The Power of Charcoal: Novex’s tips for healthier hair

We were intrigued by Novex’s new Powerful Charcoal Range. We’ve seen activated charcoal make a grand entrance into the teeth whitening category, and wanted to know more about how it can be used to improve our hair. We caught up with Novex to find out exactly how it works…

Why do I need to detox my hair?

On a daily basis, our hair comes in contact with all the impurities and toxins present in the atmosphere, especially in urban areas where there is more pollution. These toxins and pollutant impurities, such as particles, are deposited in the hair and scalp. They accumulate and end up clogging the root and capillary fiber, which impairs the absorption of nutrients and the growth of the strands.

These polluting impurities need to be removed effectively and without harming the strands as well as leaving them protected against external aggressions caused by pollution.

What do the charcoal products look like? Are they black?

All the products from Novex The Powerful Charcoal line have a standard white look and feel. The mask and the conditioner have a creamy and consistent appearance, which allows the strands to be well coated. The shampoo has a liquid consistency so that the product spreads well through the scalp. The spray also has a creamy consistency, so as to protect the conditioned strands.

Where does the charcoal come from?

Activated charcoal, rather than ordinary charcoal, is charcoal especially obtained from the burning of certain woods, cork or fruit peels (e.g. coconut) under very specific conditions. Burning must be at high temperatures (8000 °C – 10000 °C) and low in oxygen. This specific firing gives activated charcoal unique properties such antipollution and detoxification.

How often do I need to use them?

The Powerful Charcoal products are a daily care range and have been developed specifically to be part of the daily routine of capillary care (regular use).

What are the three biggest mistakes people make in hair care and how can they be avoided?

  1. Blow-drying your hair without heat protection
    •  Spraying a heat protector on your hair proactively protects hair from heat damage, plus it seals in shine, calms frizz, and keeps hair from becoming dry.
  2. Not using a conditioner
    • If you’re avoiding using conditioner for fear that your hair will become too flat, think again, you can achieve volume with the right conditioner. Just like your face, your scalp needs moisture too.
  3. Forgetting to moisturize and nourish your hair
    • Hair loses moisture quickly. You can use special hair masks according to your hair type to address this problem. Even if you think your hair is relatively healthy, the change of seasons can be hard on your strands, so it’s good to get in the habit of using a mask weekly to make sure you’re giving your hair the moisture it needs.

Like the rest of our body, our hair reacts to the world around us which is why detoxing, protecting, conditioning and nourishing your hair is important if it’s going to look its best.

Summer Strand Struggles: Our Guide To Heatwave Hair

Summer ushers in the promise of long hazy nights and sunny days languishing on sandy shores with perfect mermaid hair.

However, we all know that the summer sun can bring in a whole new wave of issues when it comes to taking your hair from the beach to the club, dealing with humidity on the commute or even the joys of office air con.

From frizzy hair problems to dry ends and lack of volume, our cheat guide to Heatwave Hair is going to unpack the main ways in which you can combat summer strand struggles and maintain a tousled je ne sais quoi about your coiffure. Move over swamp monster from the deep and hello Brigitte Bardot!

Hair Mists, Sprays & Perfumes

There’s such a wide range of hair mists, sprays and perfumes on the market that it can be hard to know where to begin. We’ve picked a few of our favourites for the season below.

Looking for bounce and volume?

Reach for a Hair Mist! Hair mists contain a variety of different minerals and vitamins designed to strengthen and enrich your hair. Italian brand Davines uses turnip extract in it’s Volu mist to provide hair with vitamins A, B and C.
Davines - Volu Hair MistTo use, spray Davines Volu (RRP £25.15 Our Price £22.45) onto towel dried hair to add volume and shine. This product can be used on all hair types but is especially effective on fine or limp hair

Looking to add texture?

Maybe you should try a hair salt spray! Salt Sprays are great for adding waves and movement to your hair for that tousled beach siren look.

Alterna Caviar Style  Sea Salt Spray  (RRP £29.50 Our Price £17.95) can be used when air drying your hair and helps to protect hair from heat.
Alterna Caviar Style Sea Salt SprayDead Sea Salt adds body and waves whilst Caviar extracts help to add shine and prevent dryness. Use on damp hair.

Looking to scent your hair?

Are you a classic beauty who is fond of spritzing your favourite fragrance on your hair? You could be doing yourself a disservice due to the higher alcohol content in perfumes which have the potential to dry out your hair. Hair perfumes, sometimes also referred to as mists, are especially formulated for hair, meaning that you can protect and hydrate your hair whilst also smelling fabulous – something to consider if you suffer from dehydrated locks. Sachajuan’s protective hair perfume 50ml helps protect against static and uses ocean silk technology to provide UV protection. It’s also great for when you want to freshen up your hair without reaching for the dry shampoo. Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Mugler have also formulated hair-friendly versions of some of their cult scents.

