World Wellbeing Week Toolkit with Neom

Now in its second year, World WellBeing Week provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on our overall awareness for the many aspects of wellbeing including social, physical, emotional, financial, career, community and environmental wellbeing. With this year bringing events that we could not have planned, it is important now, more than ever, that we are equipped with the tools to cope so that our wellbeing can thrive.

We have caught up with Neom Organics founder and Creative Director, Nicola Elliott, to talk us through finding your own personal toolkit:

“Wow, where do I start? I am not a calm person, I wish I was. I’m a full-on ball of energy, with a default state of super busy. It has gotten me into big trouble and I started to get anxiety. After spending seven hectic years working 60 hour weeks as an editor for Glamour magazine, I noticed my own wellbeing, and that of my close friends, was being affected by the stress and demands of modern-day busy life.

Other offenders? Poor sleep, stress, low energy and mood swings. This kick-started my own wellbeing journey so I trained as an aromatherapist and nutritionist. My wellbeing was a big part of launching NEOM because I found that essential oils (and our particular blend called Real Luxury which I created) can be a massive help for me and my wellbeing.

I place a high priority on taking care of myself. After all, we need to be healthy and happy ourselves to be able to take care of others. I try to take a little time out for myself each day, whether that’s a quick run in the morning, or a relaxing bath in the evening, just having that time to switch off from being a mum/wife/boss is super important for me.

At NEOM our mantra is “Small Steps Big Difference” – if you can do just one small thing each day, it can make a huge difference to your wellbeing in the long term. Wellbeing doesn’t have to be about perfect green smoothies (although cool if you like them) or crazy exercise/dieting, it can be a walk round the park with your kids, a glass of wine with your friends that boosts your mood, grabbing a deeply relaxing bath that works hard to prepare you for a perfect night’s sleep, lighting up a candle at home and creating a calm zone or it might be a yoga class or a long run – whatever your version of wellbeing is, is cool, but let’s keep it real!

 My small steps to Wellbeing…

Mornings start with a power shower
An easy way to start your day with a mood lift is to use
Great Day Body Wash, followed by the Body Lotion and a drop of Great Day Face Oil with the zingy essential oils of mint and mandarin.

Move your body
Find what works best for you. Yoga? A walk – I like to run outdoors – a double whammy if you can get fresh air (and Vitamin D) at the same time.Meditate –  (I like the Calm App). This can be tricky for me, but something little each day works a treat for busy/overloaded minds.

Essential Oils & The Breath
Essential Oils are an excellent tool to de-stress and take yourself out of the moment, there is a blend for every mood and feeling, whether you are looking for
sleep, calm, energy or happiness-boosting. There are multiple ways to reap the benefits of essential oil, you can inhale them, either through a humidifier or diffuser. Add them to a carrier oil such as coconut, jojoba or almond oil and apply to your skin. I burn the 3 wick candle daily and also use the super-smart Real Luxury Magnesium Body Butter with skin-nourishing ingredients and a shot of magnesium – a wonder mineral which up to 80% of us are deficient in and is brilliant for so many things including helping with better sleep, less stress and boosting your mood.

Unplug
It’s not the device itself as much as that ‘always on’ feeling it creates. Ping! Oh is that my boss? Ping! What’s the matter now? Ping! They might need me immediately….you get the gist it’s just a relentless ‘turned on’ feeling that just needs turning OFF for a few hours.

Baths
In 10 mins I can create a calm zone in my bathroom and I honestly emerge feeling like I’ve done a personal reboot. I switch on The Wellbeing Pod (with a little sleepy essential oil blend) and add a glug of
Bedtime Hero Bath Foam and relax.

Making your hair colour last at home – With Shu Uemura

Summertime is great, the temperature is rising, we can work on our tans and wear those fabulous summer clothes we’ve been storing all winter, maybe even take the plunge and get those summer sun-kissed highlights you’ve been dreaming of?

Summer is a feel-good season, sitting in the sun is great for relaxation, stress relief and mental well-being, we also get our fix of vitamin D, which has numerous benefits to our bodies.

However, summer can also wreak havoc on our coloured hair. The sun can weaken your hair’s protein structure and strip the hair of its natural moisture, causing dry and brittle hair, not a great mix for coloured hair, which relies on healthy locks to stop that unwanted colour fade.

Luckily, Shu Uemura Art of Hair are experts in the art of making your hair colour last. The ultimate in avant-garde luxury, Shu Uemura Art of Hair fuses unique natural ingredients with trailblazing science, and the experience of the world’s most inspired hairstylists, to offer women everywhere the absolute artistry of beautiful hair.

Their Colour Lustre range is specifically designed to preserve and intensify your hair colour at home, preventing that fade and keeping your colour locked and lasting.

Explore the Shu Uemura Art of Hair method for prolonging your colour and keeping it vibrant all year round:

Don’t wash coloured hair too often

To prevent water from washing away your vibrant colour, the answer is simple: Wash your hair less often. To retain those natural oils that help condition your colour-treated hair, shampoo just two or three times per week, and never more than every other day. This will help your colour last longer and help maintain health in your coloured hair.

Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Lustre
Dry Cleaner For Colour-Treated Hair 136g

Try Colour Lustre Dry Cleaner for colour treated hair, this 2-in-1 Dry shampoo gently cleanses by absorbing oils and impurities at the roots while moisturising dry lengths and ends. Unlike other dry shampoos, the formula has translucent micro-fine powders that absorb oil without leaving any residue or unwanted texture behind.

Great for second-day hairstyles, post-gym touch-ups and workweek refreshes.

To use: Create a part on dry hair. Shake well before use. Spray dry shampoo 8-10 inches from roots. Repeat on multiple sections as desired. Brush or use fingers to distribute product evenly.

Protect against Heat

Everyday heat styling causes structural damage to the protein of the hair and denaturing occurs. What that means is that the proteins open up, opening the proteins weakens the core structure of hair which is why applying heat protectant is so important, try Colour Lustre Brilliant Glaze Thermomilk, highly concentrated in Refining Lipids, this lightweight, nourishing leave-in milk for colour-treated hair provides guilt-free heat styling and all-day shape memory while protecting from colour fade. Imparts a vibrant, glazed shine and a polished touch.

Brilliant Glaze Thermomilk 150ml

To use: On towel-dried hair, apply a small amount evenly from mid-lengths to ends. Comb through for even distribution. Section hair and blow-dry section by section from roots to ends. Do not rinse.

Preserve Colour

Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Shampoo transforms into a rich, abundant foam that lathers quickly and offers easy rinsing while protecting from colour washout and respecting the balance of the scalp. Prevents colour from fading, protects the hair fibre and balances the scalp’s natural oils. The shampoo’s refining lipids mimic the hair’s natural protective varnish to insulate the cortex from water and other external stress factors. Contains Musk Rose Oil known for its inherent healing properties and Goji Berry Extract which helps protect the hair from oxidation and colour fade.

Nourish Your Hair

Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Conditioner provides lightweight conditioning with a glazed touch and polished shine from mid-lengths to ends while preserving the hair colour. The conditioner’s refining lipids mimic the hair’s natural protective varnish to insulate the cortex from water and other external stress factors. Resulting in the restoration of hair’s natural varnish, colour preservation and added vibrant polished shine. Formulated for daily use.

Reverse the Damage

For hair that feels damaged through colour treatments and heat damage use Colour Lustre Brilliant Glaze Masque. This rich cream masque instantly restores the hair’s protective varnish to preserve hair colour and deeply nourishes the hair fibre. Provides a glazed touch from mid-lengths to ends with a vibrant, polished shine. Musk rose oil with inherent healing properties the oil is rich in fatty acids that deeply nourish the hair fibre and protect the hair from discolouring.

Heatwave Hair Hacks with KMS

REDUCE FRIZZ and avoid that dreaded humidity hair

As temperatures rise and humidity levels rocket, we all risk falling victim to dreaded ‘humidity hair’ disasters. The main cause of frizz and flyaways during summer is lack of moisture in our hair, meaning the cuticles of our hair dry out and create this ‘frizzy’ result.

Here’s the good news – you can tame that frizz in three easy steps!

KMS are a professional hair brand with a range of products organised into three easy steps – START, STYLE and FINISH. By using the TAMEFRIZZ Start, Style, Finish regime you can reduce frizz by up to 100%.

STEP 1: START WITH A GOOD BASE

It is important to understand the cause of frizz so you can take the right steps to combat your unruly locks. Frizz is caused by humidity, which is the level of moisture in the air. If you have dry hair, it is more inclined to soak up that moisture from the air causing the hair cuticles to expand and making the hair look fluffy or frizzy.

KMS TameFrizz SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER will give you the perfect base to fight the frizz. With the innovative technology of AHA structure complex, this shampoo and conditioner combo is your first step in frizz reduction. Lactic Acid and Malic Acid work to support the internal reconstruction of the hair while Polyquaternium-10 evens out the hair surface. TAMEFRIZZ conditioner not only combats frizz but also detangles and conditions the hair.

KMS START
TameFrizz Shampoo 750ml

KMS START
TameFrizz Conditioner 750ml

For added humidity protection, use TAMEFRIZZ SMOOTHING RECONSTRUCTOR. This mask works to revive and soften even the most deeply stressed or overworked hair. The formula is light enough not to weigh down hair, but hydrating enough to tame frizz. Just apply the product evenly to shampooed hair and leave on for 3-5 minutes then rinse.

STEP 2: STYLE
USE ANTI-FRIZZ STYLING PRODUCTS TO BUILD A FULL HUMIDITY CONTROL REGIME

KMS TAMEFRIZZ SMOOTHING LOTION reduces frizz during the drying process. Work the lotion through towel-dried hair and blow-dry or air dry. This product is made up of innovative shaping blends that are key to eliminating flyaways and static. Polyquaternium-37 eliminates flyaways while Hydroxypropyl Guar/Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride smoothes and reduces frizz.

KMS STYLE
TameFrizz Smoothing Lotion 150ml

STYLISTS TIP:  Our stylists recommend sleeping with a silk hair wrap. This tip will protect your hair from friction that is caused by cotton pillowcases – Using silk to protect the hair will not only fight frizz but also reduce breakage.

