Korean Beauty

Here at allbeauty, we like to stay ahead of the curve, keeping you up to date with all of the latest trends. In the last few years, one country in particular has been taking the world by storm with their beauty secrets, South Korea.

We love the concept of K-Beauty! It involves assessing your skin’s needs and amending your traditional beauty routine, possibly giving it a major, much-needed shake-up to help it fall in line with the Korean way of beautifying.

In essence, K-Beauty is fully focused on skin health, prioritising protection during the day, and following up with a thorough routine each evening.

Sun Protection

In the UK, we’ve shifted our love of tanning to realising the harmful effects of too much sun, and the K-Beauty concept is the perfect natural progression for beauty-focused folks. Acheiving flawless, youthful skin, free of pigmentation, is the goal of Korean skincare, which is why sun protection is so important.

The majority of Korean women don’t leave the house without applying an SPF cream, even if they’re spending all day in an office. In fact, many women will wear both an SPF specific skincare product, as well as additional SPF infusion in their makeup. Better to be safe than sorry, right?

The K-Beauty Routine

We admire how K-Beauty focuses on skin health to such an extent that the need to follow up with additional cosmetic products is minimal. K-Beauty creates the perfect flawless canvas, with or without makeup.

The K-Beauty skincare method is tailored to your individual skincare needs, this could mean up to ten steps of beauty magic – it all depends on what you’re starting with.

The core skincare routine is completed in the evening, with a paired back version used in the morning. Here’s the run down:

Step 1: Cleanser

For morning cleansing, use water to remove any impurities on the skin and give the skin a hydration boost.  In the evening, opt for an oil-based cleanser to ensure you remove all traces of makeup and SPF from your face.

Step 2: Cleanse again

Follow up your oil cleanser with something water-based to remove any remaining residue and impurities.

Step 3: Exfoliate

Once or twice a week, buff off any dead skin cells with a gentle enzyme exfoliator. This will prevent pores from clogging and ensure your products get maximum absorption.

Step 4: Essence

A sort of hybrid product that falls somewhere between a serum and a toner, essence hydrates your complexion and encourages healthy skin at a cellular level.

Step 5: Ampoule

Ampoule is another product which has similar properties to serum, but it usually contains an even higher concentration of active ingredients. Choose one that best suits your personal skin complaints.

Step 6: Serum

Use a targetted serum on the areas of your face that need a pick-me-up. From dark spots to fine lines, serum plays an important role in reversing any signs of damage.

Step 7: Sheet mask

Sheet masks are hugely popular in Korea and are a regular part of the nightly skincare routine. Perfect for all skin types, everyone can enjoy the convenience and skin-nourishing benefits of a sheet mask treatment.

Step 8: Eye cream

After letting your skin absorb the ingredients of the sheet mask, smooth an eye cream around the brow and socket, moving from the inner to the outer corner of the eye. This area is not only delicate, but prone to dryness, so hydration is incredibly important.

Step 9: Moisturiser

At the end of your routine, finish with a day or night moisturiser to lock in all those beneficial skin-loving ingredients.

Step 10: Sunscreen

The final step in K-Beauty skincare is a layer of sunscreen, year-round. This wouldn’t take place during the nighttime routine, will always, always, always, be part of the morning routine.korean beauty glossary

K-Beauty Favourites

While the main focus of K-Beauty is the in-depth skincare regime, the products which are used also play a key role. Korean women have access to an enviable range of skincare products, many of which aren’t imported to our side of the pond. However, at allbeauty, we have curated a collection of finds to cover all your beauty needs, so you can fully immerse yourself in K-Beauty without having to step foot out of your home.

Seoulista is a revolutionary brand that packs a wealth of skin benefits into one convenient sachet. Bathroom space is at a premium in many Korean homes, so these no mess, no fuss sachets offer an easy way to get spa-style results in your own home.

Hangover Hydration Help

Those boozy nights out wreak havoc on our skin, in more ways than one. If you want your skin to be fighting fit this party season, allbeauty are on hand to help. We’ve created a handy six step process for reversing the effects of the night before; so those late nights don’t need to catch up with you.

Step 1 – Wipe the slate clean.

After you’ve woken up and checked your text messages through bleary eyes, the most important thing you can do is clean your face. If you managed to reach for the make up wipes last night, congratulations are in order, but it’s still worth making sure that you refresh your skin and start the day right.

Foundation and sweat are terrible for clogging pores and encouraging breakouts, so rinse away any trace of the night before with a good cleanser. Our favourites are the shea butter infused Pro-Radiance Cream Cleanser and the more exfoliating Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Wash, both by Elemis.

Step 2 – Rehydrate.

Dehydrated skin is unhappy skin. Those fine lines, enlarged pores and sallow complexion that you see in the mirror after a night out are all caused by dehydration. Start the day by replenishing your skin from all angles. Drink plenty of water, and treat your skin to some extra hydration with a product that contains hyaluronic acid. This moisture magnet holds 1000 times its weight in water, so it’s a powerful tool when it comes to skincare.

The 3-Pack Instant Facial Masks by Seoulista Beauty are great for those mornings when you want a low-effort, high-impact product, while The Organic Pharmacy 30ml Hyaluronic Acid Serum can be slathering straight on.

Top tip: Store either product in your refrigerator for an additional cooling effect.

Step 3 – Get your blood pumping.

Stimulating blood flow is great for dehydrated skin as it helps to reduce puffy skin and reduce dark circles. You could go for a brisk run in the crisp morning air, but personally we prefer something a little less intensive. Skincare products formulated with caffeine provide the same effect, so pour yourself a tea or coffee and enjoy the rejuvenating effects of Clinique Superdefense Eye Cream.

