How To: Get Date Night Ready

Whether you’re new to a relationship or are trying to bring some romance back into your life, adding date night as a regular fixture in your calendar is a must. But if you’re anything like us, the pressure of getting all dolled up for a meal out with the other half can seem like more effort than it’s worth.

And it’s not just married date night grinches that find the build-up overwhelming. If you’re newly dating, the pressure to look just right, not too overdressed, not too casual, is a minefield.

Here’s a handy guide to getting date night ready with just a few easy tips.

1. “Be prepared”

Those boy scouts are onto a good thing with this handy motto. If you know it’s date night, leave yourself time to get ready. There is nothing worse than sweatily trying to apply eyeliner as your Uber waits outside. For bonus points, try to get to bed early the night before so you don’t find yourself dozing during the dessert course. A relaxing fragrance, like the Pillow Spray from ThisWorks, can be a great help for encouraging sleep.

2. Defuzz, or don’t

If you play your cards right, date night could easily become date morning. With this in mind it’s worth a last minute defuzz, if that’s the way you usually roll. Whether you epilate, shave or wax, avoid any unwelcome razor rash by applying a good quality moisturiser to the skin post-treatment. Clarins Moisture-Rich Body Lotion with Shea Butter is one fantastic choice.

Au naturale? You’re good to go!

3. Keep your makeup simple

First of all, let me preface this by saying if you enjoy putting on a full face of makeup before you go out, you do you girl! We are not here to tell you the ‘right’ way to get ready for date night, simply how to make the whole process as easy and breezy as possible.

With that in mind,  keeping your makeup simple is a great choice. A good mascara and bright lip (preferably kiss-proof) can go a long way, and take seconds to apply. Unless you have time to kill, date night is not the time to experiment with new eyeshadow techniques or to try out contouring. Play it safe, keep it simple and stay you,  your last-minute jitters will thank you.

4. Let your crown shine

Your hair is your crowning glory, make sure it’s looked after. Again, simplicity is key on date night, particularly if you have a small window to get ready in. A quick squirt of antifrizz or volumising spray will ensure you look great the whole night through, finished with a shot of setting hairspray depending on whether you plan on breaking some moves on the dance floor.

5. Pack the essentials

Finding the balance when it comes to packing a handbag is an intricate art that can take decades to master. However, a few tips for date night: you probably don’t need your entire purse complete with 4 different coffee rewards cards, but you probably do need gum (because garlic bread shouldn’t stand between you and your sweetheart), that new lipstick, your phone, and, ahem, any relevant protection, aka umbrella.

6. Treat every sense

We’ve saved this one until last because it’s too often forgotten. Smell is an incredibly powerful sense but can often be overlooked when it comes to romance. Before you head out the door, make sure you smell great, but don’t overdo it. When it comes to perfume, less is more. Which fragrance is best for date night? One that fills you with confidence. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our list of favourites below, shop all our fragrance by clicking here or try our fragrance finder to help you be date night ready.

Around the Clock Skincare with thisworks

If you haven’t heard of circadian rhythm, here’s a quick guide form thisworks as to what it is and how you can tailor your skincare routine around it.

Circadian rhythm is one of your body’s natural body clocks and it dictates your bodily functions: temperature, hormone release, metabolism, sleep, and cognitive function. thisworks consider themselves experts in circadian rhythm – they know how it affects your sleep patterns and what your skin needs in different phases, so we spoke to them to find out exactly how we become more in tune with our own circadian rhythm and the benefits that it brings.

thisworks split the circadian rhythm into 4 phases: night, wake-up, daytime and evening. They started with the night phase because they believe that it is the most important of them all and know that the saying “with sleep comes beauty” is true! Here is their walk through of around the clock skin care:

The Night Phase

We believe that sleep should be the first step in every skincare routine, as this is the time when the skin repairs and regenerates. However, skin also suffers from trans-epidermal water loss (water loss through the skin), which means that it might get dehydrated.

When you can’t sleep or you suffer with broken sleep, these repairs can’t be made as well as they should. Beautiful skin really does start with a good night’s sleep.

How can we help?

