Vitamin C

Who among us doesn’t want brighter, younger and more radiant skin?

Vitamin C’s importance as a must-have beauty ingredient cannot be understated. With some of Instagram’s top dermatologists citing the ingredient as a necessity in everyone’s skin care regime, its popularity shows no signs of abating – and there’s multiple reasons why.

Do you have a specific skin issue you want help with? There’s a good chance Vitamin C’s famed multi-tasking ability will help. This staple ingredient can be found in everything: from cleansers to serums to moisturizers and masks – and even shampoo and conditioner too. In fact, not many ingredients are as hard working as Vitamin C!

What is Vitamin C?

When we hear Vitamin C, certainly ‘superfood’ and images of sun-drenched oranges come to mind. But, it’s so much more than that!

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient found naturally in certain foods including fruits (particularly citrus), green vegetables and tomatoes. As Harvard Health tell us, it is an important nutrient that is necessary for bone structure, iron absorption, skin integrity, and immune function. In fact, Vitamin C is so important as part of a healthy diet, even sailors in the 18th century carried large supplies of citrus fruits on board to stave off scurvy.

Not only that, clinical studies have demonstrated the wide-ranging benefits of this potent antioxidant when applied to the skin – many using L’ascorbic acid, a form of Vitamin C. Along with Vitamin A and SPF, Vitamin C forms part of the beauty industry’s ‘magic three’ – scientifically proven ingredients that have a transformative effect on your skin.
Who doesn’t want to use an ingredient that actually works?

How Does It Work?

Being a potent antioxidant, Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals, reducing damage from aggressors such as UV light and pollution. As a reminder of why antioxidants are such hot ingredients, think of what happens to an apple when you cut it in half and leave it– that ‘browning’ is oxidation, which antioxidants help to neutralize.

Incredibly, the benefits of Vitamin C are not just limited to its antioxidant status – it also stimulates collagen production, giving skin additional support. For those of us seeking anti-aging effects, Vitamin C also helps to improve the skin’s texture and its quality. If you suffer with inflammation, it can also help with this too.

As if having an anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect on the skin was not enough, Vitamin C also plays a role as an anti-pigmentation agent. Essentially, it inhibits an enzyme called tyrosinase, decreasing dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Who Can Benefit From Using Vitamin C?

Vitamin C’s multi-tasking abilities make it a super ingredient in skincare products aimed to treat many skincare concerns. Do you want to prevent damage from free radicals? Suffer from inflammation? Need an added boost of collagen? Want to reduce dark spots and hyper-pigmentation?  is the one for you!

What do the experts say? Countless skincare specialists champion its numerous benefits, telling us that it’s the most important ingredient in a skincare regime, after SPF. That’s high praise indeed. It’s also considered to be well-tolerated by the skin so can be used more easily than other skincare ingredients.

Vitamin C is rightly the hero ingredient that it’s claimed to be. A proven lifesaver I’m sure many of us are in need of!

Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide

We all understand protecting ourselves from the sun is important for our skin health, but with so much conflicting information out there, how do we know which products do the best job?

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two of the most widely used sunscreen ingredients, but how they work isn’t general knowledge. If chemistry isn’t your forte, we’re here to break it down for you. In this article, we’ll be explaining what these ingredients are, how they work, and whether they’re good for your skin.

What Are Zinc Oxide And Titanium Dioxide?

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two types of natural ingredients used in “physical sunscreen”.

Physical sunscreen, or mineral sunscreen, is made from natural ingredients which sit on the skin’s surface. They act as a shield, bouncing the sun’s rays off the skin.

Chemical sunscreen meanwhile, uses a combination of chemical ingredients that deactivate sunlight, converting UV rays into heat.

Dermatologists widely recommend that we choose physical sunscreen over chemical sunscreen for the following reasons:

  • It lasts longer than chemical sunscreen.
  • It is gentler on the skin and won’t clog pores.
  • It works immediately on application (chemical sunscreen doesn’t work for around 20 minutes).

What Do They Do?

In order to understand how zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work, we first need to get to the bottom of how the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays operate.

There are three different types of UV rays, UVA, UVB, and UVC. The two we most need to worry about are UVA and UVB, as UVC is filtered out by the atmosphere before it can make it to the Earth’s surface.

  • UVA rays are able to deeply penetrate our skin, damaging cells and leading to premature ageing.
  • UVB rays don’t penetrate as deeply, only reaching the skin’s surface. These are the rays that can cause sunburn and ultimately, skin cancer.

In order to protect ourselves from both UVA and UVB rays, a “broad-spectrum” or “full-spectrum” sunscreen is needed. While there are a number of natural ingredients that can shield skin from either UVA or UVB rays, there are only two ingredients that can do both – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Top tip: An easy way to remember which UV ray is responsible for an outcome is, UVA(geing) and UVB(urning).

Who Can Benefit From Using Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide?

Ultimately, we all need to be using sunscreen daily, particularly during the warmer months, but choosing the right sunscreen is an important part of the process. Which natural ingredient is best suited for your skin will depend on your skin’s sensitivity and tone.

Zinc oxide has slightly larger particles which create a slightly opaque white sheen on the skin. This makes it ideal for pale skin, as it creates a nice, even coverage, so is often used in SPF makeup products. It’s also great for those with oily skin or acne, as it has natural antimicrobial properties and is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores. Zinc oxide is also the most effective natural ingredient against both UVA and UVB rays.