Dry Shampoo is a key product to pack with you for festivals and glamping or even when you need an extra bit of volume for hair flattened by humidity . Fresh, Fruity or Floral? The Summer fragrances which inspire us at allbeauty

May marks the start of flower show season, so what better time of year is there to explore and embrace the world of fresh, fruity and floral scents? Read on to discover more about the summer fragrances which inspire us at allbeauty.

Floral

Penhaligon’s Blasted BloomCreated as an ode to the British coast and countryside, Penhaligon’s Blasted Bloom is a unique blend of wild berries, eglantine rose, hawthorn, pink pepper, as well as some aquatic notes. It’s the perfect scent for an English rose and a topical fragrance to wear for Summer weddings, garden parties and of course, Chelsea Flower Show.

Looking for a regal floral for men? Try Penhaligon’s Esprit Du Roi for an unusual twist on a summer floral, incorporating tomato, mint and raspberry leaves with clove, jasmine and honeysuckle.

Fruity

Les Sorbets by Nina Ricci

The new range of limited edition Les Sorbets by Nina Ricci looks so delicious, we couldn’t pick just one to feature! These pastel confections launched earlier this year as part of a collaboration with Amorino ice cream. Each edition has been created by a different perfumer and contain sweet straplines such as Cocktail Frappé, Pear Granita, and Praline Glacé. We think they’d make the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon tea with friends (ice cream optional!)

Did you know? Amorino have released their own raspberry and jasmine sorbet to commemorate the fragrance range (available at selected Amorino ice cream locations until 30 June 2019).

Another exciting fruity launch for Summer 2019 is Paco Rabanne’s irresistible Olympéa Legend, which combines desert-flower and hot sand with salty-vanilla plum. This fragrance for women builds upon the Olympéa range of fragrances and is paired with Invictus Legend, a powerful grapefruit, sea salt and geranium fragrance for men.

Fresh

Christian Dior - Dior Addict Eau FraicheChristian Dior’s Dior Addict Eau Fraiche, is a favourite at allbeauty, featuring calabrian bergamot, freesia and lily-of-the-valley.

Lily-of-the-valley, also known as Muguet, was a treasured motif of Christian Dior. As well as featuring extensively in his fragrances and designs, he also used to give a sprig of the flower on the 1st May (as per French custom) to wish luck and happiness to all his workforce and clientele for the year ahead!

Perfect for: Paying homage to the stars of Cannes Film Festival – Kirsten Dunst wore a Christian Dior Lily-of-the-valley dress in 2016 when going up the famous Cannes steps.

Light & Airy

Calvin Klein Eternity AirCalvin Klein’s Eternity Air comes in two editions for men and women, both of which are light and citrus, so suitable for those who like a softer fragrance in the summer months. As you can tell by the name, these fragrances are designed to complement each other and are inspired by blue skies and fresh atmospheres. Eternity Air for Women features grapefruit oil, peony and lily of the valley, whilst Eternity Air for Men includes mandarin oil, lavender, green apple and violet.

Marc Jacob’s Daisy Dream Sunshine is a great carefree scent for summer days. Launched in January 2019 as a limited edition, this fragrance features a combination of golden raspberries, orange blossoms and solar musk, which collide together in a sparkling cocktail of whimsical happiness.

Water

Creed Virgin Island WaterStuck at your desk and need to be transported to St Tropez, Portofino or Hawaii? The following fragrances have all been inspired by the feeling of exploration, freedom and azure waters.

The formulation of Creed’s Virgin Island Water was inspired by a sailing trip to the Caribbean – its adventurous and refreshing notes include lime, copra, hibiscus, ylang ylang and ginger. Suitable for both men and women, it really captures the essence of summer and will help you to feel like the sun is shining down on you in a tropical climate!

Moschino Forever Sailing is another ocean favourite – a fragrance designed for men; lemon, grapefruit and ice mint are combined with juniper and patchouli to emphasise fun, excitement and the power of nature.

Allbeauty’s Top Seasonal Fragrance Tips

  1. Wearing a scent that it is evocative of summer can help you get into the holiday spirit.
  2. Heat & rising temperatures can intensify the sense of smell, which is why switching heavier ‘Winter’ scents for lighter ones can help you feel more energetic
  3. Don’t leave your perfume in the sun (or near hot temperatures – this includes your bathroom), as this can shorten the perfume’s lifespan.
  4. Headed to a festival or on a summer vacation which requires travel? Take a look at allbeauty’s range of Travalo Atomisers, perfect for decanting your favourite fragrance from glass bottles and taking with you on the go.
  5. You can make new fragrance discoveries by using the allbeauty Fragrance Finder to filter perfumes by category.

Hair Loss and Hair Thinning, Meet the Experts: Foltène

Originating in Como, Italy back in 1944, Foltène has established itself across the globe as a specialist in the prevention and treatment of hair-loss and hair thinning problems. With hair health a growing item on the beauty agenda, we met the experts to ask those pressing questions about how our hair, and their products, actually work.

Did you know?
  • Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body, second only to bone marrow
  • We lose approximately 50-100 hairs per day
  • Average number of hairs per head is 100,000 -150,000
  • Our hair grows an average of 1cm per month
  • Each hair is, on average, 10-100μm (Nanometer)Brush Foltene

What causes hair loss and thinning?

