Is there any season more wonderful than Autumn? Cold wind tousling hair and scarves, the crunch of leaves under chunky boots, evenings on the sofa with a glass of Merlot – it’s the beginning of the snuggliest season.
As the evenings draw in, we’ll spend more time indoors, more time wearing woolly layers. Suddenly those floaty scents of summer will begin to jar with the autumnal atmosphere. Over the next few months, we’ll be spending more time getting cosy and snuggling up with the ones we love, so what better time to invest in a signature Autumn scent?
If you need inspiration, we’re here to guide your sense with our five top-rated fragrances for both men and women.
For a fragrance that can take you from the waters of the Mediterranean to the ski fields of the Alps, look no further than Invictus Legend by Paco Rabanne. Fresh notes of sea salt, grapefruit and the ocean are juxtaposed with bay leaf, amber and wood.
The brand-new fragrance from Lancôme may come in one of the slimmest fragrance bottles in the world (just 15mm thick), but its message is far bigger. Empowering women to look to themselves for the inspiration they need and to defy expectations. The brand dedicates the fragrance to;
“Women who dare to dream.
The leaders and innovators of tomorrow…a new generation of icons”.
Meanwhile, the brand itself has taken an inspired leap in its diversification away from tradition with the creation of a new, ‘clean’ accord – a register that has only been minimally explored to date.
To create a note consistent with the rose flower in its natural state, two essences, rose absolute and rose water, come together to form the heart of the new formula. Perhaps not unsurprisingly, as the rose has been central to the brand ever since it was chosen as its emblem. The fragrance is then lightly enhanced with a touch of jasmine whilst a trace of patchouli and an assembly of white musks form a white chypre base that brings Idôle its full elegance.
Whilst most Chypre fragrances tend to be warm and dry, almost all are built around a woody, mossy accord of bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum (from the rock rose plant). Elements of flowers, fruits or woodiness are sometimes exaggerated in chypre fragrances, keeping this category interesting – Idôle’s new ‘cleaner’ scent is certainly no exception.
Top: Bergamot essence
Heart: Rose essence, rose absolute and rose water, jasmine infusion and jasmine absolute
Base: Patchouli heart essence, cedar essence, vanilla extract
Then there’s the bottle.
The glass surfaces of the bottles are so thin that the fragrance appears to be holding itself in the palm of your hand. Lancôme state;
Powerful in its simplicity, Idôle’s faceted bottle radiates light. So sleek is its design that it appears to almost fuse with the hand. A reminder that endless possibilities are within reach.”
The Rose of Idôle
Lancôme claims both the transparency and traceability of the ingredients within its formulas.
As part of L’Oréal’s socially productive purchasing program, “Solidarity Sourcing”, Lancôme benefits from exclusive raw materials, custom-crafted for its fragrances through sustainable supply chains or those currently awaiting certification by an independent organization. One of these, the Rose, essential to the fragrance signature of Idôle, is also the subject of a development project supported by Lancôme of which the objective is to improve the positive impact of the supply chain on a social, economic and environmental scale.
We refuse to compromise between the fragrance quality of our creations and the protection of the natural resources and people who produce them.”
Rose Petal of Isparta, Turkey
Cultivated in Turkey, this essence, exclusively made for Lancôme, is obtained from hand-harvested roses and enriched with concentrated rose water. It intensifies the refreshing, verdant facets of the flower, contributing to the sparkling natural expression of Idôle. Lancôme supports this family-based industry by helping to improve agricultural practices and work conditions and by assisting in the obtainment of a “fair trade” certification. The project also helps the women working in its production to be recognized for their contributions.
Super infusion of Jasmin Grandiflorum from India
Made for Lancôme using flowers harvested by hand in the Indian province of Tamil Nadu, this infusion is produced thanks to the exclusive development of an extraction process that makes it possible to attain the best the flower has to offer. Revealing fruity petal facets with an underlying clean, intense creamy softness, it reveals the flower in a bright, modern way.
May marks the start of flower show season, so what better time of year is there to explore and embrace the world of fresh, fruity and floral scents? Read on to discover more about the summer fragrances which inspire us at allbeauty.
Created as an ode to the British coast and countryside, Penhaligon’s Blasted Bloom is a unique blend of wild berries, eglantine rose, hawthorn, pink pepper, as well as some aquatic notes. It’s the perfect scent for an English rose and a topical fragrance to wear for Summer weddings, garden parties and of course, Chelsea Flower Show.
