Want to fake a tan, but feeling a bit cautious? We understand. SPF (Sun Protection Factor):

We can’t stress this enough, whilst it’s important to ensure that your skin gets its daily dose of Vitamin D from outdoor exposure, applying products with Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is crucial for the protection of your skin against UV B rays. It is highly recommended that SPF is worn in summer with a minimum factor of 15 to ensure that your skin is protected – even on those overcast days.

Hair Removal

Whether you embrace it, tolerate it or loathe it, controlling hair growth in the summer can be time-consuming and repetitive. If you’re fed up of choosing between a myriad of neon disposable razors, expensive salon trips or shaving subscriptions, then this section is for you. From epilation to Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), handheld devices can provide more permanent solutions to your hair removal issues. Consider it a Summer Beauty investment!

What is IPL?

IPL uses light pulses to tackle hair pigmentation, which targets hair follicles at the root, discouraging growth. It can take between 6-8 sessions to be completely hairfree, but it offers you less maintenance in the long term.
IPL can reduce the risk of ingrown hairs. Double check that IPL is suitable for your hair and skin type, as pigmentation and melanin can impact product use.

Exploring Epilation:

Epilation is the act of removing multiple hairs at once using an electrical device (referred to as an Epilator). The Braun range of epilators catches even the smallest of hairs, meaning that it is a good alternative to waxing, where you have to allow for hair growth in between sessions.

We recommend exfoliating first to reduce the risk of ingrown hairs. To allow for an easier and more comfortable epilation, you can use the devices in the shower or bath.

Have your feet had a winter of hibernation in socks and tights? Now is the time to air those toes and schedule in a bit of pampering – especially if you’re planning on donning your best summer footwear. Let’s face it, summer is when you are most likely to try out those super impractical but oh so fancy wedges or go on an impromptu hike (let’s hope not in conjunction but, hey, we’ve all been there), so it’s a good time to make sure your feet are adequately cared for.

SmoothSkin Results – Here’s What Happened

This year, our Beauty Editor has been taking the SmoothSkin Challenge to get hair-free legs for summer. Here’s the verdict!

Our SmoothSkin results are in! To see more of our story, and discover how SmoothSkin works, begin here. To shop SmoothSkin at allbeauty click here.

Reader: I no longer shave my lower legs. Or wax. Or epilate.

I’ll let that sink in….

SmoothSkin Results
Eeek!! I can’t believe, looking back, that these were my lower legs!

I began this journey back in February. Back then, if I’d wanted to go bare-legged it meant daily shaving or tights. If I’m honest,  I could have tidied them up a bit come tea time.  But as of today, I’m happy to report my legs can be unveiled at a moment’s notice!!

Ok, let me just modify that a bit. Weekly treatments are necessary for the duration of the 12 week treatment process, to catch all the hairs in the growing phase. Part-way through my 12 week course, I developed a  rather charming cough that made bending over pretty uncomfortable. The result being, I missed around 3 weeks of treatment. Boo. Which means there’s a pesky cycle of hair that I skipped, and so I’m tackling that as and when it pops up. I’m also not perfect so I can see a few hairs here and there that I missed. But we’re talking bits here. All that’s needed is a quick flash of the SmoothSkin device to treat the hairs, and a 10 second flick-over with a razor. That’s all!!! I’m confident that by the end of summer, that will all be gone.

SmoothSkin Results – We Need To Talk About Pepper Spots

SmoothSkin Results
My leg close-up after no shaving for 3 weeks. Circled hairs have been missed and need treatment. Black bumps are pepper spots ie dead hairs working their way out of the body.

If you’re blessed with dark hair and pale skin, you’re probably familiar with those black spots all over your legs that show through, no matter how carefully you’ve shaved. Infuriating aren’t they?  Well, when you have IPL treatment, some of the hair is still under the skin at the time you treat it. And although the IPL system kills the hair, it’s still there, waiting to be pushed out as the skin renews itself. As a result, you get pepper spots ie black dots all over the legs. The only way to get rid of them is to wait for the skin to push them out, and speed this along with exfoliation. It’s a little annoying because although my legs are perfectly smooth, I still have black dots that mimic hairs. But the good news is they are reducing with weekly exfoliation and can be covered with fake tan or leg makeup. It’s important if you begin IPL treatment to be aware of this, and not to worry the treatment isn’t working. Just note that if the hair takes a long time to surface,  that means it’s dead. It’s just your body pushing it out. It’s also commonly reported that this happens less on the face, probably due to a regular skincare routine.

To show you what I mean, here’s a little video I made in 8x close up – don’t watch if you’re squeamish!!

There’s another issue I need to flag up, and that’s dead hair just sitting there (nice!!) Just because the hairs are dead, it doesn’t mean they want to fall straight out. So you will find, even after successful treatment, hairs can sit there for a while. The solution again is exfoliation and moisturising the skin. Here’s another video to show you what I mean – the hair looks very embedded but note how easily it glides out without pulling, and the frazzled (dead!) root:

SmoothSkin Results – What Now?

