The Power of Charcoal: Novex’s tips for healthier hair

We were intrigued by Novex’s new Powerful Charcoal Range. We’ve seen activated charcoal make a grand entrance into the teeth whitening category, and wanted to know more about how it can be used to improve our hair. We caught up with Novex to find out exactly how it works…

Why do I need to detox my hair?

On a daily basis, our hair comes in contact with all the impurities and toxins present in the atmosphere, especially in urban areas where there is more pollution. These toxins and pollutant impurities, such as particles, are deposited in the hair and scalp. They accumulate and end up clogging the root and capillary fiber, which impairs the absorption of nutrients and the growth of the strands.

These polluting impurities need to be removed effectively and without harming the strands as well as leaving them protected against external aggressions caused by pollution.

What do the charcoal products look like? Are they black?

All the products from Novex The Powerful Charcoal line have a standard white look and feel. The mask and the conditioner have a creamy and consistent appearance, which allows the strands to be well coated. The shampoo has a liquid consistency so that the product spreads well through the scalp. The spray also has a creamy consistency, so as to protect the conditioned strands.

Where does the charcoal come from?

Activated charcoal, rather than ordinary charcoal, is charcoal especially obtained from the burning of certain woods, cork or fruit peels (e.g. coconut) under very specific conditions. Burning must be at high temperatures (8000 °C – 10000 °C) and low in oxygen. This specific firing gives activated charcoal unique properties such antipollution and detoxification.

How often do I need to use them?

The Powerful Charcoal products are a daily care range and have been developed specifically to be part of the daily routine of capillary care (regular use).

What are the three biggest mistakes people make in hair care and how can they be avoided?

  1. Blow-drying your hair without heat protection
    •  Spraying a heat protector on your hair proactively protects hair from heat damage, plus it seals in shine, calms frizz, and keeps hair from becoming dry.
  2. Not using a conditioner
    • If you’re avoiding using conditioner for fear that your hair will become too flat, think again, you can achieve volume with the right conditioner. Just like your face, your scalp needs moisture too.
  3. Forgetting to moisturize and nourish your hair
    • Hair loses moisture quickly. You can use special hair masks according to your hair type to address this problem. Even if you think your hair is relatively healthy, the change of seasons can be hard on your strands, so it’s good to get in the habit of using a mask weekly to make sure you’re giving your hair the moisture it needs.

Like the rest of our body, our hair reacts to the world around us which is why detoxing, protecting, conditioning and nourishing your hair is important if it’s going to look its best.

Fake Tan Manual – How to Get the Perfect Glow

Fake tan needn’t be tricky. So whether you’d rather not sit out in the sun, or need a bit of colour before you don that new bikini, our manual will guide you to the best home tanning products and help you tan like a Pro!

The secret to a great fake tan is making sure you have the right products. So before we begin, ask yourself two questions:

What kind of tan do I need? – A quick fix for pasty legs, a gentle glow or all-over serious colour?
How much time do I have? – Rushing from work, time to prepare?

Got your answers? Let’s get stuck in!

THE QUICK FIX INSTANT ‘TAN
Which Is…

Basically colour in a bottle. Smoothed over skin it gives immediate colour but washes off with soap (hoorah, no mitts or gloves!). All you need is a few minutes of drying time and you’re good to go.

Good For?

Office parties, last minute dates, unexpected swimming and “my legs look TERRIBLE” moments. Always have some in your cupboard!

Pros

  • Super-fast to apply, instant colour
  • Quick drying
  • Can usually be layered to get deeper colour
  • Needs soap to remove so no rain-related disasters

Cons

  •  Very temporary
  • Needs reapplication
  • Looks horrid going down the drain

How To Apply:

Bare hands are fine but a mitt or gloves are useful. Use quick, long strokes and blend by eye.

