 Dr. Hauschka – or Dr. Hauschka Healing Skin Care By Elizabeth Sigmund’ was launched.

We caught up with  Dr. Hauschka’s Katie Holmes, who talked to us about how Elizabeth Sigmund inspires her, her favourite products and what advice she’d give to young women today…

Who?

Katie Holmes, Head of Sales and Education at Dr. Hauschka.

Why does the beauty industry mean to you?

The beauty industry has been my home for over 25 years and it is both liberating and fulfilling. There are not many industries that enable you to make such a difference to people’s lives through interaction, product and environment. I have been privileged to work in many areas of this industry and the warmth and generosity from those I have encountered has shaped me today.

What does gender balance mean to you?

Fairness to all. Working with Dr. Hauschka, gender isn’t a word we use to define who should be using which product. Instead, we look at conditions of the skin to define the regime.

What makes a good #girlboss?

The ability to listen, be fair, to see the big picture and to conduct your business with the greatest of respects for others and yourself.

What motivates you to succeed?

My daughter! She amazes me every day, and I always try to do better than yesterday in order for me to become her inspiration to succeed in her life’s journey

What advice would you give to young women who want to make it within the beauty – or any – industry?

DO IT! Don’t hold back. Know and research your business, execute with excellence and always smile! This industry can be fierce so stand tall and be confident in yourself and your abilities.

Who inspires you?

Professionally, Elizabeth Sigmund – one of the co-founders of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care. She was a woman beyond her years with future-proof ideas and ideals. In a male-orientated environment she educated herself and was dynamic in her cause.

What are you favourite Dr Hauschka products?

Our beautiful Rose Day Cream has to be top of my list! Not only does this exquisite product tell the story of our brand, its unwavering scent of the damask rose radiates my skin to give me an all day glow, as well as a long term solution to my skincare needs – no quick fixes here!

I am also a huge fan of our NEW Eye Make-up Remover. Like all of our products, it is 100% natural and works wonderfully to remove even the most stubborn eye make-up. It’s become and essential in my skin care routine.

Moroccanoil Exclusive: Carmen Tal Q&A

Celebrating International Women’s Day: An Exclusive Interview With Moroccanoil Co-founder Carmen Tal

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and allbeauty are celebrating the women bossing it in the beauty industry! We talk to Moroccanoil co-founder Carmen Tal about what motivates her to succeed, the women that inspire her and her must-have Moroccanoil products…

10 years ago, Carmen Tal found herself away from home with dry, colour-damaged hair when she discovered the amazing benefits of argan oil for her hair.  Inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, sea and culture, her goal has been to share the transformative powers of argan oil-infused products with women across the world to help them feel empowered.

Carmen Tal moroccanoil founder allbeauty blogWho?

Carmen Tal, Moroccanoil Co-Founder

What does the beauty industry mean to you?

Like most things, the beauty industry is constantly evolving. For example, over the last decade the beauty business has changed significantly based on ever-changing consumer demands. Today, accessibility and convenience are more important than ever. For us, we strive to continue to expand our offerings as a complete lifestyle beauty brand across all of today’s key consumer touchpoints to fulfil the needs of the modern customer. Nowadays, consumers are also much more educated in their purchases so as a company, transparency is becoming increasingly important.

My greatest inspiration was to listen to the inspiration around me… and to listen to the women around me, for whom I created Moroccanoil – Carmen Tal

What does gender balance mean to you?

I truly believe that being successful in your career or business is independent of whether you are a man or woman – we are equally capable of achieving anything we set our minds to. I am grateful for the fact that my parents raised my brothers and I to believe that anything is possible and did not treat us any differently based on our gender. They encouraged us to tap into our individual creativity and taught us the importance of a strong work ethic. Women and men alike making their way up the ladder should make it a priority to stay constantly informed and always be ready for change – in business today, it’s all about adapting to the constantly changing needs of the marketplace.

What makes a good #girlboss?