Well, I still have to catch those few bits I missed, so I’ll keep up with the weekly treatments on my lower legs. They’re super-quick and totally painless, and I can do them while I watch tv. I’ll also be tackling my upper legs and underarms, because why not? I’m super-impressed with SmoothSkin and would 100% recommend it to anyone. I’ve used other IPL devices with some results, but none were as quick or as effective as SmoothSkin. I’d say I started to see results from about 4 weeks, and really by the 6 week mark it was noticeable. My top tips if you’re using SmoothSkin:

  • Use a white pencil to make guide marks on your skin
  • Don’t miss treatments!! And keep going – the results will come
  • Use SPF on the area, while you’re treating it

IPL Hair Removal: Your Solution To Removing Excess Hair At Home

If IPL hair removal is something you’ve considered, we’re here to help. Discover how easy the Philips Lumea is to use and the results you can expect – all in the comfort of your own home.

Our Beauty Editor Claire has first-hand experience of IPL hair removal, from her days working with a skincare clinic specialising in this treatment.

IPL hair removalI first tried IPL hair removal almost 20 years ago, though at that time it was only available in salons and clinics. Not only did it come with a hefty price tag, it needed several salon visits over a period of time. Not great for anyone having facial treatment (scarves and dark glasses NOT a good look in summer!) It often meant taking time off work and being less than smooth at awkward moments. Fast forward to recent times and IPL is now available in the comfort of your own home. Leading the way are electrical experts Philips with the Lumea Prestige. I’ve had my Lumea for around 2 years now and I wouldn’t be without it!

IPL hair removal – how does it work?

IPL stands for ‘Intense Pulsed Light’. Here’s the science behind the treatment:

IPL hair removal guideIPL hair removal guideIPL hair removal guide
  • A split-second burst of light is flashed over the hair to be treated
  • The light is attracted to the melanin (colour) in the hair and travels down the hair to the root
  • Once it reaches the root, the light disables it. The hair falls out and regrowth is prevented
  • A special filter on the IPL machine ensures your skin and eyes are safe at all times

IPL hair removal – who can use it?

Almost everyone can use IPL hair removal. However, because the treatment works by being attracted to colour in the hair, there are a few exceptions.

You can use IPL hair removal unless the hair you want to treat is white, grey, red or light blond.
This is because there isn’t enough pigment in the hair to attract the light.IPL hair removal
You can use IPL hair removal unless your skin is very dark.
This is because the light will be attracted to the pigment in your skin as well as the hair.IPL hair removal

IPL hair removal – what does it feel like and where can I use it?

IPL hair removalAll you’ll feel when using the Philips Lumea is a quick burst of warmth. In my experience it’s completely comfortable and any mild redness disappears within a few minutes. The Lumea comes with several settings, so if your skin is super sensitive you can easily lower the intensity of the light. Best of  all, you can use the Lumea to treat anywhere on your body below the cheekbones (yes we do mean Brazilians, Hollywoods etc…) Just don’t use it over big moles or freckles as they’re too dark and will attract the light. If you’re concerned about smaller marks, you can use a white makeup pencil over them or cover them with a plaster.

IPL hair removal – isn’t it really expensive?

In terms of salon treatment yes. Upper-lip treatments are in the region of hundreds of pounds, whereas full leg treatments can set you back thousands. However, the Philips Lumea boasts up to 20 years of use (calculated on lower legs, bikini, underarms, face), with no replacement lamps needed. You can perform treatments while you watch tv, as little or as often as you choose.

IPL hair removal – how many treatments do I need and is it safe?

To begin with, you’ll need one treatment every 2 weeks to cover the hair cycle. You should see significant hair reduction after around 3 bi-weekly treatments. After that, you can perform one treatment every 4 to 8 weeks to maintain your results and zap any new hairs that may pop up (for example if you suffer from a hormone disorder).

IPL hair removal whereThe Philips Lumea has been clinically tested on over 2,000 women over the course of 14 years and is now owned by a whopping 1.5 million users worldwide. IPL has been around for over 25 years and there are no reported side effects from long term use.

And if you’re wondering about speed, to the left are approximate treatment times – you can easily perform a quick treatment without anyone ever knowing!

IPL hair removal – our top tips

  • Many people ask “can I shave, wax etc. before treatment?” The answer is yes. In fact the shorter the hair is, the better the result as the light has less distance to travel. If you’re wondering how you can wax before treatment it’s due to the hair cycle. At any one time, some hair is ‘growing’ and some is ‘resting’, and you will have hair growing below the surface of the skin that can’t be waxed but can be treated
  • Hair can only be treated while it’s in the ‘growing phase’ ie attached to the root, so if you treat an area but it appears to grow back quickly don’t despair – it’s completely different hair!
  • Smell burning hair? That’s great! It means the treatment is working, so embrace it 🙂
  • Be careful of the sun – always wear sunscreen on any areas you’re treating and don’t use the device on sunburnt or very tanned skin. If you’ve recently been in the sun, it’s best to wait 48 hours before treating that area
  • Large area to treat? Draw a grid on your body with a white makeup pencil to help you keep track of where to treat. Wipe off the pencil as you go
  • It may take around a week for the hair you treated to fall out – don’t worry that’s normal