Step 4 – Wake up those muscles.

Believe it or not, there are 43 muscles in the face, many of which will be feeling a little out of shape after a late night of drinking. You can help to stimulate circulation and increase skin brightness by taking your time to massage your creams and serums into the skin, focusing on all areas of the face.

An alternative option if you’re short on time is to use a face cream that includes niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B which has been shown to reduce redness. This Water Drench Cream by Peter Thomas Roth is a firm favourite.

Step 5 – Check in on your skin.

Throughout the day your skin can grow fatigued and lose its brightness, particularly if you’re working in an environment with air pollutants, such as in the city. For an afternoon pick-me-up, the Caudalie Beauty Elixir is a handbag must-have. Acclaimed as a travel essential for busy jetsetters, this plant-based facial mist gives you an immediate boost of radiance, tightening pores and smoothing lines, wherever you are.

Step 6 – Rest and repeat.

You’ve made it! Top up the water bottle, get your pyjamas on, and settle down to a rom-com and some well-deserved chocolate snacks (choose dark chocolate for bonus antioxidants and brownie points).

Summer Sunshine Safety

Summer’s not over just yet- there’s still time to have fun in the sun and soak up the rays.  We want to make the most of every moment in the sunshine (as it doesn’t come around very often!) and we don’t want to be hiding away; let’s be safe and not sorry. You may associate SPF (Sun Protection Factor) with sun prevention products to use whilst you’re chilling by the pool or beach, however it is an acronym that is appearing increasingly on skincare bottles and vials for everyday use.  So whether you’re planning on a summer mini break to the city, packing your bags for a long haul vacation, or simply planning to spend more time outdoors in your garden soaking up the summer sun, read on to find out more about why you should consider using SPF products in your skincare routine.

Here comes the sun…

SPF comes in different factors, ranging from 2 – 50+. According to the NHS, Sun creams and lotions should be at least SPF15, however, factors 30-50 are most effective when it comes to preventing your skin from over exposure to UVA & B rays. It is possible to experience skin damage on a cloudy or overcast day, so it is important to make sure your skin is protected when you are spending long periods of time outdoors.

What is the difference between UVA and B rays?

UV B rays are responsible for causing sunburn. Whilst sunburn can be soothed with after sun products, it’s crucial to note that UVA rays can also cause irreversible skin damage in the long term as they can penetrate through several layers of the skin, causing sun spots, signs of aging and elevating the risk of skin cancer. SPF specifically relates to prevention against UV B rays

How can I incorporate SPF products into my skincare routine?

If you’re a city dweller, Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart Hydrating Shield SPF50 is a moisturising lotion which can be used as the last step in your skincare regimen to strengthen and protect skin. It offers tinted protection against UV rays, meaning that it can also be used in place of foundation. The Prevage range is especially designed to prevent ageing and also fights against environmental stresses, such as pollution, making it ideal for those with a commute.

Fans of French Brand Caudalie will be familiar with the brand’s exciting origins from the vineyards of Bordeaux. But did you know that their famous grape vines can be combined with SPF? Caudalie’s Anti-Wrinkle Face Suncare has SPF50 incorporated within its formula containing organic grape water and antioxidants. Formulated without traces of oxybenzone or octinoxate, this product is a great addition to skincare routines for fans of natural beauty & ocean swimming as it is free of chemicals suspected to cause damage to the marine ecosystem (coral reefs included).  Bonus – as well as being lightweight, the product is delightfully fragranced with notes of Frangipani flowers in addition to providing SPF protection. Apply generously to the face before exposure to the sun – avoiding the eye contour. Shop Caudalie’s Whole Suncare Range here.

Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protection Cream Plus SPF50 for Face & Body 50ml can be used as a base for your foundation and should be applied daily after your usual skincare routine. We love that this cream is for Face and Body – it can be applied to the neck and décolletage to protect against ageing and damage in these oft-neglected areas!  Shop now for £23.50- saving 31% off RRP.

allbeauty’s Sun Protection FABULOUS tips

Pay attention to expiry dates, replenishing products that have expired to ensure that you are maximising their effectiveness and making the most of your skincare routine.

Re-apply SPF products frequently throughout the day (before heading out on your lunch break, after swimming, half an hour before gardening) to ensure that you are always protected from over exposure! The NHS recommend that you apply SPF products half an hour before being outside for extended periods, as well as immediately before you go out.  Our Lancaster Sun Beauty Velvet Touch Face Cream SPF30 50ml + Free Gift is perfect protection at just £14.

Fan of acids and toners? When these are used in your skincare routine, your skin can be more sensitive to sunlight, which is why you should always consider using SPF skincare products to help protect against sensitivity.

The one word we don’t like: Sunburn

We don’t welcome sunburn but sometimes it arrives unexpectedly. What to do when it all goes wrong? We believe that the best way to combat sunburn is through prevention but you need to know what to do if you find your skin irritated and an unfortunate shade of lobster. If you experience burnt skin as a result of overexposure, it is important to treat this as quickly as possible – make sure you also drink water to prevent dehydration and always consult a doctor if you experience severe signs of sunburn.  Our two favourite picks:

Moisturisers and balms containing aloe vera, such as Clinique After Sun Rescue Balm with Aloe, can help to soothe and cool irritated areas of skin, 150ml for just £19. Lierac Sunissme SOS Repairing Serum,  contains witch hazel and omega 3 and 9s can help repair skin from intense exposure from the sun helping to refresh, soothe and prolong tanning results, 30ml for £21.95 saving 51% off RRP

allbeauty has a range of products which can be used to soothe sunburn or to maximise your tan. We recommend that you always apply moisturiser after exposure to the sun – but remember, when it comes to sunburn, prevention is better than a cure!
