Making your hair colour last at home – With Shu Uemura

Summertime is great, the temperature is rising, we can work on our tans and wear those fabulous summer clothes we’ve been storing all winter, maybe even take the plunge and get those summer sun-kissed highlights you’ve been dreaming of?

Summer is a feel-good season, sitting in the sun is great for relaxation, stress relief and mental well-being, we also get our fix of vitamin D, which has numerous benefits to our bodies.

However, summer can also wreak havoc on our coloured hair. The sun can weaken your hair’s protein structure and strip the hair of its natural moisture, causing dry and brittle hair, not a great mix for coloured hair, which relies on healthy locks to stop that unwanted colour fade.

Luckily, Shu Uemura Art of Hair are experts in the art of making your hair colour last. The ultimate in avant-garde luxury, Shu Uemura Art of Hair fuses unique natural ingredients with trailblazing science, and the experience of the world’s most inspired hairstylists, to offer women everywhere the absolute artistry of beautiful hair.

Their Colour Lustre range is specifically designed to preserve and intensify your hair colour at home, preventing that fade and keeping your colour locked and lasting.

Explore the Shu Uemura Art of Hair method for prolonging your colour and keeping it vibrant all year round:

Don’t wash coloured hair too often

To prevent water from washing away your vibrant colour, the answer is simple: Wash your hair less often. To retain those natural oils that help condition your colour-treated hair, shampoo just two or three times per week, and never more than every other day. This will help your colour last longer and help maintain health in your coloured hair.

Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Lustre
Dry Cleaner For Colour-Treated Hair 136g

Try Colour Lustre Dry Cleaner for colour treated hair, this 2-in-1 Dry shampoo gently cleanses by absorbing oils and impurities at the roots while moisturising dry lengths and ends. Unlike other dry shampoos, the formula has translucent micro-fine powders that absorb oil without leaving any residue or unwanted texture behind.

Great for second-day hairstyles, post-gym touch-ups and workweek refreshes.

To use: Create a part on dry hair. Shake well before use. Spray dry shampoo 8-10 inches from roots. Repeat on multiple sections as desired. Brush or use fingers to distribute product evenly.

Protect against Heat

Everyday heat styling causes structural damage to the protein of the hair and denaturing occurs. What that means is that the proteins open up, opening the proteins weakens the core structure of hair which is why applying heat protectant is so important, try Colour Lustre Brilliant Glaze Thermomilk, highly concentrated in Refining Lipids, this lightweight, nourishing leave-in milk for colour-treated hair provides guilt-free heat styling and all-day shape memory while protecting from colour fade. Imparts a vibrant, glazed shine and a polished touch.

To use: On towel-dried hair, apply a small amount evenly from mid-lengths to ends. Comb through for even distribution. Section hair and blow-dry section by section from roots to ends. Do not rinse.

Preserve Colour

Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Shampoo transforms into a rich, abundant foam that lathers quickly and offers easy rinsing while protecting from colour washout and respecting the balance of the scalp. Prevents colour from fading, protects the hair fibre and balances the scalp’s natural oils. The shampoo’s refining lipids mimic the hair’s natural protective varnish to insulate the cortex from water and other external stress factors. Contains Musk Rose Oil known for its inherent healing properties and Goji Berry Extract which helps protect the hair from oxidation and colour fade.

Heatwave Hair Hacks with KMS

REDUCE FRIZZ and avoid that dreaded humidity hair

As temperatures rise and humidity levels rocket, we all risk falling victim to dreaded ‘humidity hair’ disasters. The main cause of frizz and flyaways during summer is lack of moisture in our hair, meaning the cuticles of our hair dry out and create this ‘frizzy’ result.

Here’s the good news – you can tame that frizz in three easy steps!

KMS are a professional hair brand with a range of products organised into three easy steps – START, STYLE and FINISH. By using the TAMEFRIZZ Start, Style, Finish regime you can reduce frizz by up to 100%.

STEP 1: START WITH A GOOD BASE

It is important to understand the cause of frizz so you can take the right steps to combat your unruly locks. Frizz is caused by humidity, which is the level of moisture in the air. If you have dry hair, it is more inclined to soak up that moisture from the air causing the hair cuticles to expand and making the hair look fluffy or frizzy.

