Is Your Skin Stressed? How To Recognise The Signs

Despite how hard you may try to ignore it, eventually, stress stops being purely in your head and starts affecting other areas of your body. You may be able to ignore those niggly aches and pains that start to surface, but there’s simply no denying the effect that stress has on your skin.

Whether you’re under a lot of stress at work or are juggling too many plates at home, your skin will be one of the first places to show the signs of it. Often, we don’t link the two, seeing those fine lines and blemishes as just another untimely thing to deal with, but by dealing with the stress head-on, you can actually improve your complexion along with your mental health.

Accelerated Ageing

Believe it or not, stress can lead to premature ageing, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear. It’s believed that the reason for this is that stress releases a hormone called cortisol, which has been shown to break down collagen. Collagen, as we know, is one of the compounds that help skin elasticity and firmness. So, during times of stress, we really can age overnight!

Acne and Blemishes

Although stress doesn’t directly cause acne, it does trigger some of the factors which lead to breakouts. Heightened stress increases the action in our adrenal glands, the part of our body that produces adrenaline and cortisol. Unfortunately, these adrenal glands also stimulate the sebaceous glands, which are responsible for oil production. Lo and behold, when we’re stressed, our skin becomes oilier, setting the stage for acne breakouts.

And it isn’t only those of us prone to acne that suffer from skin issues during stress. Stress can also increase blood flow and widen capillaries, making skin appear blotchy, red and inflamed. It’s a no-win situation!

Dryness

You may think that if stress triggers oil production, those of us with typically dry skin will reap the benefits. Sadly, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Those dastardly adrenal glands are once again the cause of skin troubles, this time due to the spike of adrenaline they produce. Adrenalin triggers the eccrine (sweat) glands, causing us to sweat more and risk dehydration. Unless you’re keeping yourself well hydrated (which, let’s face it, falls off the priority list when we’re under stress), your skin will pay the price.

Dullness

Dull skin? But didn’t we just say that stress increases blood flow? This is yet another example of how our skin bears the brunt of the stress. While circulation does indeed increase during times of stress, that circulation is concentrated around the vital organs as part of our inbuilt fight or flight response. Meanwhile, our skin goes without, leading to a lacklustre, dull complexion which makes us look tired and poorly.

Helping Stressed Skin

So, it’s not just your imagination, during times of stress, you really do like as bad as you feel. You could apply some extra concealer and highlighter and hope for the best, but we’d advocate fixing the cause, not the symptom. Take the time to learn some easy 5-minute mindfulness tricks to help bring down your cortisol levels during the day and ensure you’re staying hydrated for the sake of your skin.

When it comes to your skincare routine, stress can throw a spanner in the works, but you can prevent damage by making sure you cleanse well every evening and use a good quality moisturiser for your skin type.

Stress is unavoidable, we all have to face it at some point. But taking care of yourself is key to coming out the other side of it.

Nourkrin: Meet the Brand

How long has Nourkrin been around?

Nourkrin® has been on the market in the UK for around 30 years. It was the first natural hair growth product available in the UK and has been the market leader ever since. Nourkrin® is now a global name and is available throughout the world where, in many countries, it is actually prescribed by healthcare practitioners to those suffering from hair thinning or hair loss.

Throughout all this time, we have continued to invest heavily in research into both the products and hair growth disorders, and have more than 55 published clinical papers looking at hair growth disorders of various causes and types and how Nourkrin® can help to rebalance a disrupted Hair Growth Cycle and promote new growth.

What are hair growth vitamins?

Hair growth vitamin is a catch-all term for what are usually generic vitamin blends, sold as ‘hair, skin and nails’ preparations and which contain biotin among the list of ingredients.

However, research shows that in the western world, due to our varied diet,  vitamin deficiency only accounts for around 2% of hair loss cases. Therefore, dealing with hair loss usually requires more than just a vitamin preparation, and needs something which actively addresses the effects of the hair growth disruption – the root cause of all types of hair loss.

Proteoglycans are the molecules within all our bodies which, among other things, govern our Hair Growth Cycle. The one thing that all cases of hair loss have in common, is that these proteoglycan molecules are missing from their usual place in the hair follicle, and this leaves the follicle unable to function normally. This means that after shedding the hair, as part of the usual function of the follicle, the follicles fall dormant. As this can happen across the whole of the scalp, the effect of many dormant follicles manifests as a general thinning of the hair, usually preceded by an increase in shedding.

