Traditional Shaving for the 21st Century

With Father’s Day approaching, it’s high time to delve deeper into the world of men’s grooming. Handlebar, walrus, goatee or clean-shaven, a man’s facial hair says a lot about him. It’s estimated that the average man in the UK will spend around 45 days of his life shaving. What a chore!

The good news is that by investing in the right equipment, you can turn a job into a joy. In today’s article, we’ll explore the good, bad and ugly of traditional shaving methods and how modern methods stack up. We’ll also be sharing our best buys for Father’s Day, so you can treat that special man to something that will brighten his day.

Shaving: The Tools

The tools used to get the perfect shave have changed rather a lot over the last few centuries! Traditionally, the best shave came from lathered soap and a straight, or “cut-throat”, razor dragged at an angle over the skin’s surface. Understandably, this undertaking was best performed with a second set of hands, hence the importance of the local barber!

Over time, new variations were introduced which could be done from the comfort of home, such as the safety razor which added a physical barrier to protect the face from any accidents or injuries. Still, shaving was labour intensive, required regular changing of blades (often after every use) and irritated the skin.

Since then, times have changed rather dramatically. Take, for example, Gillette Mach 3 Razor Blades, one of the top-selling razor cartridges in the world. Not only does one cartridge have three incredibly sharp blades, but it also has a gel strip to help the blade glide over the skin, and a skin guard which stretches out the skin to provide a closer shave. It’s little wonder that Gillette claims their razors leave you “feeling better after the 10th shave than a new disposable does on the first”.

What’s In Your Soap?

Old fashioned soap used for shaving has also evolved over the years. Traditional soap was made of fat and lye from wood ashes. The issue with this is that lye can be very irritating to the skin, not to mention drying. To this day, anything labelled as a ‘soap’ must follow a similar formulation to the traditional method, albeit honed to be less likely to cause skin irritation. However, many of the soaps that you find in the supermarket are created completely differently.

The majority of products that we consider ‘soap’ are actually detergents, using ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) to provide their cleansing properties. Unfortunately, SLS strips the skin’s natural oils, making it less than ideal for shaving.

Look instead, at the example of one of our best-selling shaving gels, Elemis Ice-Cool Foaming Shave Gel. Infused with fruit extracts and witch hazel, a naturally occurring ingredient that aids skin health. Not only is it free of stripping detergents, but it has additional skin-friendly ingredients such as glycerin, which is incredibly hydrating.

Shaving: The Technique

While there was once a clear ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ way to shave, the latter of which could result in serious injury, things are a tad more simple these days. Even the traditional advice of shaving with the grain, instead of against, is redundant thanks to advances in pre and post-shaving products and the evolution of razors.

It’s still advisable to open up your skin with a hot towel or shower prior to shaving – perhaps one of the only things that hasn’t changed over the course of history! This allows for a closer shave and makes it easier for the blade to move through the hair.

But perhaps the biggest impact on the shaving experience comes from the leaps and bounds in product development. Shave oils can be applied pre-shave to safeguard the skin from irritation, while post-shave, soothing lotions and balms ensure that those who shave daily don’t have to sacrifice the condition of their skin.

Father’s Day Best Buys

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for the special man in your life, we’re here to guide you in the right direction. Here are a few fantastic products for a range of men:

Best For The Clean Shaven

Men who prefer to be clean-shaven need to undergo regular upkeep, which can increase their risk of redness and sensitivity. Thankfully, there is a wide range of sensitive skincare products designed to ease the struggle. REN Tamanu High-Glide Shaving Oil is infused with tamanu oil, which is both antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

Best For Bushy Beards

We know that a big beard often requires more work, not less. Acqua Di Parma Collezione Barbiere Beard Wash gently cleanses impurities from the beard and leaves it soft and silky.

Best For The Moustachioed

Nothing quite beats a spectacularly coiffed moustache, which is why the TIGI Bed Head Mo Rider Moustache Crafter is a must for any discerning gent. With ingredients including beeswax, coconut and sunflower seed oil, it offers a great hold and nourishing properties.