STEP 3: FINISH
LOCK IN YOUR STYLE WITH ANTI HUMIDITY HEROES

To finish off the frizz taming process use KMS TAMEFRIZZ DE-FRIZZ OIL. You don’t need to worry about this oil leaving your hair greasy or flat as it is made up of a lightweight non-greasy formula that absorbs instantly. Apply a few drops to dry hair in order to smooth and seal the cuticle. Thanks to the Dimethiconol Polymer, TAMEFRIZZ  DE-FRIZZ OIL provides frizz and humidity control for up to THREE DAYS!

KMS FINISH
TameFrizz De-Frizz Oil 100ml

Styling Tip: Lock in your look with Anti-humidity hairspray in order to shield your hair from frizz.

KMS FINISH
HairStay Anti-Humidity Seal 150ml

KMS HAIRSTAY ANTI-HUMIDITY SEAL acts like an umbrella for the hair, shielding it from humidity and frizz for up to 72 hours! Spray 10-12″ (25-30 cm) from dry hair as a final seal against humidity.

Bringing The Party To You: Home Festival Hacks

Festivals might be cancelled, but summer definitely isn’t! If you’re missing out on your festival fix this year, we’re here with plenty of tips, ideas and inspiration to get the full experience from the comfort of your home.

If you live alone, party like no-ones watching! Or, if you have kids in tow, get them involved! After all, music education is still education, and what better way to introduce kids to festivals than by throwing one in your own backyard!?

Read on for your total At-Home Festival Guide…

Getting The Look

Festival style is all about the effortless hippie/boho look, so dig out anything tasselled, crocheted or cropped, and live your best life.

Getting all dressed up is essential for any festival, even if you won’t be leaving your postcode. Embrace all things colour, glitter and fun – kids, in particular, will love joining in for this part. Here’s the list of must-have items for festival fun.

Sun Protection

It might be tempting to forego the SPF when you know you’ll be dipping in and out of the house, but this should really be a non-negotiable. Protecting your skin from the sun’s UV rays is one of the single most important ways you can prevent premature ageing and pigmentation. So, stock up on your summer essentials and stay safe.

Be Bold

Colour, colour, colour. Bright, bold colours take centre stage, so make sure you’ve got everything you need to nail the look. Everyone needs at least one vibrant eyeshadow palette in their collection, precisely for moments like this! If your eyeshadow options err on the side of beige, check out one of these great options…

If you haven’t heard of Jeffree Star, he’s an American makeup artist taking Youtube by storm. Known for his love of bright colours, the Beauty Killer eyeshadow palette will make a great addition to your festival look.

Another fabulous option is the Makeup Addiction Sinful Eyes Palette, which you can pick up with a 36% discount in our Outlet.

Highlighter

Whether you’ve had a good dose of summer sun already or have been stuck indoors, highlighter is a great way to get the sunkissed, glowing look that is synonymous with festivals. There are endless Youtube tutorials to help you master the look without looking too shiny. Try the Endless Glow Highlighter by BareMinerals which has just the right amount of shimmer and comes in four awesome shades.

Festival Hair

Loose, natural waves are popular for good reason, they’re low maintenance, add shape to the face and look gorgeous. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, it’s all about colour when it comes to getting the festival look.

Try label.m Mini Powder Spray, which includes four stunning colours that spray on and wash off. Ideal for getting the kids involved, or to spice up your own look. Or, if you want something equally fabulous, but a little more glam, take a look at the Affinage Party Mode Pack which includes an anti-frizz mirror shine spray, blow dry cream and, most importantly, a 3 in 1 body glitter kit. Shine, girl! Shine!

Choose A Festival Fragrance

While it’s by no means a necessity (perfume certainly isn’t the smell you’d associate with sweaty, muddy festivals), why not add an extra element to you event with a boost of something scented.

We couldn’t leave this perfume off our list, after all, it has “festival” in it’s name – that’s always a good sign! Festival Vibes For Her by Hollister infuses tonka bean, goji berries, quince and bergamot into the ultimate perfume to wear to your at-home festival.

Another great fragrance that is worth a try is Reb’l Fleur by Rihanna. Coconut, vanilla, peach, plum – are you drooling yet? This one is perfect for warm summer days in the sunshine. And after all, is any festival really complete without a bit of Rihanna?

Setting The Scene

Speaking of Rihanna, line up the perfect soundtrack for HomeFest by digging out your old CDs and records, or take a more modern approach with Spotify or by streaming concert footage on Youtube. The best part of holding your own festival is that you choose the tracklist, no filler acts!

Make sure you have some marshmallows, burgers and your drink of choice at the ready to continue the festival vibes through the evening.

Of course, no festival is complete without a night spent sleeping under canvas, so set up your tent (or create an inside version) and snuggle down for a unique way to end the day. A word to the wise though, if you’re going to indulge in some outdoor camping, you might want to have this set on hand:

Home Fragrance Gifts

If he’s not much of a beauty guy, consider treating dad to a scented candle, with a masculine twist. Ideal for the den, man cave, office, or simply for any man who wants to make his home smell wonderful, these home fragrances are just the ticket.

Noble Isle Lightening Oak Candle
Another entry from Noble Isle, the Lightening Oak candle is beautifully boxed ready for gifting and has a rich, warming scent. Described as a “handsome fragrance balancing smoky wood aromas with modern notes of crushed pink pepper and bergamot”, it’s an incredibly popular choice.  Alternatively, try Whisky & Water, for a spicier masculine scent.