By supplementing with a product which contains the same proteoglycans which are found in the follicle, rather than a simple multivitamin, the Hair Growth Cycle can be rebalanced, reawakening dormant follicles and new growth can be restored.

Who are Nourkrin’s products for?

Nourkrin® is suitable for men and women who are suffering from hair thinning or hair loss, or those who wish to support and protect the health of their hair. Nourkrin® is not suitable for those who suffer from a fish allergy as the active ingredient in the tablets, Marilex®, is derived from fish.

Why is Nourkrin Unique? / What it Marilex? (How does it work)?

Nourkrin® is the only product to contain Marilex®, which contains high levels of the specific proteoglycans, and in the precise ratios and quantities, which regulate hair follicle functioning. Marilex® has been clinically proven to help induce and prolong the growth phase of the Hair Growth Cycle.

The proteoglycans in Nourkrin® help to induce dormant hair follicles back into the growth phase of the Hair Growth Cycle and also helps to elongate the growth (Anagen) phase back to a natural, healthy length (usually around 3-5 years) to ensure that each hair reaches its full growth potential before entering the transition (Catagen) phase.

By encouraging more hair follicles to re-enter the growth phase, the resting phase is pushed back to normal levels, resulting in a reduction in the levels of shedding; the combination of these two elements promotes continuous, healthy hair growth.

All ingredients in Nourkrin® are naturally based and 100% drug-free and have been tested for efficacy and safety.

If I begin taking supplements for my hair, how long should I wait to see results?

As hair is so slow-growing (think how long it took to grow out that haircut that you hated!) it can take several months before the results can become visible, in the same way, that it took several months for the effects of the hair growth disruption to show themselves. On average, most people will start to see some improvement in their hair, such as a reduction in the levels of shedding, by around 3-4 months although this can vary from person to person depending on the duration and severity of the problem.

For this reason, we always recommend a minimum programme of 6 months of Nourkrin®, as each follicle is in its own growth cycle and it can take some time for the benefits of the programme to be realised across the 100,000 follicles present on our heads.

Can supplements help my hair regrow?

By supplementing with a product which contains proteoglycans in the same ratios and quantities as found in the follicle, it is possible to help hair regrow, although there are a couple of exceptions to this. Conditions such as cicatricial alopecia (where there is permanent damage to the follicle), alopecia totalis (complete scalp hair loss) and alopecia universalis (total hair loss) are usually permanent due to the factors that cause them, however, most other types of hair loss can be helped by Nourkrin®.

I have pretty normal hair – will supplements do anything ‘extra’ for me, such as making my hair grow faster?

Your hair is only capable of growing at a certain rate (usually around ¼ to ½ inch a month), regardless of whether or not you support with supplementation, so it’s not possible to speed up growth beyond this rate. However, even for those who are not experiencing hair growth disorders, supplements can help to support their hair and improve the quality and health of the growth.

For those of us who are aware that the health of our hair is at risk, maybe as the result of a stressful period we’re going through, or because of hormonal changes or a recent illness, supplementation can help to protect the health of the follicle and existing growth and help to prevent hair growth disruption occurring.

Can my diet cause thinning hair?

Extreme dietary restriction following bariatric surgery, disordered eating conditions or even certain health conditions such as coeliac disease can cause hair growth disruptions due to the poor absorption of the nutrients from food through the gut. However, outside of this, it is unlikely that diet is to blame for your hair loss. In the modern western world, we are fortunate that our diet is typically healthy and sufficient in the protein, vitamins and minerals needed to keep our hair healthy. Hair loss as a result of a vitamin deficiency only accounts for around 2% of cases and it is far more likely for more common conditions such as stress, hormonal changes or even over-styling to be the cause of the hair loss instead.

That being said, hair does need certain nutrients to grow healthily, including protein, glucose and vitamins and, as hair consists of around 85-90% protein, making sure that you eat a varied diet which is rich in protein can help to keep your hair looking its best.

What has been the highlight of the Nourkrin® story so far?

