Cancelled Beauty Appointment?

With everything going on in the world, many of us have ditched the coiffed hair and perfectly manicured nails in favour of a more low maintenance routine. Realistically, the choice isn’t entirely ours anyway, as getting out to a beauty appointment isn’t something that will be on the cards any time soon.

Whether you’re naturally low maintenance at the best of times, or this is a new development for you, we’ve got everything you need to embrace the lazier days and manage isolation with ease. After all, if you can’t be lazy now, when can you be?!

Fixing Your Roots

If you’ve never missed an appointment with your colourist, you might be worrying about just what’s hiding underneath your dyed locks. The good news is, colouring your roots at home is super easy. You might not get quite the same finish as a professional, but it’s the next best thing. Of course, you could always just embrace the grey, it’s very on-trend now don’t you know!

Party Lashes

For those with lash extensions, there’s no way around it – you’ll have to prepare to look a little patchy over the next few weeks. But help is at hand! While we can’t help with infills, we can offer the next best thing. If you love the way that long fluttering lashes look on you, we stock a fabulous range of false lashes and lengthening mascaras, so you don’t have to go without. You might also want to try a lash treatment, giving you a little extra boost to accentuate your natural assets.

Fall Back In Love With Your Natural Nails

We love a good gel polish as much as the next woman, but unless you’re kitted out with a UV lamp at home, that’s not on the cards. Instead, why not embrace your natural nails by treating them to a protective, nourishing treatment. Follow up with a coat of a light, subtle shade of polish from Dior or Givenchy to finish the look. With a little bit of TLC, you may just be surprised at how great your nails are au natural.

Get Your Brows Ready

When you wake up knowing you won’t be leaving the house, do you really want to spend time drawing on the perfect brow? We didn’t think so. Ditch the brow pencils for now and instead simplify your beauty routine by tweezing out stray hairs as needed and perhaps following with brow wax for a little extra control. You might even surprise yourself with the results!

Your Hair Removal Method

Let’s face it, your social calendar is depressingly empty for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean you have to embrace the fuzz (unless you want to of course!). Hot wax is out, back-to-basics is in. Go for the quick and easy option with a quality ladies shaver, a smoother finish with an epilator, or go for the longer lasting option with an IPL hair removal system. For the best results, follow with a growth inhibiting product designed to slow regrowth.

Get The Glow

Tanning beds and professional sprays are out, low-maintenance glow is in. We might be spending less time indoors, but that doesn’t mean you have to forego the bronzed look. With a range of instant and gradual self-tanning solutions, you can achieve that sun-kissed glow without leaving the house! And if you find yourself looking washed out on those Zoom conference calls, a facial tanner or touch of bronzer can make the world of difference.

We hope you’ll agree, not being able to leave the house doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy looking great, without having to put in too much effort. Of course, the lowest maintenance option of all is to forego your beauty regime altogether, but what fun is that?!

How To Tips From Chris

About Chris

Chris Pearson, one of our senior stylists, has been in the hairdressing industry for over 35 years. Some of his career highlights have included working with Vidal Sasoon as well as an array of other talented stylists. His work has even been on the cover of Hairdressers’ Journal. He has been a long standing member of the allbeauty team specialising in colour techniques and cutting. As a keen surfer and paddle boarder, Chris is often out on the water. With the recent corona outbreak, he has been finding this a great way to social distance whilst unwinding and relaxing but is always thinking of his skincare/ haircare at the same time.

If you are leaving the house as part of essential exercise, or maximising the opportunity of being able to take lunch breaks in the garden, Chris recommends a high SPF to protect your skin. Caudalie SPF 50 High Protection Anti Wrinkle Face care is a fantastic product that boosts an ocean protect label as it has no nasty parabens or preservatives such as oxybenzone or Octinoxate that damage our skin and our oceans.