Best For The Traditional

Aftershaves have largely fallen out of favour with the modern man, but traditionalists maintain it as an important step in any shaving regime. Although we have no shortage of fantastic aftershaves, Montblanc Legend makes our list due to its great scent, its stunning bottle and its fitting name for Father’s Day.

Best For The WOW Factor

If you’re looking for an outstanding gift for an outstanding man, you can’t go past the Braun Series 9 Wet & Dry Shaver. Our top of the line model, this is the world’s most efficient electric shaver. With five shaving elements, a titanium coating, and a leather travel case, this is a gift that is built to last.

Top 3 Fragrances for Every Dad

Fragrances are the ultimate gift, and with Father’s Day coming up, now is a great time to start looking at your options. But, it’s difficult enough choosing a fragrance for yourself, let alone someone else!

With that in mind, we’ve put together this list of the Top 3 Fragrances for every type of dad. So, whether the dad you’re buying for is a sporty or sensitive type, choosing a great scent for them will be a breeze. Here, we’ll list our top suggestions for each dad, and give you a brief explanation of the main notes (as identified by other customers) to help with your decision making.

Sporty Dad

You could be forgiven for thinking that the football-loving, racecar-watching dads out there wouldn’t be well catered for when it comes to fragrance. Boy oh boy, you’d be wrong! So popular are fragrances aimed at the sporty (or sport appreciating) man, that there’s a whole genre dedicated to that audience. Sports fragrances tend to be very clean, with citrus or oceanic notes. Here are our top three recommendations:

Prada Luna Rossa Sport
A fresh, bright fragrance, Luna Rossa Sport is as sophisticated as the bottle it comes in. With only five notes, it’s simple yet perfectly balanced: lavender, vanilla, tonka bean, juniper berries and ginger – this is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme
A warm, clean scent, Issey Miyake is renowned for creating modern fashions and this scent stays true to the brand. Dominant notes in this fragrance are yuzu (a Japanese citrus), lemon, blue lotus, Tahitian vetiver, bergamot and nutmeg.

Ralph Lauren Polo Sport
An oldie but a goodie, Ralph Lauren Polo Sport has been incredibly popular since its release in 1994. The main notes that shine through in this fragrance are mint, aldehydes (fresh, clean scent), lavender, seagrass and bergamot.

Suited Dad

For men who work in an office setting, finding the right fragrance can be a balancing act. Powerful, without being overbearing. Confident, without being arrogant. Warm, without being sensual. See what we mean?! Thankfully, there’s no shortage of fantastic fragrances aimed at the professional man. Here are just a few of our favourites:

Floris No.89
A name synonymous with James Bond thanks to writer Ian Fleming’s adoration of all things Floris, this quintessentially English fragrance has notes of lavender, rose, orange, bergamot, neroli and geranium.

Trussardi Riflesso
An easy-to-wear Italian fragrance, Riflesso’s main notes are tonka bean, green apple, leather, violet leaves and lavender. Ideal for a man who doesn’t like woody fragrances, this is free of the woody base notes so often used in men’s fragrances.

Guerlain Homme
A fresh and warm fragrance, Guerlain Homme consists of spicy mint, lime and rum notes layered over a floral, cedar and vetiver base. Warm and soft from day to night.

Sensitive Dad

Not all men want to smell stereotypically masculine and musky. In fact, many of them would much prefer lighter, floral notes offset against a fragrant wood such as cedar or oak. Finding a well-balanced fragrance for the sensitive man can be like finding a needle in a haystack – but we’ve narrowed down our favourites.

Evody Parfums Rêve D’Anthala
Inspired by Madagascan beaches, Rêve D’Anthala is a sweet, sensual unisex fragrance. Orchid, caramel, vanilla and amberwood provide the warmth, while petitgrain and yellow mandarin keep it fresh. You’ll be wanting to steal this one for yourself!

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01
An incredibly popular unisex fragrance, Molecule 01 is a tad difficult to describe! It’s categorised as a Woody Floral Musk, but only contains one note: Iso E Super. This synthetic compound is clean, light and airy and smells slightly different depending on the wearer.