Acqua di Parma Colonia Oud Candle Cube
You’d be hard-pressed to find a candle that looks as sophisticated as this. With around 60 hours of burning time and a scent that truly lasts, the Oud Candle Cube blends citrus, agarwood and coriander with heavier base notes of cedar, sandalwood, musk and leather.

Impossible To Buy For?

Even with all the suggestions we’ve covered in this and other articles, you may still be struggling to find the right fit for the significant man in your life. We get it. Some people are just impossible to buy for. Well, for those people, you can’t go wrong with a gift voucher

Grab a funny card, add a heartfelt message and pop a gift voucher inside – you’ll show that you care, but can let them handpick something that they’ll truly enjoy.

Phew! Job done for another year. Although… it’s only 6 months until Christmas. *sigh*

Honest Talk with Tigi – Recreate the salon feeling at home

Hairdressers and educators from the professional haircare brand TIGI are sharing their tips and tricks for keeping your hair healthy, vibrant and full of life while visits to the hairdresser are a no-go.

TIGI’s three top tips for keeping hair healthy at home:

• Choose the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type

• Treat your hair once a week

• Find an effortless product that makes you feel good

Tips from:

• Piero Gentile, TIGI UK Academy Creative Director

• Aaron Overton, TIGI Regional Education Specialist

• Lucy Hicks, TIGI Regional Education Specialist

• Katie Hartley, TIGI Regional Education Specialist

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type

Damaged hair

When hair is damaged, it is best to use a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically to help repair, strengthen and protect your hair.

Top tip for damaged coloured hair: If your hair is damaged, focus on repairing the damage first as unhealthy hair does not hold colour in the same way. First, use a repairing shampoo and conditioner, then move onto colour protection.

The first step to bringing lustre back to hair is ensuring you have the best-suited shampoo and conditioner.  If you use a lot of heat, try Bed Head Urban Antidotes Resurrection Shampoo and Conditioner Set – they are infused with repairing properties to help keep the hair strong and shiny.

TIGI Bed Head Urban Antidotes
Resurrection Tween Set: Shampoo 750ml & Conditioner 750ml

Brunettes and redheads

While visits to the salon for colour services are not possible, it is important to keep coloured hair nourished and help hair maintain its vibrant colour.

For those brunettes and redheads out there, Bed Head Colour Goddess is your miracle in a bottle.  Infused with sweet almond oil, coconut oil and vitamin E, the shampoo and conditioner help to keep the hair hydrated, maintain and enhance the colour vibrancy and keep your coloured hair looking salon fresh.

TIGI Bed Head Colour Goddess
Tween Set: Shampoo 750ml & Conditioner 750ml

Top tip: make sure your water isn’t too hot when washing coloured hair and not to over-style using heat to maximise colour retention!

Blonde hair

Maintaining blonde hair colour in between salon visits can be tough, so finding a professional purple shampoo that enhances cool tones and banishes brassy and yellow tones is essential.

Top tip: be sure to use a high-quality, moisturising violet shampoo to avoid dehydrating and over toning hair, making it appear dull.

To properly maintain cooler blonde colours, use a moisturising violet-based shampoo – Catwalk Fashionista Blonde is perfect. With a violet pigment, which neutralises unwanted brassiness and maintains the blonde colour you have, it will not overtone the ends, which can make it difficult for your hairdresser to balance the colour.

TIGI Catwalk Fashionista
Violet Shampoo 750ml

Bed Head Dumb Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner is great for getting specifically blonde hair back to its brilliant best. It is a protein-containing shampoo and conditioner that will help eliminate hair breakage.

TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde
Tween Set: Shampoo 750ml & Reconstructor Conditioner 750ml

Top tip: The blonde conditioner doubles as a reconstructive treatment when left on for 5 minutes once a week

Treat your hair once a week

While haircuts are out of the question, retaining nourished and strong hair is really important. Deep conditioning and repair treatments are great to use once a week for a hair treat!

Treatment for coloured hair

It is important to improve the hair’s ability to hold onto colour from dying. Use the Bed Head Colour Goddess Hair Mask that was designed specifically for coloured hair. Containing a blend of an antioxidant, vitamin and pro-vitamin, this hair mask gives hair intense moisture and deep conditioning which helps hair maintain its electrifying colour.

TIGI Bed Head Colour Goddess
Miracle Treatment Hair Mask for Coloured Hair 200g

For intensive damage repair

Damaged hair can be caused by chemicals, heat and the environment. To give damaged hair a boost of repair and protection, use the Bed Head Resurrection Hair Mask. The hair mask coats the strands of hair to ensure moisture is kept in and the hair is protected.

Resurrection Treatment Mask 200g

Top tip: to help prevent frizz and increase shine, rinse off your hair mask with cold water

Prefer a leave-in treatment? Bed Head Ego Boost is a multi-functioning leave-in-conditioner. The deep conditioning treatment, with keratin, leaves the hair structure protected by forming a thin film on the hair, it conditions and moisturises hair, making hair softer and easier to comb through, and it fights frizz.