Titanium dioxide has smaller particles and doesn’t leave a milky sheen, which makes it ideal for darker complexions. For this reason, it’s often used as an ingredient in cosmetics as it can offer protection without diluting the colour. Like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide is non-comedogenic, but it’s also very gentle on the skin, making it great for oily and sensitive skin alike.

What Products Contain Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide?

At allbeauty, we stock a wide range of products that include both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. While titanium dioxide is the more common of the two, increasingly, beauty brands are combining both ingredients in order to get the superior protection of zinc oxide and the gentle, invisible coverage of titanium dioxide

The Importance Of A Daily Routine with Perricone MD

How can a daily routine keep you calm in a crisis? It has become way too easy for our days to all run together in our new, surreal stay-at-home lifestyles. If you’ve skipped a shower, lived in pajamas, or slept in later than you have since your teens, you are most definitely not alone. Good habits are now regularly being broken (slacking off on your skincare routine, anyone?), and not-so-great ones are taking hold.

It’s hard to keep a routine going when you’re not going anywhere… and not just today, but for the foreseeable future. And while we may have even welcomed the respite from our hectic schedules at first, we’re now deep enough into shelter-at-home for the lack of routine to actually be detrimental to our well-being.

That’s because research regularly shows that having a routine — a set of habits or things you do everyday — is essential in keeping our brains feeling safe and secure. It’s the right conditions for our brains to thrive.

According to a study from Tel Aviv University, repetitive behaviors reduce anxiety. Another study published in Psychological Science found that people who experienced connections and regularity found more meaning in their everyday lives. And who couldn’t use a feeling of greater purpose and satisfaction right now, when it’s easier than ever to get lost in fear and the struggle to maintain normalcy? Who couldn’t benefit from a structure that helps your brain experience less stress in overwhelmingly stressful times?

Having an orderly routine — from taking a shower first thing in the morning to making your bed, to a weekly Zoom happy hour with friends — can help us feel secure, happier and safer. Here, 5 ways to feel calmer through simple, everyday actions.

While you may be able to sleep in later than you normally would, still set an alarm so that you’re getting up at the same time every day.

Start your day with a workout, some meditating, FaceTime with a loved one, a few moments drinking a cup of tea before your kids get up — anything that makes you feel good and starts your day off on a positive note.

Try to eat meals at times you normally would (this also helps keep you from packing on boredom or stress weight). Put virtual dates, calls, closet — organizing time, anything that matters to you on your calendar so that it’s scheduled with a specific time. Doing so will give flow and a sense of normalcy to your days. And of course, stick to a healthy bedtime, as sleep is key in relieving stress and anxiety, as well as regulating your emotions.

Aristotle once said that “Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting a certain way.” That was the old-school way of saying “get up, dress up and show up.”

Don’t give away your confidence and energy by not continuing to do the things that make you feel more professional, more put together, and more productive.

You wouldn’t show up to work or dinner with your friends wearing ratty old sweats and unwashed hair, so why do it now? Studies show that what we wear affects our behavior and mood. There’s even a scientific term for it: Enclothed Cognition.

There’s a reason why Girl, Wash Your Face (by Rachel Hollis) was a bestseller long before we’d ever heard of Covid-19. Gaining strength is about taking action, beginning with the smallest things… like continuing your daily skincare routine. You are important enough — and your skin is important enough — to stay the course. After all, it will be with you long after we are allowed to leave the house again.

Creating an easy, no-makeup makeup look only takes a few minutes but can do wonders in helping you to feel like the days have a normalcy to them. Makeup artist Rosalba Martone created this quick and simple routine:

  1. Start with No Makeup Foundation Serum . It creates a natural-looking, dewy complexion, thanks to alpha lipoic acid, an antioxidant and helps skin texture look smoother, reducing the look of fine lines and pores. Use your finger to pat and press wherever you need coverage to smooth out your skin tone.
  2. For a radiant glow that looks fresh and natural, mix a bit of No Makeup Blush with No Makeup Highlighter, and use your fingers to apply to the apples of cheeks. Blend upward towards the top of the ears. Or, mix Blush with No Makeup Bronzer for a bit more color as we’re heading into summer.
  3. You can also apply a tiny dot of No Makeup Bronzer to the temples, in the hollows of cheekbones and along the bridge of the nose for a very subtle contoured effect.
  4. Apply No Makeup Mascara to your lashes, focusing the majority of the application in the center of the eye to give a bit of a wider, brighter effect.
  5. Finish with No Makeup Lipstick in a shade like Original Pink, which is like your lips but with a bit more oomph.

Keep each day feeling fresh and positive by choosing a few things you’ve always wanted to learn but never had the time.

Perhaps it’s cake decorating, or working your way through a Julia Child cookbook. Maybe it’s painting with watercolors, or writing that novel you’ve always said you would if you had time. There are plenty of online programs and classes (many free or discounted right now) that can help you achieve your goals in the one hour a day you set aside for this.

As we all adjust to our new shelter-at-home lifestyles, it’s easy to not only lose track of our days, but our schedules too. But now is the time when having a routine is most important — for our health, our skin and our mental sanity. Try keeping it easy: stay organized, and pamper yourself with a simple beauty routine, like a no-makeup look that helps you feel refreshed.