Miller Harris Lumière Dorée
A unisex fragrance, Lumière Dorée is floral without being sweet. Neroli, bitter orange and petitgrain hit you first, with amber, vetiver, white musk and cashmere wood rounding off the base.

Intrepid Dad

When he’s not planning to climb up the nearest mountain, he’s researching destinations abroad. The Intrepid Dad appreciates global cuisines, cultures and the varied sights, sounds and smells that he experiences along the way. With interesting notes not found in run-of-the-mill fragrances, the following options are perfectly suited.

Montblanc Explorer
Not only does Montblanc Explorer smell fantastic, but the bottle is absolutely gorgeous too. Bergamot and pink pepper take the top notes, while leather, ambroxan and akigalawood anchor the fragrance.

Paco Rabanne Invictus Aqua
The perfect fragrance for Spring/Summer, Invictus Aqua is a reimagined version of the popular 2016 edition of the same name. Drawing inspiration from both land and sea, Invictus Aqua has dominant violet, grapefruit, violet leaf and sea notes, with a thoroughly woody base.

Davidoff Adventure
Exotic and spicy, Davidoff Adventure is inspired by the wilderness. With notes of pimento, black pepper, vetiver, cedar and sesame, it wouldn’t be out of place on a lumberjack (in a good way).

Classic Dad

For older gents or men who don’t often experiment with their fragrance, finding a suitable gift can be a tad tricky. Instead of opting for anything too modern, stick with brands and fragrances that have stood the test of time. You won’t go wrong with any of the three following options.

Creed Aventus
An “old school” fragrance, Creed Aventus ranks highly in the most praised men’s perfumes on the market. Though classic, it’s far from boring, with prominent notes including pineapple, birch, musk, blackcurrant and oakmoss.

Versace The Dreamer
Another highly popular fragrance among those with refined tastes, The Dreamer by Versace balances floral and herbal notes. Iris, juniper, flax, lily and tarragon rest on a base of amber and tobacco blossom.

Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de l’Homme
You can’t go wrong with Yves Saint Laurent, and La Nuit de l’Homme is no exception. A warm and spicy, powdery fragrance, cardamom is the first scent you’ll notice, followed by lavender, cedar, bergamot, caraway and vetiver.

High class fragrance is quite easy to find (think timeless classics such as Dior, Chanel and Boss). But something really special? Something between High Street and Bespoke? Enter Tom Ford, the American designer and film director, who started his career at Chloe before turning around the fortunes of Gucci.

Who Is The Average User? Tom Ford aftershaves and colognes are for every man, they’re perfect for Dads of any age.

Our Top 3 Tom Ford fragrance products for Father’s Day

Tom Ford Oud Wood is part of the Private Blend range. A wonderful blend of smoky incense, sandalwood and vetiver. We won’t pretend it’s a budget buy (expect to pay around £100 for a 30ml size) but it’s well worth considering if you can stretch to that extra treat.

Private Blend is my own scent laboratory: it’s where I have the ability to create very special, original fragrances that are unconstrained by the conventions of mainstream scent-making. Private Blend is designed with the true fragrance connoisseur in mind. – Tom Ford

Tom Ford, Private Blend Neroli Portofino (Shower Gel 250ml) – when you’d prefer to give a bath and body product, go for ultimate luxury! Private Blend Neroli Portofino is a best selling, high end fragrance by Tom Ford. This gentle cleansing gel is fragranced with the same scent but at a fraction of the cost. A very modern scent, Neroli Portofino combines citrus oils and floral notes with Amber undertones to awaken the senses.

Tom Ford, Noir (Eau de Parfum 50ml) is an update on the original fragrance released in 2012. The oriental and spicy notes of the 2012 original have been refreshed with a mix of new elements. These include spearmint, Italian lemon and pure citrus oils. This gives the composition a cooling freshness that’s ideal for warmer months and dials down the oriental top notes. Underneath is a base of traditional wood and musk.

All Tom Ford fragrance products have accompanying bath and body products, including soap, deodorant and body lotion, so well worth checking if you’re on a budget.