Top tip: to maximise volume, gently rough dry your hair after applying the thickening spray, then re-apply the products before blow-drying into shape!

Blow-drying at home tips

• Start with the difficult areas first, if you have a fringe, don’t leave it till last. It will dry on its own and will be a struggle to control by the time you have completed the rest of the blow-dry.

• Don’t try to blow dry using a brush straight from wet hair. Blast at least 70-80% of the moisture out first, take neat sections and try to use a medium heat.

• For smoother styles that don’t require volume, work with a paddle or a cushion brush, brush hair from side to side to create a neutral finish, this is called wrap drying.

• Finish hair with a shot of cool air to seal the result.

Marvellous Minis For Every Occasion

Who doesn’t love a miniature!? Mini eggs, mini quiche, Minnie Mouse… ok, that may be a little too much of a stretch!

Whether it’s those tiny shampoos from upmarket hotels or designer sets of miniature fragrances, miniature versions of perfumes and cosmetics have always been incredibly popular, and for good reason! Minis are perfect for when you’re on-the-go or just fancy trying something new without too much commitment. Here are some of our top reasons that minis are marvellous for every occasion, complete with a little inspiration to help you on your way.

Who knows what will go on during a big night out, it’s best to be prepared! Bring your favourite beauty products out with you, regardless of how slinky your handbag is with miniature versions of fantastic cosmetics. Whether it’s topping up your lippy or pencilling in an eyebrow, minis have you covered.

With teeny versions of their best-selling products, Benefit are leading the way with their Minis Range. Perfect for topping up your makeup on a night out, try the teeny Benefit Minis Boi-ing Cakeless Concealer or the equally diddy Benefit Minis Roller Liner

Whatever You Need For A Weekend Break

Getting away for an indulgent weekend break? You don’t have to go without OR be weighed down with full-size toiletries. Our range of products below 30ml is the ideal size for a few days of use, keeping your weekend bag light, and you looking gorgeous.

We particularly love the Clinique 3-Step Introduction Set, which includes a cleanser, exfoliator and moisturiser. If you have trouble drifting off to sleep in an unfamiliar setting, invest in thisworks Super Sleep. The limited-edition, travel-size spray has two options, depending on whether you have a busy weekend of activities ahead, or are catching up on some much-needed downtime.

Holidays Without The Hold Luggage

Don’t get caught paying over the odds for overweight luggage. Full-sized toiletries add unwanted heft to your luggage and often end up being left at your hotel to save the spill-risk of transporting half-empty bottles home. Instead, miniatures ensure you have exactly what you need for your holiday – no more, no less.

Hair gurus, TIGI Bed Head, have the perfect miniature set for holiday hair. The Cleansing And Moisturising Mini Set includes small versions of their Totally Beachin’ Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as their Beach Freak Moisturising Detangling Spray. Small enough to meet hand luggage requirements, the set even comes in a clear ziplock bag, so you can be confident you won’t have any unwanted mess.

A Miniature Emergency Supply

Life is unpredictable, which is why it’s a great idea to keep an emergency supply of miniatures with you wherever you go. Small enough to throw in your handbag, with your trusty minis on hand, you’ll be ready for whatever the day throws at you.

While the contents of an emergency kit will vary depending on the person, there are a few core items that the allbeauty team can recommend to all our readers.

With three types of tweezers in a handy carry case, this is a must-have. If you have kids, it’s a lifesaver for those unexpected splinters or bee stings. And don’t let their small size fool you, they’re as effective as regular tweezers too (they’ve plucked many a stray hair from an eyebrow or *ahem* chin).

Antipodes Saviour Skin Balm Mini

Harking from the green shores of New Zealand, this little tube packs a real punch. The natural ingredients include tea tree, grape seed, totara and super-fruit extracts to create a healing balm with a range of uses. The Saviour Skin Balm can be used on grazes, chapped lips, cracked skin, sunburn, sore muscles and more.

Other great options include:

Experiment With A New Look

If you’ve ever been tempted to rock a red lip or play around with a new trend, miniatures are the ideal way to dip your toe in the waters. Instead of paying full-price for something that might not be a keeper, a smaller size allows you to experiment before deciding whether it’s for you.

With three lip stains and three lip glosses, theBalm Mini Lip Gloss Kit lets you try out a few new colours without paying for six separate products. Less wasted product + more money saved = happy chappy.

Another great kit, again from Benefit (they’re not sponsoring this article, honestly!), is the Snow Doll MakeUp Kit. This set includes small versions of their best-selling beauty products, including a mascara, rose-tinted lip and cheek stain, nude-pink highlighter and brow pencil – everything you need to perfect your look.

Expand Your Range

Have you stumbled across an amazing perfume or skincare product and want to try more of the range? Forget the hassle of finding a brick and mortar store that is willing to let you try their items (complete with side-eye from impatient sales assistants). Instead, try a miniature collection of the range you’re interested in. Not only does this allow you to get a better feel for each product, it allows you to incorporate them into your daily routine, so you get a better idea if they work for you.

When it comes to perfume, miniatures are a fantastic way to play around with new fragrances. As scents can differ from day to night and summer to winter, having a mini bottle allows you to experiment without committing to a full bottle. Try five Versace perfumes for less than the price of one regular bottle with the great value Versace Mini Gift Set. Similarly, the popular Agent Provocateur Eau de Parfum Mini Set includes four 10ml fragrances and is an absolute steal.

