5 Tips for Winter Hair Care

As the season changes from summer into autumn/winter, our hair steadily becomes more dry and fragile. Unfortunately, most women know exactly how frustrating it is to battle with hair in this condition, but many of us don’t understand why it happens.

Why Does My Hair Get Dry In Winter?

As the temperature outside cools, it affects our bodies in numerous ways. Most of us know all too well that winter means dry, chapped skin, but did you know it does the same to your hair?

As it’s exposed to the elements, the shaft of the hair (the part that emerges from the scalp) becomes drier and therefore becomes more susceptible to breakage. The dry, brittle hair results in a mane that is rough, unmanageable and wild.

Before you resign yourself to spending the next three months in a woolly hat, it’s important to understand how to provide your hair with the extra care it needs to restore its shine and smoothness.

Breathing Life Back Into Winter Hair

The good news is, reviving your brittle, lackluster hair to more closely resemble your luscious locks of Summer isn’t as difficult a battle as it may seem. We’ve called on hair experts, Novex, to reveal the best ways to take care of winter hair. With these easy tips, you’ll have your shine back in no time.

Take Care with Temperature

This tip applies throughout the year, not just in winter. When you wash your hair, avoid using water that is too hot. Not only can hot water strip your hair of its natural oils, but it can also cause damage to the root, leading to problem hair. Instead, use warm water to wash your hair and consider finishing your shower with a final shot of cold water, this helps your hair to renew its natural shine.

Don’t Sleep On Damp Hair

We all enjoy a nice warm shower on a particularly cold winter evening, but think twice before wetting your hair. If you go to bed with wet hair, your scalp stays damp during the night. Not only is this bad for the delicate skin, but it’s also an ideal breeding ground for nasty bacteria that can weaken your hair.

Step Away From The Hat

On a bad hair day, it can be tempting to reach for a cover-up, but wear headbands and hats with care. The use of accessories can actually damage the hair, leading to a self-perpetuating cycle of hair issues. Don your head with decorative accessories sparingly – your hair will thank you.

Up Your Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a fantastic vitamin and is extra important for your health in winter. Not only does it keep the nasty cold at bay, but vitamin C helps to combat hair loss and restore shine. By prompting cuticles to close, vitamin C improves the appearance and condition of your hair, even helping it to maintain colour longer.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

It’s a mantra that applies to a myriad of winter complaints, but hydration is especially important for dry hair. Using the right product can provide an extra dose of moisture and revitalise dry hair. Enriched with the purest coconut oil and vitamin E, we recommend the Novex Coconut Oil range to maintain natural moisture and fight frizz. Try the Novex Leave-In Conditioner for deep hydration and long-lasting silky tresses.

This winter, show your hair the love it deserves with Novex.

allbeauty & The Little Princess Trust

This Autumn, one special member of our allbeauty team has made an inspirational change by donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust. We have had the pleasure to travel with Maggie through her journey and ask all the questions before she takes the chop.

1inch? 2inch? 3inch? Read More…

#1 Tell us a little bit about yourself, what do you do at allbeauty?

My name’s Maggie, I started at allbeauty in 2016 as a Christmas temp in Customer Services, then moved up to Stock Management after nearly a year where I edit product images.

#2 You’re chopping off your hair and donating it, that’s amazing! Could you share insight on why you are doing this?

It’s a bit of a weird reason as my inspiration was bald before the cancer! My Papa was diagnosed with cancer several years ago and he was always so strong, he didn’t complain once and was always so kind and patient even when you could see him in the worst pain. It got me thinking about how I would handle being in his situation and in all honesty, the thought of losing my hair would be terrifying. Thinking about what he went through happening to a child, and on top of that losing their hair is heartbreaking and I just wanted to help.

#3 How long have you been growing your hair?

About a year and a half!

#4 What products have you been using?

I use a mask about once a week (sometimes every other week if I’m feeling lazy), I love the TIGI Bed Head Urban Antidotes Resurrection Treatment Mask. I have naturally slightly dry hair and it feels so silky after using this. Every day I use the Macadamia Natural Oil  Healing Oil Treatment, and sometimes if I know I’m washing my hair the next day I’ll slather on a load before bed.

#5 Do you know how much hair you are donating?