Benefit Hoola Body Bronzer

We Love: Benefit Hoola Zero Tanlines Body Bronzer

This smooth, non-sticky body bronzer glides on HANDS FREE and blends on instantly & seamlessly for a thoroughly believable bronze. Beachin’ bonus…the 12-hour Hoola Zero Tanlines formula stays on even when your clothes come off.

THE MEDIUM FIX Quick developing tan
Which Is…

Like the classic fake tan, these need time to develop and won’t wash off. However, things have come a long way since you walked around the house naked for 8 hours scared to touch anything – these options dry fast and develop fast.

Good For?

Parties, balls, short breaks – any occasion where you want a proper tan but don’t want to invest much time.

Pros

  • Easy to apply, quick drying.
  • Some brands such as St Tropez are coloured so you can see where you’re applying the product.
  • Won’t wash off even with soap so great for any situation.

Cons

  • Take time to develop
  • Requires care when applying (you need mitts or gloves and must protect eyebrows/hairline) to avoid orange hands!
  • A little preparation is needed, especially exfoliation and moisturiser around dry areas.

How To Apply:

Definitely use a mitt and/or gloves! Apply in long, sweeping movements for best results. Some products can be showered off so check the product details.

St. Tropez Express Bronzing Mousse

We Love: St Tropez Express Bronzing Mousse 200ml

This easy to use, quick drying and lightweight mousse is specially formulated to absorb quickly into the skin, allowing you to select your shade of tan by choosing when to wash off the tinted guide colour.

The classic full tan
Which Is…

The classic fake tan needs time to develop and won’t wash off. May take several hours to develop, and will need proper preparation for great results.

Good for?

They’re top of the list if you’re going on holiday or need a serious, all-over tan that lasts a solid week before reapplication.

Pros

  • Usually coloured so you can see where you’re applying product
  • Won’t wash off even with soap
  • Can usually be topped up with further applications a week or so later to keep the tan going.

Cons

  • Take time to develop
  • Requires proper care when applying (mitts or gloves and you must protect eyebrows/hairline).
  • In some cases you can’t get dressed for a short while after application.
  • Preparation is needed for best results – exfoliate and moisturise, preferably the day before.

How To Apply

Application in the usual way with a tanning mitt or gloves.

Xen-Tan Fresh Tanning Mousse

We Love: Xen-Tan Fresh Tanning Mousse

With its lightweight and smooth texture, Xen-Tan’s Fresh Tanning Mousse provides even and easy application for colour in just 3-4 hours. Packed with natural ingredients including peptides, green tea, ginkgo biloba, aloe vera and vitamins D & E, it provides thorough nourishment and hydration to help keep skin smooth and healthy in addition to wonderfully tanned.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Aside from fake tan products, there are a host of complementary items to help you get the look. For even application a tanning mitt is a must. Body exfoliation will create the perfect base, but try a specialist one such as St Tropez Body Polish. Proper exfoliation after you apply your fake tan will help it to fade more evenly. It also creates a base for re-application if you want to keep your fake tan going all summer. Fake tan products are unisex but men may like Clinique Face Tinted Lotion.

Which fake tan brand is your favourite? Is this summer your first wearing fake tan? Let us know!

The Seasonal Savvy Shopper Guide

The seasonal savvy shopper needs a plan of action. We present (pun intended!) our tips on how to approach Christmas shopping, avoid stress and get the best deals.

seasonal savvy shopper
The seasonal savvy shopper should always be prepared. So get a proper piece of paper and a pen and make a list (if you prefer something hi-tech, we like ToDoist). To help you out, we’ve put together a list of people who sometimes get forgotten. Of course you don’t have to include everyone (unless you’re a millionaire), but is someone special included here?