I think female business leaders today have an important responsibility to lead and inspire others by example. To me, inspiration is the vehicle for empowerment to pursue one’s dreams, and when you empower women, the sky’s the limit! It truly only takes one moment of inspiration to ignite positive change – the Moroccanoil brand was created from an inspired moment! Additionally, it’s so important for women to support one other – together, we can make an even more profound impact on the world around us.

What motivates you to succeed?

Women who inspire other women to follow their dreams and who are committed to making change for others. I feel most inspired when I meet amazing women who have genuine passion and love for what they do, and aren’t afraid to take risks! I find that passion is contagious, and I think it’s so important to be passionate about whatever it is that you do.

What advice would you give to young women who want to make it within the beauty – or any – industry?

I believe the key to success it to have a strong worth ethic  and staying continually focused on your goals. Trust and follow your instincts.

Who inspires you?

I have always had great admiration for Oprah. The countless lives she has touched and the difference she has made in the world is truly remarkable! I think she is one of the most influential, inspirational women in the world today.

What are you favourite Moroccanoil products?

Moroccanoil original treatment allbeauty blogMy ultimate must-have is Moroccanoil Treatment – I have it with me at all times! I also love to treat my hair to one of the Moroccanoil Hydrating Masks, such as Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask once a week. One of my ultimate skincare secrets is to always add a few drops of our Moroccanoil Pure Argan Oil into all of my skin creams. It’s rich with moisturizing and anti-aging properties, and makes my skin glow!

Neom Exclusive: Nicola Elliott Q&A

Celebrating International Women’s Day: An Exclusive Interview With Neom Founder Nicola Elliot

In this exclusive interview, Neom Organics founder Nicola Elliott reveals what inspired her to walk away from a hectic life as a fashion editor and start her own award-winning wellbeing business…

After noticing her wellbeing had taken a dive for the worst, former Glamour Magazine Editor Nicola Elliott gave it all up to train as an aromatherapist and nutritionist. She founded Neom Organics in 2005, running it from her two-bedroom Islington flat.  Twelve years later, Neom is one of the most recognisable and best-selling wellness brands in the UK.

We caught up with Nicola to see what inspired her to start her own business and how she balances family and work life…

Nicola elliott interview allbeauty blogWhat inspired you to start NEOM?

I suffered from anxiety and started creating 100% natural blends to help. They worked! I then followed on with a sleep blend for my sister who was suffering with insomnia, then my husband to boost his energy… when he left the house with 32 bottles for the football team I thought then we may be on to something!

Who are the women that inspire you?

There’s so many… my Mum, Sister, best friends, and our customers!

How do you juggle family and work life?

I have a great husband, Dave, who I tag team with. I couldn’t do it solo!  We do 50/50 around the home and with the kids.

Poor sleep, stress, low energy and mood swings. This kick-started my own wellbeing journey”

What advice do you have for starting a business?

See if you get traction whilst working your day job first… find a partner with different skills to you and prepare for it to take longer than you think. Hire the best people you can afford as soon as you can. Then… have fun!

What are your top wellbeing tips?

Create your own wellbeing toolkit – what works for one person won’t work for the next! It’s about finding those few things that you enjoy otherwise it becomes a chore, so whether that’s getting 5 minutes of fresh air at lunch time, meeting with friends, a yoga class once a week or a run; there really are small steps that we can take to feel our best every day. I always see time for myself as necessity not a luxury and it’s a work in progress, but I try not to sweat the small stuff!

You can’t look good if you don’t feel good! – Nicola Elliott, Neom founder

Kérastase Meets Megan Hess

Kérastase Meets International Fashion Artist Megan Hess

We find out more about her work, her love for Kérastase haircare and just how she became a global Instagram success in the world of fashion illustration…

Megan Hess allbeauty blogInternational fashion artist Megan Hess has worked with some of the most prestigious fashion designers and luxury brands around the world, including Dior, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Jimmy Choo and Tiffany and Co. to name just  a few!

Her work has appeared on the bottom of luxury swimming pools in Dubai to bespoke homes in Paris and New York and on the walls of the most coveted fashion houses around the world. Megan is the author of 4 best selling books and she illustrates all of her work with a bespoke Montblanc pen, who she affectionately calls Monty.

How did you start illustrating? What is your background?