For exposure to seawater and salt air, Chris makes sure to use a leave in conditioner to protect his curls. Kérastase Discipline leave in spray conditioner is one of his top recommendations for unruly hair! When home he recommends a good smoothing shampoo followed by a mask to nourish his  locks (especially after having been in the sea)

1) Kérastase Discipline Bain Fluidealiste Smooth- In-Motion Shampoo

2) Kérastase Maskeratine Smooth-In-Motion Masque

3) Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curling Gel soufflé

4) To style and hold the curls use Redken Ringlet Shape Perfecting Lotion

How To Tips From Georgia

About Georgia

I’ve been a beauty therapist for 22 years. After training in Chichester, I moved along the coast to Brighton and ran a salon there for over 10 years. I moved back to Guernsey 12 years ago and after having some time out to have a family, I started working for allbeauty. I’ve been with the company for 7 years and work as a therapist as well as managing the salon. I feel my experience with clients over the years of being a therapist has helped me to manage the salon effectively and it’s something I really enjoy doing. I specialise in threading and facial treatments in particular, Guinot Hydradermie.

Home Manicure

Our poor hands have suffered so much recently with all of the extra hand washing, so it’s so important to keep applying hand cream to stop them cracking and drying out.

A great little trick to do at home is the equivalent of a deluxe manicure that we would do in the salon.

You will need:

1) Two small hand towels

2) Cling film

3) Cuticle oil or equivalent

4) Small microwaveable pot

5) Rich hand cream

6) Hot water bottle

7) Nail varnish remover

8) Strengthening/repairing base coat

Morrocanoil Body Oil is great for this, but alternatively, if you don’t have a cuticle oil you could use olive oil, almond oil or even baby oil!

For the hand cream, my personal recommendations would be Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream, or for extra dry hands, L’Occitane Extensive Hand Balm.

1) Very carefully heat the oil in a small pot in the microwave

2) Apply a thin layer to each cuticle and the fingers and then apply the hand cream all over the front and backs of the hands

3) Wrap each hand in cling film

4) Then place the other towel over the top

5) The hot water bottle can then be placed over the top of the hands. This step really helps warm the hands and opens the pores so the products can start to work

6) Leave this on for 10 minutes

7) Carefully remove the cling film and then massage any remaining oil and hand cream into the skin

8) Remove any residue cream/oil from the nails with a nail varnish remover

There you have it – a deluxe manicure to keep you going whilst away from the salon!

Rest and Relaxation Spa Time

So now we have no excuse not to do that home body care that we are always putting off due to a lack of time! From running around between work and children’s activities, making dinners, doing the housework and having to think of great school lunch box ideas late at night, I for one will be making the most of a moment to myself!

So light some candles, run yourself a lovely deep bath and add some Dead Sea salts, Epsom salts, pink Himalayan salts or whatever you have in your bathroom. For an extra touch, you can also add to this some aromatherapy oils such as Lavender, Geranium, Rosemary or Sandalwood.

Before you get in, try some dry body brushing in upwards strokes to stimulate blood supply and to help with lymphatic drainage. Next use a body exfoliator on dry skin before getting into the bath. You get a much better exfoliation if your skin is dry, as not so much of the exfoliator dissolves. I recommend the Guinot Paris Gommage Facile body scrub or Decléor’s Green Mandarin scrub masque.  You can add a little body oil to it so you get a better sliding motion and to make sure it doesn’t scratch the skin. By now, your skin should be feeling tingly and there will be a slight erythema – that’s redness of the skin!

Time to gently get into the bath and have that well deserved soak. And breathe!!!!

If you can, stay in there for about 15/20 mins to really let the Dead Sea salts activate and help you relax.

When getting out of the bath, be very careful not to slip, as you have used oils.

Now gently pat your skin dry and apply your favourite body lotion, soufflé, body butter or oil. See some of my personal favourites below :

1. Caudalie Divine Oil2.L’Occitane Almond Oil3.Shu Uemura Camellia Universal Balm for hair and body4.Guinot body moisturiser5.Moroccanoil Body Soufflé

What is an extra luxurious touch – and so good for your skin – is to apply a thin layer of body oil first, let it absorb slightly and then apply your moisturiser over the top. Don’t forget feet, ankles, and knees as they all need to be included in this nourishing ritual.
If you don’t have a bath you can do exactly the same as above, but then get into a lovely warm shower instead!