Can’t sleep? Try our award-winning deep sleep pillow spray, to help reduce sleep anxiety and improve sleep quality. Our unique blend of 100% natural fragrance of lavender, camomile and vetivert has been proven to work by fMRI studies.

deep sleep pillow spray - thisworks

89% fell asleep faster than normal.*

*In a study of 100 subjects and 100 ex-prescription users compared to no product.

If you can’t stay asleep, try our sleep plus pillow spray to restore healthy sleep patterns and support a longer, less interrupted sleep. It’s slow-release and motion-activated system provides sleep support throughout the night and it is proven to give you up to 2 hours of extra sleep a night**.Sleep plus pillow spray - thisworks

96% had a less disturbed sleep***.

**In a study of 23 subjects, use of sleep plus pillow spray resulted in a mean increase in the total sleep time of two hours and three minutes per subject compared to no product.

***Independently tested on 200 participants with sleep problem, aged 18+ over a 14-day period, compared to a placebo.

The Wake-Up Phase

Upon waking, skin can be dull, dehydrated and irritated, and its barrier function might be impaired. The DNA repair is less active and skin is susceptible to UV damage and needs to moisturised and protected.

Morning Expert - thisworks

Re-hydrate with our morning expert hyaluronic serum, containing a 2% hyaluronic complex with Vitamin C to brighten and plump tired looking skin. Next up, whatever the weather, make sure to wear a broad spectrum SPF. Try our in transit skin defence SPF 30 for everyday, UV protection.

The Daytime Phase

During the day your skin takes its own measures to protect itself from day-to-day stress and  environmental aggressors. Stress levels can fluctuate throughout the day and busy skin needs support to make it through the day looking and feeling healthy.

Stress check - thisworks

Our Perfect body care range, with a shortlist of skin-loving ingredients helps your skin to remain radiant and energised throughout the day, boosting your confidence. And if the day is getting a bit too much take a deep breath of our stress check breathe in, containing eucalyptus, frankincense and lavender essential oils to help clear the mind and reduce tension.

The Evening Phase

This phase is all about preparation for your nighttime repair. Hydration and DNA repair is boosted and skin is more receptive to absorption of topical treatments, making it a great time to use skincare with super-active ingredients. However, skin has also accumulated environmental pollutants and needs to be thoroughly cleansed.

Clay Mask - thisworks

Try the deep cleansing heros from our Evening Detox range, which blends purifying actives to naturally decongest with calming ingredients to help reduce redness. Our anti-pollution purifying mask with malachite and kaolin is a 10- minute skin detox, helping to protect against environmental aggressors.

Not too sure where to start?

pillow sprays - thisworks

With sleep comes beauty, so we always recommend starting your skincare routine with a good night’s sleep! With thisworks range of natural pillow sprays, there is a solution for each sleep concern.

Dealing With Hormonal Acne: How To Recognise And Treat it

Hormonal acne is exactly what it sounds like – it’s acne that occurs due to fluctuations in your hormones. Although men and women can both be affected by acne, hormonal acne is more common in women, because of factors like menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, which bring surges in hormone levels. While hormonal acne is often associated with fluctuating hormones during teenage years, it’s actually most like to strike in your 20s, when women are most hormonally active. You might be surprised to know that over 90% of the world’s population will suffer from acne at some point in their life, making it one of the most common disorders treated by healthcare providers.

Aside from the physical symptoms of acne, this skin disorder can also have an emotional and psychological impact too. Studies have shown that acne can affect a person’s mood, self-esteem, and quality of life. In fact, 95% percent of individuals with acne in the UK say that it affects their daily lives.

What Causes Hormonal Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that happens when your sebaceous glands (tiny glands near the surface of your skin) make too much sebum (an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands). The excess sebum bands together with dead skin cells clog your pores and form acne lesions, which include blackheads and whiteheads.

Hormonal Acne

Fluctuations in your oestrogen and progesterone levels are the main causes of hormonal acne. These fluctuations can vary greatly during your menstrual cycle. Changes in the ratio, or balance of these hormones can affect your testosterone levels, which in turn can also contribute to the appearance of acne. Stress plays an important part in hormonal acne too – when cortisol levels go up as part of your body’s stress response, your skin produces more sebum, which can lead to breakouts.

Acne can also be caused or made worse by Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Menopause and Increased androgen levels, which are hormones that play a role in the development of male traits. These hormones are present in both men and women.