KMS TameFrizz SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER will give you the perfect base to fight the frizz. With the innovative technology of AHA structure complex, this shampoo and conditioner combo is your first step in frizz reduction. Lactic Acid and Malic Acid work to support the internal reconstruction of the hair while Polyquaternium-10 evens out the hair surface. TAMEFRIZZ conditioner not only combats frizz but also detangles and conditions the hair.

For added humidity protection, use TAMEFRIZZ SMOOTHING RECONSTRUCTOR. This mask works to revive and soften even the most deeply stressed or overworked hair. The formula is light enough not to weigh down hair, but hydrating enough to tame frizz. Just apply the product evenly to shampooed hair and leave on for 3-5 minutes then rinse.

STEP 2: STYLE
USE ANTI-FRIZZ STYLING PRODUCTS TO BUILD A FULL HUMIDITY CONTROL REGIME

KMS TAMEFRIZZ SMOOTHING LOTION reduces frizz during the drying process. Work the lotion through towel-dried hair and blow-dry or air dry. This product is made up of innovative shaping blends that are key to eliminating flyaways and static. Polyquaternium-37 eliminates flyaways while Hydroxypropyl Guar/Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride smoothes and reduces frizz.

STYLISTS TIP:  Our stylists recommend sleeping with a silk hair wrap. This tip will protect your hair from friction that is caused by cotton pillowcases – Using silk to protect the hair will not only fight frizz but also reduce breakage.

STEP 3: FINISH
LOCK IN YOUR STYLE WITH ANTI HUMIDITY HEROES

To finish off the frizz taming process use KMS TAMEFRIZZ DE-FRIZZ OIL. You don’t need to worry about this oil leaving your hair greasy or flat as it is made up of a lightweight non-greasy formula that absorbs instantly. Apply a few drops to dry hair in order to smooth and seal the cuticle. Thanks to the Dimethiconol Polymer, TAMEFRIZZ  DE-FRIZZ OIL provides frizz and humidity control for up to THREE DAYS!

KMS FINISH
TameFrizz De-Frizz Oil 100ml

Styling Tip: Lock in your look with Anti-humidity hairspray in order to shield your hair from frizz.

KMS FINISH
HairStay Anti-Humidity Seal 150ml

KMS HAIRSTAY ANTI-HUMIDITY SEAL acts like an umbrella for the hair, shielding it from humidity and frizz for up to 72 hours! Spray 10-12″ (25-30 cm) from dry hair as a final seal against humidity.

Bringing The Party To You: Home Festival Hacks

Festivals might be cancelled, but summer definitely isn’t! If you’re missing out on your festival fix this year, we’re here with plenty of tips, ideas and inspiration to get the full experience from the comfort of your home.

If you live alone, party like no-ones watching! Or, if you have kids in tow, get them involved! After all, music education is still education, and what better way to introduce kids to festivals than by throwing one in your own backyard!?

Read on for your total At-Home Festival Guide…

Getting The Look

Festival style is all about the effortless hippie/boho look, so dig out anything tasselled, crocheted or cropped, and live your best life.

Getting all dressed up is essential for any festival, even if you won’t be leaving your postcode. Embrace all things colour, glitter and fun – kids, in particular, will love joining in for this part. Here’s the list of must-have items for festival fun.

Sun Protection

It might be tempting to forego the SPF when you know you’ll be dipping in and out of the house, but this should really be a non-negotiable. Protecting your skin from the sun’s UV rays is one of the single most important ways you can prevent premature ageing and pigmentation. So, stock up on your summer essentials and stay safe.

Be Bold

Colour, colour, colour. Bright, bold colours take centre stage, so make sure you’ve got everything you need to nail the look. Everyone needs at least one vibrant eyeshadow palette in their collection, precisely for moments like this! If your eyeshadow options err on the side of beige, check out one of these great options…

If you haven’t heard of Jeffree Star, he’s an American makeup artist taking Youtube by storm. Known for his love of bright colours, the Beauty Killer eyeshadow palette will make a great addition to your festival look.

Another fabulous option is the Makeup Addiction Sinful Eyes Palette, which you can pick up with a 36% discount in our Outlet.

Highlighter

Whether you’ve had a good dose of summer sun already or have been stuck indoors, highlighter is a great way to get the sunkissed, glowing look that is synonymous with festivals. There are endless Youtube tutorials to help you master the look without looking too shiny. Try the Endless Glow Highlighter by BareMinerals which has just the right amount of shimmer and comes in four awesome shades.

Festival Hair

Loose, natural waves are popular for good reason, they’re low maintenance, add shape to the face and look gorgeous. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, it’s all about colour when it comes to getting the festival look.

Try label.m Mini Powder Spray, which includes four stunning colours that spray on and wash off. Ideal for getting the kids involved, or to spice up your own look. Or, if you want something equally fabulous, but a little more glam, take a look at the Affinage Party Mode Pack which includes an anti-frizz mirror shine spray, blow dry cream and, most importantly, a 3 in 1 body glitter kit. Shine, girl! Shine!

Choose A Festival Fragrance

While it’s by no means a necessity (perfume certainly isn’t the smell you’d associate with sweaty, muddy festivals), why not add an extra element to you event with a boost of something scented.

We couldn’t leave this perfume off our list, after all, it has “festival” in it’s name – that’s always a good sign! Festival Vibes For Her by Hollister infuses tonka bean, goji berries, quince and bergamot into the ultimate perfume to wear to your at-home festival.

Another great fragrance that is worth a try is Reb’l Fleur by Rihanna. Coconut, vanilla, peach, plum – are you drooling yet? This one is perfect for warm summer days in the sunshine. And after all, is any festival really complete without a bit of Rihanna?

Setting The Scene

Speaking of Rihanna, line up the perfect soundtrack for HomeFest by digging out your old CDs and records, or take a more modern approach with Spotify or by streaming concert footage on Youtube. The best part of holding your own festival is that you choose the tracklist, no filler acts!

Make sure you have some marshmallows, burgers and your drink of choice at the ready to continue the festival vibes through the evening.

Of course, no festival is complete without a night spent sleeping under canvas, so set up your tent (or create an inside version) and snuggle down for a unique way to end the day. A word to the wise though, if you’re going to indulge in some outdoor camping, you might want to have this set on hand:

Honest Talk with Tigi – Recreate the salon feeling at home

Hairdressers and educators from the professional haircare brand TIGI are sharing their tips and tricks for keeping your hair healthy, vibrant and full of life while visits to the hairdresser are a no-go.

TIGI’s three top tips for keeping hair healthy at home:

• Choose the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type

• Treat your hair once a week

• Find an effortless product that makes you feel good

Tips from:

• Piero Gentile, TIGI UK Academy Creative Director

• Aaron Overton, TIGI Regional Education Specialist

• Lucy Hicks, TIGI Regional Education Specialist

• Katie Hartley, TIGI Regional Education Specialist

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type

Damaged hair

When hair is damaged, it is best to use a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically to help repair, strengthen and protect your hair.

Top tip for damaged coloured hair: If your hair is damaged, focus on repairing the damage first as unhealthy hair does not hold colour in the same way. First, use a repairing shampoo and conditioner, then move onto colour protection.

The first step to bringing lustre back to hair is ensuring you have the best-suited shampoo and conditioner.  If you use a lot of heat, try Bed Head Urban Antidotes Resurrection Shampoo and Conditioner Set – they are infused with repairing properties to help keep the hair strong and shiny.

Resurrection Tween Set: Shampoo 750ml & Conditioner 750ml

Brunettes and redheads

While visits to the salon for colour services are not possible, it is important to keep coloured hair nourished and help hair maintain its vibrant colour.

For those brunettes and redheads out there, Bed Head Colour Goddess is your miracle in a bottle.  Infused with sweet almond oil, coconut oil and vitamin E, the shampoo and conditioner help to keep the hair hydrated, maintain and enhance the colour vibrancy and keep your coloured hair looking salon fresh.

Tween Set: Shampoo 750ml & Conditioner 750ml

Top tip: make sure your water isn’t too hot when washing coloured hair and not to over-style using heat to maximise colour retention!

Blonde hair

Maintaining blonde hair colour in between salon visits can be tough, so finding a professional purple shampoo that enhances cool tones and banishes brassy and yellow tones is essential.

Top tip: be sure to use a high-quality, moisturising violet shampoo to avoid dehydrating and over toning hair, making it appear dull.

To properly maintain cooler blonde colours, use a moisturising violet-based shampoo – Catwalk Fashionista Blonde is perfect. With a violet pigment, which neutralises unwanted brassiness and maintains the blonde colour you have, it will not overtone the ends, which can make it difficult for your hairdresser to balance the colour.

Bed Head Dumb Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner is great for getting specifically blonde hair back to its brilliant best. It is a protein-containing shampoo and conditioner that will help eliminate hair breakage.

Top tip: The blonde conditioner doubles as a reconstructive treatment when left on for 5 minutes once a week

Treat your hair once a week

While haircuts are out of the question, retaining nourished and strong hair is really important. Deep conditioning and repair treatments are great to use once a week for a hair treat!

Treatment for coloured hair

It is important to improve the hair’s ability to hold onto colour from dying. Use the Bed Head Colour Goddess Hair Mask that was designed specifically for coloured hair. Containing a blend of an antioxidant, vitamin and pro-vitamin, this hair mask gives hair intense moisture and deep conditioning which helps hair maintain its electrifying colour.

For intensive damage repair

Damaged hair can be caused by chemicals, heat and the environment. To give damaged hair a boost of repair and protection, use the Bed Head Resurrection Hair Mask. The hair mask coats the strands of hair to ensure moisture is kept in and the hair is protected.

Top tip: to help prevent frizz and increase shine, rinse off your hair mask with cold water

Prefer a leave-in treatment? Bed Head Ego Boost is a multi-functioning leave-in-conditioner. The deep conditioning treatment, with keratin, leaves the hair structure protected by forming a thin film on the hair, it conditions and moisturises hair, making hair softer and easier to comb through, and it fights frizz.

Top tip: to maximise volume, gently rough dry your hair after applying the thickening spray, then re-apply the products before blow-drying into shape!

Blow-drying at home tips

• Start with the difficult areas first, if you have a fringe, don’t leave it till last. It will dry on its own and will be a struggle to control by the time you have completed the rest of the blow-dry.

• Don’t try to blow dry using a brush straight from wet hair. Blast at least 70-80% of the moisture out first, take neat sections and try to use a medium heat.

• For smoother styles that don’t require volume, work with a paddle or a cushion brush, brush hair from side to side to create a neutral finish, this is called wrap drying.

• Finish hair with a shot of cool air to seal the result.

How to prolong your hair colour – with Pureology

We have all asked ourselves the question, how long might it be until our next salon appointment? If you have been wondering how to keep your hair colour lasting longer until your next salon visit, wait no longer.

From faded roots, to dull looking colour, Pureology has got your back! Maintain your hair colour vibrancy in between salon appointments with these top tips from Pureology expert hair educators.

Choose gentle cleansing formulas

Sulphates can be harsh on the hair and strip the hair causing colour fade. Opt for Zero sulphate products to keep your hair colour looking vibrant. Pureology, the #1 Professional Colour Care brand, uses products that are zero sulphate containing no nasties, using corn, coconut and sugar to gently cleanse the hair without stripping its colour.

Use a heat protectant

Regular use of heat tools without protection can damage the hair and affect its colour! By using a heat protectant with added colour protection you can maintain colour vibrancy, shine and healthy hair, leaving it looking and feeling better than ever. Try Pureology Pure Volume Style & Care Infusion, apply before blow drying for heat defense, touchable volume, body and discipline all at the same time.

Use hair masks and treatments

Keep your hair looking its best with a deep conditioning treatment to improve condition and colour vibrancy. Use a hair mask once a week so that your locks remain moisturised and hair colour stays bright. Try the Pureology Colour Fanatic Instant Deep Conditioning Mask, infused with an exclusive AntiFade Complex, this moisturising hair mask from Pureology is 100% vegan and penetrates strands to instantly restore, protect and strengthen. If your hair feels damaged and broken, reach for Pureology Strength Cure Superfood mask, formulated with keravis, ceramide and arginine to heal and repair damage.

Styling is key

Missing that fresh out of the salon shine? Use styling tools that enhance shine to keep the hair colour looking its best. Using a shine serum on the hair before blow drying can help create that silky and glossy texture you have been missing. Try Pureology Shine Max to create a reflective shine on even the dullest hair.

If all else fails, switch up your style or experiment with your hair parting and accessories!

Hair accessories are so on trend, and can enhance any hair look! Keep it colourful and experiment with different coloured hairbands or scrunchies for that 90s feel.

If hair accessories aren’t your thing, try changing your parting around, side parting, middle parting or even a zig-zag parting can really switch up your look.

South American Beauty

Get ready for carnival with these little-known ingredients and beauty secrets, straight from the rainforests of South America.

What do Sofia Vergara, Shakira and Gisele Bündchen all have in common – other than being drop-dead gorgeous? They all hail from South America. A continent rich in diversity, it encompasses twelve countries and an additional two territories, each with its own unique culture, traditions and of course, beauty secrets.