You will come out feeling energised and your skin will feel fabulous.

If you are finding it hard to sleep at the moment, then this is a great routine to do before bed to help you relax and sleep – but definitely make sure you use calming products like Lavender or Chamomile!

How To Tips From Anya

About Anya

Anya Goy is a professional senior hair stylist at allbeauty’s Guernsey salon. She is also owner of RainbowHairColour.com & author of: “Any Colour of the Rainbow – Guide to Alternative Hair Colour”. A TikTok guru, here are Anya’s top hair tip do’s and don’ts during lockdown.

Hair at home

Don’t try to cut your own hair. I know the salons are closed, but it’s not forever. A hair disaster on top of the uncertainty of these times probably won’t help.

Do take the time to plan your next style, use your free time to Pinterest some looks together to show your hairdresser when they reopen. There are some fun phone apps you can play with to try different looks and styles on yourself. This could be a good opportunity to reinvent yourself and plan for a new look. As your hair will be longer than usual, there will be more for your hairdresser to play with.

Don’t touch the permanent box dye or bleach! Unless you have the funds for a big colour correction when the salon is back open, this is not a good idea. If you get the urge to, try go watch some Brad Mondo “Hairdresser reacts to hair fails” on Youtube instead.

Do use temporary wash out root touch-up sprays to conceal the grays before your grocery run. If you’re a blonde who can’t get a salon toner top up, try Kérastase Blond Absolu Masque Ultra Violet Treatment instead. This will help cool off the brass and keep the condition feeling beautiful.

Don’t heat style your hair. This is the perfect opportunity to give your hair a heat holiday. Put the straighteners down and air dry if possible. You’ll be amazed how good your hair feels even after just 2 weeks without regular heat.

Do try some new styles! With more free time on your hands this is a great opportunity to learn a new skill like learning different braid techniques, or cute simple day to day looks, how to do thos festival styles… or if you want a challenge try some formal event upstyles. Youtube has some wonderful free tutorials. I personally love to watch Kayley Melissa’s channel for tons of great ideas and easy to try tutorials. I would recommend MOROCCANOIL Styling Luminous Hairspray to help give your hair some hold and make practicing these looks easier.

Don’t neglect yourself. It can be easy to feel anxious or depressed with a bad situation and to stop caring for yourself. In lockdown, no one will see you anyway right? But it’s actually more important than ever to take time and practice self care and look after your mental wellbeing. And have fun with those new styles, as above.

Do pamper yourself! Treat yourself to an at home spa day. Take a nice long bath, and do a hair and face mask. Light some candles and let the worries slip away. For your hair treatment I would recommend Kérastase Resistance Masque Extentioniste

This mask has the key ingredient “Maleic Acid”, which is also the same key ingredient that is used in L’oreal Smart Bond systems, so has the same added benefit and balances out the PH levels in your hair and scalp. After cleansing, tower-dry hair. Use a hazelnut-sized amount and apply to hair length. Leave in for a minimum of 5 minutes, but I like to leave it for a good hour myself! Then rinse only!

How To Tips From Courtney

About Courtney

I started at allbeauty’s Guernsey salon 3 and a half years ago and I will become a qualified hairdresser this summer. My areas of interest as a hairdresser are interacting with clients and helping them achieve their desired look. I particularly enjoy working with colours and doing big colour changes. I also like doing hair updos for weddings and occasions and I was proud to be placed first in the Guernsey College of Further Education hair show 2019.

Detangling Your Hair

A lovely product from Shu Uemura, Art of Hair is the Create and Perfect Wonder Worker. Wonder Worker is the perfect product to help detangle hair, whilst helping with frizz and hydration. It boosts radiance and also adds silkiness to the hair. This product is perfect for when you’ve just washed your hair. Spray to your mid-lengths to get the perfect blow dry without any tangles!