Recognising Hormonal Acne

If the below apply, there’s a good chance you’re suffering from hormonal acne.

  • You have pimples that appear on your chin and jawline. Increased hormone levels in your body can stimulate your oil glands—and most of them can be found around your chin area. Although the chin and jawline are really common places for hormonal acne, it can also flare-up on the side of your face or down your neck.
  • You have monthly breakouts. Hormonal acne follows a cycle – a lot like women’s menstrual cycles. Postmenopausal women can experience hormonal acne too, as they are still susceptible to monthly fluctuations in their oestrogen and progesterone levels.
  • You’re under a lot of stress. A build-up of too much stress can lead to flare-ups, as cortisol (the stress hormone) can put your other hormones out of whack – another reason you should try to relax and de-stress on a regular basis. What’s more, if you’re stressed, you might not be looking after yourself quite as much as you should, and your skincare routine and diet can suffer, making breakouts more likely.

Hormonal Acne Treatment

Although hormonal acne can leave you feeling like your skin has a mind of its own, there are several options to help treat it.

Contraception

Oral contraceptives have compounds that target the hormones which cause acne. So if you aren’t already on the Pill, consider asking your doctor whether they’d recommend it to help treat your acne

Retinoids - Hormonal Topical retinoids

If you have mild to moderate acne, you can use topical retinoids, which work by removing dead skin cells to prevent them building up inside hair follicles. They usually come in a gel or cream and should be applied once a day before bed. You can get retinal-containing products over the counter, but for stronger concentrations you’ll need to get them prescribed by a dermatologist or doctor.

Diet

What goes into your body can also affect you and your skin. Although the relationship between diet and acne hasn’t yet been firmly established, what we do know is that some foods can help alleviate skin inflammation, which can cause acne. Foods high in antioxidants, such as lentils and green leafy vegetables, and Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish (salmon, herring, and mackerel) can help reduce skin inflammation. You could also opt for an Omega-3 supplement if you don’t eat a lot of fatty fish.

Non-Comedogenic Makeup - Hormonal Non-comedogenic makeup

Be extra kind to your skin and take care when choosing makeup. Go for non-comedogenic types – makeup that won’t clog your pores – which in turn should minimise the chance of flare-ups.

5-step skincare routine

Committing to a good skincare routine can help treat or alleviate hormonal acne. Try this 5-step routine to take care of your skin and minimise the chance of acne flare-ups.

Cleansers - Hormonal 1. Double cleanse

Cleansing your skin helps to keep sebum from building up. Double cleansing is when you first cleanse the skin with an oil cleanser, followed by a second cleanser which is either foam or cream-based. Why double cleanse? Using an oil cleanser first helps to break down the makeup, dirt, and oil on your skin which builds up during the day. Cleansing your skin properly will make sure you get the benefits of the other products which follow.

Steam - Hormonal 2. Exfoliate/Steam

Exfoliation is key to any skincare routine. Unfortunately, dead skin cells re-accumulate every day, so this isn’t a one-time thing.  If you have super-sensitive skin, start off with a mild exfoliant (lactic acid), and use it just once a week for a few weeks, slowly working your way up to 3 to 4 times per week. Steaming can also help open and unclog your pores. Simply boil some water, pour it into a bowl and add essential oils or herbs like chamomile or lavender. Steam your face with a towel over your head for up to 10 minutes. Don’t steam your skin more than once a week.

Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser

Orange Extract All Skin Types 125ml

Our Price: £18.35

Face Masks - Hormonal 3. Mask

Face masks help to remove dead skin cells and other debris that can accumulate in pores and contribute to breakouts. Using a clay mask after steaming can work wonders – your pores will be open, so the mask can get in and do its work more easily, drawing out dirt and impurities.

Elizabeth Arden Face Mask & Exfoliator

Toners - Hormonal 4. Tone

This is an important step after cleansing your skin because toner helps to close your open pores and remove any final traces of dirt or makeup. Follow the instructions on your acne-fighting skin care products carefully and don’t be tempted to apply too much at once, this can lead to further irritation. Remember to check with your GP or dermatologist to make sure you’re using the most effective products for your skin type.