The minimum donation is 7 inches and I should be donating around 10 inches. I would love to grow it again after this and donate even more!

#6 What happens when you donate?

Donated hair is sent to a special factory it’s hand knotted into a wig base, and a single wig can contain up to 10 different donations. The hair is never coloured or treated, so it is always a high quality finish and they are able to offer a range of different natural colours and lengths so suit every individual. A family can then request a wig and can visit an approved salon to choose a wig and have it styled.

#7 How do you feel about donating your hair?

I’m excited to be helping someone out there feel a bit better during such a difficult period in their lives, but at the same time it’s so sad that any one has to go through this in the first place. Cutting the hair off itself is the easy bit, I’m totally fine with that!

#8 What hairstyle are you going for next and where will you be getting it cut?

The ultimate trim! Nothing fancy, just chopping it off around the shoulder so that I can grow it again without having to wait for layers to grow out or anything. The allbeauty salon in Guernsey, the staff there are so and I trust them fully with my locks!

#9 What the first thing you are going to do with your new hair style?

Try and learn how to style short hair!

#10 What’s your advice for someone that is thinking about getting their haircut and donating it?

Just do it, it will grow back!

COMING SOON 28th SEPTEMBER:  Maggie takes the chop

Beat The Breakage

When you take a look in the mirror, say goodbye to the sad memories that summer is over and say hello to the new Autumn you. Repair and rejuvenate with allbeauty.

Summer, gone for now but never forgotten. Now to move onto the next chapter and welcome Autumn with open arms. But sometimes that can be tricky when we are suffering from a couple of the disturbances summer has cooked up. Yes, it may have caused a couple of poorly heads the morning after the BBQ’s in the garden or encouraged more freckles to appear than we would have ideally chosen however, we cannot forget the damage the sun can cause us, especially to our hair. We all know that U.V Rays and direct sunlight can have a huge impact on our skin but occasionally we forget the damage it causes to our hair.

Damages

Damage to our hair can be brought on by the core four;

  • Heat
  • Chlorine
  • Salt water
  • Sun exposure

If you notice that your hair has;

  • Turned brittle (a bit like an old twig)
  • Gone a little dry (lack of natural oils)
  • Prone to breakage (just like your old vintage china tea cup)
  • Has decided to fall out (childhood memories of me and my sister)

We have a couple of ideas that could be perfect for you to beat the breakage…

#1 Mask It

The magic of hair treatments. Masks are an intense and powerful formula which sink into our hair and nurture each strand. For post-summer frail hair, smother a mask (after shampoo) when in the shower and leave for 3-5 minutes whilst you let the goodness go to work. Welcome back hydration and happy feeling hair again. Guess what’s even better? You can still smell the glorious scent of these hair masks when you are out of the shower, thanks to the long lasting fragrances. Why shouldn’t your hair smell great too?

Kérastase Blond Absolu Masque Ultra Violet Treatment 200ml Our Price £24.50 save 30% off RRP

#2 Growth

We would love to put a solution on our scalp and grow thick, bouncy and volumized  hair, just like Meghan Markle. But sometimes our dreams are too stubborn to come true. On average, we lose around 50 and 100 hairs a day, without even noticing. During the Autumn, we may notice this increase, but that’s normal. As well as adjusting any tight styling regimes, reduce dragging your hairbrush through the knots and keeping on top of your diet (yes, diet is the word here for our hair too! A lack of vitamin D & iron can increase hair loss), We would recommend trying our favourite prevention products;Phyto Treatments Phytolium 4 Chronic Thinning Hair TreatmentOur Price £32.95 save 28% off RRP

Nanogen Hair Thickening Treatments Shampoo 240ml Our Price £7.95

Nioxin 3D Intensive Care Night Density Rescue 70mlOur Price £26.95 save 33% off RRP

#3 Condition

The importance of a great conditioner is completely underrated. Even though we love a good hair cleanse, AKA shampoo, some can strip the ‘soft and silky’ feel from our lovely strands and leave the hair feeling vulnerable. Conditioner is the last protection that we put into our hair in the shower and potentially avoids having to bring out the Tangle Teezer. This Autumn, why not leave your conditioner on for an extra couple of minutes in the shower to give your locks some extra smooth attention?