Dealing With Stressed Hair

If you are struggling with distressed hair or hair prone to fall out, maybe due to stress, diet, medication, emotions or anything that makes you feel anxious, then my top recommendation is the Genesis Range from Kérastase. Fans of Kérastase will know that the brand offers targeted solutions for different hair types and the new range from Genesis does not disappoint. There are two types of shampoos in the Genesis range;  Kérastase Genesis Bain Nutri-Fortifiant, which is specifically targeted for dry hair needing extra nutrition and Kérastase Genesis Bain Hydra-Fortifiant, for normal hair. In the range you also have a beautiful blow dry spray which you spray into your mid-lengths to end after shampooing your hair with the Genesis Shampoo, Conditioner or Masque: this blow dry spray protects the hair up to 230 degrees heat which is perfect for the people who use daily heat on the hair for example (straighteners, curlers and blow drying)! This product also helps to detangle the hair to prevent further hair fall and has 24 hours protection against frizz.

Looking for a long term at home solution?

Kérastase Genesis Ampoules Cure Fortifantes Anti-Chute are specially designed as a six week care programme that you can undertake yourself. The product contains 10 x 6ml ampoules* of serum, designed for use daily over a six week period. Use after washing your hair with other products from the Genesis range for best results. Use once daily in the morning or before going to bed during a 6 week period. Break off the top of the ampoule to reveal the silicone applicator. Apply to the scalp, section by section, simultaneously pressing the button at the bottom of the ampoule. Do not rinse. *An ampoule is a small sealed capsule containing a liquid, offering the perfect amount of concentrated solution.

Maintenance for Blondes

Redken Colour Extend Blondage is a perfect Shampoo and Conditioner for blondes – and, as a bonus, is also available in a 1000ml supersize. Say goodbye to your brassy unwanted yellow/orange locks and say hello to shiny blonder hair. This shampoo has a beautiful violet pigment which will help take control of your blonde hair. It will help neutralise and reduce brassiness and also strengthen the hairs cuticle for less breakage with a triple acid protein complex. I would recommend using the Redken Colour Extend Blondage shampoo and conditioner twice a week depending on how many times a week you wash your hair but will also depend on the amount of toning you would want. This is the perfect Shampoo and Conditioner for you perfect blondes. Wearing suitable gloves, apply the shampoo on to wet hair and lather up and rinse well. Repeat as necessary, for maximum benefits leave the second lather of shampoo on the hair for approximately 3-5 minutes for amazing results and then rinse off. After shampooing, apply the conditioner and leave on, also for 3-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Nourkrin: Meet the Brand

How long has Nourkrin been around?

Nourkrin® has been on the market in the UK for around 30 years. It was the first natural hair growth product available in the UK and has been the market leader ever since. Nourkrin® is now a global name and is available throughout the world where, in many countries, it is actually prescribed by healthcare practitioners to those suffering from hair thinning or hair loss.

Throughout all this time, we have continued to invest heavily in research into both the products and hair growth disorders, and have more than 55 published clinical papers looking at hair growth disorders of various causes and types and how Nourkrin® can help to rebalance a disrupted Hair Growth Cycle and promote new growth.

What are hair growth vitamins?

Hair growth vitamin is a catch-all term for what are usually generic vitamin blends, sold as ‘hair, skin and nails’ preparations and which contain biotin among the list of ingredients.

However, research shows that in the western world, due to our varied diet,  vitamin deficiency only accounts for around 2% of hair loss cases. Therefore, dealing with hair loss usually requires more than just a vitamin preparation, and needs something which actively addresses the effects of the hair growth disruption – the root cause of all types of hair loss.

Proteoglycans are the molecules within all our bodies which, among other things, govern our Hair Growth Cycle. The one thing that all cases of hair loss have in common, is that these proteoglycan molecules are missing from their usual place in the hair follicle, and this leaves the follicle unable to function normally. This means that after shedding the hair, as part of the usual function of the follicle, the follicles fall dormant. As this can happen across the whole of the scalp, the effect of many dormant follicles manifests as a general thinning of the hair, usually preceded by an increase in shedding.

By supplementing with a product which contains the same proteoglycans which are found in the follicle, rather than a simple multivitamin, the Hair Growth Cycle can be rebalanced, reawakening dormant follicles and new growth can be restored.