Sisley Toners

Moisturiser - Hormonal5. Moisturise

Whether you’re prone to dry or oily skin, either can aggravate your acne, making moisturising an important step in your skincare routine. Using a moisturiser every day is a great way to seal the moisture in your skin. If you have oily skin, look for oil-free moisturisers, and opt for lotions and serums rather than thick creams. If your skin is prone to dryness, go for a more hydrating cream. Keep in mind that your skin might be dehydrated rather than dry – your skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time, as dehydration is a lack of water, not oil. Dehydration can be caused by factors such as weather, pollution, and diet, as well as the overuse of harsh skin care products. Dehydrated skin looks dull, feels tight or rough, may be sensitive, and can show fine lines. If you have dehydrated skin, switch to more gentle skincare products, don’t over-wash your face (no more than twice a day), and avoid irritating ingredients like essential oils or alcohol.

Toolkit to Lower Your Anxiety

By Nicola Elliott, Founder NEOM Organics London

I’m not a calm person, I wish I was. I am a full-on ball of energy (and have burnt the candle at both ends) kind-of-girl. My default state is busy, busy, BUSY AND it’s probably why I suffered (and still do) from anxiety, which happens to be one of the reasons I turned to blending essentials oils to help. The NEOM Lifestyle Audit from March this year revealed that a third of the UK population suffer from stress on a regular basis – so seems it’s not just me!

So, I turned to essential oils and found blending the right ones were a massive help. In particular the blend I started with was what we now call Real Luxury with 24 different oils to work their absolute hardest for you if you’re prone to stress, or like me, anxiety. If you are not a naturally calm person, then I believe you have to learn to create calm with modern remedies for modern life. I am able to manage it every day with these oils and a bit of a wellbeing tool kit.

In a recent NEOM wellbeing article we interviewed Emily Wysock-Wright – a wellness expert and founder of self re-discovery programme, Adira who says her top tips for lowering anxiety are things like having a bath; “this is my place to cleanse my thoughts and gain perspective. Essential oils can be great for anxiety and relieving stress and I love adding lavender or chamomile to my bath.” Says Emily. She recommends trying a supplement and eating chocolate too.

It’s really important to note that what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another, so you have to find your own tool kit. It takes time to get it right BUT here are a few things that work for me…

  1. Move. Yep exercise. I love the saying that our friends over at FRAME have which is ‘support your local endorphin dealer’ – which is so true. Endorphins are good for everything!
  2. Meditate. I use the Calm app when I can (this is one of the hardest things for me to do!)
  3. Use NEOM Real Luxury oils amongst it all. My fav’s are the Magnesium Body Buttercandle (or the Essential Oil Blend in my Wellbeing Pod if time is limited and I need an instant boost) and I keep the On The Go Mist and Pulse Point handy (and use the 7/11 breathing technique alongside). Wherever I go, they go!
  4. Supplements – Magnolia Rhodiola.
  5. Reading. I find good books can reside my brain! I rate Solve for Happy by Mo Gawdat.

Was this helpful? If so, shop all Neom products or continue reading more on our blog.

Time For You

Hands up if you’re getting enough “me time” in your week? Anyone? That’s what we thought. Taking time to prioritise your own physical and mental wellbeing can often feel like an indulgence. There’s washing to be done, dishes to do, box sets to catch up on… we get it! But the old adage that you can’t pour from an empty cup really is true, and something all of us, particularly if we have family members depending on us, should take heed of.

Where does one even start on this self-care journey? Fret not allbeauty readers, as always, we’re here to point you in the right direction. Here are a few easy tasks you can incorporate into your day to make sure you stay looking and feeling great all week long.

Monday: Start the Week Hydrated

Eugh, Mondays. The weekend is officially over and its straight back to the daily grind. Do yourself a favour and make Monday the day you really focus on hydrating yourself.

Water Splash Wide - Time for You

Too many of us dip in and out of dehydration simply because we forget to sip on a bottle of water throughout the day. Well, no more! Starting with just one day a week, focus on getting enough water into your system, the rest will follow.

For bonus points, pop this Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Hydrating Mist into your bag and give your face a spritz throughout the day to hydrate from the outside-in.

Tuesday: Hair Care and Chill

Combine two self-care winners into one, by taking care of your tresses while enjoying some downtime on the sofa. We can’t all get to the salon regularly (or even bi-annually, ahem), but with such a great range of hair treatments available, its never been easier to bring the salon experience into the comfort of your own home.