  1. School: teachers, classroom assistants, dinner ladies, lollipop men/women, school mums, kids best friends, brownie/dance class leaders, bus driver
  2. Work: secret santa, watercooler best friend, boss, supplier
  3. Home: neighbours (especially elderly or anyone alone)
Keep a sticky note on your desk and jot down anyone who comes to mind.

seasonal-savvy-shopper
If you haven’t already, sign up to the allbeauty.com newsletter and make sure you follow us on Facebook or Twitter. If it’s happening at allbeauty that’s where you’ll hear about it. Plus you may receive an email exclusive code or free gift. And from time to time we run email-only flash sales, so it really does pay to be in the know. Don’t worry, we don’t ever sell your details to other companies or pass them to 3rd party providers without permission, and you can always unsubscribe after Christmas (you meanie you!). You can register here or, if you’re already registered, just log in to My Account > Contact and Billing and tick the subscription box.

seasonal-savvy-shopper
Don’t be afraid to split up a gift set *gasp*. We know, lovely packaging etc. etc. But sometimes it just makes sense to buy a set then split it up. Gift sets are always good value and individual items are cheaper than if you bought them alone. Plus you often find exclusives that aren’t available elsewhere. Then there’s Secret Santa – getting something nice on a tiny budget can be hard, so look out for sets you can split.

seasonal-savvy-shopper
How about this Penhaligon’s scent library, where you can get 10 stocking filler fragrances from a bespoke Parfumier, for under £2 each! Or this Sarah Jessica Parker set that can be split into (gift one) the 100ml fragrance + (gift two) body lotion & rollerball, at a cost of just £11 for each gift (and a gorgeous storage box for you!). Consider it, that’s all we’re saying.

seasonal-savvy-shopper
Know you’ll be buying fragrance, but don’t know their scent?
There are a few ways round this, so eyes down:

Espionage – the easy option, you rope in a spouse or take a detour past their bedroom and see what’s on the dresser
Subterfuge – next time you’re together say “wow what’s that fragrance you’re wearing? It’s lovely”. They’ll usually respond with “Oh it’s XYZ” or else tell you they don’t wear fragrance. If it’s the latter, pay attention to why (maybe they’re allergic) or what they think you’re smelling eg their soap (that’s a clue they like clean, fresh scents)
The Blatant Option – ask them! The earlier you do it, the less they’ll associate you asking with Christmas
Get Clever – encourage people to use our Christmas printables to hint/downright tell you what they want
If you’re really stuck but you don’t want to give a voucher, our advice is to buy a gentle fragrance then have it gift wrapped and dispatched direct by our team. That way the recipient can always exchange without you needing to know…
We suggest Ghost The Fragrance for her or Davidoff Cool Water For Men

seasonal-savvy-shopper
It’s easy to get carried away – this is where the seasonal savy shopper’s trusty list comes in! Next to each name write a fragrance or gift idea and a rough amount you want to spend. Use our Christmas shop to shop by price or category and you’ll easily stay on-budget.

We hope you enjoyed our seasonal savvy shopper tips – have some of your own? Comment below or leave us a message on our social accounts, we’d love to hear from you!

Her First Makeup Routine – Our Advice for Tweens to Teenagers

A first makeup routine doesn’t need to be scary! Share the experience and make it a fun learning curve – here’s our advice on products and skincare, age-appropriate for younger skin.

A first makeup routine should aim to enhance rather than change her looks.

Our Top Tips For A First Makeup Routine

*   Pick products for young skin – if possible, look for natural brands that don’t include parabens or fragrance. Brands for sensitive skin are a great choice for Tweens to Teenagers
*   Encourage her to use brushes and sponges for good hygiene
*   If she’s being stubborn, go to a department store and ask for a free makeover – the makeup artist’s advice will usually be accepted quicker than Mum’s!
*   Include a good makeup remover in her kit and a moisturiser if she’s a Teenager
*   Stay clear of waterproof mascara, it can be very hard to remove…
*   Foundation that comes in a pump means just the right about is dispensed

first makeup routine Start Small…
Yes she follows artists on Insta who cake on the layers and contour like mad. But the look you’re aiming for is natural enhancement. Mascara and lip gloss keeps most 10 to 12 year olds happy – they’re both easy to apply and sufficiently grown up. If you go down this route, make sure you change her mascara every 3 months and insist she never ever ever shares it with friends. If she needs convincing, this recent story about a model who ended up with an eye infection should make the point!
We like Mavala mascara for sensitive eyes and Lancome Juicy Shakers.
 first makeup routine