Who are Nourkrin’s products for?

Nourkrin® is suitable for men and women who are suffering from hair thinning or hair loss, or those who wish to support and protect the health of their hair. Nourkrin® is not suitable for those who suffer from a fish allergy as the active ingredient in the tablets, Marilex®, is derived from fish.

Why is Nourkrin Unique? / What it Marilex? (How does it work)?

Nourkrin® is the only product to contain Marilex®, which contains high levels of the specific proteoglycans, and in the precise ratios and quantities, which regulate hair follicle functioning. Marilex® has been clinically proven to help induce and prolong the growth phase of the Hair Growth Cycle.

The proteoglycans in Nourkrin® help to induce dormant hair follicles back into the growth phase of the Hair Growth Cycle and also helps to elongate the growth (Anagen) phase back to a natural, healthy length (usually around 3-5 years) to ensure that each hair reaches its full growth potential before entering the transition (Catagen) phase.

By encouraging more hair follicles to re-enter the growth phase, the resting phase is pushed back to normal levels, resulting in a reduction in the levels of shedding; the combination of these two elements promotes continuous, healthy hair growth.

All ingredients in Nourkrin® are naturally based and 100% drug-free and have been tested for efficacy and safety.

If I begin taking supplements for my hair, how long should I wait to see results?

As hair is so slow-growing (think how long it took to grow out that haircut that you hated!) it can take several months before the results can become visible, in the same way, that it took several months for the effects of the hair growth disruption to show themselves. On average, most people will start to see some improvement in their hair, such as a reduction in the levels of shedding, by around 3-4 months although this can vary from person to person depending on the duration and severity of the problem.

For this reason, we always recommend a minimum programme of 6 months of Nourkrin®, as each follicle is in its own growth cycle and it can take some time for the benefits of the programme to be realised across the 100,000 follicles present on our heads.

Can supplements help my hair regrow?

By supplementing with a product which contains proteoglycans in the same ratios and quantities as found in the follicle, it is possible to help hair regrow, although there are a couple of exceptions to this. Conditions such as cicatricial alopecia (where there is permanent damage to the follicle), alopecia totalis (complete scalp hair loss) and alopecia universalis (total hair loss) are usually permanent due to the factors that cause them, however, most other types of hair loss can be helped by Nourkrin®.

I have pretty normal hair – will supplements do anything ‘extra’ for me, such as making my hair grow faster?

Your hair is only capable of growing at a certain rate (usually around ¼ to ½ inch a month), regardless of whether or not you support with supplementation, so it’s not possible to speed up growth beyond this rate. However, even for those who are not experiencing hair growth disorders, supplements can help to support their hair and improve the quality and health of the growth.

For those of us who are aware that the health of our hair is at risk, maybe as the result of a stressful period we’re going through, or because of hormonal changes or a recent illness, supplementation can help to protect the health of the follicle and existing growth and help to prevent hair growth disruption occurring.

Can my diet cause thinning hair?

Extreme dietary restriction following bariatric surgery, disordered eating conditions or even certain health conditions such as coeliac disease can cause hair growth disruptions due to the poor absorption of the nutrients from food through the gut. However, outside of this, it is unlikely that diet is to blame for your hair loss. In the modern western world, we are fortunate that our diet is typically healthy and sufficient in the protein, vitamins and minerals needed to keep our hair healthy. Hair loss as a result of a vitamin deficiency only accounts for around 2% of cases and it is far more likely for more common conditions such as stress, hormonal changes or even over-styling to be the cause of the hair loss instead.

That being said, hair does need certain nutrients to grow healthily, including protein, glucose and vitamins and, as hair consists of around 85-90% protein, making sure that you eat a varied diet which is rich in protein can help to keep your hair looking its best.

What has been the highlight of the Nourkrin® story so far?

Nourkrin® are incredibly proud to have been instrumental in helping to improve the life quality of countless women and men over the last three decades, not only in terms of the health and quality of their hair but also, equally importantly, in terms of their confidence, self-esteem and quality of life.