Hair care - Time for You

One of our favourites is multi-award winning Olaplex Hair Perfector No.3, designed to repair and restore the hair’s cuticle. And better still, it works best when left for at least 10 minutes, so grab a cuppa, put your feet up, and let it do its thing.

Wednesday: Put Your Best Face Forward

You’ve made it to hump day, the weekend is in sight! Prep that skin for whatever the rest of the week throws at you with an at-home facial.

Face Mask - Time for You

Now, in a perfect world we’d all be regularly exfoliating and using a face mask, but let’s face it, sometimes life gets in the way! Once a week, make skincare your priority and take the time to give yourself a quality facial. Cleanse as normal, then use an appropriate exfoliator to remove any dead cells and dirt, before applying a moisturising face mask. Your skin will thank you!

Thursday: Early To Bed, Early to Rise

We know it’s not the most glamorous form of self-care, but getting an early night can make a world of difference to your energy levels, mood and general sense of wellbeing. At least once a week, try to climb into bed an hour earlier than usual. In general, we need around 8 hours of sleep a night, but another few hours will only do you good!

Sleep - Time for You

Changing your sleep habits can be difficult, so if you find yourself wide-eyed and staring at the ceiling, try creating an environment more conducive to sleep. Settling down with a good book can tip the scales toward sleep, and relaxing scents can also help lull you off to the land of nod.

Friday: Soak Up The Weekend

Ooooh yeah! Do you have that weekend feeling yet? Well, there’s no better way to say farewell to the working week than by washing your stress away with a good long soak in the tub. Nothing is quite as relaxing as submerging yourself into a hot bath. Nothing, that is, except for submerging yourself into a hot bath that has added sumptuousness.

Bath and Body - Time for You

Get all sudsy with one of our foamy bath soaks, unwind aching muscles with a fragrant bath oil, or feel the fizz with one of the gorgeous range of Bomb Cosmetics bath bombs. Additional fizz in the form of a glass of wine optional, but always recommended. It’s officially the weekend, after all.

Mani/Pedi - Time for You

Jojoba

As well as being incredibly fun to say, jojoba (ho-HO-ba) is a fantastic natural ingredient that is often used in the world of hair and skin care. Ever wondered what this funny-sounding ingredient actually does? Well, you’re in the right place.  Here’s everything you need to know about jojoba.

What Is Jojoba?

Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) is a plant that grows in dry regions of northern Mexico, southern California and southern Arizona. While the plant itself is fairly unassuming, it’s the Jojoba seeds that hold the beneficial properties. About 50% of the seed consists of wax and oil, which is extracted from the harvested Jojoba and used in beauty and natural medicine.

Native Americans have used Jojoba oil to treat wounds going back centuries, but the use of Jojoba in beauty began as recently as the 1970s.

How Does It Work?

The use of jojoba in the beauty industry was fueled by the desire to move towards natural ingredients. Prior to 1970, the oil of choice in many cosmetic products was whale oil. When the importing of whale oil was outlawed, manufacturers began to look at alternative oils that had similar benefits, jojoba made the top of that list.

Jojoba oil is an emollient which soothes the skin and relieves dryness without blocking pores. Because of it’s fantastic lubricating and moisturising properties, jojoba is now an ingredient of thousands of hair and skin care products, particularly those with a focus on using natural ingredients. You’re most likely to find jojoba oil in moisturiser, body lotion and shampoo and conditioner.

Who Can Benefit From Using Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba oil can be used on all skin types, either as a treatment or for moisturising.

Jojoba oil acts in a very similar way to the natural oil produced by our skin, Sebum. Because of this, it is non-comedogenic (pore-clogging) and the body reacts well to its presence on the skin. Many of our allbeauty customers find that by using a clay mask which contains jojoba a few times a week, they notice a reduction in their blemishes.

People with dry skin may find jojoba oil particularly beneficial as it has been shown to alleviate conditions such as Psoriasis and help to soothe chapped, dry patches of skin. It is also safe to be used on sensitive skin due to its sebum-imitating qualities.