Traditional Shaving for the 21st Century

With Father’s Day approaching, it’s high time to delve deeper into the world of men’s grooming. Handlebar, walrus, goatee or clean-shaven, a man’s facial hair says a lot about him. It’s estimated that the average man in the UK will spend around 45 days of his life shaving. What a chore!

The good news is that by investing in the right equipment, you can turn a job into a joy. In today’s article, we’ll explore the good, bad and ugly of traditional shaving methods and how modern methods stack up. We’ll also be sharing our best buys for Father’s Day, so you can treat that special man to something that will brighten his day.

Shaving: The Tools

The tools used to get the perfect shave have changed rather a lot over the last few centuries! Traditionally, the best shave came from lathered soap and a straight, or “cut-throat”, razor dragged at an angle over the skin’s surface. Understandably, this undertaking was best performed with a second set of hands, hence the importance of the local barber!

Over time, new variations were introduced which could be done from the comfort of home, such as the safety razor which added a physical barrier to protect the face from any accidents or injuries. Still, shaving was labour intensive, required regular changing of blades (often after every use) and irritated the skin.

Since then, times have changed rather dramatically. Take, for example, Gillette Mach 3 Razor Blades, one of the top-selling razor cartridges in the world. Not only does one cartridge have three incredibly sharp blades, but it also has a gel strip to help the blade glide over the skin, and a skin guard which stretches out the skin to provide a closer shave. It’s little wonder that Gillette claims their razors leave you “feeling better after the 10th shave than a new disposable does on the first”.

What’s In Your Soap?

Old fashioned soap used for shaving has also evolved over the years. Traditional soap was made of fat and lye from wood ashes. The issue with this is that lye can be very irritating to the skin, not to mention drying. To this day, anything labelled as a ‘soap’ must follow a similar formulation to the traditional method, albeit honed to be less likely to cause skin irritation. However, many of the soaps that you find in the supermarket are created completely differently.

The majority of products that we consider ‘soap’ are actually detergents, using ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) to provide their cleansing properties. Unfortunately, SLS strips the skin’s natural oils, making it less than ideal for shaving.

Look instead, at the example of one of our best-selling shaving gels, Elemis Ice-Cool Foaming Shave Gel. Infused with fruit extracts and witch hazel, a naturally occurring ingredient that aids skin health. Not only is it free of stripping detergents, but it has additional skin-friendly ingredients such as glycerin, which is incredibly hydrating.

Shaving: The Technique

While there was once a clear ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ way to shave, the latter of which could result in serious injury, things are a tad more simple these days. Even the traditional advice of shaving with the grain, instead of against, is redundant thanks to advances in pre and post-shaving products and the evolution of razors.

It’s still advisable to open up your skin with a hot towel or shower prior to shaving – perhaps one of the only things that hasn’t changed over the course of history! This allows for a closer shave and makes it easier for the blade to move through the hair.

But perhaps the biggest impact on the shaving experience comes from the leaps and bounds in product development. Shave oils can be applied pre-shave to safeguard the skin from irritation, while post-shave, soothing lotions and balms ensure that those who shave daily don’t have to sacrifice the condition of their skin.

Father’s Day Best Buys

Thankfully, there is a wide range of sensitive skincare products designed to ease the struggle. REN Tamanu High-Glide Shaving Oil is infused with tamanu oil, which is both antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

Best For Bushy Beards

We know that a big beard often requires more work, not less. Acqua Di Parma Collezione Barbiere Beard Wash gently cleanses impurities from the beard and leaves it soft and silky.

Best For The Moustachioed

Nothing quite beats a spectacularly coiffed moustache, which is why the TIGI Bed Head Mo Rider Moustache Crafter is a must for any discerning gent. With ingredients including beeswax, coconut and sunflower seed oil, it offers a great hold and nourishing properties.

Best For The Traditional

Aftershaves have largely fallen out of favour with the modern man, but traditionalists maintain it as an important step in any shaving regime. Although we have no shortage of fantastic aftershaves, Montblanc Legend makes our list due to its great scent, its stunning bottle and its fitting name for Father’s Day.

Best For The WOW Factor

If you’re looking for an outstanding gift for an outstanding man, you can’t go past the Braun Series 9 Wet & Dry Shaver. Our top of the line model, this is the world’s most efficient electric shaver. Top 3 Fragrances for Every Dad

Fragrances are the ultimate gift, and with Father’s Day coming up, now is a great time to start looking at your options. But, it’s difficult enough choosing a fragrance for yourself, let alone someone else!

With that in mind, we’ve put together this list of the Top 3 Fragrances for every type of dad. So, whether the dad you’re buying for is a sporty or sensitive type, choosing a great scent for them will be a breeze. Here, we’ll list our top suggestions for each dad, and give you a brief explanation of the main notes (as identified by other customers) to help with your decision making.