We’ve been awarded not one, but an unprecedented two gold medals by the hair loss experts at the World Trichology Society, for our continuous and ongoing research and development into improving the life quality of women and men suffering from hair growth disorders. In addition to this, we’re also the proud recipients of numerous consumer awards voted for by Nourkrin users, and trade awards.

What’s your number one tip for choosing or using haircare supplements?

Give them time to work! If you’re trying to redress a hair growth disorder it takes time… several months in fact. The effects of a hair growth disruption usually start to appear around 4-16 weeks after the triggering event and it can take at least this long again to start to see the visible results of a supplementation programme, which is why we recommend a minimum programme of 6 months. If the cause of your hair loss is more permanent, such as, in the case of certain health conditions or medications, then you may also need to consider a longer-term plan with your hair growth supplement, to help protect the health of the follicles and hair and maintain healthy hair growth against the effects of the trigger.

Whether you’re choosing a hair supplement to help support your hair in the face of an ongoing disrupting factor, or to help to promote growth after a period of acute hair loss, consistency is also key – remembering to take the supplement as directed on the pack and at the same or similar time every day is vital to get the best possible results from the programme.

Monday: Start the Week Hydrated

Eugh, Mondays. The weekend is officially over and its straight back to the daily grind. Do yourself a favour and make Monday the day you really focus on hydrating yourself.

Too many of us dip in and out of dehydration simply because we forget to sip on a bottle of water throughout the day. Well, no more! Starting with just one day a week, focus on getting enough water into your system, the rest will follow.

For bonus points, throughout the day give your face a spritz with Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Hydrating Mist to hydrate from the outside-in.

Once a week, make skincare your priority and take the time to give yourself a quality facial. Cleanse as normal, then use an appropriate exfoliator to remove any dead cells and dirt, before applying a moisturising face mask. Your skin will thank you!

Thursday: Early To Bed, Early to Rise

We know it’s not the most glamorous form of self-care, but getting an early night can make a world of difference to your energy levels, mood and general sense of wellbeing. At least once a week, try to climb into bed an hour earlier than usual. In general, we need around 8 hours of sleep a night, but another few hours will only do you good!

Changing your sleep habits can be difficult, so if you find yourself wide-eyed and staring at the ceiling, try creating an environment more conducive to sleep. Settling down with a good book can tip the scales toward sleep, and relaxing scents can also help lull you off to the land of nod.

Friday: Soak Up The Weekend

Ooooh yeah! Do you have that weekend feeling yet? Will it be a spot of gardening, catching up with friends online or enjoying lazy mornings with the paper? Well, there’s no better way to say farewell to the working week than by washing your stress away with a good long soak in the tub. Nothing is quite as relaxing as submerging yourself into a hot bath. Nothing, that is, except for submerging yourself into a hot bath that has added sumptuousness.

Get all sudsy with one of our foamy bath soaks, unwind aching muscles with a fragrant bath oil, or feel the fizz with one of the gorgeous range of Bomb Cosmetics bath bombs. Additional fizz in the form of a glass of wine optional, but always recommended. It’s officially the weekend, after all.

Stop! Did You Wash Your Hands?

It’s never been more important to wash your hands properly. Are you doing it right?

We all know how to wash our hands, right? Well, it turns out the majority of us actually haven’t been doing it properly (me included, this is a judgment-free zone). To make sure we’re all doing everything we can to protect those who need it most, here’s the low-down on proper hand-washing, including a few tips to make the whole thing a little more enjoyable.

The Equipment

To properly wash your hands, you need warm water, soap, and something to dry them afterwards. Simple enough? Well, these three little things can make all the difference to handwashing technique, especially if you’re getting one of them wrong.