Take the chop

Autumn is the time of year where we can be selfish without feeling guilty. The kids are back to school, the Christmas lists have not been received just yet and who needs a better excuse to get an early night once the clocks go back? Time to repair and rejuvenate, it’s the perfect time to make a change.

It can be a huge decision to have anything more than two inches cut from your hair, but we’ve got you. Our top 5 favourite shortcuts allow your hair a fresh start as we enter Autumn. Just take these photos to your salon and show them your new found love:

The Pixie; Could you imagine missing your morning alarm and waking up 15 minutes before work? This Pixie look buys you hours of time in your busy day. P.s. the perfect look for showing off warm cosy scarves as the lower temperatures greet us.

The Lixie; here at allbeauty we feel that the common question of“Do you think I will suit a short look’”  or  “I think my face is too round for short hair’”  has more to do with your state of mind than the shape of your face. This hairstyle is personal to you, and that’s all that matters. Efficient and sexy, the Long Pixie makes a statement.

The Shob; the short bob means business. It’s empowering and exciting to make a change. We can still tie our hair up for the gym and then let it loose on the work Thursday night drinks. This style gives you the best of both worlds.

The Lob; Say goodbye to blow drying your hair for hours. From personal experience at allbeauty, the long bob has received lots of great feedback. Quick and easy to style. Healthier & thicker hair? Yes please. The ‘good couple of inches’ The usual request if we are looking for a ‘healthy chop’ or it’s normally ‘as little as possible’ when trying to maintain. Sometimes we have to bite the bullet and make that change for the good of our hair. Remember; no matter how short you go, it’s not a permanent change.

Want to do something incredible?

Donate your hair to The Little Princess Trust. With the stylist guidelines that can be downloaded here, we can help ensure you meet the accepted minimum length of 7”/17cm. Think about it- you could put a smile back on a young person’s face today. Repair, rejuvenate and reflect on how we can make a change.

Here at allbeauty our Product and Image Administrator, Maggie Lowe, has taken the plunge and will be donating her long locks to Little Princess Trust. Follow her story here…

These Are The 2019 London Fashion Week Hair Trends You NEED To Know About

We’ve teamed up with Official Haircare Product Providers label.m to bring you some of our favourite hair trends from London Fashion Week 2019!

Proffessional haircare brand label.m is THE Official Haircare Provider of London Fashion Week, so we’ve teamed up with the experts to bring you our top three looks from this year’s LFW runway, PLUS all you need to know to recreate the looks at home. Who says fashion stays on the runway?! Check out our favourite looks below:

1. The Messy Bun Is Back

Not that it ever really left, but with all its variations it’s been a while since we’ve seen a messy bun that wasn’t teamed with PJS and a lazy Sunday morning… The perfect compliment to the  colourful beading and embroidery seen at Tata Naka, International Artistic Director and British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Cos Sakkas was inspired by the styles of 60s and 80s supermodels to create these messy yet eloquent buns.

To create this look, Cos used label.m Texturising Volume Spray to create height, followed by label.m Hairspray to set the look:

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3

Step 1: Gather hair into a high ponytail and use label.m Texturizing Volume Spray around the surface and edge

Step 2: Pull the ponytail upwards and loosely secure with elastic, then drop down towards the crown to create texture and pin in place.

Step 3: Structure the hair to form a messy bun and pull out strands around the hair line and nape of the neck to create texture.

2. Top Knots Are Top Of The List

Another look usually associated with lounging around on the sofa watching Netflix on the sofa, the top knot has had a utilitarianupgrade from stylist Indira Schauwecker where natural twisted knots complimented Paul Costelloe’s striking military-inspired looks.

Step 4

Step 1: Depending on hair texture apply Extra Strong Mousse  throughout hair in sections and blow dry upwards using a grooming brush to smooth.

Step 2: Combing the hair up to the top of the head brushing through to smooth ponytail. Apply hairspray for grip and using a fine comb to create shape but not to make perfect giving a really effortess look.

Step 3: Tie elastic firmly to secure the ponytail. Using a tail end comb to loosen so making the silhouette more natural looking and enhancing texture around hairline.

Step 4: Spray label.m Texturising Volume Spray into ponytail and wrap around the top of head deliberately leaving the ends out. Pin to secure and add a small amount of label.m Hairspray to finish.