Sporty Dad

You could be forgiven for thinking that the football-loving, racecar-watching dads out there wouldn’t be well catered for when it comes to fragrance. Boy oh boy, you’d be wrong! So popular are fragrances aimed at the sporty (or sport appreciating) man, that there’s a whole genre dedicated to that audience. Sports fragrances tend to be very clean, with citrus or oceanic notes. Here are our top three recommendations:

Prada Luna Rossa Sport
A fresh, bright fragrance, Luna Rossa Sport is as sophisticated as the bottle it comes in. With only five notes, it’s simple yet perfectly balanced: lavender, vanilla, tonka bean, juniper berries and ginger – this is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme
A warm, clean scent, Issey Miyake is renowned for creating modern fashions and this scent stays true to the brand. Dominant notes in this fragrance are yuzu (a Japanese citrus), lemon, blue lotus, Tahitian vetiver, bergamot and nutmeg.

Ralph Lauren Polo Sport
An oldie but a goodie, Ralph Lauren Polo Sport has been incredibly popular since its release in 1994. The main notes that shine through in this fragrance are mint, aldehydes (fresh, clean scent), lavender, seagrass and bergamot.

Suited Dad

For men who work in an office setting, finding the right fragrance can be a balancing act. Powerful, without being overbearing. Confident, without being arrogant. Warm, without being sensual. See what we mean?! Thankfully, there’s no shortage of fantastic fragrances aimed at the professional man. Here are just a few of our favourites:

Floris No.89
A name synonymous with James Bond thanks to writer Ian Fleming’s adoration of all things Floris, this quintessentially English fragrance has notes of lavender, rose, orange, bergamot, neroli and geranium.

Trussardi Riflesso
An easy-to-wear Italian fragrance, Riflesso’s main notes are tonka bean, green apple, leather, violet leaves and lavender. Ideal for a man who doesn’t like woody fragrances, this is free of the woody base notes so often used in men’s fragrances.

Guerlain Homme
A fresh and warm fragrance, Guerlain Homme consists of spicy mint, lime and rum notes layered over a floral, cedar and vetiver base. Warm and soft from day to night.

Sensitive Dad

Not all men want to smell stereotypically masculine and musky. In fact, many of them would much prefer lighter, floral notes offset against a fragrant wood such as cedar or oak. Finding a well-balanced fragrance for the sensitive man can be like finding a needle in a haystack – but we’ve narrowed down our favourites.

Evody Parfums Rêve D’Anthala
Inspired by Madagascan beaches, Rêve D’Anthala is a sweet, sensual unisex fragrance. Orchid, caramel, vanilla and amberwood provide the warmth, while petitgrain and yellow mandarin keep it fresh. You’ll be wanting to steal this one for yourself!

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01
An incredibly popular unisex fragrance, Molecule 01 is a tad difficult to describe! It’s categorised as a Woody Floral Musk, but only contains one note: Iso E Super. This synthetic compound is clean, light and airy and smells slightly different depending on the wearer.

Miller Harris Lumière Dorée
A unisex fragrance, Lumière Dorée is floral without being sweet. Neroli, bitter orange and petitgrain hit you first, with amber, vetiver, white musk and cashmere wood rounding off the base.

Intrepid Dad

When he’s not planning to climb up the nearest mountain, he’s researching destinations abroad. The Intrepid Dad appreciates global cuisines, cultures and the varied sights, sounds and smells that he experiences along the way. With interesting notes not found in run-of-the-mill fragrances, the following options are perfectly suited.

Montblanc Explorer
Not only does Montblanc Explorer smell fantastic, but the bottle is absolutely gorgeous too. Bergamot and pink pepper take the top notes, while leather, ambroxan and akigalawood anchor the fragrance.

Paco Rabanne Invictus Aqua
The perfect fragrance for Spring/Summer, Invictus Aqua is a reimagined version of the popular 2016 edition of the same name. Drawing inspiration from both land and sea, Invictus Aqua has dominant violet, grapefruit, violet leaf and sea notes, with a thoroughly woody base.

Davidoff Adventure
Exotic and spicy, Davidoff Adventure is inspired by the wilderness. With notes of pimento, black pepper, vetiver, cedar and sesame, it wouldn’t be out of place on a lumberjack (in a good way).

Classic Dad

For older gents or men who don’t often experiment with their fragrance, finding a suitable gift can be a tad tricky. Instead of opting for anything too modern, stick with brands and fragrances that have stood the test of time. You won’t go wrong with any of the three following options.

Creed Aventus
An “old school” fragrance, Creed Aventus ranks highly in the most praised men’s perfumes on the market. Though classic, it’s far from boring, with prominent notes including pineapple, birch, musk, blackcurrant and oakmoss.

Versace The Dreamer
Another highly popular fragrance among those with refined tastes, The Dreamer by Versace balances floral and herbal notes. Iris, juniper, flax, lily and tarragon rest on a base of amber and tobacco blossom.

Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de l’Homme
You can’t go wrong with Yves Saint Laurent, and La Nuit de l’Homme is no exception. A warm and spicy, powdery fragrance, cardamom is the first scent you’ll notice, followed by lavender, cedar, bergamot, caraway and vetiver.

Why SPF Matters And What You Need To Know

If you read any of our articles over spring and summer, you’ll know we harp on a lot about the importance of SPF. But let’s face it, while most of us know that we should be using an SPF product, we don’t really know the ins and outs of why.