Looking for a regal floral for men? Try Penhaligon’s Esprit Du Roi for an unusual twist on a summer floral, incorporating tomato, mint and raspberry leaves with clove, jasmine and honeysuckle.
The new range of limited edition Les Sorbets by Nina Ricci looks so delicious, we couldn’t pick just one to feature! These pastel confections launched earlier this year as part of a collaboration with Amorino ice cream. Each edition has been created by a different perfumer and contain sweet straplines such as Cocktail Frappé, Pear Granita, and Praline Glacé. We think they’d make the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon tea with friends (ice cream optional!)
Did you know? Amorino have released their own raspberry and jasmine sorbet to commemorate the fragrance range (available at selected Amorino ice cream locations until 30 June 2019).
Another exciting fruity launch for Summer 2019 is Paco Rabanne’s irresistible Olympéa Legend, which combines desert-flower and hot sand with salty-vanilla plum. This fragrance for women builds upon the Olympéa range of fragrances and is paired with Invictus Legend, a powerful grapefruit, sea salt and geranium fragrance for men.
Christian Dior’s Dior Addict Eau Fraiche, is a favourite at allbeauty, featuring calabrian bergamot, freesia and lily-of-the-valley.
Lily-of-the-valley, also known as Muguet, was a treasured motif of Christian Dior. As well as featuring extensively in his fragrances and designs, he also used to give a sprig of the flower on the 1st May (as per French custom) to wish luck and happiness to all his workforce and clientele for the year ahead!
Perfect for: Paying homage to the stars of Cannes Film Festival – Kirsten Dunst wore a Christian Dior Lily-of-the-valley dress in 2016 when going up the famous Cannes steps.
Light & Airy
Calvin Klein’s Eternity Air comes in two editions for men and women, both of which are light and citrus, so suitable for those who like a softer fragrance in the summer months. As you can tell by the name, these fragrances are designed to complement each other and are inspired by blue skies and fresh atmospheres. Eternity Air for Women features grapefruit oil, peony and lily of the valley, whilst Eternity Air for Men includes mandarin oil, lavender, green apple and violet.
Marc Jacob’s Daisy Dream Sunshine is a great carefree scent for summer days. Launched in January 2019 as a limited edition, this fragrance features a combination of golden raspberries, orange blossoms and solar musk, which collide together in a sparkling cocktail of whimsical happiness.
Stuck at your desk and need to be transported to St Tropez, Portofino or Hawaii? The following fragrances have all been inspired by the feeling of exploration, freedom and azure waters.
The formulation of Creed’s Virgin Island Water was inspired by a sailing trip to the Caribbean – its adventurous and refreshing notes include lime, copra, hibiscus, ylang ylang and ginger. Suitable for both men and women, it really captures the essence of summer and will help you to feel like the sun is shining down on you in a tropical climate!
Moschino Forever Sailing is another ocean favourite – a fragrance designed for men; lemon, grapefruit and ice mint are combined with juniper and patchouli to emphasise fun, excitement and the power of nature.
Wearing a scent that it is evocative of summer can help you get into the holiday spirit.
Heat & rising temperatures can intensify the sense of smell, which is why switching heavier ‘Winter’ scents for lighter ones can help you feel more energetic
Don’t leave your perfume in the sun (or near hot temperatures – this includes your bathroom), as this can shorten the perfume’s lifespan.
Headed to a festival or on a summer vacation which requires travel? Take a look at allbeauty’s range of Travalo Atomisers, perfect for decanting your favourite fragrance from glass bottles and taking with you on the go.

Flowerbomb is one of those fragrances I kept spotting but hadn’t ever tried (I know, pretty shocking when you consider my day job!) Fragrances have a habit of getting into my head and whispering “try me, try me” and Flowerbomb finally did that when I spotted it yet again on our bestseller list – time to get my hands on a sample…
THE MAGICAL POWER OF FLOWERS
Flowerbomb is an explosive floral bouquet. Unexpected. Thousand flowers gives rise to an ultra-feminine, delicious and sensual fragrance. A bouquet of tens of cattleyas, hundreds of sambac jasmine, thousands of freesia, and millions of rose petals enriched by an addictive scent of patchouli and vanilla. This now iconic fragrance was created by the perfumers Olivier Polge, Carlos Benaim and Domitille Berthier
(quote from Viktor & Rolf.com)
According to Viktor & Rolf here are the fragrance notes:
All good so far, but Flowerbomb is classed as an Oriental, Gourmand fragrance – since I tend to prefer scents that are fruity and light (La Petite Robe Noire, Stormflower) I wasn’t over-confident I’d like it. But nose down I headed in…
I’m not sure what I was expecting to be honest. Surely the clue’s in the title (it’s going to be horribly floral!) but the overwhelming sugary sweetness was a huge surprise. Yes the floral notes are there but wow it’s so sweet and sugary!! I’m a fan of Prada Candy and although they’re not the same, there’s a definite hint of Candy’s caramel and vanilla notes.