Get The Basics
Makeup remover has to be top of your list, it’s easier to get into good habits than to break bad ones. These Manuka Doctor purifying wipes are cleanser, toner and moisturiser all in one and contain antibacterial qualities – ideal for young skin. Moisturiser is a must if she’s wearing foundation though it may feel too much for some Teens. ThisWorks In Transit Camera Close Up is a splurge, but it’s also primer, moisturiser and face mask all in one. It’ll hold makeup and create the perfect base, so we say it’s worth the spend.

 first makeup routine

Keep It Natural
If she’s ready for foundation, consider tinted moisturiser. It’s easier to apply and harder to make mistakes. If acne is a problem though, foundation is a fabulous way to build up her confidence. We love Vichy Dermablend, a high coverage foundation with a lightweight, natural finish. There are 2 types, one for all skin types (and with an SPF of 25) or one specifically for oily, acne-prone skin. Incidentally, we all know about blending the jawline, but you might want to take a look at our post on 6 areas you miss most when applying foundation. Dermablend also has a range of matching concealers if extra coverage is needed. Can you wear concealer on its own? Of course! If she’s only getting the odd spot, then consider buying just the concealer.

 first makeup routine

Tools
We’ve already said that brushes are a great way to start – keep fingers out of it as much as possible! The Real Techniques Deluxe Gift Set contains a brush for foundation, blush, highlighter, concealer and eyes. For foundation though, the easiest tool in the world is a beautyblender. Just moisten the sponge, squeeze it out and you’re good to go.

We love this video by makeup artist Kandee Johnson, showing you all the ways you can use the BB:

first makeup routine Multi-taskers = Best Friends!
The last thing anyone needs in a first makeup routine is a heavy bag of products, so look for multi-tasking palettes. This one by theBalm Cosmetics contains a blush, a highlighter and basic eye shadows (that can also double as brow powder). An optional extra would be bronzer in the summer.

Let us know in the comments below if you have any tips for a first makeup routine. And tell us how old you were when you first wore serious makeup – any makeup no-nos you regret?!

Men’s Eyebrow Grooming – A Guide For Beginners

We pick 2 videos showing how easily men’s eyebrow grooming gives a polished, groomed look. Plus, top tips for guys on all things eyebrow.

Men’s eyebrow grooming is fairly common these days – whether simple trimming or full-scale shaping, it’s easy to get a natural, masculine look.

Simple Men’s Eyebrow Grooming – you don’t want to shape or pluck, just make sure they’re under control? This is the video for you. All you need is a comb and a pair of small, facial scissors >

Detailed Men’s Eyebrow Grooming – don’t be afraid, this does include plucking! It’s really ok though, just grasp the hair firmly and pull fast. It’s over in a second, we promise!

Products to use:
There are plenty of tweezer shapes out there, but for brows you need slanted tweezers. The sharp pointed ones are for ingrown hairs or splinters. If you’re a tweezer novice, these Tweezerman tweezers with a wide grip are ideal. Note the slanted tips and wide ‘handle’:

Mens Eyebrow Grooming Tweezerman For Him

If you just want to neaten the brows, then choose a pair of facial scissors. These Tweezerman Facial Scissors are perfect and even come with a small comb:

Mens Eyebrow Grooming Tweezerman Facial Scissors

Additional Tips For Men’s Eyebrow Grooming:

  1. Brush the hairs with an old toothbrush to neaten them before or after trimming.
  2. Spray the toothbrush (not the brows!!) with hairspray and brush it through to fix the brows in place. Alternatively a little hair wax or hairspray applied to the finger will work fine (you can also use Vaseline, it’s a tried and tested brow holder!).
  3. If you pluck you may find the area goes red for a short while. Don’t panic! This is normal and redness will go away fairly soon. However bear this in mind if you’re grooming before you go out.
  4. Will plucking the brows stop them growing? This can happen over time but it’s very unlikely your brows will stop growing after one session of plucking. If you do over-do it don’t worry – they WILL grow back!
  5. Don’t over-pluck! Remember, it’s easier to take away than to put back. Pluck a few hairs on each side and compare the result before moving on. The old saying ‘eyebrows should be brothers not twins’ is true; don’t aim to match perfectly – it’s just not natural.

Do you have any questions or comments about shaping male brows? Are there any guides you like that you think we should feature? Comment down below.

Fragrance Guide: From EDT to EDP & Storage

There are some questions we’re asked every day: Where to store perfume? What’s Aftershave Balm? EDT or EDP? Here’s the allbeauty.com fragrance guide, what it is and the best way to store it.

What is Fragrance?

The main ingredient in every fragrance is alcoholic water. The actual scent is then added, usually a creation of essential oils, natural and synthetic fragrances. The fragrance strength determines the price. All fragrance can be sprayed onto the body or clothing, but for hair it’s best to use a dedicated hair mist.

Womens’ Fragrance Guide (shop women’s fragrance here)

Parfum is the strongest possible concentration and the rarest. It’s also incredibly expensive and prices can run into hundreds of pounds for a tiny amount. Parfum is usually only available for very high end fragrance or from bespoke parfumiers.

Eau de Parfum (or EDP) is the strongest available ‘high street’ fragrance available for women. It’s usually kept for evening wear or special occasions due to the intensity.

Eau de Toilette (or EDT) is the most popular concentration. EDT contains a higher percentage of water and nearly always comes in a spray. It’s lightweight and ideal for everyday wear.

Eau de Cologne is rare these days and weaker than EDT. It’s usually supplied in a ‘splash’ bottle and dabbed on the wrists or neck.

Eau Fraiche is the weakest concentration available and is often called ‘Perfume Mist’. Frequently alcohol free, it’s fantastic for summer months when it helps to cool you down and add a soft scent.

Womens Fragrance Guide

Men’s Fragrance Guide (shop men’s fragrance here)

Eau de Toilette Spray (EDT) is usually the strongest concentration available and can be used on the body and on clothing. However it shouldn’t be used as an aftershave as it may cause irritation.

Aftershave is weaker than EDT and can be used on the face. It’s also known as ‘aftershave lotion’ but don’t be put off, aftershave lotion is definitely NOT a balm! It’s just the way the French describe aftershave that’s intended to be splashed onto the face. Aftershave lotion is always a liquid, usually supplied in a splash bottle.

Aftershave Balm is a perfumed lotion or a cream usually intended to soothe skin after shaving as well as adding scent.

Mens Fragrance Guide

Fragrance Tips:

Keep your fragrance away from heat, light and humidity – that means definitely NOT in the bathroom! A bedside table or drawer is ideal (unopened fragrance will last at least four years if you store it correctly.)

It’s completely true, fragrances do not smell the same on everyone. Nor do they last the same amount of time from person to person. The chemical makeup of your skin is the reason for this. It’s also possible to become ‘nose blind’ to a scent you love and if you start to find you can’t smell it any more, it’s time to change your scent.

Gifts For Him: Shopping For A Colleague

Buying gifts for him is easy when you know his fragrance, likes, dislikes etc. But now and then we’re all called on to shop for a colleague we don’t know too well. Read our top tips on how to tackle this problem.

Gifts for him isn’t all about socks and a comedy mug! Shop smart with the allbeauty.com guide.