Nourkrin® are incredibly proud to have been instrumental in helping to improve the life quality of countless women and men over the last three decades, not only in terms of the health and quality of their hair but also, equally importantly, in terms of their confidence, self-esteem and quality of life.

We’ve been awarded not one, but an unprecedented two gold medals by the hair loss experts at the World Trichology Society, for our continuous and ongoing research and development into improving the life quality of women and men suffering from hair growth disorders. In addition to this, we’re also the proud recipients of numerous consumer awards voted for by Nourkrin users, and trade awards.

What’s your number one tip for choosing or using haircare supplements?

Give them time to work! If you’re trying to redress a hair growth disorder it takes time… several months in fact. The effects of a hair growth disruption usually start to appear around 4-16 weeks after the triggering event and it can take at least this long again to start to see the visible results of a supplementation programme, which is why we recommend a minimum programme of 6 months. If the cause of your hair loss is more permanent, such as, in the case of certain health conditions or medications, then you may also need to consider a longer-term plan with your hair growth supplement, to help protect the health of the follicles and hair and maintain healthy hair growth against the effects of the trigger.

Whether you’re choosing a hair supplement to help support your hair in the face of an ongoing disrupting factor, or to help to promote growth after a period of acute hair loss, consistency is also key – remembering to take the supplement as directed on the pack and at the same or similar time every day is vital to get the best possible results from the programme.

Toolkit to Lower Your Anxiety

By Nicola Elliott, Founder NEOM Organics London

I’m not a calm person, I wish I was. I am a full-on ball of energy (and have burnt the candle at both ends) kind-of-girl. My default state is busy, busy, BUSY AND it’s probably why I suffered (and still do) from anxiety, which happens to be one of the reasons I turned to blending essentials oils to help. The NEOM Lifestyle Audit from March this year revealed that a third of the UK population suffer from stress on a regular basis – so seems it’s not just me!

So, I turned to essential oils and found blending the right ones were a massive help. In particular the blend I started with was what we now call Real Luxury with 24 different oils to work their absolute hardest for you if you’re prone to stress, or like me, anxiety. If you are not a naturally calm person, then I believe you have to learn to create calm with modern remedies for modern life. I am able to manage it every day with these oils and a bit of a wellbeing tool kit.

In a recent NEOM wellbeing article we interviewed Emily Wysock-Wright – a wellness expert and founder of self re-discovery programme, Adira who says her top tips for lowering anxiety are things like having a bath; “this is my place to cleanse my thoughts and gain perspective. Essential oils can be great for anxiety and relieving stress and I love adding lavender or chamomile to my bath.” Says Emily. She recommends trying a supplement and eating chocolate too.

It’s really important to note that what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another, so you have to find your own tool kit. It takes time to get it right BUT here are a few things that work for me…

  1. Move. Yep exercise. I love the saying that our friends over at FRAME have which is ‘support your local endorphin dealer’ – which is so true. Endorphins are good for everything!
  2. Meditate. I use the Calm app when I can (this is one of the hardest things for me to do!)
  3. Use NEOM Real Luxury oils amongst it all. My fav’s are the Magnesium Body Buttercandle (or the Essential Oil Blend in my Wellbeing Pod if time is limited and I need an instant boost) and I keep the On The Go Mist and Pulse Point handy (and use the 7/11 breathing technique alongside). Wherever I go, they go!
  4. Supplements – Magnolia Rhodiola.
  5. Reading. I find good books can reside my brain! I rate Solve for Happy by Mo Gawdat.

Stop! Did You Wash Your Hands?

It’s never been more important to wash your hands properly. Are you doing it right?

We all know how to wash our hands, right? Well, it turns out the majority of us actually haven’t been doing it properly (me included, this is a judgment-free zone). To make sure we’re all doing everything we can to protect those who need it most, here’s the low-down on proper hand-washing, including a few tips to make the whole thing a little more enjoyable.

The Equipment

To properly wash your hands, you need warm water, soap, and something to dry them afterwards. Simple enough? Well, these three little things can make all the difference to handwashing technique, especially if you’re getting one of them wrong.

Water

Many of us are guilty of not letting the water warm up enough before handwashing, and to adequately clean our hands, the temperature needs to be at least 38℃. Now, we’re not expecting everyone to start whipping out their thermometers, so to give you an idea of what 38℃ feels like, it should be warmer than body temperature. Think about how warm someone with a fever feels to the touch, that’s how warm the water should be, at least

Soap

Water alone isn’t enough to prevent viruses from spreading, which is where hand soap comes in, but here’s the thing… any soap will do, it doesn’t need to be anti-bacterial. Why? Well, antibacterial soaps are designed to kill bacteria, not viruses. The weakest part of a virus is its lipid bilayer, which is a fatty membrane that holds all the other bits together. Regular soap dissolves the fatty lipid layer, and so the virus essentially collapses and gets washed down the drain. So, by all means, use antibacterial soap if you want to, but it isn’t at all necessary for virus prevention. You can also choose between soap bars and liquid soap, but liquid soap does slightly reduce the risk of recontamination.

That being said, we’re all going to be doing a lot of handwashing over the next few months, so quality does count. Choose a soap that moisturises while it cleans, and look for scents that will make you actually look forward to washing your hands. Our current favourites are the new Neom Organics Scent To Make You Happy and L’Occitane Shea Butter Lavender Liquid Soap.

Hand Towel

Ideally, we’d all have a handy dryer to blast water off our hands, but the next best thing is a clean dry cloth. This should be changed out for a clean one daily, but if you have multiple people living at home or find the cloth is getting damp, change it more regularly. It’s also worth noting that anyone in the house who is in isolation should be using their own hand towel if a second bathroom isn’t available.

And don’t forget…

All that washing will be making your skin more likely to dry out. Replenish your skin’s moisture barrier by following up with a quality hand lotion. We love Molton Brown and Neal’s Yard Remedies, and in particular the Molton Brown Mulberry and Thyme Hand Lotion.

The Technique

Cleaning your hands is all about having the right technique, ensuring that any bacteria or viruses are removed from your skin. Here’s the step-by-step process:

Step 1. Wet hands with water and apply enough soap to cover hands (usually around two pumps).

Step 2. Rub palms together to lather.

Step 3. Rub back of each hand with your palm, interlacing fingers.

Step 4. Rub palm to palm again, this time interlacing fingers.

Step 5. Rub back of fingers to opposing palms, interlocking fingers.

Step 6. Rub each thumb by twisting it in the opposing fist.

Step 7. Rubs tips of fingers in the opposing palm.

Step 8. Rub each wrist with the opposite hand.

Step 9. Rinse.

Step 10. Turn off the tap with your elbow.

Step 11. Dry hands thoroughly.

The whole process should take at least 20 seconds when done correctly. Children are being taught to sing “Happy Birthday” twice through while hand washing, but here are a few suggestions you might prefer to try:

Dolly Parton – Jolene

“Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/ I’m begging of you please don’t take my man/ Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/ Please don’t take him just because you can”.

Culture Club – Karma Chameleon

“Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon/ You come and go, you come and go/ Loving would be easy if your colours were like my dreams/ Red, gold and green, red, gold and green”.

Toto – Africa

“It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you/ There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do/ I bless the rains down in Africa/ Gonna take some time to do the things we never had”.

Or, if you’d like to sing something a little more on-the-nose, go with one of these classics:

• Police – Don’t Stand So Close To Me

• Britney Spears – Toxic

• Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive

• MC Hammer – U Can’t Touch This

Along with social distancing, washing your hands is the best way to keep yourself, and everyone around you, safe right now. Be vigilant and stay positive, folks. Shop all of our essentials here.

What To Do When You Can’t Go Out

In these “uncertain times”, many of us are going to find staying-in our new normal. For some, this will mean uninterrupted boxsets and taking the odd conference call in our pyjamas, for others, it will involve wrangling kids and moody teenagers who have severe cases of cabin-fever – some days, it may be a combination of all of the above. But whatever “isolation” looks like for you, it doesn’t have to be a total downer.

If you look hard enough, you might just find a silver lining to this whole terrible business; time spent at home can give you the opportunity to do those things you haven’t found the time to get around to. And while we can’t give you any advice on gardening or redecorating, we can share some health and beauty products that might just take the edge off a long day.

Put Your Feet Up With A Foot Peel

If you haven’t tried one of these bad boys yet, let me tell you… there is nothing more satisfying than a good foot peel. Usually, the downside is that you have to plan it just right because your feet start peeling ‘at some point’ during the week after your treatment. Swimming pools? Out. Sandals? Out. You’ll be wanting to keep all eyes away from your feet until the dust has well and truly settled, so to speak.

Of course, this makes it the perfect treatment to do when you’re guaranteed not to be leaving the house for a lengthy period. And as a bonus, it doubles as entertainment if you’re a “peeler” (think, PVA glue on your hand at school) – you’re welcome.

Get A Head Start on Summer

Fingers crossed, we’ll all be back in the great outdoors this summer, so why not take off your winter coat? From IPL systems and epilators to razors and tweezers, we have everything you need to wave goodbye to body hair. While you’re at it, why not channel summertime-vibes by using a gradual-tanning cream, bringing a touch of colour to your newly smooth skin.

Fight The Inevitable Wrinkles

Whether it’s the pressures of working from home, the overarching worry about loved ones or the incessant declarations of “I’m bored” from a child who will. not. leave. you. alone – we’re all likely to gain a few fine lines over the coming weeks. As luck would have it, we’ve got just the thing for that!

From Philosophy, The Microdelivery Resurfacing Peel is a two-step peel that uses resurfacing crystals to buff away the outermost layer of dull skin, and a combination of lactic and salicylic acid to exfoliate at a cellular level. Usually, after this type of treatment, you’d protect your skin from the sun by slathering on a high SPF face cream, but with circumstances being as they are, you may as well just stay indoors and enjoy a hydrating mask instead – your skin will thank you!

Spring Fragrance Guide: Perfume Notes

As we enter SS20, it’s time to retire the heavy, warm fragrances of winter and turn to something that puts a hop in our step. At allbeauty, we stock thousands of decadent perfumes, and we know that narrowing down your options to a shortlist can be a tricky task! So, to help put you one step closer to finding your perfect signature scent, we’ve created this Spring Fragrance notes guide.

Choosing a Perfume Group

Entire collections of books have been written about the different olfactory groups, and many authorities have their own classification of subgroups, but we’ll endeavour to keep this as simple as possible! In general, there are four main perfume groups; floral, fresh, woody and oriental. For a Spring scent, we recommend opting for either floral or fresh and looking for additional woody base notes if you want a more masculine scent.

From here, we can look at subgroups to further narrow down the genre of fragrance. This will help to determine the notes you’re looking for in your perfume.

Refining Your Selection

Each scent family can be split down into more specific categories, some of which are heavier and some lighter. Lighter fragrances are best for Spring; so take a look at the description of each to see which appeals to you the most.

Avena Sativa

A simple ingredient with a not-so-simple name, Avena sativa is better known as the humble oat. Used in everything from haircare to hand cream, Avena sativa packs a punch when it comes to nourishing dry and irritated skin.

The chances are, if you suffer from the dreaded itch that comes with dry, sensitive skin, you’ll have already come across a product that lists Avena sativa amongst its active ingredients, but how does adding oats to skincare work, and does it live up to the hype?
Let’s find out.

What Is Avena Sativa

Avena Sativa - Ingredients

Avena sativa is the Latin name for a species of grass known as common oat. When the plant matures, its seeds become the oats that you buy from the supermarket, but if it is harvested while the plant is still green, its leaves and stem can be used to create oat straw extract. The extract is naturally high in iron, zinc, manganese and antioxidants, as well as having a number of reported health benefits.

Avena sativa is available as a tincture, powder or capsule, and is often added into moisturisers for its soothing effect on the skin. The mature oats can also be used in skincare, being ground down to create a fine powder known as colloidal oatmeal.

How Does It Work?

It’s believed that oat straw extract may have a range of benefits to the body, including improving blood flow, boosting brain function and even stabilising mood. But while those aspects are still being studied, what we do know is that Avena sativa works wonders for dry and itchy skin.

Oat straw extract contains a particular group of antioxidants called avenanthramides, which have been found to reduce inflammation both internally and on the surface of the skin. In addition, many skincare products combine the extract with colloidal oatmeal, which has its own skin-benefits.

Colloidal oatmeal creates a barrier on the skin to protect it against irritants and also contains water-binding polysaccharides and hydrocolloids which bind moisture to the skin and offer emollient properties. This moisturises dry skin and helps to maintain the skin’s natural pH balance.