Orchid, rose and vanillaare the strongest notes for me, but that lovely sugar kick is the most noticeable part of the scent. Flowerbomb is a very lovely perfume and not at all the flowery-maiden-aunt-fragrance I was guessing. It’s not overwhelming either. It is strong on the first spray but has a soft, powdery dry-down (on my skin) which I really loved. It’s also a rather grown-up scent; if you waft past someone wearing this you’ll think it a) cost quite a lot and b) they mean business.
Flowerbomb is a statement perfume, the one I’d wear if I had an interview or important meeting. But it’s also a lovely, soft, feminine scent that I’d wear for lunch with friends. Let’s face it, it’s a multi-tasker and that’s always a winner for me! I wouldn’t shy away from gifting Flowerbomb either though I’d stick to the over 25s.
Keen to try? You can shop Flowerbomb HERE (and it goes without saying it’s a lot less expensive at allbeauty.com!)

Floral Perfume The easiest fragrance to spot! If she loves the smell of roses, freesias, daisies – in fact any florals, then a floral perfume is the one to choose. There are so many options to choose from here, but let’s play it safe and choose scents that will appeal to most. We adore Ghost The Fragrance – in a bottle shaped like the female form, it’s a soft, floral fragrance that any woman will adore. From just £19.95 it’s also very affordable.
Possibly the most famous floral perfume, Jimmy Choo Eau de Toilette (be sure to choose the EDT!) is a massive seller. With a bottle inspired by Murano glass and created by the Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon (you can read our full guide to Jimmy Choo scents here). It’s glam, glam glam! We’ve linked to the 100ml but there are even more savings to be had in smaller sizes, notably the 40ml which makes a fabulous stocking filler.
Oriental Perfume Does she prefer heavier scents? Musky cinnamon, spicy fragrance, warm and sugary scents with vanilla? If the answer is yes, then oriental scents are the ones to choose. A word of warning: unless you’re really sure these are for her, then choose another group. They’ll really be too heavy for anyone not into oriental fragrance. The bestseller in the oriental perfume group is Calvin Klein Euphoria Eau de Parfum.
For something a little different, Laura Biagiotti’s Roma is a very affordable treat. A blend of crisp and fruity resins and evening flowers with base notes of vanilla and musk.
Woody Perfume If she loves a scent with mossy, earthy notes, then a woody fragrance is the one to choose. Think cedarwood, sandalwood and vetiver. Chopard’s The Wish is an immensely popular scent, an elegant, refreshing, woody fragrance that contains a blend of woodsy and spicy florals, with notes of patchouli, incense, sandalwood and amber.
Thierry Mugler’s Alien is a modern woody scent. Jasmine Sambac and a hint of orange blossom combine to give a unique fragrance that’s often described as “sexy, sensual and uplifting”!
Does she love the scent of grass and herbs (think lavender, rosemary, basil and sage)? Then aromatic fragrance is a great one to choose. We love Penhaligon’s Lavandula Eau de Parfum.
For a more affordable option, Burberry Brit Rhythm has top notes of English lavender, with pink pepper, orange blossom and cedar.
Citrus Perfume Does she love the clean, zesty scent of lemon, orange and mandarin? Or maybe she’s not a fragrance fan at all?! Then citrus scents are a great choice! Universally popular, they’re fresh and subtle. Davidoff Cool Water Woman is a very clean fragrance suitable for all, and at very affordable prices. Notes of citrus and pineapple blend with the scent of fresh, ocean air.
Does she love the scent of apples, peaches, blackcurrants – in fact, any fruit? Then a fruity fragrance is for her. We adore Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire (if in doubt, choose the eau de toilette) – we don’t think any woman would be sorry to receive this beauty! With a fruity, blackcurrant scent, this is sophistication in a bottle:
