allbeauty & The Little Princess Trust

This Autumn, one special member of our allbeauty team has made an inspirational change by donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust. We have had the pleasure to travel with Maggie through her journey and ask all the questions before she takes the chop.

1inch? 2inch? 3inch? Read More…

#1 Tell us a little bit about yourself, what do you do at allbeauty?

My name’s Maggie, I started at allbeauty in 2016 as a Christmas temp in Customer Services, then moved up to Stock Management after nearly a year where I edit product images.

#2 You’re chopping off your hair and donating it, that’s amazing! Could you share insight on why you are doing this?

It’s a bit of a weird reason as my inspiration was bald before the cancer! My Papa was diagnosed with cancer several years ago and he was always so strong, he didn’t complain once and was always so kind and patient even when you could see him in the worst pain. It got me thinking about how I would handle being in his situation and in all honesty, the thought of losing my hair would be terrifying. Thinking about what he went through happening to a child, and on top of that losing their hair is heartbreaking and I just wanted to help.

#3 How long have you been growing your hair?

About a year and a half!

#4 What products have you been using?

I use a mask about once a week (sometimes every other week if I’m feeling lazy), I love the TIGI Bed Head Urban Antidotes Resurrection Treatment Mask. I have naturally slightly dry hair and it feels so silky after using this. Every day I use the Macadamia Natural Oil  Healing Oil Treatment, and sometimes if I know I’m washing my hair the next day I’ll slather on a load before bed.

#5 Do you know how much hair you are donating?

The minimum donation is 7 inches and I should be donating around 10 inches. I would love to grow it again after this and donate even more!

#6 What happens when you donate?

Donated hair is sent to a special factory it’s hand knotted into a wig base, and a single wig can contain up to 10 different donations. The hair is never coloured or treated, so it is always a high quality finish and they are able to offer a range of different natural colours and lengths so suit every individual. A family can then request a wig and can visit an approved salon to choose a wig and have it styled.

#7 How do you feel about donating your hair?

I’m excited to be helping someone out there feel a bit better during such a difficult period in their lives, but at the same time it’s so sad that any one has to go through this in the first place. Cutting the hair off itself is the easy bit, I’m totally fine with that!

#8 What hairstyle are you going for next and where will you be getting it cut?

The ultimate trim! Nothing fancy, just chopping it off around the shoulder so that I can grow it again without having to wait for layers to grow out or anything. The allbeauty salon in Guernsey, the staff there are so and I trust them fully with my locks!

#9 What the first thing you are going to do with your new hair style?

Try and learn how to style short hair!

#10 What’s your advice for someone that is thinking about getting their haircut and donating it?

Just do it, it will grow back!

COMING SOON 28th SEPTEMBER:  Maggie takes the chop

Beat The Breakage

When you take a look in the mirror, say goodbye to the sad memories that summer is over and say hello to the new Autumn you. Repair and rejuvenate with allbeauty.

Summer, gone for now but never forgotten. Now to move onto the next chapter and welcome Autumn with open arms. But sometimes that can be tricky when we are suffering from a couple of the disturbances summer has cooked up. Yes, it may have caused a couple of poorly heads the morning after the BBQ’s in the garden or encouraged more freckles to appear than we would have ideally chosen however, we cannot forget the damage the sun can cause us, especially to our hair. We all know that U.V Rays and direct sunlight can have a huge impact on our skin but occasionally we forget the damage it causes to our hair.

Damages

Damage to our hair can be brought on by the core four;

  • Heat
  • Chlorine
  • Salt water
  • Sun exposure

If you notice that your hair has;

  • Turned brittle (a bit like an old twig)
  • Gone a little dry (lack of natural oils)
  • Prone to breakage (just like your old vintage china tea cup)
  • Has decided to fall out (childhood memories of me and my sister)

We have a couple of ideas that could be perfect for you to beat the breakage…

#1 Mask It

The magic of hair treatments. Masks are an intense and powerful formula which sink into our hair and nurture each strand. For post-summer frail hair, smother a mask (after shampoo) when in the shower and leave for 3-5 minutes whilst you let the goodness go to work. Welcome back hydration and happy feeling hair again. Guess what’s even better? You can still smell the glorious scent of these hair masks when you are out of the shower, thanks to the long lasting fragrances. Why shouldn’t your hair smell great too?