Causes can vary from hormonal factors, nutritional deficiencies, aging or contemporary (stressful) lifestyles, leading to symptoms such as the weathering of the hair shaft, increased aging of the hair follicle and/or decreased melanocyte function (resulting in hair colour changes).

How does the cycle of hair work?

There are three phases in the hair cycle:

Growth (the anagen phase) – this is the developing phase that allows the hair to reform and grow. This stage lasts three to five years.

Resting (catagen phase) – this is the regressive phase. This is when the hair stops growing. This stage lasts approximately three weeks.

Falling (telogen phase) – this end phase allows the hair “pushed” out of the hair follicle by the growth of a new hair. This lasts around four months, then the hair resets the cycle.

On average, 90% of healthy hair is in the anagen phase (growth), while 10% is in the catagen (resting) or telogen (falling) phase.

How does Foltène influence the hair cycle?

Foltène products promotes more of a holistic approach on hair loss conditions and contribute to the normalisation of the hair cycle by extending the growing phase and shorting the falling phase, helping to regain a healthy hair cycle.

They also prolong the resting phase, bring more nutritive elements to the hair follicle whilst also preventing the attack of toxins.

Foltène has two patented ingredients – what do they do?

Tricosaccaride is the original patented active ingredient that helps strengthen the hair and bring the balance of the scalp to its natural condition. It also encourages the natural growth of hair and helps to reduce hair loss.

The second patented active ingredient, Tricalgoxyl, is rich in polysaccharides extracted from algae and acts to normalise the life cycle of hair. It helps reduce hair loss, encourages natural hair growth and restores the natural balance of the scalp. It’s most commonly used in Foltène’s women’s product range.

Who could benefit from using these ingredients?

We recommend the product to all men and women with hair loss problems, people who may notice extra hair in their brush or comb, people with hair which tends to be thin, fine, dry, limp or lifeless, subject to easy breakage. It’s also, recommended for chemically damaged hair.

Seoulista Q&A: An Exclusive with Founder Una McGurk

Seoulista Beauty sources innovative skincare from Seoul, widely regarded as the epicentre of beauty. We explore this exciting industry – known as K-beauty – to discover the latest, award-winning innovations and bring them to your doorstep. South Korea, the country that brought you the BB cream and other game-changing beauty staples.

Here’s everything you need to know about Seoulista Beauty.

Where does the Seoulista brand take its inspiration from?

‘Glass skin’ was first made famous by the women of South Korea, with their luminous, plumped, poreless and oh-so-smooth complexions. World leaders in beauty innovation, we take inspiration from their flawless complexions and revolutionary hi-tech skincare staples, to bring K-Beauty to the discerning beauty lovers of the Western world.

What is your mantra and how do you live by this?

Great Skin. No Fuss. No Drama.

Sometimes there is just too much to do for busy people, so we have dedicated ourselves to making radiant healthy skin one less thing to worry about. The Seoulista mantra is about delivering professional-grade treatments in the time it takes to have a cup of tea; our Instant Facials infuse the epidermis with 25ml of active ingredients to deliver instant, long-lasting results all in one simple step. No Fuss. No Drama.

What has been the highlight of the Seoulista story so far?

At Seoulista we like to make skincare fun, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t serious; the exceptional reception we have had from industry insiders proves that, and each of our 8 awards so far ha been an incredible highlight for us. It’s made every long-haul flight to Korea and late-night phone-call with our wonderful team of dermatologists totally worth it!

How do your masks works?

Unlike many other typical ‘sheet masks’, our hi-tech fibre is made from a 100% natural and biodegradable ingredient called biocellulose, created from fermented coconuts. First used in medicine to treat skin burns, it has an unrivaled ability to work in synergy with the skin and hold and distribute more than 100 times its weight in water.  So it drinks up our serums, and then once on the skin, drives the powerful ingredients in to the epidermis for instant transformational results.

What makes your masks different?

Biocellulose, mentioned above, is one of the key factors that make our Instant Facials stand-out from the crowd, as well as the quality ingredients we use in our serums. But what separates us even further, is that every product has been formulated and tested by dermatologists to ensure the utmost efficacy and results for the skin.

What’s your number one tip for choosing a face mask this spring?

With the spring comes glorious days enjoying the sun and the great outdoors, so choosing products that protect the skin from external aggressors is key. Look out for products that use vitamin C as this offers an antioxidant shield for the skin, as well as helping to stimulate collagen production at the same time – what’s not to like?! Our Brightening Instant Facial is perfect for that vitamin C infusion and dewy springtime glow. Don’t forget your SPF too though!

Awaken Your Skin This Spring

During the winter our skin experiences everything from cooler, less humid weather to dry stuffy environments that suck the moisture out of your skin, in turn leaving you with possible dryness and flakiness.  You’re likely to have used more heavyweight moisturisers, layered up the serums, balms and oils over the winter but now it’s time to say goodbye to them, and say hello to Spring.