Many of us are guilty of not letting the water warm up enough before handwashing, and to adequately clean our hands, the temperature needs to be at least 38℃. Now, we’re not expecting everyone to start whipping out their thermometers, so to give you an idea of what 38℃ feels like, it should be warmer than body temperature. Think about how warm someone with a fever feels to the touch, that’s how warm the water should be, at least

Water alone isn’t enough to prevent viruses from spreading, which is where hand soap comes in, but here’s the thing… any soap will do, it doesn’t need to be anti-bacterial. Why? Well, antibacterial soaps are designed to kill bacteria, not viruses. The weakest part of a virus is its lipid bilayer, which is a fatty membrane that holds all the other bits together. Regular soap dissolves the fatty lipid layer, and so the virus essentially collapses and gets washed down the drain. So, by all means, use antibacterial soap if you want to, but it isn’t at all necessary for virus prevention. You can also choose between soap bars and liquid soap, but liquid soap does slightly reduce the risk of recontamination.

That being said, we’re all going to be doing a lot of handwashing over the next few months, so quality does count. Choose a soap that moisturises while it cleans, and look for scents that will make you actually look forward to washing your hands. Our current favourites are the new Neom Organics Scent To Make You Happy and L’Occitane Shea Butter Lavender Liquid Soap.

Hand Towel

Ideally, we’d all have a handy dryer to blast water off our hands, but the next best thing is a clean dry cloth. This should be changed out for a clean one daily, but if you have multiple people living at home or find the cloth is getting damp, change it more regularly. It’s also worth noting that anyone in the house who is in isolation should be using their own hand towel if a second bathroom isn’t available.

And don’t forget…

All that washing will be making your skin more likely to dry out. Replenish your skin’s moisture barrier by following up with a quality hand lotion. We love Molton Brown and Neal’s Yard Remedies, and in particular the Molton Brown Mulberry and Thyme Hand Lotion.

The Technique

Cleaning your hands is all about having the right technique, ensuring that any bacteria or viruses are removed from your skin. Here’s the step-by-step process:

Step 1. Wet hands with water and apply enough soap to cover hands (usually around two pumps).

Step 2. Rub palms together to lather.

Step 3. Rub back of each hand with your palm, interlacing fingers.

Step 4. Rub palm to palm again, this time interlacing fingers.

Step 5. Rub back of fingers to opposing palms, interlocking fingers.

Step 6. Rub each thumb by twisting it in the opposing fist.

Step 7. Rubs tips of fingers in the opposing palm.

Step 8. Rub each wrist with the opposite hand.

Step 9. Rinse.

Step 10. Turn off the tap with your elbow.

Step 11. Dry hands thoroughly.

The whole process should take at least 20 seconds when done correctly. Children are being taught to sing “Happy Birthday” twice through while hand washing, but here are a few suggestions you might prefer to try:

Dolly Parton – Jolene

“Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/ I’m begging of you please don’t take my man/ Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/ Please don’t take him just because you can”.

Culture Club – Karma Chameleon

“Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon/ You come and go, you come and go/ Loving would be easy if your colours were like my dreams/ Red, gold and green, red, gold and green”.

Toto – Africa

“It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you/ There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do/ I bless the rains down in Africa/ Gonna take some time to do the things we never had”.

Or, if you’d like to sing something a little more on-the-nose, go with one of these classics:

• Police – Don’t Stand So Close To Me

• Britney Spears – Toxic

• Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive

• MC Hammer – U Can’t Touch This

Along with social distancing, washing your hands is the best way to keep yourself, and everyone around you, safe right now. Be vigilant and stay positive, folks. Shop all of our essentials here.

What To Do When You Can’t Go Out

In these “uncertain times”, many of us are going to find staying-in our new normal. For some, this will mean uninterrupted boxsets and taking the odd conference call in our pyjamas, for others, it will involve wrangling kids and moody teenagers who have severe cases of cabin-fever – some days, it may be a combination of all of the above. But whatever “isolation” looks like for you, it doesn’t have to be a total downer.

If you look hard enough, you might just find a silver lining to this whole terrible business; time spent at home can give you the opportunity to do those things you haven’t found the time to get around to. And while we can’t give you any advice on gardening or redecorating, we can share some health and beauty products that might just take the edge off a long day.

Put Your Feet Up With A Foot Peel

If you haven’t tried one of these bad boys yet, let me tell you… there is nothing more satisfying than a good foot peel. Usually, the downside is that you have to plan it just right because your feet start peeling ‘at some point’ during the week after your treatment. Swimming pools? Out. Sandals? Out. You’ll be wanting to keep all eyes away from your feet until the dust has well and truly settled, so to speak.