I studied Graphic Design because it felt like a ‘real’ job in the art world, but I really always wanted to be a Fashion Illustrator – I just never knew back then that it was a possible career choice! After working as an Art Director in ad agencies for several years I packed everything up and moved to London. It was in London that I worked in a million different creative jobs and in my final job there I realized that I had a burning desire to be an artist. At this time I’d became the Art Director for Liberty Department Store. Whist I loved art-directing fashion I loved illustrating it more. I started to do very small illustrations for Liberty and from this art directors saw my work and little commissions began to follow. After about a year I found myself with non-stop illustration work and I knew I was going to do this forever.

Megan Hess Kerastase illustration allbeauty blog

As my clients got bigger and better I was able to be a little more selective and just work on briefs that I knew had a great creative opportunity. Then in 2006 I got a call in the middle of the night from Candace Bushnell’s publisher asking if I would illustrate the cover of ‘Sex and the City’. This really was my big break and suddenly my work was seen on a global stage. After this was released I was contacted by TIME magazine in New York to create portraits for them.. Following this, I began illustrating for Tiffany & Co, Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Vanity Fair, Italian Vogue, Bergdorf Goodman, Versace, Prada and Ferragamo….. Ironically, at the same time as my work finally took off I had my first baby!! Its funny, I always tell people that I haven’t really slept since 2006!!

How has Instagram helped to shape your career?

When I first started posting on social media it was purely just a creative outlet for me and I never saw it as part of my business. As things grew and my followers really increased I realised how powerful it was – suddenly I could post an image of a new print collection and the whole collection could sell out in 20 minutes! What I love most about social media though, is that it’s almost like your own edited magazine and I love that I have complete control of the content. You can essentially show your world through your own eyes.

Kérastase was the first hair care brand that you collaborated with, why Kérastase?

Kérastase is the best haircare in the world and I always knew that if I was going to collaborate with a brand in that category it had to be Kérastase. It’s also a brand that I have been using on my own hair since I was a teenager. The products that I’ve used within the brand have changed as my hair has changed over time. Initially it was all about gaining volume – now it’s the opposite and it’s all about calming and counteracting the frizz! It’s nice to work with a brand that you admire and trust.

What does the Kérastase woman represent?

I see the Kérastase woman as someone who is successful and positive in the way she leads her life. She wants to look her best but she also wants her beauty and hair rituals to be a natural part of her life. I see her travelling, working, creating the life she wants to lead. She is someone who is selective about the products she chooses.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere! I seem to find it when I’m least expecting it. I love beautiful photography books, travelling and just getting out of the studio and seeing other exciting things that are happening in the world. In terms of subject matter, I find people and all their differences and quirks the most inspiring. I love seeing how other people dress, live and create. I’m an observer and I love all the little details that make people interesting. I also think travel has a huge influence on me and provides endless inspiration.

How is your work different to other fashion illustrations? How did you find your signature style?

I think all illustrators have their own style. I always think of my work as capturing an imaginary world of chic women in amazing locations. I always want my work to inspire or bring a smile to the viewer. When students ask me how they can find ‘their style?’ I always say… ‘just keep drawing and your style will find you!’

Why do you think women connect with you?

I think they connect with me because we share a common love of beautiful things. I love to draw and create beautiful images that are inspiring and I think we can all do with injecting a little beauty and inspiration into our lives.

Who says fashion stays on the runway?! Check out our favourite looks below:

1. The Messy Bun Is Back

Not that it ever really left, but with all its variations it’s been a while since we’ve seen a messy bun that wasn’t teamed with PJS and a lazy Sunday morning… The perfect compliment to the  colourful beading and embroidery seen at Tata Naka, International Artistic Director and British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Cos Sakkas was inspired by the styles of 60s and 80s supermodels to create these messy yet eloquent buns.

To create this look, Cos used label.m Texturising Volume Spray to create height, followed by label.m Hairspray to set the look:

Step 3

Step 1: Gather hair into a high ponytail and use label.m Texturizing Volume Spray around the surface and edge

Step 2: Pull the ponytail upwards and loosely secure with elastic, then drop down towards the crown to create texture and pin in place.