#2 Growth

We would love to put a solution on our scalp and grow thick, bouncy and volumized  hair, just like Meghan Markle. But sometimes our dreams are too stubborn to come true. On average, we lose around 50 and 100 hairs a day, without even noticing. During the Autumn, we may notice this increase, but that’s normal. As well as adjusting any tight styling regimes, reduce dragging your hairbrush through the knots and keeping on top of your diet (yes, diet is the word here for our hair too! A lack of vitamin D & iron can increase hair loss), We would recommend trying our favourite prevention products;Phyto Treatments Phytolium 4 Chronic Thinning Hair TreatmentOur Price £32.95 save 28% off RRP

#3 Condition

The importance of a great conditioner is completely underrated. Even though we love a good hair cleanse, AKA shampoo, some can strip the ‘soft and silky’ feel from our lovely strands and leave the hair feeling vulnerable. Conditioner is the last protection that we put into our hair in the shower and potentially avoids having to bring out the Tangle Teezer. This Autumn, why not leave your conditioner on for an extra couple of minutes in the shower to give your locks some extra smooth attention?

Take the chop

Autumn is the time of year where we can be selfish without feeling guilty. The kids are back to school, the Christmas lists have not been received just yet and who needs a better excuse to get an early night once the clocks go back? Time to repair and rejuvenate, it’s the perfect time to make a change.

It can be a huge decision to have anything more than two inches cut from your hair, but we’ve got you. Our top 5 favourite shortcuts allow your hair a fresh start as we enter Autumn. Just take these photos to your salon and show them your new found love:

The Pixie; Could you imagine missing your morning alarm and waking up 15 minutes before work? This Pixie look buys you hours of time in your busy day. P.s. the perfect look for showing off warm cosy scarves as the lower temperatures greet us.

The Lixie; here at allbeauty we feel that the common question of“Do you think I will suit a short look’”  or  “I think my face is too round for short hair’”  has more to do with your state of mind than the shape of your face. This hairstyle is personal to you, and that’s all that matters. Efficient and sexy, the Long Pixie makes a statement.

The Shob; the short bob means business. It’s empowering and exciting to make a change. We can still tie our hair up for the gym and then let it loose on the work Thursday night drinks. This style gives you the best of both worlds.

The Lob; Say goodbye to blow drying your hair for hours. From personal experience at allbeauty, the long bob has received lots of great feedback. Quick and easy to style. Healthier & thicker hair? Yes please. The ‘good couple of inches’ The usual request if we are looking for a ‘healthy chop’ or it’s normally ‘as little as possible’ when trying to maintain. Sometimes we have to bite the bullet and make that change for the good of our hair. Remember; no matter how short you go, it’s not a permanent change.

Want to do something incredible?

Donate your hair to The Little Princess Trust. With the stylist guidelines that can be downloaded here, we can help ensure you meet the accepted minimum length of 7”/17cm. Think about it- you could put a smile back on a young person’s face today. Repair, rejuvenate and reflect on how we can make a change.

Here at allbeauty our Product and Image Administrator, Maggie Lowe, has taken the plunge and will be donating her long locks to Little Princess Trust. Follow her story here…

An hour a day just for you

As the days get shorter and the nights longer, it will soon be time to set our clocks back an hour. A tradition dating back to 1916 in the UK, resetting the time allowed farmers to get a headstart on the day, making the most of the limited daylight hours. But it isn’t only farmers who should get to reap the benefits of that extra hour, you can too.

At allbeauty we believe in the importance of “me time”, those all too often infrequent moments when we prioritise our own mental wellbeing over the humdrum of daily life.

This Autumn, we challenge you to make the most of gaining an hour by adding self-care to your daily routine. One hour a day, just for you.

It may sound like a pipe-dream, but taking an hour a day to show yourself some love is a habit that simply takes commitment on your part. It may be going to bed an hour early to enjoy a morning lie-in, or an early start to allow you to begin the day with a face mask and pedicure. Small changes can make a big difference to the quality of your daily life.

Need inspiration? Here are some of the allbeauty team’s top suggestions for how to spend your power-hour:

Sleep

It may not be the most indulgent or glamorous option on our list, but sleep tops the charts for one of the most beneficial ways to spend an extra hour. Whether it means preparing your lunch and outfit the evening before, or hitting the hay earlier, getting an additional hour of sleep will leave you feeling rested, refreshed, and ready to face the day.

Encourage the sandman with these sleep-inducing secret weapons.

