The Garden Guide

We don’t know about you, but having neglected our humble outdoor space for years, over the last few weeks it’s suddenly become a haven. With limited options and cabin fever setting in, time spent in the garden is quickly becoming the day’s highlight.

Whether you have sprawling country grounds or a tower block balcony, tending a green patch is great for your mental wellbeing. If you’ve never dug your fingers into the soil before, now is a great time to start, and we’re here to help set you up for success.

Seasoned gardener? We may not be able to teach you anything you don’t already know, but we do have some essential items to add to your toolkit.

Why Garden?

Need a little convincing that getting your hands dirty is worthwhile? We completely understand. For many of us, it’s only the uncertainty of the last few weeks that has made us realise how valuable growing your own fresh food could be. And as luck would have it, this is the perfect time of year to get started on your gardening journey.

Not only can gardening provide food for your family without having to venture to the supermarket, but it can also do wonders for your mental health. Nurturing something from seed to plant, connecting with the earth and letting go of ‘perfection’ is all part and parcel of becoming a gardener.

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” – Audrey Hepburn

Not green-fingered? Give gardening a try anyway. Best case scenario, you’ll end up with some beautiful homegrown fresh food. Worst case scenario, you’ll have spent more time outside in the fresh air and have a welcome distraction for a few weeks.

Gardening with Kids

If you have children at home, gardening is a great activity to involve them in. Allocate a special area that they’re in charge of, whether that’s a raised bed, or a paper cup on a windowsill – work with what you have. You’ll want to make sure you’re both equipped with sunhats and high SPF protection, as it’s easy to get so swept up in gardening you don’t notice how long you’ve been in the sunshine.

Gardening on a Budget

If gardening has never been your “thing” in the past, you’re probably hesitant to throw money at this potential new hobby – we get it. But it’s entirely possible to garden on a budget, using no additional materials than what you already have lying around. Take the seeds from your supermarket fruit and vegetables, keep them damp by placing them on wet cotton wool or a paper towel and pop them in a sunny spot to germinate.

Gardening Skincare Toolkit

The one downside to gardening is the battering your hands will take. Dirt pulls moisture from your skin, so between spending time handling soil and all the extra washing, your hands might take a beating. That’s where we come in.

1) Choose the right hand wash

When it comes to washing the soil from your hands, choosing the correct hand soap can make a big difference to your skin. Opt for an exfoliating variety to cut down the amount of time it takes to get your hands clean and remove every last trace of dirt.

One of our favourite soaps for gardening is Cowshed Restore Exfoliating Hand Wash. Fine grains of pumice uncover smooth, clean skin, while the sweet orange and peppermint oils bring the fresh fragrance of the garden into your home.

2) Lock in the moisture

If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that the only thing as important as hand washing is following up with lotion. Owners of dry, chapped hands around the world are currently nodding their heads in agreement. Placing a pump bottle of hand lotion in your bathroom will ensure you remember to put some much-needed moisture back into your hands after washing.

By now, you’ve probably already discovered our range of hand lotions, but if you’re still on the hunt, here are a few of our favourites:

3) Protect and maintain skin health

Regular maintenance is the best way to prevent chapped, cracked hands. One way to do this is by giving your hands a little boost as and when needed. If you find your hands are getting a little rough, use L’Occitane One Minute Hand Scrub once or twice a week to buff away calluses. It gently exfoliates with shea nut husks, and replaces moisturise with a combination of shea butter and apricot oil.

If your hands are particularly dry from gardening, it’s also worth investing in occasional hand treatments. Before bed, slather on a good layer of a thick, nourishing cream like Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Skin Protectant Cream or Weleda Skin Food. Getting to work as you sleep, both deeply hydrate your skin with a unique blend of nourishing ingredients.

4) Deal with any niggles as they appear

If all the extra kneeling and bending is taking a toll on your joints, nip those twinges in the bud straight away. A small ache can lead to other muscles overcompensating and create a wider issue, so if you start to feel pain, treat it at the source. The Organic Pharmacy Capsicum, Devil’s Claw & Ginger Cream uses natural ingredients to provide warming, nourishing relief from joint pain and smells amazing. Or, try new Cubid CBD Rejuvenate Stay Active Cream which reduces inflammation on a cellular level.