Well, it’s time for all that to change. By understanding how SPF is determined and what it actually means, we can all make sure we’re making the right decisions to protect our skin in both the short and long-term. Let’s unravel some of the mystery around SPF products.

If you’re interested in sun protection, you may also want to read our article on Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.

What is SPF?

SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor – it’s the way that your protection from ultraviolet rays is measured. It’s important to note here that the SPF only takes into account UVB rays, but we’ll discuss why this matters in more detail a bit later.

The SPF rating is a universal measurement that all sunscreen products are ranked against to give more clarity to consumers as to how much UVB protection they can expect from their purchase.

Broadly speaking, an SPF 15 sunscreen allows you to have 15x longer sun exposure without the risk of burning. So, if under normal conditions the time taken to burn is 10 minutes, an SPF 15 would extend this to 2.5 hours.

Of course, this should never be taken as a certainty, as many elements can reduce this time. Your skin colour, genetic makeup, global location and weather conditions can all impact how quickly you will burn, so SPF should only serve as a guideline.

How Is SPF Measured?

The SPF rating of a sunscreen product helps us to identify how much more protected our skin is than if we were wearing no sunscreen at all. If used exactly as directed, an SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, an SPF 30 blocks 97% and an SPF 50 blocks 98%. On the face of it, this might seem like a negligible difference, but let’s look at those figures a little closer.

If the sun puts out 100 photons (particle of radiation), this is how the various SPFs would stack up:

No SPF, 0% protection – 100 photos reach the skin

SPF 15, 93% protection – 7 photons reach the skin

SPF 30, 97% protection – 3 photons reach the skin

SPF 50, 98% protection – 2 photons reach the skin

So, using an SPF 30 product is twice as effective as an SPF 15, letting half as many photons reach the skin, while an SPF 50 is three times more effective as an SPF 15, letting only a third reach the skin. Considering that every particle of radiation can cause immense damage to your skin, this really matters.

Unfortunately, there is an unexpected risk to using a high SPF compared to a lower SPF. For some people, using a high SPF sunscreen produces a false sense of security, leading them to spend longer in the sun, not reapplying regularly and not seeking shade. This can result in more sun damage than if they had used a lower SPF and taken more care.

So, while a high SPF does offer better protection, your own actions can have just as significant an impact on your skin’s protection.

UVA vs UVB Rays

Another thing to be aware of when thinking about sun protection is that the SPF rating of a product only refers to its protection against UVB rays, not UVA. The sun actually creates three different types of radioactive ultraviolet ray, UVA, UVB and UVC.

UVB rays are what sunscreen protects against, and what the SPF label relates to. While most UVB is filtered by the atmosphere, what does reach the Earth damages the superficial, outermost layer of our skin. UVB rays cause sunburn and significantly increase the risk of skin cancers.

UVA rays account for roughly 95% of the UV rays that reach the Earth. While they were once considered harmless, we now know that UVA penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB rays, causing ageing of the skin and wrinkling. UVA rays are also what creates a suntan, which is actually our skin trying (poorly) to defend itself against damage. Recent studies have also indicated that UVA rays may create further risk of skin cancers.

While UVC rays are the most harmful form of radiation emitted by the sun, it is filtered through the atmosphere and doesn’t reach the Earth’s surface.

As you can see from the information above, it isn’t only UVB we need to worry about, UVA rays are just as much cause for concern. For this reason, it’s important to look for sunscreens which are labelled as “broad spectrum” or “full-spectrum”. These products include ingredients designed to deflect UVA rays as well as UVB.

How Often Should You Reapply?

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends opting for broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreens with an SPF of 30+ for any extended time spent outdoors. Irrespective on the SPF, the correct application is key. The average adult should apply about a shot glass worth, or two tablespoons, 30 minutes before going outside. The sunscreen should then be reapplied every two hours, or more frequently if sweating or swimming.

What Types Of SPF Products Are There?

Any area of your body that is exposed to sunlight would ideally be protected from UV rays. While this can be achieved by wearing long clothing, a hat and seeking shade, most of us are likely to, at some point, want to enjoy full sunshine without additional layers – that’s where SPF protection comes in.

There are five main categories of SPF: Hair, Lips, Face, Body, Child.

Hair

Believe it or not, the UV rays and heat from the sun affects our hair as well as our skin. Though it doesn’t cause the same health concerns, UV damage to hair can leave it dry, frizzy and untameable.

Lips

The skin on our lips is only 3 to 5 layers thick, compared to around 16 layers on the rest of the body. This makes our lips much more susceptible to burning. Using a lip balm or lipstick with SPF protection is an absolute must for this reason.

Face

Our face is exposed to more sunshine than most other areas of our body, but it’s also the area of the body that is most susceptible to sensitivity, dryness, acne or other skin complaints. For this reason, complexion specific sunscreens are a great choice.

Body

Providing overall coverage on all areas that are exposed to the sun, body sunscreens are designed with a range of activities in mind. With SPFs ranging from 15 to 50+ and in a range of textures, there’s something for everybody.

Child

SPF sunscreen for children is designed using gentler formulations that prioritise sensitivity. For this reason, it is often also recommended for adults with particularly sensitive skin, such as those suffering from eczema or dermatitis.