Smile Makers

Ooh-er! Taking some time for self-discovery between the sheets is a fantastic way to prioritise your wellbeing. An orgasm releases oxytocin and dopamine, so you’ll not only be feeling great physically but will also reduce stress, relieve pain and boost your confidence. What better way to start the day?! Evening me-time comes with the added bonus of getting a better night’s sleep too! Win/win!

Pelvic Floor Trainer

It may not seem like the most thrilling way to indulge in self-care (especially after the previous suggestion), but taking time out of your day to do pelvic floor exercises is an investment in your future self. An estimated 3-6 million people in the UK experience urinary incontinence, minimise your risk with targeted pelvic floor training.

Candle and a Bath

The ultimate in relaxation, a steaming bath paired with a fragrant candle is an ideal way to end the day. Let the heat of the tub soothe your muscles and soften your skin, while an aromatic candle indulges your senses and promotes relaxation. Perfection!

.

Face Mask

We lead busy lives and our skin bears the brunt of that. Sensitivity, dehydration, sun-damage and exposure to pollution are all common factors that lead to lack lustre skin. With a range of face masks designed to target the full spectrum of dermatological complaints, treat yourself at least once a week, preferably in the company of a good book.

Foot mask / Pedicure

Feet are one of the most hardworking parts of our body but are rarely shown the care they deserve, particularly once the sandals have been packed away for the year. Show your tootsies some love with a weekly pedicure and foot mask available at allbeauty

Hair Treatments

As the clocks go back and Autumn arrives, our hair has a season of woolly hats, rain and wind to contend with. Treat your locks to regular moisturising hair masks to condition and strengthen your strands from root to tip.

Teeth Whitening

With the cooler weather, we all reach for a comforting tea or coffee a little more often. Don’t let your teeth suffer for it. With the iWhite Instant Teeth Whitening Kit, you can have a whiter, brighter smile in just 20 minutes a day. The question is, what will you do with your other 40 minutes of me-time?!

With such a wide range of ideas for prioritising your wellbeing, be sure to put the October 27th in your diary as the day your new self-care routine begins – you deserve it.

Olaplex How To + WIN Olaplex No 3 Worth £32!

If you’ve ever had your hair coloured at a salon, chances are your hairdresser has treated your hair with Olaplex. But what IS it and how does it work?

Olaplex has become something of an enigma. A household name for those that regularly visit their salon, you’ve probably even talked about it with your friends – “oh, my hairdresser uses Olaplex on my hair” – but in actual fact, few people understand what it actually is and what it actually does…

According to the brand, Olaplex is used in more than 800 thousand salons world-wide, and has been applied to almost 150 million lots of locks. It’s even getting a world tour!

Celebs swear by it too, with the likes of Drew Barrymore, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone crediting it to saving their hair from over-bleaching and frequent colour-change.

Olaplex range

The original bond builder

Developed by Dr. Eric Pressly and Dr. Craig Hawker, two of the world’s leading chemists, Olaplex is a three step system that works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal and mechanical damage.  Olaplex No. 1 and Olaplex No. 2 – the ‘professional use only – steps of the system, are mixed with color and used when rinsing colour from hair, respectively.

It not only protects the hair from the process to get a desired color, but it also prevents further damage, makes the hair strong, healthier, shinier, and also helps mend some of the previous damage.”

Lasting perfection at home

The final step in the Olaplex system, Olaplex No. 3 is a take home treatment. But it can also be used a stand-alone treatment for ‘virgin hair’ damaged by heat.  Not to be mistaken for a conditioner, No. 3 contains a small amount of the active ingredient bis-aminoprophyl diglycol dimaleate, which helps repair the broken disulfide bonds in the hair. Essentially, it ‘glues’ hair back together.

Olaplex

How to use Olaplex No. 3 at home

Designed to be used once a week, Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector should be applied to clean hair, free from product build up. Ideally, wash and towel dry hair before applying the treatment, though this isn’t necessary if your dry hair is clean. It will also take more product to fully saturate dry hair.

Step 1: Apply a generous amount to towel-dried hair and comb through

Step 2: Leave on for an absolute minimum of 10 minutes. But bare in mind that the longer you leave it on, the better the results. We like to leave ours on overnight and wash our hair as normal in the morning!

Step 3: Rinse, shampoo and condition hair as normal. Remember: it is not a conditioning treatment, OR a leave in treatment and is designed to be shampooed out of your hair.

Step 4: Repeat once a week in-between styling to help keep hair happy and healthy – voila!