Gardening has always been an English pastime, and there’s no time like the present to become a part of the movement. We’d love to see snaps of your home garden, tag us on Instagram @allbeautyhq

How To Tips From Courtney

About Courtney

I started at allbeauty’s Guernsey salon 3 and a half years ago and I will become a qualified hairdresser this summer. My areas of interest as a hairdresser are interacting with clients and helping them achieve their desired look. I particularly enjoy working with colours and doing big colour changes. I also like doing hair updos for weddings and occasions and I was proud to be placed first in the Guernsey College of Further Education hair show 2019.

Detangling Your Hair

A lovely product from Shu Uemura, Art of Hair is the Create and Perfect Wonder Worker. Wonder Worker is the perfect product to help detangle hair, whilst helping with frizz and hydration. It boosts radiance and also adds silkiness to the hair. This product is perfect for when you’ve just washed your hair. Spray to your mid-lengths to get the perfect blow dry without any tangles!

Dealing With Stressed Hair

If you are struggling with distressed hair or hair prone to fall out, maybe due to stress, diet, medication, emotions or anything that makes you feel anxious, then my top recommendation is the Genesis Range from Kérastase. Fans of Kérastase will know that the brand offers targeted solutions for different hair types and the new range from Genesis does not disappoint. There are two types of shampoos in the Genesis range;  Kérastase Genesis Bain Nutri-Fortifiant, which is specifically targeted for dry hair needing extra nutrition and Kérastase Genesis Bain Hydra-Fortifiant, for normal hair. In the range you also have a beautiful blow dry spray which you spray into your mid-lengths to end after shampooing your hair with the Genesis Shampoo, Conditioner or Masque: this blow dry spray protects the hair up to 230 degrees heat which is perfect for the people who use daily heat on the hair for example (straighteners, curlers and blow drying)! This product also helps to detangle the hair to prevent further hair fall and has 24 hours protection against frizz.

Looking for a long term at home solution?

Kérastase Genesis Ampoules Cure Fortifantes Anti-Chute are specially designed as a six week care programme that you can undertake yourself. The product contains 10 x 6ml ampoules* of serum, designed for use daily over a six week period. Use after washing your hair with other products from the Genesis range for best results. Use once daily in the morning or before going to bed during a 6 week period. Break off the top of the ampoule to reveal the silicone applicator. Apply to the scalp, section by section, simultaneously pressing the button at the bottom of the ampoule. Do not rinse. *An ampoule is a small sealed capsule containing a liquid, offering the perfect amount of concentrated solution.

Maintenance for Blondes

Redken Colour Extend Blondage is a perfect Shampoo and Conditioner for blondes – and, as a bonus, is also available in a 1000ml supersize. Say goodbye to your brassy unwanted yellow/orange locks and say hello to shiny blonder hair. This shampoo has a beautiful violet pigment which will help take control of your blonde hair. It will help neutralise and reduce brassiness and also strengthen the hairs cuticle for less breakage with a triple acid protein complex. I would recommend using the Redken Colour Extend Blondage shampoo and conditioner twice a week depending on how many times a week you wash your hair but will also depend on the amount of toning you would want. This is the perfect Shampoo and Conditioner for you perfect blondes. Wearing suitable gloves, apply the shampoo on to wet hair and lather up and rinse well. Repeat as necessary, for maximum benefits leave the second lather of shampoo on the hair for approximately 3-5 minutes for amazing results and then rinse off. After shampooing, apply the conditioner and leave on, also for 3-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Fake Tan Manual – How to Get the Perfect Glow

Fake tan needn’t be tricky. So whether you’d rather not sit out in the sun, or need a bit of colour before you don that new bikini, our manual will guide you to the best home tanning products and help you tan like a Pro!

The secret to a great fake tan is making sure you have the right products. So before we begin, ask yourself two questions:

What kind of tan do I need? – A quick fix for pasty legs, a gentle glow or all-over serious colour?
How much time do I have? – Rushing from work, time to prepare?