There is some debate as to whether jojoba oil can aid in hair regrowth, but a large number of people believe that it may do just that. Jojoba oil has been shown to unclog hair follicles when used directly on the scalp, either as a pure oil or in a hair product. One of the reasons for hair loss may be due to blocked follicles, it stands to reason that jojoba oil may help those battling premature hair loss.

How Breasts Change Through Life

Big or small, firm or soft, love them or loathe them, breasts are part and parcel of our genetic makeup. While the amount of breast tissue may vary, we all have breasts in one form or another whether we’re male, female or non-binary. However, we’ll be discussing the physical changes that occur in our breasts throughout three of the main stages of a woman’s life; pregnancy, motherhood, and the menopause.

What Makes A Breast, A Breast?

The term ‘breast’ actually describes the internal area that lies beneath the nipple, and above the pectoral muscle. It consists of fatty tissue, milk-producing glands, connective tissue, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels and lymph nodes.

At birth, we all begin with a layer of fatty tissue and milk-producing glands in this area, and in fact, until puberty girls and boys have the same tissue makeup. It’s only after puberty that girls grow additional tissue and begin to develop what we traditionally think of as breasts.

Father and baby - breasts

Fun Fact: Biological men have all the equipment to be able to breastfeed a child. The only thing missing is the right balance of hormones needed to kickstart production. There have been many documented cases of men inducing lactation in order to nourish their infants.

Changes in Breasts During Pregnancy

From the moment you fall pregnant, your body begins to prepare and your breasts are one of the first to leap to action. In fact, for many women, it’s pain and tenderness in their breasts that is the first symptom of pregnancy.

Breasts grow an average of 50% over the course of pregnancy, as the internal structures that were lying dormant get ready to play their role in nursing a new baby and your body as a whole readies itself for motherhood. From around 15 weeks, the milk-producing breast cells become active, and by week 22 they begin to produce milk.

Milk - breasts

With all of this going on, it’s hardly a surprise that breasts become a bigger focus of daily life, with seemingly endless shopping for new maternity bras, the constant itch of taught skin, wishing stretch marks away, and the odd leaky boob!

Many women enjoy the boost in fullness and cup size during pregnancy and manage to alleviate the side-effects by using skin oil designed for stretch marks to soothe any itching and improve skin elasticity.

The Role of Breasts in Motherhood

After pregnancy, hormones begin to return to normal, and, if a woman chooses to breastfeed, after a few months of nursing the breasts will swing less extremely between full and empty. Lack of breast density is one of the top complaints from mothers postnatally. It’s a common misconception that breastfeeding is responsible for these changes – that in short, breastfeeding gives you saggy boobs. This isn’t the case at all, in fact, the most dramatic changes in breast fullness can often be found in women who haven’t breastfed at all.

Woman breastfeeding - breasts

After around six months of breastfeeding, breasts begin to lose some of their stored fatty tissue and slowly decrease in size, though will often still be larger than pre-pregnancy. When you wean completely, whether this is after 2 days, 2 months or 2 years, the breasts begin to revert to their original size – this process takes around 3 months. So, all pregnant woman will go through dramatic changes to their breast size, but the difference is whether you lose that fatty tissue gradually over a longer period, or quickly over a shorter period. For some women, their skin and tissue snap back to being firm and pert, but for the majority, emptier, softer breasts are a reality.

All is not lost though, as there are a range of products designed to help improve firmness in the breasts once you are no longer pregnant or breastfeeding. Here’s one of our favourites:

Menopause and Breasts: What To Expect

As you enter the menopause, the hormones oestrogen and progesterone begin to peak significantly, much like they do during puberty. This can cause various changes in the shape, size and density of your breasts.

For some woman, the size of their breasts will increase, for others, they’ll decrease, all depending on the combination of hormones being produced by the body. One common experience of most women experiencing menopause is that most will also notice that the amount of glandular tissue in their breasts will lessen and be replaced by more fatty tissue, this leads to a further lack of fullness.

Woman keeping herself cool - breasts

From around the age of 30 skin begins to lose its elasticity, which is why fine lines and wrinkles become more commonplace. The same is true for the skin on your breasts. Combined with the fluctuations in size over the past decades, the skin loses much of its ability to “bounce back” and so breasts can become more drooped in appearance.

While all this may sound like losing your pert breasts of yesteryear is a sad inevitability, it’s all the more reason to love the skin you’re in today. And while we can’t stop time, we can slow down its effects, here are a few of our recommended products for improving the appearance of your bust.