3. Soft Waves Are All The Rage

With the the designer’s approach to minimalism in mind, Indira and the TONI&GUY session team created soft, miminalist waves for the fifth season i-am-chen runway show. Romantic yet effortless, soft waves offer an elegantly classic base for colourful hair accessories featured  to bring fun and a light-heated spirit to the audience.

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4

Step 1: Apply label.m Extra Strong Mousse and blow-dry smooth section-by-section with a grooming brush.

Step 2: Use  hairspray and take wider sections for the creation of deep waves. Taking a small tong on each section – wrap the hair tightly around the barrel for up to eight – 10 seconds. Release – then hold in place with section clips.

Step 3: Gently brush back the hair section by section – pushing in one direction, and then using the tong to almost indent the waves with the comb held parallel to form the deep waves. Apply a little label.m Shine Mist along the length of the hair as you go.

Step 4: In contrast to the dry texture of the waves – liberally spritz the top only with Shine Mist for a distinct high shine appearance. Set with Hairspray.

If, like us, you’re obsessed with the beach-y soft waves look, you’ll love this tutorial from MOROCCANOIL. Quick and easy, they show you how to get the hottest hair trend of the summer:

  1. Before you start, cleanse and condition the hair with your favorite Moroccanoil Shampoo & Conditioner. We love Extra Volume Shampoo & Condition to give the hair maximum lift and texture whilst nourishing the hair.
  2. Apply 2 – 3 of pumps of Moroccanoil Original Treatment to mid lengths and ends and distribute using your fingers.
  3. Apply Moroccanoil Root Boost directly to the root area in diagonal sections moving around the head – distribute the product using a paddle brush or comb.
  4.  Blow Dry using your fingers lifting the hair at the roots to create maximum volume.
  5.  Section your hair into 4 sections – 2 either side – just behind the ear and two sections at the back from the crown into the nape.
  6. Take horizontal sections and mist with Luminous Hairspray Medium, using a large barrel wand place the section of hair into the barrel 2 inches from the top of the section. Now wrap your hair around the barrel and away from the face leaving the last 3-4 inches out as shown. Continue in horizontal sections for both sides and then move in to back sections using the same technique.
  7. Using a paddle brush, gently brush the set waves to soften.
  8. For added texture, spray Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray into mid lengths whilst lifting the hair. Apply 4 pumps of Moroccanoil Mending Infusion to ends for the perfect finish.

Bonus treatment: use Moroccanoil Hydrating Mask Light to deep treat the hair when washing. This can be used once a week to maintain moisture and protein levels in the hair.

This is a great example of a beard and haircut combination. There’s no reason not to wear this look at any age, we think it’s pretty timeless. To style you need a product that will hold but allow movement. We recommend Label M Power Paste or Fudge Matte Hed.

This younger hairstyle looks great with grey hair and is pretty hard to get wrong! Use a styling product that allows reworking so you can refresh the look any time. You can’t go wrong with Label M Complete Matt Wax.

This tattooed silver fox is a 48 year old Italian model, but his style is for anyone. Short sides, long on top, it works with or without the beard. Maintain grey hair with a dedicated men’s grey hair shampoo.

Ok here’s a tamer version, but we hope you can see the idea. Grooming just works with absolutely any hair colour. If you are sporting a beard, make sure you treat it with beard oil or pomade to condition and style. You can shop our selection of beard care right here.

If in doubt keep it short. Some messy texture wax is all you need to keep this style looking great, choose a product like best selling TIGI Manipulator.

Tips For Grey Hair
It may surprise you to know that once hair goes grey it does change. Hair becomes more wiry and coarse and frequently drier than before. In addition, you can often see yellow or brassy tones that may not have been there before. To keep grey hair manageable make sure you use a dedicated shampoo that softens and brightens. Many dedicated grey shampoos also contain subtle lightening products that gradually take out yellow tones. Used over a period of time, you’ll definitely see the colour of your hair getting sharper. You might also find some products contain violet or purple tones – don’t be surprised! Violet is a great compliment to white or grey hair and can give it a subtle shine. To see our range of dedicated men’s grey hair shampoo just click HERE. For hair that’s almost completely white, we love the White Hot Hair range.

These are our favourite men’s hairstyles for grey hair but which is your favourite? Let us know in the comments below.