We’ve collated the best of these tips into one handy place, so you can discover what elements of a beauty routine are most important to women in South America, and what ingredients they use to get that gorgeous Amazonian look.

Natural Ingredients

Whether in bustling Rio de Janeiro or in rural Guyana, natural ingredients are at the heart of South American hair and skincare. Being home to some of the largest expanses of rainforest in the world, it’s hardly a surprise! The continent has an abundance of exotic fruits and seeds, many of which are used to create natural hair masks or applied to skin for hydration. The best part? Some brands you already know and love have begun to include these ingredients in their products, so you can try them for yourself!

Buriti oil is derived from the fruit of the moriche palm tree or “tree of life”, which grows in Brazilian rainforests. It is used for nourishing and repairing skin and hair, including treating skin conditions and burns.

Sacha Inchi oil comes from the seeds of the star-shaped sacha inchi fruit which have been grown by the indigenous people of Peru for thousands of years. High in omega-3 and containing vitamins E and A, sacha inchi oil is used to hydrate and protect skin and hair.

Amazonian white clay is harvested near the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil and has been used for centuries due to its exfoliating and detoxifying properties.

Avocados grow all over South America (envious!) and are often used in DIY hair treatments or skin masks. Don’t fancy getting messy? Check out our favourite avocado beauty products below.

Haircare

When it comes to South American beauty, women take their hair very seriously. Thick, luscious hair is a crown to wear proudly, and they use the nourishing ingredients that grow locally to enhance what nature gave them.

Using a hair mask at least once a week delivers moisture back into the hair, protecting it from the elements, taming frizz and adding shine. Buriti oil can also be used to this effect, and Aveda’s Dry Remedy range includes it as an active ingredient, so you can try it at home. Alternatively, the All Soft Mega range from Redken uses sachi inchi oil to hydrate dry and damaged hair.

Don’t have naturally straight hair but want to get those flawless South American locks? Most salons now offer the famous “Brazilian Blowout” treatment which combines keratin and heat to smooth hair and calm curls. But if you don’t want to pay salon prices, Novex has you covered. Their Brazilian Keratin range includes Brazilian keratin protein, so you can achieve the same look at a fraction of the price.

Skincare

Skincare plays a key part of the average beauty routine as women in South American tend to spend a lot of time outdoors and enjoy a warm climate for much of the year. Top priorities include moisturising skin products and SPF face creams. While we certainly have no shortage of either of those at allbeauty, here are a few skincare solutions that include one or more of the fantastic natural ingredients we highlighted earlier.

Nuxe Paris, Super Skin Repair Balm includes buriti oil, honey and five other botanical oils to improve complexion and reduce tight, dry skin.

Elemental Herbology, Cell Plumping Facial Moisturiser is a nourishing cream for dry and ageing skin which includes antioxidants and sacha inchi oil, among others, to deeply hydrate.

Lab Series for Men, Oil Control Clearing Solution includes Amazonian white clay in its ingredients, helping to reduce oily skin and keep blemishes at bay.

Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream combines the rich moisturising properties of avocado and shea butter to restore moisture to hands.

Makeup

In general, things are kept super simple where makeup is concerned. With flowing hair and bronzed, flawless skin, the need for makeup falls by the wayside! Instead, most South American women swear by all-in-one products such as a good quality BB cream, a hydrating lip balm and a dark, elongating mascara.

However, that’s not to say that it’s a totally low-maintenance look. The one area where time and money is most definitely spent, is on nail care. Most women will see a nail technician regularly and invest in bold colours, nail extensions and eye-catching nail art. We all love to include a pop of personality in our beauty routine after all!

From oils from the deepest corners of the rainforest, to clay from the banks of the Amazon, South America holds a wealth of beauty secrets within its borders. Give one a try and see what you’ve been missing out on.

Scandinavian Beauty

What keeps Scandinavian women looking effortlessly beautiful and age-defyingly graceful? A simple skincare routine.

Scandinavian people are well-known for the way they prioritise contentment and wellness. In fact, they even have a word for it “hygge”. The hygge mindset has received a lot of attention over the last few years, particularly in home and lifestyle magazines, as we all look for ways to make our lives cosier and more comfortable. But hygge extends far beyond home decor, it’s a way of life for Scandinavians, even down to their pared-back beauty routines.