Glycolic Acid

Along with salicylic acid, glycolic acid is one of the most researched of the hydroxy acids used in skincare. Toners, creams and masks containing glycolic acid are popping up everywhere, with even high-street brands jumping on the bandwagon. But who can most benefit from glycolic acid? And what should you look for when making a purchase?

Read on for everything you need to know about using glycolic acid in your skincare routine, another of the organic acids which are known to improve skin health. .

What Is Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic acid is an organic compound with acidic properties, very similar to lactic acid. It is one of the smallest of the alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), meaning that it’s water-soluble and can penetrate easily into the skin.

With fantastic exfoliating properties, high-potency (10%+) glycolic peels have become a must-have beauty treatment, but these are best done by a trained cosmetic professional. That doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune to feel the benefits though! Thankfully, glycolic products up to an 8% concentration are readily available for you to use from the comfort of home.

How Does It Work?

Like other AHAs, glycolic acid works by dissolving the ‘glue’ that bonds old skin cells to the surface. By breaking down these bonds, dull, dry skin is sloughed away, revealing the smoother, brighter skin below.

Alongside its exfoliating properties, glycolic acid also stimulates the production of collagen and binds moisture to the skin. Combined, these functions encourage skin which is hydrated, radiant and less susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles. Sold? Us too!

Who Can Benefit From Using Glycolic Acid?

With varying concentrations and products available, there’s a glycolic acid for all skin types, but it’s considered particularly beneficial for those with aging, acne-prone, or uneven skin.

Glycolic acid is generally considered to be stronger than some of the other AHAs, and so if you have particularly sensitive skin or are new to using acid in your skincare regime, we suggest starting with a weaker AHA such as lactic acid.

If using glycolic acid for the first time, a good way to start is by using it sparingly and gradually increasing your use over time. This allows your skin to become accustomed and makes it easier for you to review the condition of your skin.

What Products Contain Glycolic Acid?

There’s no shortage of options when it comes to skincare products that include glycolic acid. The concentrations and formulations can vary greatly, so choosing the right product will depend largely on your skin’s sensitivity and what potency you’re looking for. Ideally, look for a glycolic acid concentration of 5-8% to ensure you’ll reap the benefits.

With that in mind, here are a few of our favourite glycolic acid products, including a mask, toner and cream.

Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Solutions Toner 8%

With the 8% Glycolic Solutions Toner from Peter Thomas Roth you can experience the smoothing and clarifying benefits of glycolic acid firsthand. With camomile and aloe vera, this soothing toner is well balanced and great for all skin types.

Shoosh or Shine?

One of the things we love most about our growing silver community is that no two heads of hair are the same. Some of us have an icy halo, others have a chic smattering of salt & pepper, but every single grey is different. For some of us our white hair is finer and thinner and for others it’s more a question of taming the wild grey strands with a mind of their own.  That’s why we’re aware that not everyone needs the same products to care for their hair.

Grey hair can have a tendency to be coarse and wiry and although everyday care may be similar from person to person, what you need depends on the thickness and length of our hair, our lifestyle and many other factors. I don’t use a conditioner every time I wash because my hair doesn’t need it. I have a ‘messy layered’  crop and for the kind of volume and movement I want in my hair, our Shooshing Creme does the trick. If it feels a touch dry I use our Luminous Conditioner from mid hair to ends as its lustrous formula is great for strengthening and gives your silver added shine.

Our advice is to not take blanket advice on your hair!  If you don’t need to condition every time, then don’t. If your hair works better a couple of days after a wash, then go with that. A good hair care regime is one that’s flexible and works for you and your hair.  A touch of Lifeshine Oil to smooth stray strands may be all the added moisture you need. A soak in the bath with our 3 minute Intense Lustre Mask may be perfect after a week of swimming in the pool or walking the dog in all weathers.  It’s up to you.

We only have 6 products in our range because we don’t think you need dozens.  We don’t make hairspray because I’m not prepared to ditch my favourite Elnett and I won’t create a product just for the sake of it.  I’m a Glorious Shampoo and Shooshing Creme woman with an occasional dabble in our other products depending on what I’m doing. Go your own way. “
