Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide

We all understand protecting ourselves from the sun is important for our skin health, but with so much conflicting information out there, how do we know which products do the best job?

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two of the most widely used sunscreen ingredients, but how they work isn’t general knowledge. If chemistry isn’t your forte, we’re here to break it down for you. In this article, we’ll be explaining what these ingredients are, how they work, and whether they’re good for your skin.

What Are Zinc Oxide And Titanium Dioxide?

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two types of natural ingredients used in “physical sunscreen”.

Physical sunscreen, or mineral sunscreen, is made from natural ingredients which sit on the skin’s surface. They act as a shield, bouncing the sun’s rays off the skin.

Chemical sunscreen meanwhile, uses a combination of chemical ingredients that deactivate sunlight, converting UV rays into heat.

Dermatologists widely recommend that we choose physical sunscreen over chemical sunscreen for the following reasons:

  • It lasts longer than chemical sunscreen.
  • It is gentler on the skin and won’t clog pores.
  • It works immediately on application (chemical sunscreen doesn’t work for around 20 minutes).

What Do They Do?

In order to understand how zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work, we first need to get to the bottom of how the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays operate.

There are three different types of UV rays, UVA, UVB, and UVC. The two we most need to worry about are UVA and UVB, as UVC is filtered out by the atmosphere before it can make it to the Earth’s surface.

  • UVA rays are able to deeply penetrate our skin, damaging cells and leading to premature ageing.
  • UVB rays don’t penetrate as deeply, only reaching the skin’s surface. These are the rays that can cause sunburn and ultimately, skin cancer.

In order to protect ourselves from both UVA and UVB rays, a “broad-spectrum” or “full-spectrum” sunscreen is needed. While there are a number of natural ingredients that can shield skin from either UVA or UVB rays, there are only two ingredients that can do both – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Top tip: An easy way to remember which UV ray is responsible for an outcome is, UVA(geing) and UVB(urning).

Who Can Benefit From Using Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide?

Ultimately, we all need to be using sunscreen daily, particularly during the warmer months, but choosing the right sunscreen is an important part of the process. Which natural ingredient is best suited for your skin will depend on your skin’s sensitivity and tone.

Zinc oxide has slightly larger particles which create a slightly opaque white sheen on the skin. This makes it ideal for pale skin, as it creates a nice, even coverage, so is often used in SPF makeup products. It’s also great for those with oily skin or acne, as it has natural antimicrobial properties and is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores. Zinc oxide is also the most effective natural ingredient against both UVA and UVB rays.

Titanium dioxide has smaller particles and doesn’t leave a milky sheen, which makes it ideal for darker complexions. For this reason, it’s often used as an ingredient in cosmetics as it can offer protection without diluting the colour. Like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide is non-comedogenic, but it’s also very gentle on the skin, making it great for oily and sensitive skin alike.

5 Reasons Travel Size Makeup and Toiletries Are The Future

Here at allbeauty, we LOVE a travel size beauty product. We certainly don’t need any encouragement to get our hands on the latest mini makeup must-haves. But just in case you’re still sitting on the fence, here are five reasons we go wild for travel size toiletries.

1. Small on size, big on convenience

Whether you’re jetting off on a long haul adventure or spending a weekend at the in-laws, there’s no need to sacrifice convenience this summer. For short holidays of only a few days, our range of products below 30ml is ideal, while if you’re holidaying for a week or more, the “over 30ml” options will keep you well supplied until you return home.

You’d be amazed how many travel size toiletries you can fit into one mini makeup bag. Perfume? Check. Lotion? Check. Shampoo, conditioner, antiperspirant, cleanser, serum, face cream, hand cream, toner, foundation, lipstick, gloss, mascara? CHECK!

Why force yourself to prioritise the essentials when you can bring it all?

2. They can save you money

Don’t get caught out making last-minute emergency purchases! It pays to be organised and buying toiletries is no exception. A recent investigation into comparative prices between duty free and the high street showed you can often end up paying over the odds for beauty products in airports.

Instead, save money by ordering everything you need in advance, at allbeauty.

What’s more, for the same amount you’d spend on one large bottle, you can justify buying multiples in travel size. Leave one at work, one in your bag and one at your partner’s apartment – it’s a win/win/win!

3. Doctor’s orders

You want to be prepared for any situation, whether it be an impromptu meal after work or an unexpected overnight stay. What you don’t want is to lug around all that excess weight.

The average handbag weighs 3 kilograms, that’s three bags of sugar! It’s no wonder that 63% of women experience regular back pain. Travel size toiletries and mini makeup allow you to scale back the weight of what you keep in your beauty kit, without the need to sacrifice any of your must-have items.

So, whether you’re rocking a changing bag, backpack or slimline purse, free up some room and give your back a break by opting for travel size makeup. Make room for what’s most important.

4. Reduce your holiday waste

Let’s be honest, how many of us have abandoned shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and a host of other toiletries in our hotel at the end of a week away? Do you really want to run the risk of the bottle reopening in your case on the journey home? With travel size products, you bring only what you need, reducing the amount of holiday products which end up in landfill.

Not only that, but those little empty bottles at the end of your holiday still have plenty of life in them. Tried a new lotion and loved it? Buy the full-size version when you get home and decant some into the travel size bottle for your gym bag.

5. Try before you buy

You’ve heard good things about a new perfume but aren’t sure whether to commit. With travel size, you don’t have to! One of the best reasons for buying travel size makeup, perfume or toiletries, is that you get to try new products without having the initial financial outlay.

Purchasing the mini version of a product you have your eye on allows you to give it a trial run; you can decide later whether the full-size is an investment worth making.

Those in our office with sensitive skin swear by travel size moisturisers for precisely this reason. There’s nothing worse than buying that new, high-end cream, only to end up having an unfortunate, expensive, breakout.

Not just that, but many mini beauty products, including lipgloss, perfumes and skincare, also come in collections of a brand’s best selling products. This gives you a fantastic opportunity to try a range of similar shades, scents, or formulations that you may not have picked out otherwise.