Who Can Benefit From Using Avena Sativa?

Avena Sativa - Ingredients

As Avena sativa is a gentle, natural product which is well-tolerated, it can be used safely for all skin types. However, anyone who suffers from dry, itchy skin, and particularly those who struggle with eczema, will find Avena sativa particularly beneficial.

While there are many products that fight the inflammation of dry and sensitive skin, not many can relieve the accompanying itch. With some moisturisers gentle enough for use on infants, a cream that combines colloidal oatmeal and oat straw extract is a lifesaver for soothing itchy skin, even during a flare.

What Products Contain Avena Sativa?

Avena sativa can come under a range of names, depending on the type of product used. When searching for it in your ingredient list, look for oat straw (stem) or oat kernel (seeds). Here are just a few of the products you’ll find Avena sativa in:

Ask allbeauty: Top Tips for Restful Sleep

Sleep. We all need it, but most of us aren’t getting enough of it. Whether you’re partial to a late-night Netflix binge, struggle to switch off from social media, or live with tiny people who don’t understand the concept of sleeping through the night, getting a full night of restful sleep can be the stuff of daydreams.

With that in mind, the allbeauty team is here to tackle some of your sleep complaints and help you to sleep deeper, longer, and more peacefully.

“My husband feels refreshed after six hours of sleep, but I still feel drained after eight! How much sleep do I really need?”

The amount of sleep each of us needs can vary, depending on a number of circumstances. Our age, health and how active we are during the day all play a part in our sleep habits. Not to mention, we’re all unique and so are our individual sleep needs. All that being said though, the average healthy adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Head to bed an hour earlier for a solid week and see if it makes a difference to your energy levels.

“No matter what time I go to bed, I struggle to switch my brain off and end up tossing and turning. What can I do to help tune it out?”

This is one of the biggest issues facing our readers. You do all the right things, go to bed early, but end up fretting over every little thing your brain throws at you. For busy minds, a two-pronged approach is best. Aroma plays a powerful role in relaxation, so invest in a scented candle, oil or pillow spray to get to work on your subconscious. Our favourites are the Neom Scent to Sleep Diffuser and the thisworks Sleep Plus Pillow Spray. Trying some mindfulness exercises can also be incredibly helpful, so it’s well worth having one or two in your arsenal.

“I know certain scents can encourage sleep, but I don’t enjoy the smell of lavender. Do you have any other suggestions for scents I could try?

There are a handful of scents that are particularly conducive to sleep and yes, lavender is the most widely used. As a hardy plant that grows well in many climates, it’s a popular addition to sleep products. However, there are still a few great options if you’re avoiding lavender. Chamomile is a popular choice, but also vanilla, geranium and jasmine.

The Organic Pharmacy Cleanse
Rose & Chamomile Cleansing Milk 100m

Our Price: £35.00

“My kids have trouble settling down to sleep and wake multiple times before midnight. How can I encourage them to sleep so I can get to bed earlier?”

Why is it that we spend the first decade of our lives fighting sleep, and the rest of our lives trying to get more of it? Routine can play a big part in helping kids to settle to sleep, so try to create a relaxing nightly routine for them. Scent aids relaxation, so a warm bath with lavender and a calming bedtime story can help signal that its sleep time. If that doesn’t do it, the Baby Sleep Pillow Spray by thisworks is sure to send them off to dreamland. With soothing chamomile, lavender and vetiver, it’s suitable from 6 months. For younger babies, a gentle massage with Cowshed Baby Rich Massage Oil will have the same effect.

“I love to catch up on my favourite shows in bed, but I’ve heard it can impact my sleep. Any ideas?”

You’ve heard right, the blue light emitted from your tv, tablet or phone can trick your brain into thinking it’s daytime, which makes it more difficult to drift off to sleep. In fact, it’s recommended to avoid screens for at least an hour before bed. Instead, why not listen to a podcast? Equally entertaining when you feel like you’re not yet ready to surrender to sleep, a good podcast can satisfy your tv cravings without any negative after-effects. For a particularly sleepy podcast, we love Sleep With Me.

“I struggle to wind down after a day at work. How can I create an evening that’s more conducive to sleep?”

Along with the other tips we’ve discussed, such as avoiding screens an hour before bed, you may want to consider taking a long bath on the nights you most struggle to unwind. The heat of a bath can relax your muscles, reduce stress and give your brain a chance to process the day. Make the most of your soak by using sleep-supporting scented bath oil, such as Elemis Sleep Bath and Shower Elixir or Weleda Lavender Relaxing Bath Milk.

Busting Feet Myths for National Feet Week

Read our blog & enter the competition below, good luck!

It’s National Feet Week, the time of year we cast a guilty glance downward and wonder how long it’s been since our tootsies last got given any TLC. It’s ironic really, that Feet Week falls during the depths of winter when our feet have been wilfully neglected for months. Well, it’s time to turn that around. Here are some myths (and truths) about feet, along with some of our favourite feet-friendly products.

It’s bad for you to walk barefoot – MYTH

While many of us squirm at the thought of walking around barefoot, it’s actually very good for your feet. Walking barefoot on natural surfaces strengthens muscles, helping both balance and coordination. While we don’t suggest you forego shoes altogether, taking an occasional stroll in your garden sans footwear can make a difference to your posture and muscle strength. After getting back to nature and letting your feet get dirty, give them a soak and treat them to a pedicure. It doesn’t get much easier than the Seoulista Rosy Toes Instant Pedicure!

Feet are best left alone – MYTH

While our feet are pretty self-sufficient, taking care of them should be a priority. After all, our feet ground our bodies; if they are in any way impacted, so too are our hips, back and overall posture.

As well as seeing a podiatrist at the first sign of foot discomfort, basic care should include taking care of your toenails and moisturising the hardest wearing areas around the heel and ball of the foot. While it can be tempting to forget your feet altogether over Winter, pulling on socks and hoping for the best-come Spring, this is the time of year your feet need you the most. Regular moisturising with a cream designed to penetrate the thicker layers of skin will ensure you don’t have to battle with cracked heels down the line. We love this Intense Foot Balm by L’Occitane for this exact reason.

Your feet don’t change size in adulthood – MYTH

Your shoe size is the one thing that stays consistent through the ups and downs of adulthood, right? Wrong. As many as 20% of women will change shoe size during pregnancy, with many of these not returning to their previous size after birth. This is due to a hormone called relaxin, which as well as allowing a woman’s body to stretch to accommodate a baby, also allows the joints in the feet to stretch.

For most women, the change is less than 5mm, so the difference isn’t noticeable, but for many others, the need for new shoes is right up there with baby grows and nappies.

Toenails shouldn’t be cut on a curve – TRUE

When it comes to trimming your nails, shape matters in more ways than one. Cutting toenails into a curved shape can cause serious damage to the nail bed, resulting in ingrown nails and infection. While the top edge of your nail may have a natural curve, the corners should never be rounded off toward the nail bed. Instead, nails should be left a little long and simply trimmed along the top to create a natural shape.

Be sure to use the right nail clippers too, as the smaller clippers made for fingernails aren’t designed for the thicker structure of toenails. This twin set of clippers by Tweezerman are a great investment and will last for years.

Removing dead skin on feet keeps them healthy – TRUE

While rough, dry skin on feet isn’t going to cause you any health issues on its own, it can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. As your feet sweat, the dead skin can become moist and create the perfect environment for conditions such as athlete’s foot (particularly in the warmer areas between the toes).

Keep on top of your foot health with a regular exfoliation using Cowshed Revive Foot Scrub and follow with a moisturiser, such as Clarins Foot Beauty Treatment Cream.

Stinky feet signals poor hygiene – MYTH

There are a number of reasons that people experience smelly feet, due to exercise, footwear, diet or health conditions. It’s an embarrassing problem, and one which often comes with a stigma of having poor hygiene; this simply isn’t the case. If you are battling foot odour and need a short-term fix while you find a treatment option, we have just the thing.

Before starting your day, apply Dr Haushka Deoderising Foot Cream. Infused with rosemary oil, silk and rice starch, the cream absorbs moisture, softens the skin and deodorises. Then, when out and about, keep a can of Elemis Tea Tree S.O.S. Spray close at hand. With antibacterial properties, it not only smells great but keeps odours at bay and prevents bacteria from taking hold.

Whether you love or loathe your feet, show them a little love this week. After all, they’ve earned it. Shop All Feet Now.