The norm when it comes to beauty revolves around functionality and results. Beauty regimes value quality over quantity and less is most certainly more. If you’ve ever wondered how those women from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland get their hair and skin looking quite so effortlessly flawless, read on for the inside secrets.

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

With average winter temperatures often dropping below freezing, keeping skin hydrated plays a key role in Scandi-Beauty routines. Moisture can quickly be lost in harsh winds and freezing temperatures, so to prevent dehydrated and chapped skin, Scandinavian women have adopted an effective yet simple skincare routine.

A targetted serum is applied daily to hydrate the skin at a cellular level. Next, a rich, nourishing day cream is used to lock in moisture and protect against the elements. Throughout the day, many women will also top up their skin with a hydrating mist to prevent any additional dryness. And during winter, sheet masks become a twice-weekly investment in that dewy, youthful skin we all so admire.

Quality Ingredients

Most of us would love a skincare routine that includes as few steps as possible, but the Scandinavians have it down to an art. Prioritising quality ingredients, they achieve the best results from the least possible products. Scandinavian skin and hair products will often include glacier water, cloudberries or omega oils. These three ingredients are highly valued for their beneficial properties.

Glacier water is believed to be the cleanest water in the world. Along with it being one of the main sources of drinking water, many skincare products also use it in their formulation.

Omega oils are a popular addition to skincare, but are also an integral part of the typical diet which is naturally high in fish.

Cloudberries are a rare berry found predominantly in Scandinavia. Rich in vitamins A, B, C, and E, one cloudberry contains around 4x more vitamin C than an orange.

The Finnish brand Lumene utilises many of these ingredients, why not try them for yourself?

Keeping it Cool

One Scandi-Beauty tip that you can easily integrate into your own routine is the power of cold water. While heat is great for opening your pores – that’s where the sauna comes into its own – it’s important to close them again. Coldwater restricts your pores and blood vessels, making it the perfect final step when cleansing. After finishing giving skin a thorough cleanse with a Swedish Foreo cleansing brush, many Scandinavians will regularly finish their shower or face cleanse with a burst of cold water.

Healthy Hair

While cold water in the shower may not be everyone’s idea of fun, there is an alternative when it comes to achieving shiny, healthy hair. Sachajuan is a Swedish haircare company loved by Scandinavians thanks to their range of highly effective hair products. With each product tailored specifically for the complex needs of different hair types, you’re sure to find something you love.

Beauty That Radiates

Many women from Nordic countries explain that the secret to their complexion is a love of the great outdoors. Those who live in Scandinavian countries traditionally spend a lot more time outside than their British counterparts and its believed that the fresh air and exercise plays a part in their healthy appearance. In summer, the daylight hours are long, so a good SPF facial cream of at least 50 is vital in skincare.

Minimalist Makeup

The passion for quality over quantity comes back into play when we look at typical Scandinavian makeup. For daily wear, most women opt for a simple lined eye and a pop of lip colour. Foundation is often dismissed as instead, there is a preference for a more natural look.

Whether you’re ready to take a leaf from the Scandi-Beauty book and ditch the foundation, or are ready to brave the cold water at the end of your shower, there’s something we can all learn from our nordic neighbours. Why not browse our full range of Scandinavian products and see what works for you?

Australian Beauty

The epitome of sun-kissed, natural beauty, Australians know what’s important when it comes to skincare.

The land of sand, surf and sunshine, Australia has a reputation for it’s glamorous and carefree inhabitants. If you’ve ever wondered how to get that effortless beachy look, keep reading to find out the secrets of Aussie-Beauty.

Daily SPF, Always

It’s no secret that Australia has more than its fair share of sunshine. In summer, temperatures can get as high as 40℃, and have even been as high as 50℃! With that in mind, effective skin protection is an absolute must.

Most Aussie women attribute their age-defying complexion to their commitment to using a high SPF skin cream separate from their moisturiser every day, regardless of how bright the sun is shining. For the face, SPF50+ is required, both to avoid ageing and the dreaded sunglasses tan line! And in general, before leaving the house it’s ingrained in Australians to apply sun protection to all exposed skin, using a sunscreen lotion of at least SPF30 to avoid the risk of long-term skin damage.

While we might not be blessed with the same climate as Australia, protecting our skin is just as important. In fact, we have the same number of daylight hours in summer as many areas of Australia – albeit with quite a few degrees difference in temperature!