Of course, this makes it the perfect treatment to do when you’re guaranteed not to be leaving the house for a lengthy period. And as a bonus, it doubles as entertainment if you’re a “peeler” (think, PVA glue on your hand at school) – you’re welcome.

Fight The Inevitable Wrinkles

Whether it’s the pressures of working from home, the overarching worry about loved ones or the incessant declarations of “I’m bored” from a child who will. not. leave. you. alone – we’re all likely to gain a few fine lines over the coming weeks. As luck would have it, we’ve got just the thing for that!

From Philosophy, The Microdelivery Resurfacing Peel is a two-step peel that uses resurfacing crystals to buff away the outermost layer of dull skin, and a combination of lactic and salicylic acid to exfoliate at a cellular level. Usually, after this type of treatment, you’d protect your skin from the sun by slathering on a high SPF face cream, but with circumstances being as they are, you may as well just stay indoors and enjoy a hydrating mask instead – your skin will thank you!

An ingredient that carries with it a wealth of beneficial properties, CBD is gaining a reputation as an anti-inflammatory powerhouse. If you’ve been searching for a supplement that can relieve pain, reduce inflammation and improve mood, look no further than CBD

While hugely beneficial to the millions of people who use it, we understand that an ingredient which is extracted from cannabis may be cause for concern for some readers. That’s why we’ve created this article to help put to rest any worries or questions you’ve had about what CBD is and where it comes from.

What Is CBD

CBD is an abbreviation of cannabidiol, a beneficial compound from a group known as cannabinoids, which are found in the cannabis plant. Another of these cannabinoids is THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is responsible for the inebriating qualities you may think of when you hear the word ‘cannabis’.

However, cannabis is in fact not a single plant, but a family of plants which includes hemp and marijuana. While marijuana is high in THC, hemp is biologically very different. The hemp plant has been used for centuries in the manufacture of cloth, paper and rope, thanks to its easy cultivation, hardy nature and fibrous stalk. Importantly, it is naturally low in THC, allowing the beneficial CBD to be extracted without any of the mind-altering aspects of its sister-plant.

How Does It Work?

Our body has an internal endocannabinoid system which is involved in everything from mood and appetite to inflammation and pain. As a phyto(plant)cannabinoid, CBD is able to enter this system and impact the cannabinoid receptors, helping to rebalance the body.

Studies have found that CBD is able to reduce the perception of pain, control inflammation in conditions including arthritis and IBS, and improve the symptoms of a wide range of conditions.

Who Can Benefit From Using CBD?

If you have a chronic health condition that stems from inflammation or results in you experiencing pain, taking CBD regularly is an option well worth exploring. Thanks to its pain-relieving qualities, it can also be great to throw in your gym bag for using as and when it’s needed. CBD also naturally reduces anxiety, which can benefit those struggling with stress, insomnia or low mood.

Always speak to a doctor before using CBD, as it can counteract some medications, including antidepressants and antibiotics.

What Products Contain CBD?

CBD is available in many forms and can be used in different ways depending on the condition you are struggling with. While the fastest effects come from inhaling the CBD in vape form, there are less invasive, more discreet options also available. Here are a few of our favourites:

CBD Balm

Whether you have painful arthritis in your joints or simply want something to soothe those post-exercise muscles, a balm is a great choice. Applied directly to the desired area, the CBD absorbs into your skin’s receptors and gets to work alleviating pain.

Try Healthspan CBD Balm 180mg 30ml.

CBD Drops

Taken under the tongue, oral drops are one of the most effective ways to take your CBD as they absorb directly into your system via the thin tissue.

Try Naturopathica CBD 350mg Oil

CBD Capsules

In terms of ease of use, nothing is much more straightforward than taking your CBD in capsule form. This option does take a little longer to take effect but is an easy way to incorporate CBD into your daily routine, making it particularly good for chronic conditions.

Try Canabidol CBD Capsules in 250mg, 300mg, or 1000mg.