Question: What’s the budget?
If there’s been a collection and you have a decent sized pot (£50+) go for high end fragrance or grooming. Think brands like Tom Ford, Penhaligon’s, Issey Miyake. No idea what scent to buy? One hugely popular bestseller is Hermes – Terre d’Hermes. A blend of wood and citrus notes, for all ages and tastes, you simply can’t go wrong with this fragrance. Alternatively choose Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme, a warm woody scent with lavender and sandalwood. Again there’s no way you can go wrong with this scent – you’ll just have to trust us!!

STAR LUXURY FRAGRANCE GIFT BUY: Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme

But what if the budget can’t stretch that far? You can still opt for fragrance, just keep away from anything celebrity (risk of offence!) or scents that are too heavy or oriental. Light, fresh scents are your friend and brands such as Davidoff and Boss (especially Boss Bottled) are real winners.
STAR BUDGET FRAGRANCE GIFT BUY: Davidoff Cool Water For Men SetGifts for him Davidoff Cool Water

Problem: fragrance is out.
If, for whatever reason, you know that fragrance is out (he’s addicted to Lynx, he has an allergy etc.) what does that leave? Traditionally at this point we’d be looking at shaving and grooming. However, we think a nice twist is to choose a haircare set that focuses more on styling. Perfect men-only brands include TIGI Bed Head for Men (great for younger guys), Label M and Paul Mitchell.

Sorry, don’t want to buy haircare either…
No problem, that still leaves us with ‘useful’ gifts. We’re talking gym, travel, commuting etc. Does he travel a lot or spend time at the gym? A body set that comes with a travel bag is a great option like this one from L’Occitane.

Fragrances For Tweens – The Top 10

Girls love fragrance at any age, but pre-teens will love to open their very own perfume; make them feel special with a scent just for them. allbeauty.com picks the 10 best fragrances for Tweens and Pre-Teens.

image

Justin Bieber Someday
The first fragrance by the pop icon, this is a very creditable fruity scent that wouldn’t be out of place on Mum’s dressing table (confession: your writer owns a bottle!). A stunning bottle with a cute heart-and-key clip which can be taken off and re-used. Actually a shame if she doesn’t like Bieber, this is rather lovely. As fragrances for tweens go, this is one of the best.

image

Katy Perry Purr Eau de Parfum 100ml
Peach with a hint of coconut and in a bottle that manages to be fun and glam at the same time, Katy’s first fragrance is adorable with a slightly grown up edge that an older tween will love. The box features Katy dressed in a catsuit in a sultry pose – perfectly tame but may not feel suitable for younger girls, we think age 11+.

image

One Direction That Momen
That Moment is the second fragrance from 1D (’Our Moment’ was the first, with ‘You and I’ third and the latest release being ‘Between Us’. Yes, 1D have 4 fragrances…) It’s a fresh, apple scent, in a bottle that’s pure glam – not that she’s that bothered, Harry et al know how it smells and that’s the important bit. It also has the boys on the box (of course).

Hello Kitty Funny Love Eau de Toilette 50ml
Made especially for girls, with a fresh apple and fruit scent, this would suit a younger tween. Adorable Hello Kitty packaging will delight any little princess!

image

Aquolina Pink Sugar Eau de Toilette
Considered a fragrance for any age, Aquolina is a sugary, sweet, very girly scent plus it’s also a bestseller. Very suitable for pre-teens or teenagers, but if the sugary scent doesn’t appeal then try Pink Sugar Simply Pink, a fruitier option.

image

Paris Hilton Passport In Paris Eau de Toilette Spray 30ml
A super-fun fragrance with top notes of vanilla and peach. Ideal for fans of Barbie, it’s young and fun for wannabe jet-setters (and very purse friendly!).

image

Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers Wicked Style G Eau de Toilette 30ml
Don’t underestimate this little scent – dedicated to Tokyo style with an ultra fun bottle, it’s incredibly popular with all age groups. Watermelon and pineapple are the main notes, keeping it fresh enough for youngsters.

image

Anna Sui Fairy Dance Secret Wish Eau de Toilette 30ml