Got your answers? Let’s get stuck in!

THE QUICK FIX INSTANT ‘TAN
Which Is…

Basically colour in a bottle. Smoothed over skin it gives immediate colour but washes off with soap (hoorah, no mitts or gloves!). All you need is a few minutes of drying time and you’re good to go.

Good For?

Office parties, last minute dates, unexpected swimming and “my legs look TERRIBLE” moments. Always have some in your cupboard!

Pros

  • Super-fast to apply, instant colour
  • Quick drying
  • Can usually be layered to get deeper colour
  • Needs soap to remove so no rain-related disasters

Cons

  •  Very temporary
  • Needs reapplication
  • Looks horrid going down the drain

How To Apply:

Bare hands are fine but a mitt or gloves are useful. Use quick, long strokes and blend by eye.

Benefit Hoola Body Bronzer

We Love: Benefit Hoola Zero Tanlines Body Bronzer

This smooth, non-sticky body bronzer glides on HANDS FREE and blends on instantly & seamlessly for a thoroughly believable bronze. Beachin’ bonus…the 12-hour Hoola Zero Tanlines formula stays on even when your clothes come off.

THE MEDIUM FIX Quick developing tan
Which Is…

Like the classic fake tan, these need time to develop and won’t wash off. However, things have come a long way since you walked around the house naked for 8 hours scared to touch anything – these options dry fast and develop fast.

Good For?

Parties, balls, short breaks – any occasion where you want a proper tan but don’t want to invest much time.

Pros

  • Easy to apply, quick drying.
  • Some brands such as St Tropez are coloured so you can see where you’re applying the product.
  • Won’t wash off even with soap so great for any situation.

Cons

  • Take time to develop
  • Requires care when applying (you need mitts or gloves and must protect eyebrows/hairline) to avoid orange hands!
  • A little preparation is needed, especially exfoliation and moisturiser around dry areas.

How To Apply:

Definitely use a mitt and/or gloves! Apply in long, sweeping movements for best results. Some products can be showered off so check the product details.

St. Tropez Express Bronzing Mousse

We Love: St Tropez Express Bronzing Mousse 200ml

This easy to use, quick drying and lightweight mousse is specially formulated to absorb quickly into the skin, allowing you to select your shade of tan by choosing when to wash off the tinted guide colour.

The classic full tan
Which Is…

The classic fake tan needs time to develop and won’t wash off. May take several hours to develop, and will need proper preparation for great results.

Good for?

They’re top of the list if you’re going on holiday or need a serious, all-over tan that lasts a solid week before reapplication.

Pros

  • Usually coloured so you can see where you’re applying product
  • Won’t wash off even with soap
  • Can usually be topped up with further applications a week or so later to keep the tan going.

Cons

  • Take time to develop
  • Requires proper care when applying (mitts or gloves and you must protect eyebrows/hairline).
  • In some cases you can’t get dressed for a short while after application.
  • Preparation is needed for best results – exfoliate and moisturise, preferably the day before.

How To Apply

Application in the usual way with a tanning mitt or gloves.

Xen-Tan Fresh Tanning Mousse

We Love: Xen-Tan Fresh Tanning Mousse

With its lightweight and smooth texture, Xen-Tan’s Fresh Tanning Mousse provides even and easy application for colour in just 3-4 hours. Packed with natural ingredients including peptides, green tea, ginkgo biloba, aloe vera and vitamins D & E, it provides thorough nourishment and hydration to help keep skin smooth and healthy in addition to wonderfully tanned.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Aside from fake tan products, there are a host of complementary items to help you get the look. For even application a tanning mitt is a must. Body exfoliation will create the perfect base, but try a specialist one such as St Tropez Body Polish. Proper exfoliation after you apply your fake tan will help it to fade more evenly. It also creates a base for re-application if you want to keep your fake tan going all summer. Fake tan products are unisex but men may like Clinique Face Tinted Lotion.

Which fake tan brand is your favourite? Is this summer your first wearing fake tan? Let us know!