And of course, with the need for a daily dose of SPF, good cleansing is a must…

A Thorough Cleansing Routine

With the combination of salt air, SPF, makeup and sweat, giving your skin a thorough cleanse at the end of each day is a core part of the Aussie-Beauty skincare routine. For most, a hot cloth cleansing is the technique of choice, using a muslin cloth to help buff away any dead skin and dirt. A fantastic product for this is the Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm, which includes a dual-sided muslin and microfibre cloth to both cleanse and exfoliate.

An alternative method favoured by many Australian women is to use coconut oil in place of a cleansing balm. This moisturising oil removes makeup with ease and nourishes the skin at the same time. However, it is important to bear in mind that coconut oil is comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores, so we suggest using with care, particularly if you are prone to acne.

Natural Ingredients

Coconut oil is only one of a host of natural ingredients found in Aussie-Beauty skincare. The aboriginal people of Australia have been using the country’s native plants for centuries for their healing and moisturising properties. Eucalyptus and tea tree are two common ingredients, both growing wild all over Australia.

Eucalyptus is an anti-inflammatory, decongestant and deodorant, it also possesses antiseptic qualities.

Tea tree oil is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and has antifungal properties.

Together, these multifaceted ingredients are used in everything from acne treatments, to dandruff shampoos. There is also the acclaimed Australian Pink Clay, which is a combination of red and white clays and is rich in silica. This clay is another ingredient which has been used for hundreds of years, thanks to its detoxifying and hydrating properties.

Beach Bum Vibes

Australian women have that sun-kissed-sea-tousled look down to an art. After all, swimming in the ocean is a national pastime and one which naturally results in that beachy look. Many women go so far as to fill up a spray bottle with seawater so they can spritz their hair at home and have just-stepped-off-the-beach hair any day of the week.

While taking a dip in the English sea may not be high on your to-do list, you can achieve that same look at home with a sea spray hair product designed to replicate those tousled waves. For bronzed skin at any time of year, our range of self-tanning solutions will make sure you look sun-kissed, not tangoed.

Hair and Skin Hydration

All that sunshine and seawater can be incredibly drying for both skin and hair, so hydration is the secret to maintaining a healthy glow.

After spending time at the beach, a nourishing hair mask brings oils back into the hair, stopping it from becoming dehydrated and splitting. Better yet, Australia’s warm sun means that you can sit outside to make the most of the heat, which gives the hair mask even better results. At home, you can replicate this by combining your favourite hair mask with a blast of the hairdryer, using the heat to speed up absorption and hydration.

For the skin, an Aussie-Beauty tip is to apply a rich moisturiser overnight, so that you wake up with a plump, nourished complexion. Particularly during summer, when the skin is at more risk of dehydration, a weekly face mask is also used to prevent chapping or dryness.

Whether you’d looking for a night cream to wake-up looking refreshed, or want to try a leave-in conditioner that Australians swear by, you’ll find everything you need at allbeauty. As stockists of the A’kin range of Australian skin and hair care, we have all your Aussie-Beauty needs covered.

How To Tips From Chris

About Chris

Chris Pearson, one of our senior stylists, has been in the hairdressing industry for over 35 years. Some of his career highlights have included working with Vidal Sasoon as well as an array of other talented stylists. His work has even been on the cover of Hairdressers’ Journal. He has been a long standing member of the allbeauty team specialising in colour techniques and cutting. As a keen surfer and paddle boarder, Chris is often out on the water. With the recent corona outbreak, he has been finding this a great way to social distance whilst unwinding and relaxing but is always thinking of his skincare/ haircare at the same time.

Skincare

If you are leaving the house as part of essential exercise, or maximising the opportunity of being able to take lunch breaks in the garden, Chris recommends a high SPF to protect your skin. Caudalie SPF 50 High Protection Anti Wrinkle Face care is a fantastic product that boosts an ocean protect label as it has no nasty parabens or preservatives such as oxybenzone or Octinoxate that damage our skin and our oceans.

Haircare

For exposure to seawater and salt air, Chris makes sure to use a leave in conditioner to protect his curls. Kérastase Discipline leave in spray conditioner is one of his top recommendations for unruly hair! When home he recommends a good smoothing shampoo followed by a mask to nourish his  locks (especially after having been in the sea)

1) Kérastase Discipline Bain Fluidealiste Smooth- In-Motion Shampoo

2) Kérastase Maskeratine Smooth-In-Motion Masque

3) Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curling Gel soufflé

4) To style and hold the curls use Redken Ringlet Shape Perfecting Lotion