Step 3: Structure the hair to form a messy bun and pull out strands around the hair line and nape of the neck to create texture.

2. Top Knots Are Top Of The List

Another look usually associated with lounging around on the sofa watching Netflix on the sofa, the top knot has had a utilitarianupgrade from stylist Indira Schauwecker where natural twisted knots complimented Paul Costelloe’s striking military-inspired looks.

Step 2: Combing the hair up to the top of the head brushing through to smooth ponytail. Apply hairspray for grip and using a fine comb to create shape but not to make perfect giving a really effortess look.

Step 3: Tie elastic firmly to secure the ponytail. Using a tail end comb to loosen so making the silhouette more natural looking and enhancing texture around hairline.

Step 4: Spray label.m Texturising Volume Spray into ponytail and wrap around the top of head deliberately leaving the ends out. Pin to secure and add a small amount of label.m Hairspray to finish.

3. Soft Waves Are All The Rage

With the the designer’s approach to minimalism in mind, Indira and the TONI&GUY session team created soft, miminalist waves for the fifth season i-am-chen runway show. Romantic yet effortless, soft waves offer an elegantly classic base for colourful hair accessories featured  to bring fun and a light-heated spirit to the audience.

Step 1: Apply label.m Extra Strong Mousse and blow-dry smooth section-by-section with a grooming brush.

Step 2: Use  hairspray and take wider sections for the creation of deep waves. Taking a small tong on each section – wrap the hair tightly around the barrel for up to eight – 10 seconds. Release – then hold in place with section clips.

Step 3: Gently brush back the hair section by section – pushing in one direction, and then using the tong to almost indent the waves with the comb held parallel to form the deep waves. Apply a little label.m Shine Mist along the length of the hair as you go.

Step 4: In contrast to the dry texture of the waves – liberally spritz the top only with Shine Mist for a distinct high shine appearance. Set with Hairspray.

Which Essential Oil Is Best For My Skin Type?

Which Essential Oil Is Best For My Skin Type?

There is a lot of buzz around Essential Oils but what are they and why do you need them in your skincare routine? We spoke to the experts at  Decléor to find out how to choose the best for your skin type…

To find the right Essential Oils for your skin type, you first need to understand what your skin goal is; are you looking for glow, to reduce blemishes, or to target signs of ageing? Decléor have pioneered a range of  Aromessence Oil Serums, each with their own specific blend of Essential Oils, to target specific skin needs…

First Thing’s First: What are Essential Oils?

Essential Oils are small but very powerful compounds – one single drop of Essential Oil contains 150 botanical actives!

Where do Essential Oils come from?

Essential Oils come from plants. They are grown in the heart of the plant but only 1 in 10 plants can produce them. They help the plant avoid disease, heal and defend themselves.

Why are Essential Oils good for my skin?

Because Essential Oils are only grown from the fittest plants, they are incredibly powerful and are known to have the ability to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin that other chemical compounds can’t. They are highly volatile and lipophilic and have an incredible affinity to the skin. So, it’s not just the skin of today that is benefitting, but the skin of tomorrow too

Essential Oils for Oily Skin

Oily skin is caused by overproduction of sebum and it’s a common myth that using an oil-based serum will make your skin more greasy. Over-cleansing and using products that strip the skin will actually cause your skin to become oilier as the skin works to replace the lost oil. Try Aromessence Ylang Cananga Oil Serum twice a day with Ylang Ylang Essential Oil to reduce shine, improve skin texture and reduce blemishes.

Essential Oils for Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin affects most women at some time in the year. Often, your moisturiser works in the morning but by lunchtime, your skin can start to look dry again. Try Aromessence Neroli Amara Oil Serum to lock in hydration all day long, with Essential Oils of Sweet Orange this serum is clinically proven to protect against the signs of pollution whilst leaving your skin with a glow.

Essentials Oils for First Signs of Ageing

Our skin starts to age at about 25 years old, with the loss of collagen starting from 30 years old. It can be hard to know what to do when you start to see the lines and wrinkles appearing but it is important to target these signs of ageing when they first appear.
